twice destroyed by fire, before being rebuilt the third time in
1896. It reminds us of the Historic Murphy’s Hotel - an old
western style place with the bathrooms and showers down
the hall. Room 11 does have a private bathroom though, and
it was available for our stay. The room is right above the bar,
so if you’re an early-to-bed, light sleeper, we would suggest
one of the rooms in back, especially if it’s a weekend night.
The rooms are cozy and were recently remodeled in 2016.
We rolled into town just in time for dinner and had some

The next morning, after a tasty breakfast at the Corner

However rain turned to sun by 12:30pm inviting more

Rick’s retirement. Rick has been running the bar for 22
years and before that he was in the NFL playing defense
for the Miami Dolphins. He sold the bar to experienced
bar owners, Joanne and Uncle Ray who own the
awesome “Funky Monkey” in Hayward on Main St.
The buffet feast included homemade fried chicken
and tri-tip, pasta and potato salads and a corn
casserole that Dan raved about, and the vegetables
were excellent and by 3pm the bar was full of drinking,
dancing and eating. The cakes were amazing for
the sweet tooth. Not one unhappy biker. It was an
awesome party, all the clubs were there even Pirate

And that is where the struggle begins. I’ve experienced

I have not learned forgiveness though. My heart is

MY TWO CENTS: When getting lost is just
WORK WORK WORK! what you need...
It seems like that’s all I do is work! I busted my ass through 18 Oceanfront Rooms
the holidays - working six long days a week, and that’s been Jacuzzi Suites
going on for months! I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m very In-room Fireplaces
grateful for all the bikes in the shop that need frame repair, Sauna Rooms Available
and I am extremely thankful to have customers around the world High Speed WiFi
buying our equipment. And I can honestly say I’m blessed to
have a good wife and good health, because without that, the
rest of it ain’t shit.
I gotta tell ya, I love what I do and it’s a great feeling knowing
I’m one of a few people in the world to do what I do! Because
I own a motorcycle collision shop, I hear all the horror stories
from people dropping off their bikes. Some of the stories are
horrific nail biters that make you grab your stomach in pain,
while others are pretty colorful and funny, and you can’t make
up some of the stories I hear! Meaning they’re funny as hell and
nobody got hurt, beside the minor ass whooping a car driver got
by a biker. All in all my favorite stories are the ones where the
bikers don’t get hurt and it’s nothing a new door or mirror won’t
fix and maybe a little paint.
Hearing the stories and talking about it is one thing, but
experiencing it and having a ride turn into an adventure is
another thing. It seems like I haven’t been on a nice ride or two
wheel adventure for way, way too long. I hate to say this but
I haven’t ridden my bike in almost two months. Do you know
how embarrassing it is for me to even mention this? I feel like
saying “Don’t tell anybody, just keep this between us.” I’ve been
so caught up with work I haven’t even ridden my bike home from
work.
Then to make matters worse, there was a break between
rains and I decided to go for a couple hundred mile ride just for
some wind in my face and a little throttle therapy. As I walked up
to my bike, I thought “What the hell is that?!” There was a puddle
under my bike and I had a flat front tire! It turns out my left rear
shock leaked out all its oil and after inspecting my bike I came
up with the conclusion I desperately needed two new tires. If
that don’t make you feel like someone shit on your pancakes,
nothing will. There’s very few things worse than getting the rug
pulled out from under you when you’re about to go for a ride.
It’s time to put new tires and shocks on this beast and do a
little maintenance to make the Road Glide road worthy again. It
would be best for everyone around me if I had a good running
motorcycle again. It’s one thing to not have the time to go for a
ride, it’s an entirely different thing knowing your bike is down and
can’t be ridden! The part that pisses me off the most is I have no
one to blame but myself! I gotta go work on my bike. That’s my
two cents. Now go ride like hell, ya lucky bastards!

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 28
Early on, Colt had a dream and a vision of how he wanted
this motorcycle to look. He also had the patience to
take the time to get it right - even if it took one piece at a
time. I think that is the hardest thing to do when you get a bike
is controlling the knee-jerk desire to tear it down immediately
to rebuild it to be just the way you want it. Meanwhile, all
your friends are out riding and you are left behind dreaming
of the day when it is finally ready to roll your dream out into
the light of day and introduce your hard work to the world. In
Colt’s case, this would take over a year to accomplish along
with work demands, resourcing just the right parts and of
course just like most of the rest of us, saving money to be
able to cover the costs as we go. Colt is a auto mechanic by
trade, but you will also see him regularly over at Miller Built
Performance Cycles (www.millerbuiltcycles.com) where he
helps out by getting motors running at peak efficiency. And
like the Johnny Cash song goes…Colt ‘ is riding in style,
driving everybody wild, because it’s the only one around’.
Speaking of Miller Built Performance Cycles, Mike and his
crew have recently moved across town into a larger building
with easier access to and from Highway 50. It would be worth
swinging on by and checking out the new digs at 3293 Saratoga
Lane in Cameron Park to see what Miller Built Performance
Cycles can do for you and your ride.

15th Annual Dave Mann Chopperfest
December 8 (Ventura): The 15th Annual in San Diego. McCann’s sculptures are so fantastic and

One of my main reasons for attending this year
was to hook up with Charlie Brechtel of BIC (Bikers
Inner Circle) radio and his buddy Big G. They
were there to promote Charlie’s new movie “Rebel
on the Highway” about voodoo and motorcycling.
Charlie had told me to meet him at the Denver’s
Choppers booth where copies of the movie would
be sold. Denver’s Choppers is the name of Mondo
Porras’s chopper shop in Reno, Nevada. Mondo,
who I consider the Godfather of Chopper building,
has been building choppers since 1967 when he
began with Denver Mullins who has since died. After
introducing myself to Mondo, he was very cordial
and invited me to take a seat at his booth. Soon, I
realized he was not only a judge at the event , but
one of the driving forces behind Chopperfest as he
was very busy making certain everyone was getting
everything they needed for the event. While there,
I met Jennifer Santolucito who was the emcee and
hostess of Chopperfest 2018. Jennifer has helped
put on Chopperfest for many years. Today, she also
sang with SoCal Metal Co. and with “GoodTime”
Charlie. Brechtel. The Bob Carrillo Awesome Blues Band
started the music off with Charlie Brechtel sitting in on guitar
and vocals.
I left the Denver’s Choppers booth and walked down vendor
row to the art exhibit hall. Entering there, I immediately saw a
70’s Chevy van that was a total David Mann style work of art.
Then, I saw metal sculptures of antique motorcycles created by
sculptor Bill McCann whose shop, McCann Designs, is located

Returning back to vendor row, I saw Larry Missman riding
a 750 Harley Davidson on a dyno next to the Ventura Harley-
Davidson’s booth. Larry is the owner of “Learn to Ride VC”
a Ventura County motorcycle rider training school. He has
been running this school for seven years and trains about
fourteen hundred students a year. What was unique was his
setup of the Harley on the dyno. It was secured to the dyno
so you could ride safely in place. He had a sign that said
“Ride a Harley Free”. What a great way to introduce people
to motorcycle riding!
