NORCRAIDLE DESTTINOATYION:RUNS

This month we thought we would give everyone a
snapshot of the tremendous efforts that the Biker
community puts in every year to give disadvantaged
kids in Northern California just a little better Christmas. Of
course, there are many, many Toy Runs throughout NorCal,
but we’ll focus on the main events in the Sacramento area.

The first Toy Drive and I believe the longest running was the
Modified Motorcycle Association run on Sunday, November
28th. Specialty Motorsports provided the logistics for this
fine event. I remember back in the day when the MMA run
was really the only thing going. Thousands of bikes would
line up at the Tower Bridge and down Riverfront St. waiting
for the signal to go. If you were near the back, when you
heard the front fire up, you knew you weren’t in any hurry to
do the same, it would be a half-an-hour before you needed
to saddle up. The gifts would be delivered to the Capital
steps for the ‘Toys for Tots’ program. The organization would
always be assisted by Marine Corp volunteers.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 8

Next up was the Gold Country Food and Toy Run, Saturday,
December 4th. It was hosted by C&E Auburn Indian and
V-Twin, Lone Wolf Cycle, Gold Country Harley Riders and
Gold Country IMRG. Also, kudos go out to the Auburn
Recreation District for their co-sponsorship. The run began
at the Auburn Recreational Park (played many a baseball
game there) and ended at the Auburn Regional Park. The
Regional Park was a great place to gather. Bikes poured in
by the hundreds and the kids really enjoyed going through
the toy line and picking out their goodies.

Last, but not least, the Nevada County Toy Run was held a meet up, the huge convoy of bikes rolled through downtown

week later on December 11th. The day was sunny and bright Nevada City and then on to the Nevada County Fairgrounds

which led to a massive turnout at The Eric Rood Administrative to deliver their gifts. An estimated 1300+ bikes participated,

Fog Droplets

Shut down due to the pandemic, The Gold Country Toy Toy Run this Way
Run was back on for 2021. Bikers were there to support. Visiting with Friends
It was a cold and foggy early Saturday morning when
we left the house. Visibility was about one mile. The fog was
so thick and heavy that water droplets were falling on us. Not
rain, droplets that form when the air temperature gets cool
enough that the water in the air starts to condense. The heat
of our breath caused our glasses to fog up, and there was
black ice on the road. We did not care. We were on our way to
participate in the Gold Country Toy Run.

We met with members of Sierra Thunder H.O.G. in Rocklin,
where 17 bikes and 24 riders headed out together. We rode
up SR-193, through the Newcastle Tunnel to Indian Hill
Road. The fog began to lift and the sun came out. We turned
onto Auburn Folsom Road and continued riding through
Auburn to reach our destination. The Auburn Recreation
Park is the meeting place, and where the Gold Country Toy
Run begins. There were guides showing us where to park
and line up for the 11am KSU. Toys are stacked on the back
of bikes and many riders are dressed in festive Christmas
outfits, ready for fun.

A local favorite, this is the 27th year this ride and giveaway
event has served the community of Auburn. The event features
a short ride that ends up at the Auburn Recreation Department
Gym. The host sponsors and volunteers spend the evening
before decorating and setting up the gym. When the bikers
arrive, there are already people inside waiting. This year,
Auburn Health & Human Services, referred 70 families with
approximately 300 children. A round of applause and hollers of
joy welcomes the bikers as they enter the gym carrying their
many gifts of toys. The children are very excited, knowing the

are traveling at different speeds. The result
was bikers abruptly hitting their brakes on
the freeway, causing a cluster. Alert riders
swerved to prevent running into bikes near
them, and rode around the cluster.

Thunder Roads® Magazine with Sierra Thunder HOG The ride took us off the freeway at Dry
Creek, meandering alongside beautiful
country property. We came upon something
in the middle of the road. Unable to stop,
we were disappointed to realize it was a
biker’s club vest. Our hope was someone
at the end of the line would stop and pick it
up. Approaching town, the CHP, PCSO and
Auburn PD halted traffic at intersections,
allowing the line of bikes to continue
without stopping. Just like a parade, people
lined the side of the road and waved.
Law enforcement picked up the group at
Richardson Drive and escorted the riders to
the parking lot and the Auburn Recreation
Department Gym.

This year our new UBNC Humboldt Prez Jake Dickson of

the event was a big success. From the Plaza in Arcata to
the Mission in Eureka, the pack rode into town with the

attention to all of the vehicles in front of you and on the side of you.
Some things you can look for when splitting lanes are turn signals, a
driver making several attempts to get into your lane, head turns, and
drivers looking in their side mirrors. These are all things that could
indicate that the driver wants to get over. If you see any of these
signs, please slow down and get the driver’s attention before passing
them or wait until they change lanes.
