This is the time of year when a lot of us get busy with our kids/grandkids with their copious after-school activities. For most, these extracurricular itineraries tend to eat away at our precious riding time. In our case, our kids/ grandkids are out of state and out of the country, so this is not a problem that we have. In fact, we always looked forward to this time of year because there is less traffic on the road and we dig the cooler riding temps. Riding this time of year, is heaven on earth! That being said, if you have a chance to ride up through the Sierra Mountains you will be treated to some amazing fall colors. Of course, it is all about timing your ride. We usually try to ride up the summit during the first 3 weeks of October (or just before the first snowfall) to see the best colors. Do us a huge favor…. share your two-wheeled adventures as YOU capture images of this years fall colors! Simply email your images to [email protected] - we will share your pictures and the location. Then that way, we will all have some great ideas for the next fall season. Don’t forget that this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. TRM NorCal loves those big twins so “get ‘em checked” and support those fundraising events that are organized to help find a cure! Have a fun and safe Halloween and we look forward to seeing you all out on the road. Ride Free Ride Often Stan & Terri Hill Owners/Editors Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 2

RIDE DESTINATION: washington Last month we made a return trip to Washington State with family. Because of a little scheduling conflict, our trip ended up taking the time that we allotted for the TRM ride. Since we were in Washington, we thought we would reprint one of our previous trips up there. A few years ago, we made a trip up to Washington State with some of the family. We all had such a good time, everyone decided that we should return. Along the way, we would do some riding and visiting in Oregon also. In all, we would cover just under 2,500 miles on the trip. So, we packed up the bagger and headed north. After spending a few days in Oregon, we made our way to the Lake Quinault Resort. This fine property is located at the southern end of the Olympic National Park. This rain forest section of the park is just beautiful. The foliage is filled with various flowers, ferns, and other tropical plants. The Lodge itself was originally built in 1926 and has a front row view of the lake. Pretty much everything you need here. Great hiking trails, boat rentals, tours, family lawn games, and a couple of nice restaurants with menus that should appeal to everyone. After spending a day having some fun with the family, we decided to take a day trip and explore some of Olympic National Park. Up early, I fired up the old Iron Horse and headed north on Lake Quinault Lodge Olympic Mountains Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 6

CONTINUED... Highway 101. This fine asphalt runs along near the coast in mostly wooded terrain. About 70 miles out of Quinault you’ll come to the city of Forks. A pleasant little town and since we were getting hungry, we stopped for breakfast. The “In Place” seemed like a good spot. And it was. Hunger abated, gassed up, we hit the road. Up 101 to SR113 and then on to SR112 East. Although it was a really pretty woodsy ride, we were a little disappointed. If you look at a map, it appears 112 runs right along the coast. It does, but except for a few places, the forest blocks out most of the coastline. Before reaching Port Angeles, we ran across the Blackbird Café. It must be the meeting place of the two wheeled folks along this route. Pulling up, there must have been 20 bicycles and 7 or 8 motorcycles gathered there. If we had had more time (and our passports), when reaching Port Angeles, we would have taken the ferry across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It would have been nice to have a relaxing lunch in Victoria. Oh well, maybe next time. So, instead of Victoria, we made our way to Hurricane Ridge Road. Wow! Now this was some kind of ride. This route through the Olympic Mountain Range is spectacular. It was a real treat getting to the visitor center at the top and hanging out on the patio. We soaked in a horizon of mountain peaks that melted down into deep forested valleys. It was very hard to leave. But the show must go on. Going down the mountain was just as nice as going up. This time we decided to take 101 all the way back, skipping SR112. A good choice. Especially the long section along Lake Crescent. Really pretty. We went on back through Forks, this time making a quick stop at the Forks Timber Museum. Lots of old logging artifacts such as hand saws, chain saws, axes and other wood cutting equipment. There are also replicas of a cookhouse, a bunkhouse, a tavern, and even an old outhouse! Certainly, worth a look. There was one more stop in order before we made our Mt Ranier From The Ridge Rd Inside Lodge Sunset Lake Quinault Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 7

Us At Viewpoint Off 504 way back to the family. That was Ruby Beach. Of the several beaches along this stretch, this is probably the nicest. A rocky, wooded coastline with several sea stacks jutting out from the beach. Very picturesque and only a short walk from the parking lot. Back at the Lodge again, we spent a couple more days having some family fun. As usual, time seemed to fly, and before we knew it, we were packing it all up. Since Cindy’s father was having a medical procedure done the next day, we would be heading back to Oregon. But along the way we would have one more adventure. That would be going to Mount St. Helens. And a fine adventure it was! We took the back roads to Montesano, caught SR12 and made our way to I5. Highway 504 (Spirit Lake Highway) at Castle Rock will take you all the way to the Johnson Ridge Observatory. Two fabulous mountain treks in one trip are hard to beat! Wonderful scenery, plenty of pull-outs, and a fine road make for a sweet ride. If you recall, Mount St. Helens erupted in May of 1980. It was the most disastrous volcanic eruption in U.S. history. The column shot 80,000 feet in the air and spread ash over 11 states and bordering Canada. The volcanic mudslides reached the Columbia River, 50 miles to the southwest. Fiftyseven people were killed, and hundreds of square miles were utterly devasted. At a couple of viewpoints, you can look down into the valley and see the route that the slide took. Over the Mt. St. Helens The Eruption Mt. St. Helens last, almost forty years, it has grown in little bit, but it is still mostly barren terrain. Even some of the nearby lakes are still partly covered with felled trees. Also, The Johnston Ridge Observatory is named after David Johnston, a Volcanologist (studies volcanoes) who perished in the eruption. After passing it by many times, we were glad we finally took the time to check it out. Everything went well with Cindy’s dad, which we were grateful for. So, vacation over, it was time to make our way back to California. Funny how it is you never feel like leaving some place that you travel to, but it always feels so good to get home! Have you ever felt alone? I mean utterly alone. When you turn and look for someone to be there and there is no one. When you look at the phone and there is no number to call. At least no one on the other end that you felt would give you the help needed at that specific moment. For some, you stand on the precipice and feel like you are looking out into an abyss. A vast area of nothingness. You may be scared, lonely and feel like the world is collapsing around you and are longing for companionship. You are longing for someone to just “be there”. You can feel the cliff you are standing on is giving way to the weight you are carrying. You try to get your feet stable, but you can feel the pebbles releasing under your boots as you stand petrified by uncertainty. There is no feeling like this and for many the pebbles finally give way and they fall into a deep state of depression or worse they seem the only solution is to end the pain and vanish from this world. Abandonment is a heavy burden to carry and when you need someone the most and they cannot be found, for some it is too much of a burden to carry. But I am here to tell you, there is hope, there is friendship and there is one who will never abandon you, hurt you, and will be closer than a brother or sister. I have recently had to rely on the fact that beyond everyone I thought I could bring my troubles to, there was only one that had the security rope around my waist in my gravest time of need. I stood at the precipice, feeling the pebbles slipping below my feet. I could feel each one as it slipped away, falling, and echoing for miles into nothingness. I looked below and I could see nothing besides darkness and knew I didn’t want to fall, but as I reached, I found no mortal hand to grab on too. I knew I had to do something, so I went for a ride. I knew getting on the bike for a few hours would cleanse my soul, get my heart right, and maybe get me some perspective and direction. As I cruised up Auburn-Folsom Road towards Auburn, I felt my spirit regain composure as I contemplated the years of service I have given and to thousands of people. Launching ministries, launching churches, funerals, weddings, counseling, hospital visitation, free construction projects and driving hundreds of miles to pray with folks. Every moment for over 20+ years was about serving others. The years I took away from my family for others and now feeling like I had been kicked, abandoned and at another crossroads in my life. I’m telling you; I’ve been through some crap in my life and definitely have stood at the gates of Hell, but I had never found myself at a place like I was that day. And if this is you, keep reading. It was a perfect Sunday morning for riding. It was 70 degrees at 7:30am with a slight breeze coming in from the south. The road was empty, and I didn’t have to worry about someone going too slow or riding up my rear end. I started praying for clarity and a direction to turn. I asked the same question many ask when they are in this state of mind. I asked, “Where did you go God? Why have you abandoned me in my gravest hour of need? I have served you well and yet I cannot see you or feel you. Help me to see you and feel you.” Now I am not a very good listener, and I am definitely not the most patient person on the planet, but for some reason on that day, I let God take the handlebars. I kept thinking about the people in my life and the people I have served and helped. I began to feel like I could ride forever seeing glimpses of their tears and smiles in my thoughts, but there was still a heavy weight on my soul, so I kept riding. After an hour of riding, I felt a nudge to turn on Indian Hills Road and head down to Newcastle. Little did I know, I was not being led to the deli for a sandwich, but to Calvary Chapel. I’m usually pastoring church or speaking at church, but that particular Sunday, I found myself sitting in the back corner like a stranger. I’ve never attended that church, so I sat in silence while worship started. And then suddenly, the most amazing thing happened, God came and sat right beside me. I felt the loving arms of Jesus wrap around me as I broke down in tears and feeling a warmth I haven’t felt in a very long time. I heard him say “I have missed you and have been waiting for you”. When I heard his voice, that very moment the flood gates opened, and I started shedding the tears of loneliness, betrayal, contempt and forthwith evil upon my life. I have been carrying these for quite some time and like many thought I could control it get over it. I was wrong. By the end of the service I was cleansed, healed, and knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, that He would never leave me, and he was always there waiting for me to humble myself and come back authentically. Holy Guacamole! I walked away with a new perspective, a new trust, and the loyalty of a trusted friend. Jesus says to cast all your cares upon him and he will sustain you and never leave you. Listen my friends, it aint a complicated thing besides the complications we make it out to be. You can give your life to other people and continue chasing the things you think are going to make you happy. But at the end of the day, when all Hell breaks loose and you find yourself at the precipice with the pebbles slipping away from the bottom of your boots, remember, He is There! He is always there. May You Find Him Now. Psalms 55:22 Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken. EVENT Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 11

If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley Coming Home Full Circle A great honor was bestowed upon the members of Sierra Thunder Harley Owners Group. The City of Roseville hosted a Dedication and Grand Opening Ceremony of their newly named street, Nicole Gee Road, on August 28, 2023. The dedication was in honor of service and recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by Sgt. Nicole Leeann Gee, USMC. Nicole grew up in Roseville, attended local schools and was an Oakmont High School graduate in 2016. Helping thousands of refugees evacuate to safety, Nicole was one of thirteen American military service members killed on August 26, 2021, in a terrorist attack by a suicide bombing at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. Nicole returned home with military honors, on Sept 16, 2021. Her family, friends and the community needed to say thank you and goodbye. Nicole’s family asked the Patriot Guard Riders to escort Nicole and her family from the Sacramento Airport, and present a flag line at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks. Nearly 400 motorcycles presented an impressive 2 ½ mile long double row of bikes, participating in the escort that brought her home. Semitrucks blocked lanes. People stood on the sides and in the middle of the road. Firetrucks were at every overpass. Some with their ladders at an angle in the air, representing a salute to our fallen hero. Sierra Thunder H.O.G. members proudly rode in the escort procession, many with American flags flying on their bikes. We solemnly stood in the flag line at Mt. Vernon as the pallbearers carried her past us, into the chapel. Nicole’s family did not forget our participation. Recognizing we are local neighbors living in and nearby Roseville, they asked Sierra Thunder H.O.G. to escort the family to the Nicole Gee Road Grand Opening Event. They also invited us to participate in the ceremonial first drive down the newly opened road. A few days before the dedication ceremony, Curt and I took a pre-ride. He needed to be sure he knew the condition of the roads, estimated traffic, and the correct route to Nicole Gee Road. It was a good thing we did the pre-ride. Nicole Gee Road is a brand new paved road, located in the middle of an area still waiting to be developed. Most of the roads in the area do not connect yet. There are barriers blocking through traffic. Without taking the pre-ride, we might have been riding in circles trying to find Nicole Gee Road. Understanding the honor and privilege presented to us, twenty-five (25) bikes gathered early on the morning of the event. We wanted to be ready and on time for the ceremony and procession. We rode to the parking lot of a local shopping center for the scheduled meet up with her family. Nicole’s uncle arrived on his motorcycle and asked to ride with us. He walked up and down the line of bikes and thanked everyone for being there. When ready to proceed to the ceremony site, her family followed, driving their cars behind the bikes on Baseline Road to Westbrook Drive. We rode directly to the staging area. We parked behind the City of Roseville Police, and the Fire Truck that would carry Nicole’s family down the street for the ceremonial opening ride. This was a public event. Everyone was welcome to attend. The dedication ceremony began with the Vice Mayor welcoming the invited guests and community members. Four members from Combat Logistics Battalion 24, United States Marine Corps Color Guard presented colors. This formality is a traditional military ceremony that marks a significant event in the history of a military unit or service branch. A student from Roseville’s West Park High School sang the National Anthem while the crowd appreciated the Placer County Sheriff’s Office helicopter flyover. Placer County Law Enforcement Chaplaincy shared a prayer. The Vice Mayor spoke again, telling the history of Nicole’s life. She was quite Ceremonial Ride on Nicole Gee Drive City of Roseville gifts ceremonial street sign to family Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12

Sierra Thunder ready for ride an impressive young woman. An overachiever, her list of accomplishments is amazing, especially for a woman who was only 23 years old at the time of her death. The Vice Mayor invited Misty Fuoco to the stage. She is Nicole’s sister. The crowd laughed when Misty discovered her two small children had unexpectedly followed her. They climbed on stage and stood with their mother while she talked about missing her sister and best friend. The Vice Mayor presented Misty with a ceremonial street sign framed for display. Next, the family gathered behind the stage, standing around the pole on the corner of the street. They smiled and clapped together during the unveiling of the sign bearing the name of the street. Nicole Gee Road. Just after the street dedication and presentation, guests lined both sides of the street. The Roseville Police motorcycle officers started their bikes, lights flashing and sirens blaring. The family climbed to the top of the Fire Truck. Excitement in the air, Nicole’s family was waving. We started our motorcycles and followed the procession on Nicole Gee Road. A Coast Guard aircraft was performing a flyover. The aircraft was circling and dipping in salute, showing respect to Nicole and acknowledgement of the loss her family carries in their heart. The Fire Truck turned around and went back down the road to where the procession started. We rode out, heading back home. There is a quote about dying and death. It goes something like this: They say you die twice. Once when your heart stops beating. The second time is when your name is said for the last time. With a street named after her, it will be a long time before someone stops saying Nicole’s name. Her legacy will be remembered forever in her hometown of Roseville, California. Take a drive on Nicole Gee Road. Say her name, remember her sacrifice and thank her. Coming home full circle, maybe Nicole’s family finally has some closure. Respect given, respect returned. September 8-10 (Redway) Not so this weekend in Humboldt County in the heart of Redway. The Fryed Brothers 43rd Bash In The Redwoods bought hundreds of bikers from everywhere to enjoy a weekend of good ol’ biker fun. The music line-up was amazing! Solo artist Turtle opened. Following was The Fryed Brothers Band, Rogue, Barn Fire, Damn Liars and Beatnik. During the high heat of the day, bikers enjoyed traditional biker games, swimming, riding the hills, along with lots of hanging out with the massive amount of bikers that attended. Food, vendors and beer on tap (provided by Piercy Volunteer Fire Department) along with a raffle tent was available. I saw Brian Smith of the Two Much Fun Club walking around with his raffle prize, a set of Harley Davidson truck floor mats…not to shabby Brian! A special thanks to Barbara and John Fryed, Harry Fryed and the entire gang that made it happen! See ya next year! The title track of Red’s Blues’ third album could be a metaphor for America right now, and most likely that is how Beth Reid-Grigsby (aka Red) and Richard “RW” Grigsby, the talented married production team who lead this Sacramento based band, perceived it. They wrote or co-wrote eight of the eleven songs, and they have that long-running knack of making personal histories both poetic and cosmic. Red’s Blues has always had a finger-poppin’ attitude—straight outta the golden years when blues, R&B and swing all meshed together and dance floors every night were filled with snake hips and slow drags. Beth, with her sensual, southern voice and classy behind-the-beat phrasing is more a Peggy Lee or Bobbie Gentrystyled singer: smoky with languid, sexy sophistication. Her “Hands Off,” accompanied by elegant swingman John Cocuzzi on piano, is pure, late nightclub vibe. Beth says “A fun tribute for folks who are married to or involved with musicians. Inspired by a lot of women over the many years, and it is in jest...sort of.” Red’s Blues draw their audiences into a grown-up music world—southern music with down home simmer, dance floor fun. Red’s Blues Band will be appearing this month at the charity event “Raise The Roof” An event to raise funds to rebuild the roof of a recovery institution, who lost their building due to an arson fire (For more information see our Events Calendar at the back of TRM NorCal). By LuLu Lots of my friends make the trip to Milwaukee over and over for the summer anniversary event of HarleyDavidson, but it is a long trip, and we haven’t had it on our bucket list. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by the event, the town, the museum, the factory, and the food in this city. We made plans to go last minute, so even though we were able to secure media credentials giving us access to the museum and factory, our passes weren’t all access, so we couldn’t fight the HUGE crowds trying to get near the secluded lakefront concert venue at Veteran’s Park to see headliners Green Day and Foo Fighters. We were, however, able to get up close and personal to one of our favorites, Hairball, at the H-D Museum stage, as well as several other bands scattered throughout the cities’ rally locations during our 3-day visit. The greater Milwaukee area is home to seven dealerships that were all hosting their own anniversary bashes. Bike Nights, Reason to Ride Auction benefiting Muscular Dystrophy and ALS, Mama Tried & Friends Motorcycle Show, AMCA Field games, all kept the throngs of revelers entertained. But seeing the museum and the factory is what made the trip worthwhile. I found the museum to be interesting and very artfully done. I was pleased to see so many young faces staring at the history there. In the lobby is where they unveiled the latest CVO Road Glide and Street Glide models with the new 121” motor and boy they are beautiful. The H-D Powertrain Operations factory tour was interesting too, but TJ was disappointed as he thought it would also be where they assembled the bikes, and he could ride one right off the line! Now we will have to make a visit to York, PA to see the assembly plant! I wish I had attended these events in the past as Harley-Davidson went above and beyond to have something for everyone, and if they could do something about parking and access to Veteran’s Park THAT would be a bonus!

Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: First of all, are you a big Simpsons fan and did you used to drive a bus? How did you get the name Otto? Also, your last name, Deutsch — It means German. Talk to me about your name. Otto Deutsch: Well, first off, good job referencing The Simpsons. Arguably the best show ever, I am a Simpsons fan. I will never be as cool as Otto, who drives the bus. He sets the bar very, very high. I got the nickname Otto because I used to have a blog called Blotto Parts and my God-given name — my slave name is Michael. Michael Deutsch. I know so many Mikes that are just liars and sluts and I started being called Blotto. I then kind of started to go by the pen name, Otto Bob Blato. I would write some articles for magazines and stuff. Again, there are a lot of Mikes. Maybe not all of ’em are liars and sluts, but a lot of ’em are — and I just started to go by Otto. So, Otto’s kind of the name that has stuck with me. Deutsch is German for German. And on my dad’s side, they’re all dairy farmers from Minnesota that immigrated here, from Germany, which I guess was a thing. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: You’ve worked 15 years in the motorcycle industry. What’s the story of how you got involved with Biltwell? Otto Deutsch: Well, Biltwell is founded in Temecula, California. That’s where we are today. Temecula, California. We’re still headquartered here. We distribute out of this warehouse — our 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Temecula. As I got more and more into motorcycles, I started to see this company called Biltwell. I saw that they’re in my local town. This is a small town now. It used to be even smaller. So I said, I’m gonna meet these guys from Biltwell. Well, they look like they party a lot. I’m looking at their ads, you know, and that they do fun things. And so I started hanging out with Bill and McGoo and I realized quickly that they party a little bit, but mostly they work really hard and they have a well-defined goal. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: You started with Biltwell 12 years ago. Where did you start in the company? Where are you now? What is your job position? Otto Deutsch: I’m a licensed general contractor. My first job for Bill [owner of the Biltwell], well, actually it wasn’t going to the swap meet. I lied. They bought a building down the street, and I built all their offices. And I put in the offices and the bathrooms. So that was my first job, really. And then I started doing events for them. Going on rides, going on cross-country trips and representing Biltwell. They just got me to do more and more of that. My card says, “Good Times Coordinator”. With my boss Bill, we produce four or five events every year to promote our company. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Do you have any involvement in creating any of the moto accessories or parts for Biltwell? Otto Deutsch: Absolutely. There are a few of us, the core guys that absolutely love motorcycles. We definitely steer the design team and help — “Hey, this is what we would like to make.” So we come to those guys, McGoo and Westy are their names and come to them with an idea. And they say, “Okay, let’s reverse engineer and figure out how we can get there”, you know? So I think it’s important for any company — if your job is to make lawnmowers, you better have mowed a couple of lawns. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What is a trait about this company that makes it unique? Otto Deutsch: Hard work. You know, a couple of people that are passionate about the subject and people that are in the right time of their life where they know what their options are as far as work and careers. A lot of us are here because we like coming to work, you know? None of us are watching the clock every day. We’re proud of our accomplishments. We’re proud of the events we’ve put on and the products we’ve turned out, and all of the friends that we’ve made all over the world because of those things.
