Washington

Last month we had an opportunity to head North to pay Latus Motors HD
a visit to Cindy’s father in Oregon. He is in assisted Eagle Rider
living and we hadn’t seen him since last October. So,
off we went. Cindy’s neck was acting up pretty bad, so she
wasn’t up to riding. Also, there was only one day that we
could make arrangements for a visit, and that would be a
riding day. Hopefully, we will be able to get her neck taken
care of soon. Even in a car, we never tire of that drive from
Redding to Eugene, and then the backroads to her father’s
place. While she was visiting with her family, I hooked up
with my brother and we hit the road for a couple of days.

First though, I wasn’t going to drive while my brother rode,
so I met Dave at Latus Motors H-D in Gladstone, Oregon.
There Eagle Rider set me up with a 2020 Street Glide. So
now, with two wheels under me, we made our way up to
Elmer’s for breakfast and then on to I84, which runs right
along the Columbia River. The views of the river and the
surrounding cliffs are amazing. Also, there is a series of
waterfalls along the way, with Multnomah Falls being the
highlight. The Historic Columbia River Hwy will take you
up the see the incredible views from the cliffs overlooking
the River. We eventually crossed the river at SR97 and set
course to Yakima, Washington. We would meet an old friend
of mine there for lunch and a little ride. After a beautiful ride
up 97, we met up with Bob and after some burgers, it was on
to SR12. Bob rode his recently acquired Harley and we had
a nice putt over to Naches. There we parted ways and Dave
and I continued up 12.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 6

Multnomah Falls Washington isn’t called the
and Bridge ‘Evergreen State’ for nothing.
Green, green, green and more
green. A beautiful state. On our
way to Packwood, we kicked it a
bit at Rimrock Lake. Formed by
the Tieton Dam, and set below
huge cliffs, it’s a real pretty
place. Originally, I wanted to
turn North on 410 and come
into Mt. Rainier National Park
from the East, but the road to
the park was blocked. It was
under repair from winter storm
damage.

Our destination for the night
was Ashford and Bob had
mentioned that there was a
great woodsy road right out of
Packwood that takes you right
there. So, since we couldn’t go
the other way, we took Skate
Creek Road to Ashford. Awfully
glad we did. It was a very cozy
ride through a canopied forest
that also follows a large creek
for most of the way. No normal
creek either. Fast flowing,
wide, full of rocks, fallen logs
and other forest debris. Real
nice!

Reaching Ashford, we
checked in to our cabin at
the Lodge Near Mt. Rainer.
We had this large family size
unit to ourselves. There are
several different cabins on the
property with plenty of space
for tent camping also. The few
restaurants in town had some

decent wait times, so we headed over to the General Store Pooh At Paradise
and stocked up on drinks and munchies for the night. We
enjoyed our stay at the lodge, and when morning arrived,
we were back on the road heading East up into the park.

What an absolutely impressive climb it was. Majestic
mountains and jagged snow-capped out croppings. If
you’re in the area, Mt. Rainer is a must! The entire ride up
to Paradise (it deserves its name) is filled with incredible
scenery. The view from the Nisqually Bridge is especially
nice. The only bummer was that, because of the low
hanging clouds that day, clear views of the summit were
fleeting. The trip down was equally as impressive and soon
we were back in Ashford. Time was getting short since I
had to get the bike back to the dealership or get charged
for another day. I wanted to ride down the back side of Mt
St. Helens, but had to put that off till next time.

We rode out to SR 7 and turned South. This scenic route
takes you into the little town of Morton. We were both getting
hungry, so we pulled into a small establishment called
Spiffy’s and had lunch. Good fish and chips. Mmmmm. In
Morton, we picked up SR12 again and really enjoyed the
ride West out to I5. Once we got back in Oregon, Dave
headed home, and I returned the bike to Latus Motors
Harley-Davidson. BTW-Cindy was incredibly happy to see
her family and be able to spend time with them. It was a
great trip for both of us. Later!

A Day in the Life of “Mad Max” Lambky Story by: Roxanne

+ Wild Bill Hill

“Mad Max” Lambky from Wichita, Kansas and his ‘Vincent Streamliner’, “Black Lightning” doing
275 mph. This machine is powered by two 1949 supercharged pushrod V-twin Vincent engines.
The total displacement is 2,000 cc. producing over 400 horsepower, total weight with rider and
fuel is 1,600 pounds.

It was a real privilege to be able to spend the day during Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats getting to know Mad Max
last year, the man who has so much passion for speed! Keep in mind the engines that power this machine are over 70 years
old and he’s pumping all the horsepower he can out of them. In 1949, the stock Vincent is best described as a high-speed
touring bike, and the powerful engine usually appealed to those who like speed. It had a reputation for being the world’s
fastest standard motorcycle. Built from 1924 to 1955, the Vincent HRD was the world’s most exclusive and technologically
advanced motorcycle of its day. Today it is regarded as one of the most desirable collectible classics.

Mad Max has been riding a Vincent since he was 23 years old. He said that over 30 years ago he started thinking about,
“trying to break the world speed record for motorcycles.” Before he commenced to designing and building his first model in
1989, Mad Max had never built a streamliner. “It has been a trial-and-error process,” he admitted. “The first two were never
run, they just weren’t any good” he said. The third prototype, driven by the late Don Vesco, had clutch problems, so it was back
to the shop where he redesigned the streamliner for a fourth time. Stu Rogers from England rode that model at Bonneville, but
it crashed on the first run. Don Angel was riding the fifth Streamliner in 1998 when one the parachutes prematurely deployed
during the fourth run. “Even pulling a full parachute it was traveling 150 miles per hour… but the parachute got to dancing and
dragged the Streamliner onto its side” said Mad Max.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 10

He took the Streamliner to California and rebuilt it and in 2002, Dave Campos was going 183 mph when the crankshaft broke.
In 2005, the streamliner won an award in the antique division at the ‘2005 Speed Trials’ by BUB at Bonneville Speedway by
traveling at 212.86 miles per hour. Don Angel, was recorded going 150 mph through the timing lights in 2006. The land-speed
record streamliner reached a top record speed of 250 mph at the ‘2007 International Motorcycle Speed Trials’ and an estimated
275 mph in second gear before a supercharger spindle broke and spoiled the run. In September 2010, the streamliner set
a new Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) record of 191.303 miles per hour on the salt in the SCS-PBF class.
Nine iterations of the streamliner had been built by Lambky. Development costs were reported as $100,000 in 1997 and over
$150,000 by 2008. It’s been run at least 12 times at Bonneville. Seeing his dedicated crew work like a well-oiled machine was
fascinating. His love and his life is building and rebuilding it stronger until its perfect, is Mad Max’s passion.

The rider of this 1930 Brough 1,000cc‎ air cooled OHV
Superior is a 68-year-old Londoner named Eric Patterson. A
retired painter and decorator on his newly rebuild Superior
averaged 124.98 mph in the VGA Vintage Class at Bonneville.
The record is made even sweeter by the fact that it was the
first time a Brough had been back on the salt for 62 years.

These motorcycles are the most sought after two-wheeled
transports in the world. Just 380 of the motorcycles were built
from 1924 until 1940, around a third of that production still exists.
Superior motorcycles were made by George Brough at Brough
Superior works on Haydn Road in Nottingham, England. The
motorcycles were dubbed the “Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles”.

During the 50’s, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Marty Dickerson was best known for setting speed records on his Vincent HRD Rapide. Dickerson

set a Class C record of 129 mph on the Utah Bonneville Salt Flats in 1951. When the record was broken a year later, Dickerson came back with an

improved version of his Vincent in 1953 and turned in a run of 147 mph. That record held for a remarkable 20 years! During that run, he cracked the

elusive 150 mph barrier in one direction. Dickerson was also a top-notch West Coast road racer. He won the 250cc division in the famous Catalina

Grand Prix in 1953. Dickerson opened his own Vincent motorcycle shop in 1951. A year earlier, he rode to Utah to help the legendary Rollie Free

in his speed runs at Bonneville. While there, he caught the speed trial bug. The ride home from Utah would be the last street miles his beloved

Vincent would see. The bike was completely disassembled and modified for top-speed runs. After he studied the rulebook he found some unique

loopholes that would allow him to do away with the standard seat and replace it with just a small pad low on the rear wheel well. He also turned

his handlebars upside-down to give him a more streamlined riding position. In 1996, Dickerson, who was 70 at the time, brought his trusty old

Max Vincent out of the mothballs and set a vintage speed
Lambky
Marty Dickerson record. Dickerson will always be closely associated
with Vincent motorcycles. Enthusiasts of the famous

British motorcycle continue to seek his knowledge of

1953 Marty Dickerson at 150 mph the brand some fifty years after his record runs. In
2007, Dickerson returned to Bonneville at 80 years of

age, climbed on a 1950 Vincent Rapide and clocked

runs of 151.685 mph and 154.567 scorching yet

another record into the history books. Now in his 80s,

riding continues to be his favorite pastime and he is still

twisting the throttle WFO.

We visited all of the nearby towns and saw the sights. More vendors,
everywhere. People crowded on the balconies of the saloons, two
and three stories high. Easyriders Saloon was popular, but the place
to be was Full Throttle Saloon. It was like Mad Max in Thunderdome,
on steroids. Open ceiling with a tightwire and zipline overhead. A
motorcycle rider was racing back and forth on the tightwire. Riders
speeding in a turning globe. A man wearing a diaper, suspended in
air, held by chains attached to the piercings in his body. Multiple bars.
Freightliner trucks stacked on top of each other, next to the bleachers
where people sit and watch. A few weeks after we were there, Full
Throttle Saloon burned down.

Nine days later we were headed home, but the vacation wasn’t
over. We went to Moab, Utah and toured the Arches National Park.
We stood next to tall mountains with hieroglyphics carved into the
walls and enjoyed the vast skies of Cheyenne, Wyoming. We rode
beside the Rocky Mountain springs of Colorado and watched the
water flow quickly through the mountains. We rode the Hogsback
Highway, where the curvy road drop offs on both sides, at the same
time. Almost home, we spent the last night in Austin, Nevada. We
hung out in a dive bar with a jukebox playing scratched records. The
next morning we crossed into California and came upon Lake Tahoe.
We were reminded there is beauty right here at home.

3,872 miles, 7 states, 14 days, 739,000 people at Sturgis. We
traveled on lonely roads that went on forever. Curt and I entertained
each other telling stories and jokes, singing songs and laughing. Hot,
cold, wind and rain. Bugs in the face. Drama, disappointment and
excitement. So many amazing sights to see. I know all of our friends
will enjoy Sturgis this year as much as we did five years ago. If you
see us on the road, come ride with us.

The Proposal

Ihad a message on my phone from Corey - the service advisor Strapping Jesse on the trike
at San Jose Harley. He said he wanted to run something by me
to see what I think. The call was about a customer ‘s request Loading Jesse, with Tee and
from Fred (who also lives in San Jose) with help to make a kanaka
dream come true for his niece’s boyfriend, Jesse. You see, all Jesse
wanted to do was to rent a Harley and go to Alice’s Restaurant so
that he can propose to Tracey (Fred’s niece). Sounds easy enough,
right? There’s more to it! Jesse is a quadriplegic, now this makes
things a little more interesting! I forgot to mention that we have less
than two weeks to do this.

My first thought and plan of action was to call Tee - the President
of Kanaka Hekili MC. Most of the members are Polynesian – and
the most beautiful and spiritual people in the world and as far as I’m
concerned. And they are the best motorcycle club in the world too. Tee
came in with five of his members and made this happen. We strapped
Jesse’s ass on Nad’s trike and using Velcro and wire ties and carried
a roll of duct tape too. Then we loaded him up at Fred and Lauri’s
house in SJ with the next stop San Jose Harley. San Jose Harley
really impressed me, they didn’t have to do all this.

Ya see, Fred went to San Jose Harley looking for a trike to rent,
but they didn’t have anything so Fred left. (This is how I got involved)
Corey from the shop went beyond the call of duty to help make this
happen. There was nothing for them to gain, they just wanted this guy
from Idaho (Jesse) to fulfill his dream to ride on a Harley to Alice’s
Restaurant and ask his girlfriend to marry him. I bought Nad’s trike at
San Jose and I’m glad I did - the people there are awesome. Fred said
he was going to buy a new Harley there too.

When we left SJ Harley we took Hwy 280 North to 84. Kanaka led
the pack, then Nad with Jesse on the trike followed behind Kanaka.
Jesse was happier than a pig rolling in shit! Tee and the other
Kanakas opened the lane, so Nad and Jesse could lead the pack
down the freeway. Fred and I followed behind to keep an eye on
Jesse, in case the straps came loose. Nadia did a fantastic job
driving the trike with Jesse strapped in. Tracey rode with Uncle
Fred next to me.

When we got to Alice’s, the owner was there and took very good
care of our group. The bacon cheeseburgers all around were
fabulous. Now mind you, this all came together within two weeks,

Jesse did ask Tracey to marry him after we did the

SUMMER ROAD HAZARDS

Heads up Riders! Recently
a couple was riding
through the hills of Santa
Cruz Mountains and was hit by
a falling tree limb!! The limb
dropped right on the front end
of their bagger, crunched the
fender, took out the left running
light and blinker.

Luckily they rode through it
and they managed to stay on
the bike, it was wobbly, but they
kept it upright. The passenger
used her foot in one of the
photos to get a relevant scale
for size of the limb…not your
every day tree branch!

This dry weather is just as
hazardous as riding in inclement
weather! As you know, trees
normally draw water from the
ground through its roots - but
when the earth dries from
extreme heat, a tree will hold onto
its water reserves and becomes
heavier causing the branches
to break. PLEASE SHARE and
always stay alert! .

adventure? Cricket’s owner, Jean, shares some insight into her
training and experiences. Go to www. RussBrown.com

1. As much fun as it sounds, you cannot just strap a dog to
the back and take off! Jean has trained 20 or so dogs to ride on
motorcycles, from Chihuahuas to Labs. She says it is imperative to
take the time necessary to properly and safely get them on a bike.

2. Boston Terriers are very smart and easy to train, a great
fit for the seat of a motorcycle, and resilient for their size. Jean
has successfully trained two Boston Terriers to love motorcycle
riding. But don’t worry, she says any breed of dog with the right
temperament & correct training can learn.

3. Jean starts them out by desensitizing them to the sounds of
the engine and motorcycle pipes. Cricket only has 20% hearing
in one ear–the side with the blue eye–which is pretty common in
these breeds. You may think she’s ignoring you, but she’s just not
listening! Just because Cricket hears a mumbled rumble doesn’t
mean you cannot desensitize your non-hearing-impaired pooch–it
just takes time and patience.
