Little Grass Valley

Our adventure this time begins in the old mining town of Nevada City for a
double overnighter. We rolled out on SR49 and headed toward Grass Valley
where we would pick up Hwy 20 and head west. After a nice cruise on 20,
Marysville Rd would take us up past Collins Lake and to Willow Glen. We continued
north on now Willow Glen Rd and began a gradual twisty climb up into a more forested
terrain.

Enjoying the ride, as we neared Brownsville, we found ourselves now on La Porte Rd
and on our way to Clipper Mills. Once there, we pulled into One Eyed Jack’s for a little
dinner. A real nice place. Everyone is small town friendly and the atmosphere kinda
woodsy. Jim, the piano man was banging out some tunes for everyone’s enjoyment
and as it turns out, Jack and his daughter Sonya are fellow Minnesotans. Go Vikings!

Jim at the Piano So after some good food and conversation, we continued
on up Quincy-La Porte Rd to our diggs for the weekend in
La Porte. This section of the road is kind of unique from your
normal forest route. Just the way the road carves its way
through gives you a different perspective than what you’re
used to. More open, I guess, than a colonnade of pines.
Another old mining town back in the day,

La Porte (71 mi) is a nice quiet place where you can lay
back and relax or take advantage of the outdoor activities
the area offers. Hiking, boating and some of the best
snowmobiling around. We pulled into town and quickly found
our cabin lodging. La Porte Cabins has a half dozen newly
remodeled units with various amenities.

Stacia and Kova were very helpful getting us settled and
gave us a little rundown on the local happenings. Now it was
time kick it for the night. Saturday morning was bright and
sunny and after some coffee at the Rabbit Creek Deli (La
Porte was originally named Rabbit Creek), we pulled onto
the road to Quincy (104 mi). Great ride from here to Quincy.
The road twists and turns as you climb up, up, up and then
it’s back and forth down the other side at about a 6% grade.
Second gear, third at times will save on the brakes. Finally on
the wide valley floor, we made our way into town. Arriving too
early for a stop at my favorite fish-n-chips place, we picked

ROAD TRIPPIN’:

A Ticket To Ride to Born Free 13

On the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)

Every year I look forward to the ride down to Born
Free 13 (BF13) Chopper Show in Silverado Canyon
but this year took on a different approach and a
new route. Typically it was head South pounding
the relentlessly monotonous freeway miles to LA on I-5, but
this trip this was going to be different and be more about the
ride than the event itself and this meant taking the long way
down the Pacific Coast Highway 1 (PCH) down to Malibu and
ultimately ending in Orange County.

This years’ adventure included 4 of my Moonshiners 13
Brothers from Kansas City, Missouri who met up with me in
Ione to continue on down to our final destination at the bike
show. Once we all joined up, we meandered through the gold
foothills on Highway 88 down to I-5 on to Santa Nella via
Highway 33 that then took us over Hwy 152 over to Carmel
Valley, where the ride really took shape featuring the splendor
and glory of what the California Coast has to offer.

After about 3 ½ hours of riding to Carmel Valley, we stumbled
upon a great burger spot- RG Burgers (RG stands for real
good we’re told) in Carmel Valley at the corner of Hwy 1 and
Rio Road. The menu featured so many versions of burgers
but I settled on the Mushroom –Cheddar Burger with a side
of chili. The burger was cooked to perfection and the chili was
on point and not too spicy! It hit the spot before we all saddled
up to take on the infamous PCH.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 20

I have been riding for years all over Norcal
but had never ventured south of Carmel on the
PCH, so I was pretty thrilled to lead the ride
and from what I heard about the ride, it did not
disappoint. Highway 1 boasts every twist, turn,
elevation ascent and descent you could ask for
from a road, not to mention slow tourists that
impeded our pace until we motored past the
Big Sur Park. Also, one of the chances you take
doing this route is the possibility of fog obscuring
the views and as luck would have it, this was
one of those days where the fog hugged much
of Highway 1 along our journey. But no bother,
it was the type of fog that didn’t have that cold
of a bite to it that you would typically experience
on rides north of the Golden Gate.

Because of the encroaching fog, my out
of town riders didn’t get to see some of the
notable landmarks like the Bixby Bridge as it
was shrouded in fog but we did get some scenic
views over the Granite Canyon Bridge and many
more. Early on in the ride the spectacular cliff
drops were hidden by the fog but regardless, it
was going to be about the ride and ride we did
for their lay many more Kodak moments ahead.
I have to say there is something mystical
about the fog when it comes creeping over the
highway as you slice through it and we would
spend a lot of the day playing hide and seek
with the wafting mists.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 21

Big Sur was a rush to ride through with all the tall redwoods
sprinkled with campgrounds and eateries along the way, but
we were on a mission and the road side venues and chow
stops would have to wait until another trip. Continuing on
past through the Santa Lucia Mountains, our ride really took
on character when we entered the Silver Creek Wilderness/
Salmon Creek Falls area with rocky bluffs and plunging
cliffs. This part of the Cabrillo Highway tested our riding
skills with the pace we were riding. The road dished out
roller coaster climbs up and down the hills with tight radius
curves thrown in the mix. It is the West Coast version of the
infamous Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina. This ride is
filled with stunning coastal scenery that tempts you to look
everywhere but the road, but maintaining attentiveness
was the order of the day if we were going to get to BF13 in
one piece.

A highlight of the run capturing our attention was Elephant
Seal Point near Hearst Castle immediately off the side of
Highway 1. This was a site to behold for my land locked
Midwest pals who have no ocean front views like this

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 22

back home. It stopped all of us in our tracks and as
we whipped out our cell cameras like we were drawing
pistols to get photos of dozens of lumbering Elephant
Seals spread all over the beach. Truly a sight to see
when you are down in these parts near San Simeon.

After an overnight stay at the halfway point in Pismo
Beach, we continued South on the 101 picking up the
PCH just South of Ventura through Point Magu State
Park. With little fog hugging the coast this day, we were
treated to unencumbered views of the coastal bluffs
hugged by the SoCal beaches. Dotting the beaches
were these peculiar looking lifeguard towers and it
dawned on me why they looked so familiar, these
were some of the very beaches featured in the 80’s
show-Baywatch. Nice, but didn’t see the likes of David
Hasselhoff or Pamela Anderson anywhere!

When down in these parts of SoCal, we were told the
place to have lunch was Neptune’s Net in Malibu. This
fish fry place is popular spot for Los Angelen bikers
and hot-rodder’s. I can vouch that the fish and chips
with crab cakes were quite tasty and can see why this
place has attracted visitors since 1956. This popular
eatery has also been used in many Hollywood movies
including Point Break, Fast and Furious and Iron Man
3. Provenance!

Before heading into LA proper, we took to the hills
above Malibu to the Rock Store in Cornell, touted
as “the world’s best moto hangout.” It was a Friday
afternoon and the place had about a dozen bikers
hanging out. This spot is considered a Hollywood
hangout with celebrities frequenting often, although
we encountered none. They serve diner food but
Neptune’s Net had filled that bill for us already. You
might recognize the Rock Store as it was featured in a
recent insurance commercial featuring a gecko telling

EVENT

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 25

Thanks for the Memories

For about 21 years we’ve been volunteering our efforts to keep our readers informed about motorcycle events and proposing things to see
in “America the Beautiful”. We started this adventure to help Toni and Brian and to publicize events that we enjoyed, sometimes covering
4 or 5 a month; never thinking it would last so long. Now, Judy and my lives are heading in new directions. We have had a blast over these years.
We have traveled throughout the Southeast covering rallies, hill climbs, toy and memorial rides, fundraisers, races, bike shows, and lots of other
events. We have met many lifelong friends along the way. Our love of the motorcycle life endures and we will continue to see y’all along the way.
Many of the most memorable events are priceless. Sitting on Evel Knievel’s bus for an hour-long, one on one interview is unforgettable.
Finagling press passes to the INDY 500 and the Red Bull Air Races got our readers up close and personal to the racers. Climbing muddy hills,
to get hill climb close-ups, and standing in the dust of flat tracks or ducking, as a superbike racer crashes, sometimes got hairy. Who could forget the
Halloween rallies in New Orleans? And how about the good times with Bikers Who Care at their three-day ride and after
party. Also, road trips provided places to see and enjoy the beauty God has provided us bikers to marvel at. It’s been a
hard decision, but now it is the time to change direction. As we have horses, summer is the only time we can leave
home to travel. Now, we spend more and more time, in overseas travel, so our time to cover summer events is
limited and is becoming more like work. So it’s time to move in a new direction. If we take a road trip in the US,
with the agreement of Thunder Roads Magazine® management, we will file stories of interesting places we’ve seen.
Having a new Corvette also leads to new adventures. It’s been a GREAT 21 years and I’m sure we will miss
being a monthly part of your motorcycle life. We hope that we have added a little to your reading enjoyment.
Be sure to say “Hello”, when you see us on the road. Best wishes for the future to Brian and Toni,
Scott and Denise, April, the other publishers, who printed our stories, and the rest of the
Thunder Roads Magazine® family! It’s been a great ride!

As Always, RideCSoaofpeearndanHdaveJuFudny!!

We'll still share the wind ...

Cooper & Judy Chilton (Coop & Jude)

We want to honor these two phenomenal souls whom literally, the Flagship edition of Thunder Roads® Tennessee, would not

have been possible without their unparalleled passion and commitment to the biker community that they love and live. For (15)

years straight they never turned down a story, ride, concert, grand opening, charity event; you name it, and They. Were. There.!

They’re off across America and abroad and having the time of their lives, and we truly don’t know any other couple that lives life

to the fullest, nor any couple that deserves it more. We shared so many unforgettable times with them and can say with total

sincerity that the Tennessee edition of Thunder Roads Magazine® would not have had near the coverage of all that was truly

memorable if not for the articles and breathtaking photographs of Cooper Chilton, Photojournalist, and his Ace Accomplice and

partner in mischief, Judy Chilton. We Thank You Both from our hearts and souls, for all that you made look so effortless, which

is exactly how pros always do. Our endless love and gratitude, Toni & Brian, Founders –
