Each May, during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, TRM NorCal like to encourage safe driving habits among all road users and safe riding habits among all motorcyclists. The 3 car lengths I leave between the car in front of me isn’t for you to cut me off! Contrary to popular belief, I can’t stop my bike on a dime! If you see me coming down the road while you’re waiting to pull out from your driveway or an intersecting road, I’m going faster than you think, so please wait those few extra seconds to let me pass you by. If you’re trying to make a right turn on red, don’t do it in front of me, you don’t have the right of way! I speed up, when in your blind spot, not to race, but so you see me! Don’t try to pass me on the right just to cut me off. I ride in the left lane, 10-15 MPH over the speed limit so I only have to worry about cars on my right side. Please put your phone down, and STOP TEXTING, because the life you jeopardize is MINE and others who have Children, Wives, Husbands, and Parents to come home to. My bike is loud so you can hear me coming. When making a lane change, the manufacturer of the car you bought installed little devices known as MIRRORS and TURN SIGNALS, so I strongly suggest that you use them every time and also, don’t be afraid to give a quick look over your shoulder before you barge into the lane I possess. I ride with my high beams on at times so you can see me and I can see deer. And if you think my headlight is too bright, you should step out and take a look at how blinding your HID or LED *low beams* are at night! So PLEASE watch out for me and all my Brothers and Sisters, every time you are on the road. Better yet, make it a habit and we’ll all be better off!

Let’s RIDE! May is an exciting time of year as most of us have shrugged off the winter blahs and are gearing up for the ride season. It is the time for making weekend plans on where to ride or maybe even planning a long road trip somewhere. With that, it goes without saying that we must always stay aware of our surroundings while out on the road. This is a good reminder for all that May has been designated as Motorcycle Awareness Month. Unfortunately, the others who share the highways and roads with us are not paying attention to what is going on around them. Always remember this whether you are behind the wheel or on your bike. So many lives can change in a split second if a wifehusband-father-mother-daughter or son were killed due to negligence. Take a moment to imagine the devastation of loss among YOUR circle of family and friends…now magnify that same loss to the other folks that are on the roadway with you. Believe us, whatever was so important that could not wait will suddenly seem so insignificant! You have heard us go on and on about motorists and increased cell phone usage. It is just an irresponsible thing to do. So let’s all just not do it! And please encourage, shame or whatever it takes to get others around us to stop doing it as well. You are putting yourself at risk - but you are also putting all other people around you at risk - especially those of us on motorcycles. Don’t forget that May 14th is Mother’s Day - so make sure you let all the mothers in your life know how much they are appreciated. There… you can’t say we didn’t remind you! As I write this article, we have watched 2 large US banks close abruptly and many others are in shady territory. It seems the housing market is at a tipping point and the volatility of the money markets are on the verge of bursting. I don’t pay too much attention to the news or the political agendas of major networks, but I do know we are in a volatile time for banking, housing, and the market. The crazy thing is, we have seen this before on many different occasions. It seems the companies and commodities we put our hopes into eventually crash or simply vanish. If we have lived for any amount of time, we know everything to be cyclical in nature. Housing markets go up and down, the money market goes up and down and inflation goes up and down. Okay inflation goes mostly up, but you get the meaning. Remember, before the current banking fiasco we are witnessing, it was the large corporate breakdowns and scandals of companies like Enron, WorldCom, GM, Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual which are only 5 of the big 31 that has frauded the American people. These companies stole billions of dollars in unprecedented ways from the American people and drove many families to bankruptcy, losing life savings, retirement plans, and college educational plans were all washed down the drain in a matter of weeks. Hundreds of thousands of people placed their entire life savings in the hands of the so-called “experts”, only to be taken advantage of and left out to dry. It seemed that while all the employees and investors were taking it in the shorts, the financial gurus at the top of the chain, left with billions of American dollars and simply vanished. Nothing was ever paid back to the people who lost all the money they wholeheartedly invested. It was a blatant slap in the face and seemed that no one cared what became of the families that lost everything. Many things have changed since the meltdowns of WorldCom’s, Enron’s of the world, as new laws were placed on large institutions like these. And just when you think everything is safe, you hear of 2 very large banking institutions, simply locking their doors and closing? This has caused a shock wave around the world and of course in the US. It even shoots closer to home with one of the largest banks in Silicon Valley being one of the two. Everyone has been talking about it, it’s been in the news almost every day and it once again, putting the fear into the American people about their safety, their investments, and their future. It has many people questioning the banking system and if they should be moving their investments, going back to paying cash again and in fear about the future of their families. I too am wondering about some of these same things, but I am also contemplating how much emphasis and worry people are putting into their monetary assets and how much nonchalant worry and contemplation is being put into their salvation. We put so much time and effort into regulating where our money should go, when we take little to no time contemplating our eternity. The banking industry says they are the safest bet and if you invest your money in their institution, they will guarantee safety and a return. Really? A Guarantee? A Return? From the past 20-30 years, it don’t look so good. In contrast, putting your trust in God is a guarantee and a full return. Jesus spoke, when you trust in him, you also trust in God. He also said he has come to save the world from oppression and not to take, but to give. He says, he did not come to judge the world but to save the world. I wonder if we took as much time to contemplate our salvation as we do our monetary investments, that we find the return on investment of giving our hearts and possessions over to the care of God would be far greater of a return of any so-called guaranteed percentage a bank or company could give. The investment to have God in your life takes no money and has an automatic guarantee. And, it is free by faith, and the return is priceless. Stopping worrying about the monetary distress of others and start living free, knowing his arms are wide open and waiting for you. “The Best Thing In Life Is Definitely Free” John 7:46 I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. RIDE DESTINATION: Hollister - Carmel Valley Last month, the bad weather (depending on how you look at it) continued here in NorCal. When it came time for me to get out and about, my choices were limited. To the east it was rain, snow, and cold. North was more rain. Luckily a few pretty good days opened up to the southwest. So, I packed up the bagger and headed down to Carmel Valley. This ended up being one of the nicest rides that I’ve had in a while. With all the rain, and now a little sunshine, the hills and mountains were beautifully green with huge patches of yellow and sometimes orange wildflowers. Definitely one of the best rides I’ve had down I5. It’s usually just brown and windy. At Santa Nella, I turned west on SR152. The San Luis Reservoir was overflowing and with everything so green and blooming, it was a very picturesque scene. I decided to lunch at Casa De Fruta in Hollister, and after a spirited ride through the valley, I put the kickstand down out front. Along with a very nice restaurant, you’ll find a little bit of everything there. A fruit stand, wine store, all kinds of desserts, a motel and camping facilities, even an amusement park for the kiddos (www.casadefruta.com) Italian immigrants planted the first orchards there in 1908. In the 1940’s, the Zanger family opened a cherry stand which has now grown into one of the most unique places around. Over 2 million people visit every year. Feeling refreshed, I continued my trek down to Carmel Valley. I would be staying at the Carmel Valley Lodge (www. valleylodge.com) for the next couple of days. Had an excellent stay. After getting out and riding during the day, I’d get back and relax in the spa for a while. Then later, grab a drink or two and sit down at the firepit. What a great way to unwind. For eats, it’s just a short hop over to the Village. There you will find several fine establishments. For dinner I chose Café Rustica. A cozy little French restaurant with quite a diverse menu. I thought I might have the escargot with a baby spinach salad, topped off with a vegetarian plate. Nah! I had the rib-eye, and it was very good at that! The next morning, I set out on a little adventure. I would San Luis Reservoir Hollister Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 8

Fired up, I rode through the Village and continued down E Carmel Valley Rd. This is a must do if you’re in the area. Plenty of twists and turns as you pass through a small valley lined with some of the gnarliest looking trees you’ll see anywhere. Sometimes you feel like you’re riding down a hotel hallway, although you’re enclosed in a canopy of branches and leaves. I really enjoyed that ride down to the Arroyo Seco Bridge. I did some exploring around the bridge before heading further east on Arroyo Seco Road. Mostly farmland through here, although the mountains to the west produce a fine backdrop. After Fort Romie, River Road will take you up to SR68. There, I turned back west. I made a short detour at San Talbot Motorcycle Museum Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 9
Benencia Road before making my way back to Carmel Valley via Laurels Grade. Laurels Grade was just the right piece of asphalt to finish up on. After that exhilarating jaunt, I stopped in at the Running Iron Restaurant and Saloon for a midday meal. Another fine Carmel Valley establishment. Mix in some old Western trappings with some good grub and cocktails, make it the place to hang out in the Village. By the way, a Running Iron was mostly used by cattle rustlers back in the day. Instead of the harder to fabricate and more definitive stamp Iron, with a Running Iron, rustlers could try and freehand or change a ranches brand. Unless there was law around, if someone was caught with one, many times they were hung on the spot. Before making my way back to the lodge, I stopped over at the Talbott Motorcycle Museum. If you like vintage motorcycles, you’ll really enjoy viewing their extensive collection. Barry and Mary were excellent hosts, giving me the tour and lots of info on the various machines (www. mototalbott.com) For you racing fans out there, the 2023 Moto America SpeedFest will take place July 7-9 at the Laguna Seca Raceway. Come out and watch the superbikes traverse this challenging 2.238 road course. I think it might be a good excuse to come back this way. Well, it was an exceptional few days. I would highly recommend an early spring trip. Two thumbs up! Later! If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley 14th Annual Rabbit Run You have probably heard this before, bikers look forward to an opportunity to ride their bikes and support a good cause. It’s true. We were on the road early, riding to the 14th Annual Rabbit Run hosted by the Sisters of Scota WMC. This fundraiser ride and event raises money to grant the fees so foster children may attend summer camp at Lake Francis. We give our support by attending, registering, buying raffle tickets and donating to the fund. First stop was to meet up with our group. Two rides on our calendar that day, we were pleased to see 19 Sierra Thunder HOG members riding with us, and some members meeting for a ride to another event. Leaving on time, our ride leader took us to Loma Rica. We moved along quickly, not many cages on the road. It was a cool morning. The sun was peeking through bright white clouds that were rolling through a vivid blue sky. The heavy rainfall from winter soaked thirsty fields and bare trees. Spring is finally here, giving us a beautiful view of lush green pastures with patches of wild flowers. An hour riding time and we arrived at the sign in-starting location. Bikes filled the parking lot, lined up and waiting for their riders who were mingling about enjoying coffee and donuts after registering for the ride and event. There were 226 riders signed in and registered, with members from at least 18 different clubs. The Ride Captain gathered everyone for a safety meeting, explaining the route and road conditions. She explained this is a guided ride through the foothills of Yuba County to Lake Francis Resort in Dobbins. Fresh snow fell two days before. Riders should expect tight twisty turns and snow on Oregon Hill Road. The Sisters did a final pre-ride the day before the event to check the route. They removed road hazards for the safety of everyone on the pack ride, even swept gravel off the road. As always, ride your own ride, the route might not be for beginners. After the safety meeting, Tornado Jones, President of the Roseville CMA Riders of the Cross, shared a prayer and blessing for the riders. Motorcycles revving and kickstands up, riders followed the ride leader out of the parking lot. Beautiful ranches and small farms surrounded both sides of the road. Cattle were grazing in the wide-open fields, hills and mountains are within our view. Riding up to Lake Francis through the woods, riders came upon that snow along the side of the road. A few mentioned seeing four deer running through the tall brush under the pine trees. There was a slight mishap along the way, only about ten minutes from the resort. Coming into one of those tight twisty turns just a little too fast, the bike hit a muddy embankment and went down. Riding single file, no one else was involved. Laying on its left side, rear tire up, riders stopped to assist. Emergency medical technicians came to the scene. The bike was picked up and given a good check over. With only a few bruises, the rider was released, happy to be able to finish the ride and have fun at the event. Upon arriving at Lake Francis Resort, the atmosphere was full of excitement with activity buzzing around the place. Sort of a two-part gig, the Sisters host an annual Easter event for foster kids living in the area. Festivities for the kids includes an Easter egg hunt, face painting, outdoor games and a pizza party. The Sisters hand assembled 100 Easter baskets and filled them with special goodies for the kids. The bikers roll in and the adult festivities begin. Live music is playing. People are laughing, talking and visiting with the vendors. Guests enjoyed a special holiday luncheon prepared by the Sisters. Raffle prizewinners collected their booty. The Ride-In Bike Show deserves special attention. This year the Founders Choice award recipient is Matthew Wiggins, with his 2016 Harley Davidson Road Glide Special. He told me this bike is no Garage Queen. Gifts include a financial grant that will pay the cost for approximately 40 foster kids to attend summer camp at Camp Rockin U, located at Lake Francis Resort. According to the Camp’s website, camping kids are ages 7-14. The cost is $530 each, for one week of camp activities, staying in a cabin and three meals daily. Kids can swim, hike, canoe, fish, learn archery, play a team sport, see the night stars, sing songs, and enjoy the camaraderie of camp in the summertime. They learn about life in the woods and might see a few deer, hopefully no bears. Attending summer camp is a memory that no kid ever forgets. March 11 (Placerville) As the Irish would say, “It’s a nice soft day” (meaning “It’s lashing out of the heavens!”) That didn’t stop Hangtown Boozefighters MC “Gallows Crew” from putting on their annual St. Patrick’s Day Party. This year’s party ended up with over 200 attendees braving the weather, consisting of a large faction of the local community of El Dorado County, various motorcycle clubs as well as members from Boozefighter chapters spanning from northern to southern California and a few from surrounding States. In addition to Saturday’s great social atmosphere, the party also featured our signature corned beef and cabbage meal prepared by Hangtown BFMC, a beer chug competition, kick ass raffles, and a live performance by Southbound, as well as multiple vendor displays. For the past 20 years now, Hangtown Boozefighters (a nonprofit charitable organization) have been putting on this event for our local community and large portion of the proceeds from the event will continue to be utilized towards donations and charitable contributions to those in need in the community of El Dorado County over the next year. Much thanks to everyone that contributed to making our Annual St. Patty’s Party a success. Lil’ Joey saw that his Grandma took her dentures out every night and put them in a clean paper towel on her bedside table. He also knew that all his baby teeth had come out and he had received all the money he was ever going to get from the Tooth Fairy. He snuck into his Grandma’s room after everyone was asleep and took just her upper denture and placed them under his pillow. Grandma had one eye on Lil’ Joey (as she always did) and snuck in after he fell asleep and gently eased her denture back from under his pillow and left a note in their place. Lil’ Joey woke up the next morning and was so excited to see if his little scam worked and just how much money was waiting for him. He yanked up the pillow and underneath was a note that read: Nice Try Lil’ Joey, I have returned your Grandma’s denture to her bedside table. You’re smart enough to get a job before or after school, quit scamming kid. Love ya’, Tooth Fairy - ------------------------------------------------------------- 4 Undeniable Facts: 1. We all love to spend money buying new clothes but we never realize that the best moments in life are enjoyed without clothes. 2. Having a cold drink on hot day with a few friends is nice, but having a hot friend on a cold night after a few drinks – Priceless! 3. Breaking News: Condoms don’t guarantee safe sex anymore. A friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot dead by the woman’s husband. 4. A debate over a girl’s bust size is like choosing between Coors, Heineken, Corona, & Budweiser. Men may state their preference, but will happily grab whatever is avail - able. Earl points at the flatbed and says, “Send my dang lawn out to git mowed, fool.” ------------------------------------------------------------ Captain Jack, a long time fishing boat Owner, walked into his fave nautical themed bar n’ grill; the Tiki Hut, and sat down just as the 10pm news was coming on. He looked 2 barstools down at this good looking blonde and thought he’d have some fun. The news was covering a story of a man on a ledge of a very tall building and he was preparing himself to jump. The blonde looked at Captain Jack and said, “Do you think he’ll jump?” Captain Jack replied, “You know what, I bet he will, he looks determined to me.” Blondie says, “Well, he looks a tad scared to me and I’ll bet ya’ $50. that he won’t do it.” Just as Blondie placed her $50. on the bar, the guy did a swan dive off of the building, thankfully falling into a mam - moth net being held up by many firemen and volunteers. Blondie was very upset and handed her $50. to Captain Jack, saying, “Oh well, fair is fair, here’s your money.” Captain Jack was a rogue but an honest one and replied, “I can’t take your money, I actually saw this on the 5:00 o’clock news and knew that he would jump.” Blondie looked directly at Captain Jack and said, “I did too, but I really didn’t think that he’d do it again!” Jack took her $50. and immediately ordered double shots of dark Rum for the two of them. ------------------------------------------------------------ “Scrubs” texts his friend and neighbor: “Dawg”, I’m sorry. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been helping myself to your wife when you’re not around; probably more than you. I know it’s no excuse but I don’t get it at home. I hope you’ll accept my sincer - est apology. It will never happen again!” Poor old Dawg, feeling outrage and betrayed, grabs his gun, goes into the bedroom and without a word shoots his wife. Blog by Olivia Goheen for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys Whether you’re new to riding or a seasoned veteran, chances are you’ve heard of The Litas. This motorcycle group has become a global movement empowering women motorcycle riders around the world. Jessica Wise is the leading woman behind the riding collective and the founder of the motorcycle apparel brand Hell Babes. Her unwavering determination and passion for motorcycles have not only shattered stereotypes but paved the way for a new generation of female riders to feel confident on the road and look stylish doing it. In this article, we dive into the inspiring story of Jessica Wise and how she’s revolutionizing the motorcycle industry one ride at a time. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Jessica Wise: I’m living in Salt Lake City right now. I’m from Washington State. I’ve been here for about 13 years, so quite a while. I started The Litas. I really wanted to find my own community of women riders. I love motorcycles. I’ve been in this [motorcycle] world for a while, but I’m especially passionate about getting more women into riding. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Tell us how you got started in motorcycles? Jessica Wise: I was going to the University of Utah and I was sitting there waiting for the dorm bus to come pick me up and take me back up to the dorms. I saw a girl ride by on a motorcycle and I think that was the first time I’d ever seen a woman riding a motorcycle. She was younger like me. She had this really cute leather backpack on and I think it just made an impression. Six months prior, I was in Montana driving with my family. We have a cabin there and I saw a bunch of motorcycles ride by and I was like, “I think I want to get a motorcycle.” My family was like, “oh yeah, you want to get a hog? That’s really crazy.” And I was like, “yeah, I think I want to do it.” There’s nothing that motivates me more than people thinking I can’t do something. I think that fueled my fire a little bit. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Talk to me a little bit more about the genesis of The Litas. Jessica Wise: Where it started was, I was dating a guy that I was totally head over heels in love with and he broke up with me and I was super brokenhearted. It was Thanksgiving break. I was hanging out at my parent’s house for a couple of weeks and I saw a post on Instagram of a bunch of women riding together. It was probably 15 women, some downtown area. I can’t remember what women’s group it was. I was like, “that looks really cool. I think I need that in my life.” I think I also just needed something to throw myself into. College can be kind of lonely. I didn’t have a ton of friends at college. I guess I was wanting more connection. And so I think that just sparked the idea — I want to start a women’s riding group. And I think because of the place I was at in my life with the heartbreak and things were kind of hard, I especially needed it. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: I love that. The Phoenix rises from the ashes. And honestly, that’s one of the best ways to go about heartbreaks — doing something you love and then looking where it’s turned. Thank you, guy, for breaking up with me because look where I am now. Jessica Wise: Also the funny thing is, he is now my husband! Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Why do you think this has been such a global success in such a short time? And how has it exploded? Talk to me about how and why you think that happened. Jessica Wise:I think there are a lot of factors. Honestly, I feel like the success of anything is really a combination of the right timing opportunity and the ambition to figure it out and get it done. And then at the same time, I think there were a lot of women who were in the exact same place that I was — looking for connection and community and a place to belong. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: If someone wants to start a chapter, what’s the process on how they can do that? Jessica Wise: Usually three riders come together and they submit through The Litas website to start a branch. Then we get to know them a little bit and onboard them. Once we get them up on the website, they can start accepting members. I say that loosely because we are an open-riding group. But then riders can go in and submit their info, so now they’ll get the branch communication about rides and events. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: So what’s something about the motorcycle community that you really love and that you really don’t like? Jessica Wise: One thing that I love is that I feel like because of The Litas, there’s so much inclusivity. Something I don’t like — that might be a hard one. Honestly, I feel like I can’t think of anything. To get where I am now, I really had to keep a very positive optimistic mindset because there are so many roadblocks. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What was the best advice you ever got when you became a rider? Jessica Wise: Some of the best advice I ever got would be if you ever hop on a motorcycle that’s not yours, don’t think that you can just ride it. Approach it slowly and feel it out and get a feel for it. I think that’s really important in order to stay safe. And then another one is always riding within your comfort level.
