Preparation is a virtue. Preparation is a character trait. Preparation is what you do every day to get ready for the day you arrive. It’s the day you arrive at a chosen destination by the goals you set and the dreams you desire to accomplish. There is nothing worse than getting to your destination unprepared to enjoy the accomplishments you worked so hard to achieve. Unless you prepare your character within yourself, your accomplishments will be limited by the person you have become along the way. Have you ever worked for a narcissist who somehow came into a great deal of money, only to treat his employees like dogs and use his money as bribery to purchase what he wants, even if it means stepping on people along the way? Have you ever seen someone get a promotion they don’t deserve because while they may have been in their current job longer, but they’re lacking the character and experience to do the job? Personally, I don’t like rewarding for the sake of longevity, but rather for the value someone brings to the position and the team. It can be demoralizing and humiliating to the one who deserves the promotion because of their character and experience. Promotions, status, or positions should only be given based on the value that one brings to the organization. In these scenarios, although the individuals may get to their destination or achieve their goal, but they may have failed to prepare themselves with the values it takes to lead others. Yes, one is rich and one has labeled status, but in the end, the money will be gone and the status will fade. Personal development and preparing yourself to live your dreams is possible. In speaking from experience, there is no greater journey and feeling than accomplishing your dreams and goals while having the character to back it up. In leading many teams, ministries, and organizations in my career, one thing I did not do and still don’t do, is wear labels, telling people who I am or the status of my positions or accomplishments. The philosophy behind this is simple; if I need to tell you my position or status, then I am really not living it. By my actions and demeanor, one should already be able to see and know my position. I never wore a Regional Director Patch on my cut. I never wore a President Patch on my cut. I don’t wear a Pastor ribbon when I preach, and don’t wear a CEO label when I am leading an organization. Over the past 35 years, I continue to work diligently on my personal value system and character development in being a better husband, father, and grandfather. It is not for the respect of others or my family, but for the respect I have in myself. It took me a long time to figure out that it’s not the man I claim to be, but the man I am. Is it hard? Super hard! Does it take work? Lots! Did I have to make some unpopular decisions and sacrifices? Of course! Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY! In the bible as well as the Big Book of AA, there are some promises that could be had by anyone, yet few ever truly find them or live them. Promises of abundance, peace, contentment, joy, love, leadership, mental stability, reuniting with family, sobriety, saved marriages, strong children, and awesome dreams fulfilled. The problem is, not many want to do the work! Sure, they want the promises, yet the work is only accomplished by a few. It’s baffling why some get it and some don’t. But I’ve come to believe it is possible for anyone who is willing to do the hard and painful work. Transformation is painful, but possible. Transformation is gruesome, but glorious. Transformation can be lonely, but courageous. We are in awe of the monarch butterfly suspended in midair with its colorful wing of yellow, orange, and purple floating on the slightest breeze. We chase them trying to get a closer look at their beauty, not realizing what went on inside the cocoon just a few days prior. The caterpillar liquified itself into a blob of goo, so the metamorphosis could take place. The excruciating pain and humility of becoming nothing into becoming one of the most beautiful creatures on the planet is a modern-day miracle that happens to butterflies, and yes, even humans. Sure, the caterpillar wanted to become the butterfly, but unless it was prepared to do the work and melt its past away, it would always be a cocoon and spend its life rummaging around in the yuck instead of bringing beauty into the world. You too have the opportunity to accomplish your dreams and goals, but beware of not preparing your mind and your heart for the work it takes to get there. But not only to get there, but to stay there. You want to lead? Do the work! Want your dreams to come true? Do the work! Want all the promises God has for you? DO THE WORK! Need some help? EVENT Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 7

RIDE DESTINATION Las Vegas, Nevada - Tusayan, Arizona – Kanab, Utah I n last month’s issue, we had made it to Beatty, Nevada. Our next stop would be Las Vegas. The kids had booked a couple of rooms at Crockford’s and we were quite impressed with this fine hotel. Plenty of choices as far as restaurants, five pools, a workout room, and some great views of the strip. Finally checked in, we all settled in for the night. With the dawn of a new day, we met up for breakfast before beginning our daily adventure. Juniors fit the bill nicely. With the grandkids in tow, we made our way over to one of the most unique places around. This would be Area 15, more specifically Meow Wolf. Area 15 is described as an immersive entertainment and events district. (www.area15. com) If you think you’d like an ‘out there’ visual experience, this is the spot. Yes, the visual art you’ll see is incredible! I Timothy Leary would have liked to spend some time here. The following day we would visit another area that I had ridden through last year. That would be the Valley of Fire State Park. I was able to enjoy it more this time around. I had time and family with me. Red rock all around, rugged cliffs and canyons around every turn. Nice! We also did the White Domes hike while enjoying the park. Fun Day! This day wasn’t quite over yet. We decided to go over to the Venetian for dinner. The Venetian is also a great place to just walk around and explore. So much to see. For the culinary part of our evening, we decided on The Trattoria Reggiano. It turned out to be a good choice. A cozy café-type atmosphere with an excellent choice of cuisine. With all the ornate Italian architecture, the Venetian, like I said, is a beautiful place to visit. Next time we’re there, we are going to take the Gondola through the canal. Well, the Las Vegas portion of our trip had come to an end, so we were off again. We would end the day at the Grand Hotel in Tusayan, Arizona (www. grandcanyongrandhotel.com) which is just outside Grand Canyon National Park. But, since we would be passing right by, a stop at Hoover Dam was on the agenda. Pretty awesome! We would be some of the 7 million people that visit the dam every year. Work started in 1931 and finished in 1936. This colossal edifice is still considered one of the great feats of engineering. The Grand Hotel is not as fancy as Crockford’s, but very nice, Colorado River from Glen Canyon Crockfords Grand Hotel Fireplace Meow Wolf The Hikers Hoover Dam WhThunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 8

nonetheless. Especially since it has its own restaurant/bar and one excellent, well-stocked gift shop. The indoor pool was very popular with the grandkids. We had to drag them out all wrinkled up and sprouting gills. No matter how many times you visit the Grand Canyon, it’s still just as impressive. Since it wasn’t too strenuous, we walked the Rim Trail out to the village. About a 3-mile walk, or so. There, we would have lunch and do a little shopping. Then, in one of those weird “small world” happenings, we ran into one of our CMA friends in the store. LeeAnn, who resides on the other side of the Canyon at the Desert View Watchtower, just happened to be in the same store at the same time we were. Amazing! After a long day, we took the shuttle back to the parking area and had a leisurely drive back to the hotel. Dinner that night was at the Big E Steakhouse. Pretty cool place. Old West motif, a large menu, and very reasonable. Before putting the Grand Canyon in our rear-view mirror, we would make a quick stop at the Watchtower on our way to Lee’s Ferry. Thanks for the tour LeeAnn. The drive up 89 to the ferry is inspiring. Jagged, red-rocked mountains contrasted against a clear blue sky. Nice! Pulling into the launch area we hooked up with the tour guide. We would be taking the 12-mile pontoon cruise up the Colorado River. What an experience! Putting up through that incredible deep-walled canyon is something you won’t forget. Later, when we hiked out to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook, you could see what looked like a tiny boat going around the bend. We said “hey, we were on a boat just like that a little while ago!” ite Domes Hike Lone Rock Beach Petroglyphs Boat Tour Lone Horse Off River Horseshoe Bend CONTINUED... Continuing on, we checked out the Glen Canyon Viewpoint before making our way to Big Water, Utah. Our hang out for the next couple of days would be the Under Canvas Glamping and Recreation area. (www.undercanvas. com) Been a while since we’d been glampers. We had fun... Did a hike, roasted marshmallows, played some cornhole. The nice things about these tents are a small bathroom and shower in each unit. After heading to Page for lunch one day, we were going to check out Lone Rock Beach on Lake Powell. We got off on a dirt road that led to the beach. Soon we came upon an RV that was leaving but was stuck in some heavy sand. We pulled over to help. Our daughter took the grandkids down to the beach as we tried everything we could to dig them out, but to no avail. In the meantime, a 4WD pickup pulling a huge camper trailer drove past and got stuck in the sand going the other way. Long story short, someone on an adjacent road had a rope and the guy with the 4WD disconnected from his trailer and pulled the RV out. Yay! The people were from Germany and didn’t speak much English. They were very happy and rewarded us all with a bunch of German chocolate. Now back to family # 2. The 4WD was hooked back up and we tried to dig him out, also unsuccessfully. So, the guy with the rope backed his truck up in front of the 4WD truck. They up, both hit the gas, but the rope broke. Jeez! But no worries! Another party comes to the rescue! Two young guys in a jeep pull up. They have some sort of super mylar rope or something. The trucks tie up again, both trucks hit the gas, and this time, away they go! Clear of sand, there were kudos all around. What a day! Well, another adventure was coming to a close. It was time to head back to Vegas. Never wanting to let an opportunity pass, we would do just a little more exploring. On our return route, we would hike out to a fascinating place called the Toadstool Hoodoos in Kanab. Sure enough, toadstool looking rock formations alongside other strange outcroppings. And just outside town, you’ll find the Moqui Caves. Another interesting and unique place to visit. Lots of Native American themed art alongside various artifacts and mineral displays. There is a nice hike up to a see-through cave across the street. If only we knew. Ha! Whew!! What a trip. Lost Coast Annual Getaway March 15-17 (Shelter Cove) This year, 2024, marked the 10th anniversary of our trek up to NorCal’s Lost Coast - the coastal town of Shelter Cove, to be more precise. Lost Coast, you ask? It is because of the rugged terrain, the state and county were unable to justify running the coastal highway system through the area. So, this region remains the most underdeveloped and remote portion of the California coastline. Stan and Terri, the owners of Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal, originally organized this trip as a weekend motorcycle getaway in 2015. Mike Caldwell’s Inn of the Lost Coast was our home away from home. Continuing TRM NorCal’s tradition, the Inn is still party central on Friday night, with the annual Crab Feed and chef extraordinaire Bryan’s Spaghetti Feast on Saturday evening. For the past few years, Barbara Fryed has taken the lead in keeping this event cooking; Lots of family and friends make their way up to take in the fresh coastal air, and to just soak in the magnificent views the Lost Coast offers. This year’s gathering, as usual, was a great success. From the food, to the corn hole tournament, the left, right, center games and the just plain hanging out with friends, everyone had a fine time. Plans are already underway for next year’s event. Article and photos contributed by Chuck & Cindy Loseth. If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley Ride for Reason Reunion Have you ever wondered about what it takes to host a fundraising event? It takes a lot of planning. However, first there is a vision. Someone sees a need and starts looking for people interested in helping to fill the need. They share ideas and make decisions. Like many of us, there was a time when event organizer Ryan Fleenor had struggles in his life. After overcoming those struggles, his heart was filled with gratitude. He began to dream about giving back and making a difference in the community. He wanted to renew hope for others, just like was done for him. Ryan gathered like-minded people who helped him put on small fundraising events. The profits were donated to non-profit organizations that benefit people in need. While on an all-day motorcycle ride with a group of guys, Ryan and Jeff Keith met each other. The two became friends and Ryan shared the story about his dream. Later, Jeff reached out to Ryan suggesting they collaborate on a fundraising event that would benefit Foster Kids. Together they came up with a plan, the Jeff Keith Ride for Reason. The event would be a fun gathering for bikers and music lovers. Their event would start with a motorcycle ride. The ride would lead bikers to a concert venue where they would have a good time enjoying great music. Seeing the dream come together, Ryan knew it was time to become a legit 501c3 organization. He founded Higher Purpose – The Event Foundation. Together, Ryan and Jeff hosted the very popular Ride for Reason for 8 years, until it was time for a break. Ryan realized the non-profit needed new energy. He passed the leadership of Higher Purpose Foundation on to Whitney and John Webb. They took over in 2023 and continued the mission to help others, though on a much smaller scale. The break and change of leadership were good for Higher Jeff Keith with Thunder Roads Cyndee & Taleah Jennifer Belle sings the National Anthem Ride Meeting & Prayer Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

Purpose Foundation. Five years had passed when Ryan and Jeff started serious talk about hosting the Ride for Reason event again. They decided to call it the Ride for Reason Reunion. Jeff suggested the event should be a fundraiser benefiting both Kids and Veteran charities. Ryan presented the idea to the new Higher Purpose Foundation, asking if they would like to participate. Whitney and John were thrilled. Schedules were compared, a date was set and the concert venue was booked. Staying with tradition, like all past Jeff Keith Ride for Reason events, the Reunion began at Harley Davidson Folsom. Registration was available online or in person. 150 VIP tickets with special privileges were offered to sponsors. Three guitars, all signed by members of Tesla, were awarded to the highest auction bidders. Raffle prizes went to lucky ticket buyers. Memorial event tee shirts were available for purchase. The day of the event, Mother Nature was not on their side. During a week of sunny days, this was the only day that rained. Event hosts discussed and decided against canceling the ride versus just meeting at the concert venue. About 100 people showed up at the dealership with only about 30 bikes there to ride. Too wet outside, the group gathered inside the dealership for the opening announcements. Jennifer Belle was the opening Singer. She sang a powerful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Riders went outside, going to their bikes for the ride meeting and prayer, both hosted by the Ride Leader. Ready to roll, bikes headed out, followed by numerous cages. The ride went up Auburn Folsom Road. It was pouring down rain as they passed over Douglas Blvd., in Granite Bay. They turned left off Auburn Folsom at Indian Hill Road, turned onto CA SR193 through Newcastle to Ferrari Ranch Road in Lincoln. They turned on Industrial Blvd in Roseville. The ride ended in Old Roseville, with special event parking in front of the Opera House Saloon. The VIP private party began upstairs in the Opera House. All ticket holders were admitted at 1pm. More than 350 people enjoyed the music and fun entertainment provided by CCsegeR, Austin Mo, Southbound, Halie O’Ryan and Jeff Keith. To all who came out, especially those who went the extra miles and rode in the rain, your generosity is greatly appreciated by the beneficiaries and the people who support those organizations. SPRING FLING2024 April 13 (Sacramento) Looks like most of the real bad weather is definitely behind us. Things are getting nicer here in NorCal. It was that time of year to head over for the annual Hell’s Angels Spring Fling event. The Spring Fling is one of the big early events of the riding season and it is held each year at their impressive clubhouse. It was double fun for me this year as it happened to fall on our daughter’s birthday. So, I was able to have a nice dinner with some family and then slide over for a little after party. Although not bad, it did rain a bit before things got going, but that didn’t dampen the turnout. I could tell that right way when I pulled up a saw the line of bikes out front. Rogue was already on stage slinging the tunes. Yep, Randy and the boys had everyone hoppin’ as usual. Rogue has been an area favorite for a long while now. Harry Fryed was in the house and later uncased his fiddle and joined the band for several songs. His addition to Randy’s signature Janis Joplin covers was especially nice. Cruising around the clubhouse, I ran into Big Gun Chuck and his long-time friend Don. When I say long time, I mean it. They’ve known each other since the 1940’s. We yakked it up for a while and our Walt Grey ride adventure came up when he handed me the aforementioned Big Gun. Man, that thing is fairly heavy! Walt had no problem waving it around though. We laughed! As always, plenty of MC’s were representing that night. I did get a chance to chat with our friend Razor. She was there with some of the Daughters of Darkness crew. They had just returned from a nice little trip to Sin City. Since I had eaten earlier, I guess I missed out on some of the good eating available to those so inclined. Drewski’s Food Truck was there along with some other options depending on your tastes. Also, there was plenty of support gear available at several vendor booths, including the MMA tent. Before closing, I should mention that the big raffle winner was Joe Avila. He won a great looking belt and $250 in cash. I hope everyone had as good a time as I did. TRM NorCal would like to thank the Sacramento HAMC for continuing to host this event. Mark your calendars… Biketoberfest is scheduled for October 5th . Blog by Sheldon Sherman for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys THE PROCESS AFTER THE MOTORCYCLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT While on duty as a Los Angeles Motor Officer, I became a motorcycle accident victim. Even with the experience gained investigating thousands of traffic accidents involving cars and motorcycles… I still found the experience to be painful and frustrating. I did not understand the complex process, and long wait times. My frustration led me to interview some parties involved so I could share the information with fellow riders. Every day, motorcycle riders are involved in motorcycle accidents in California. My hope is this article will help my fellow riders understand that people are not sitting on their hands. They are often waiting for another party involved to fully collect the information they need to process their part. As you read through this article, you can see that there are at least three different opinions and parties involved in the process. The process is complex, and most of the time it is best to contact and attorney. It is important that you keep a record of everything. Every time you talk to someone, get their name, title, date, and the exact time that you talk to them. Also, write a summary of what you discussed to have it for your records. This article includes three different interviews with three different experts. Each expert developed their own advice for a rider who has experienced a motorcycle accident. 1. The Attorney: Chuck Koro, Managing Partner of Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys™ the original motorcycle attorneys and touted as the best motorcycle attorneys nationwide 2. An active Law Enforcement Officer: Myself, Sheldon Sherman 3. An insurance claim adjuster from one of the biggest insurance companies in the United States. The Attorneys Perspective: I spoke with Chuck Koro, the managing partner of Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys. Chuck has decades of experience in representing people involved in motorcycle traffic accidents. Here are the questions I asked and the responses: What is the process when someone calls an attorney’s office after a traffic collision? While in some instances, we file a suit right away, we generally try to resolve the case informally with the insurance company. Once our firm is retained, we order the traffic collision report and notify the insurance companies. We also send preservation of evidence letters to the other driver to preserve all vehicle data from recording devices and videos. Depending on where the accident happened, we may send a private investigator to the site to canvas for witnesses and surveillance footage. In some circumstances, we send our accident reconstructionist to the site. We also order the CAD log from the CHP, which may contain witness information. We follow the client’s medical treatment, and once medical treatment is finished, we request the records and work-related documents if the client misses work. We then send a demand package with all pertinent documents to the insurance company to start the negotiations. If we cannot resolve it with the insurance company, we file a lawsuit, which begins the “discovery” process- depositions and written discovery. Most of the time, after this process, the case goes to mediation which generally gets the case settled. If not, we proceed to trial. How long does the process take from start to finish? It varies widely for various reasons such as fault issues, the extent of the injuries and recovery, the number of parties involved, the time it takes to get the traffic collision report and whether a lawsuit is filed. Can someone collect from the violent victim’s fund if they were involved in a hit-and-run? I have never seen this apply to accident victims. However, The California Victim’s Compensation Fund provides up to $7,500 to the family of someone who was fatally injured for funeral and burial expenses. If there is a recovery from the at-fault driver, it is usually reimbursable. They may reduce depending on the circumstances. If you are injured in a traffic collision at work where you are dealing with lots of different lawyers and workers’ compensation, can that cause the process to take longer? Yes. If you are injured on duty, it complicates the process and takes longer. If you are injured on duty, contact an attorney. If the injured party was injured by someone other than a co-worker, the party can make both a Worker’s Compensation claim and a claim against the other party, but there are several considerations in deciding whether to make only a WC claim , only a civil claim against the other party or both claims. When should someone call a lawyer for a traffic collision? Make the first call to us immediately. (After 911) Should a motorcycle rider or car driver give dash cam footage to the police officer? Yes, it’s evidence. What kind of insurance should riders have? The most common mistake that riders make is not having any, or enough, uninsured/underinsured motorists. Too often, we cannot get a full recovery for our client because the at-fault driver doesn’t have enough insurance or none-at-all, and the rider doesn’t have proper uninsured coverage or none at all. I recommend $250,000 or at least $100,000. The other mistake is not getting GAP insurance when the rider has taken out a large loan on the bike. If the bike is totaled, you will only get the market value. If it is less than the loan, you still have to pay off the loan even though you don’t have the bike.
