Article on Pages 20-23 Now that it is full blown summer time, the temps are rising - so please take care of yourself whether you are hanging at an event all day or on a long ride, REMEMBER to keep yourself hydrated...with water! Not doing so can put you in a world of hurt and it will sneak up on you fast. I learned the hard way several years ago pushing too hard and not taking the time to get fluids (water) in me. The end result was a bad case of heat exhaustion and because my body was unable to regulate its temperature on its own – I got sick as a dog. I would puke up any water that I did drink, I had cramps all over my body and was in a very confused state of mind that I started to try to do really dumb things to try to fix myself. Fortunately for me, my older brother recognized the signs of heat exhaustion and forced my stubborn-self into a bath tub of ice water. This made me mad as hell but I was so cramped up and weak I could not do anything but cuss him out. Thank God he didn’t listen to my complaining because under the circumstances he did the right thing and probably saved me from going into a more dangerous physical condition. This was a very unpleasant experience and could have been disastrous so please take my word for it - it is not worth it, so drink plenty of H20. Energy drinks, beer, whiskey will not help your situation...so drink up... with some good old fashion WATER! Need an idea for Father’s Day on June 18th? INTRODUCING : The 316 Highway How come we ride on numbered roads instead of named roads? In 1917, Wisconsin had ‘had it up to here’ with more than 2,000 miles of ‘trails’ that passed for roads in those days. The Federal Highway System’s website tells us the origin, quoting an old-timer, Wisconsin State Highway Engineer John T. Donaghey. He recalled the 1917 change this way: “Previous to [the number system’s] installation, the ordinary method of directing travel was by referring to forks in the road, schoolhouses, red barns, and various other more or less convenient objects.” Try that on your Google maps app! It’s similar with the Bible; chapter numbers and verse numbers obviously make it easier to locate what you’re looking for. So how did I get started on The 316 Highway? You might consider me an old-timer if I tell you! When I received Christ in March 1964, I was first introduced to John 3:16. In 1968, I heard a preacher refer to John 3:16, and saying, “A study of all the New Testament 3:16s would be valuable!” In 2009, I heard a message from Colossians 3:16 and the desire to write began. A book, several articles, and columns have resulted from that! Join me as we head toward the next milepost on The 316 Highway! I n 1519 Hernando Cortez embarked on a little plateau called Mexico to conquer an empire that held more treasures than one could behold. With 600 men, less than 2 dozen horses and 11 boats, they hit land. They stayed on the sandy beach for a few days instead of making their first charge. Hernando orated to his men speeches of conquest. He talked about adventures and the possibilities of treasures for a lifetime. With only 600 men, it was his only option to build confidence before taking on an entire nation. The men were prepared and ready as they gathered for their first march. As the men took their first step, they heard these three famous words, “Burn the Boats”. A thousand years before, Napoleon did the same thing as he charged Persia. It was not uncommon for leaders to do this throughout history as to awaken the souls of their men. It would only give the men two choices; die or ensure victory. They had to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that defeat was not an option! Most of us are pretty good at complaining about our lives and putting the blame of our outcomes on everyone else except ourselves. I have counseled countless numbers of men and women trying to overcome their own financial, spiritual, emotional and even physical battles. The first question I ask, is if they are willing to “Burn the Boats” that brought them into their particular circumstance. Most of the time they are eager to say yes, only to find out a little later, they had a little dingy hidden around the corner. They were too afraid to “Burn the Boats” in fear of change and maybe even fear of successfully conquering their issue. Many years ago I was asked the same question by a person who became my mentor. I had gotten myself into a very bad predicament and I wanted my life to change. I set off thinking I was prepared for the battle when he asked me, “Are you willing to do whatever it takes to change your life? Are you prepared to “Burn the Boats”? I said, “Yes!” He asked me a few times as he lit each one of my excuses on fire. There were many times I wanted to give up and quit, and take the easy way back to the boats. But I burned them down and had to fight the battle with only one option; die or ensure victory. If you are facing an insurmountable battle, it’s time to set the boats ablaze and move forward onto victory! When moving forward with God, “the one who truly cares for you”, defeat is not an option. Come find out at Thunder Road. Romans 8:37 – No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loves us. EVENT Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 7

RIDE DESTINATION: Lucerne Valley – Yucca Valley – Palm Springs Holey Rocks Several years ago, on one of our rides down to SoCal to see friends and family, we made a weekend stop in Yucca Valley. One of our favorite bands, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones, were playing at Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown. As usual, they did a fine job, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. But even though it’s right next door, we were a little pressed for time and didn’t get a chance to visit Joshua Tree National Park. This year, our daughter and son-in-law invited us to join their family on a trip down there, we were more than happy to tag along! Packed up, we made our way down to Barstow, where we turned south on SR247. This two-laner is pretty much a flat desert until you reach the Lucerne Valley. Then the scenery improves considerably as the local mountains come into play. From there to Yucca Valley, the visuals are much more pleasing. Pioneer Town Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 8

CONTINUED…. Balance Rock In Lucerne Valley, SR247 takes a hard turn east. Right there on the corner though, is a quirky establishment by the name of… (you guessed it) Café 247. This place is the area biker hangout. Lots of motorcycles and other old remnants and collectables are sprinkled around the property. Makes your visit quite interesting. They’ll serve you some fine BBQ and burgers, and if you hit it just right, live music. There’s another unique spot just up the road apiece. You’ll come across two sets of huge boulders that have been covered with all kinds of graffiti. We can’t remember, in all our travels, seeing that much graffiti in one place. It’s worth a quick stop to check it out. Our kids had rented a house and had already settled in when we arrived. Great house, including a spa out back and some outstanding views of the valley. Throw in dozens of bewitching Joshua Trees, (also known scientifically as Yucca brevifolia) set against snow-capped mountains, made our stay a little sweeter. Up and at it the next morning, we headed over to the park. To be honest, going in, I pretty much thought this park would be mostly a lot of cacti and desert, maybe a little mountain or two. Was I ever wrong! Joshua Tree National Park is just darn awesome! All these rock formations jutting up and out of nowhere, monstrous boulders piled on top of one another, sometimes four or more stories high. The rocks are Rock climbing Café 247 Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 9

all different shapes and sizes, some with caves and others with nooks and crannies, that you can explore. We all had a great time climbing up and down these incredible rock mountains. Even the grandkids were digging it. By the way, Joshua Tree got its name from Mormon emigrants crossing the Mojave Desert in the mid 19thcentury. They thought the trees looked like Joshua (from the Old Testament) raising his hands to Heaven in prayer. FDR proclaimed the park a National Monument in 1936. It became a National Park in 1994. It took us two days to cover the many sites that are available to visit. Those included Skull Rock, Split Rock, Barker Dam and the Cholla gardens. There are plenty of hiking trails and lots of camping areas, if you’re so inclined. The afternoon of our second day, we made a short trip to Palm Springs where we celebrated our daughter’s birthday. Although the wind was blowing (that’s an understatement,) the grandkids managed to enjoy some pool time, and we all enjoyed a great meal at 1501 Uptown Gastropub. We highly recommend a visit there. A trip to Yucca Valley wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Pioneertown. It was built in 1946 by actor Dick Curtis. Roy Rogers was also an investor. It was designed to be a place for Hollywood production companies to film their “Old West” themed movies. Hundreds of westerns were made there, including “Judge Roy Bean” and “The Cisco Kid.” Gene Autry filmed his weekly TV show there also. The two main attractions are the aforementioned Pappy and Harriet’s (www.pappyandharriets.com) and the local watering hole, the Red Dog Saloon (www.reddogpioneertown.com) So, on our last evening, we capped off our trip with a pilgrimage to that once thriving town. Well, another adventure is in the books. Thanks for the memories, all. If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley New Members Ride Sierra Thunder Harley Owners Group hosts a New Members Ride, usually the Saturday after our monthly meeting. The intention is to welcome new members with an opportunity to meet and ride with other members. It provides a chance to see how they ride with the group. Sponsored by Harley-Davidson of Rocklin, we accept all Harley owners, seasoned and new riders. With 150 members, everyone can find who best fits their interest and riding ability. The New Member Ride is always a leisurely ride, planned for about four hours, with a stop included for lunch. The April ride was a reschedule because our March New Member Ride was rained out. The plan was to ride through Auburn, Cool, and Garden Valley, winding our way over to Lotus for lunch. The return trip would ride through Rescue and El Dorado Hills. Our friends Brett & Lynn Egen invited us to bring our Harley Group to visit his shop and see their collection of Muscle Cars. We met at H-D Rocklin giving most a chance to socialize before the ride. During this time, we are also taking care of Chapter business. Greeting members, making introductions, taking pictures for social media, and collecting signatures for sign in, with emergency contact info, just in case the need arises. After a brief safety meeting, sharing the route plan, road conditions and safety expectations, we suited up and rode out. I counted 27 bikes with 31 riders. The country is quiet as we ride out of town on Sierra College Boulevard. Not much else, except visible evidence the area is slowly being converted to ranchettes and housing developments. The tall embankments on both sides of the road will be removed and give way to additional lanes. The coming development will link this rural area to the towns that are encroaching at both ends of the road. For now, traffic moves smoothly. The slight uphill rise levels out in a few places, showing an incredible view of valley beyond. A favorite with local bikers, we turned onto SR-193, the Lincoln Newcastle Highway. This is also a smooth two-lane country road with very little traffic. If you are comfortable with turning the throttle a bit, you can pick up speed and zip through the twists and turns. Approaching the 1910 Subway Tunnel, riders twist the throttle here just to hear the roar of their bike as it passes through the tunnel. A melody of loud sounds, this is a biker’s concert. Riding through Auburn towards CA-49, a red light stops us next to Placer High School. A unique metal statue of a Hillman is standing at the edge of the school property. Established in 1897, the school adopted the Hillman as their mascot in the Sierra Thunder HOG Black Z28 - Brett’s Dad’s Car Just Chillin’ Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12

1930’s. The intention was the image of a strong and powerful mountain man, wearing buckskin, beard, coonskin cap and holding a rifle was a representation of the school and its families. Relating to the era and town history, once carrying a rifle, he now holds a flag bearing the Placer High logo. Despite two California wildfires that burned through parts of this forest in 2022, a forest of trees surround the Auburn State Recreation Area. Recent heavy rainfall has filled our creeks and rivers to capacity and beyond. There has been flooding and record levels of snow blanketing the mountains. Water is rushing through the Auburn confluence where the North Fork and the Middle Fork of the American River meet. There is an electronic sign flashing a warning to swimmers, “Stay Alive, Stay out of River. Water is Fast and Cold.” The river carved a path through the canyon. Tall rock walls were cut so the road could follow the river. Since the beginning of time, man has been creating ways to travel over the water. Multiple bridges cross here. The Foresthill Bridge is the tallest bridge in California, at 730 feet above ground. The third highest bridge in America, it also made the list of the 70 highest bridges in the world. A turn onto the CA-49 Bridge takes you over the North Fork of the American River. Steel and concrete debris rests just above the water line at the edge of the mountain. The debris remains from the original State Hwy 49 Georgetown Bridge, built in 1948. Flooded and destroyed, the bridge washed into the river when the Hell Hole Dam broke in Dec 1964. Next to the debris is the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge. Built in 1912, once the longest concrete arch bridge in the world, this is now a pedestrian bridge known as the No Hands Bridge. These are impressive bridge statistics for the land of the Wild West. California did not even become a state until 1850. Winter’s wrath brings spring rewards. Wildflowers bloom vibrant colors of lavender, bright yellow and tangerine orange against a blue sky. We stopped for lunch at the River Shack Deli in Lotus. One couple mentioned they routinely stop across the street in Coloma, and were not even aware the deli was here. Ready for the next part of the day, we took a brisk ride from Lotus to Granite Bay. In the middle of nowhere, turning onto Green Valley Rd., we passed a ’57 Chevy Bel Air. Seeing this car was like an appetizer, getting a taste of what is coming soon. The American muscle car still turns heads. These classic two door cars have big block V-8 engines with loads of power. The muscle car concept originated from hot rod and drag racers seeking the fastest, strongest and most attractive car. The muscle car has the power to compete. Roaring into the neighborhood, the bikes pulled into the back driveway. Curt parked our bike next to the vintage Texaco gas station. Brett walked out of the shop and graciously welcomed everyone. Just about every bit of automobile memorabilia you can imagine, on the shop walls, outside buildings and the fences. We took pictures of our bike next to the gas pumps. The gas station is cool; the cars captured everyone’s attention. Ready and waiting for us. The shop doors open, lights on, cars are everywhere and uncovered. A few in the driveway, more next to the building, and still the shop was full. Some are stacked on top of each other, raised on a lift. Fifteen cars in the shop, one project car and Taz, their 1967 Z28 Gulf Camaro racecar. Without a list, I recall seeing multiple Camaros, Z28s, a Chevelle, Corvette, Mustang Fastback, Nova and a Nomad. Everything shines. There are no visible scuffmarks. This is eye candy. Everyone has a favorite. Brett shared that his favorite is the black 1969 Camaro Z28. Only 24,000 original miles, it holds a special place in his heart because this was his Dad’s car. Brett was patient and the ultimate host. Answering questions, offering a peek inside, he popped the hoods and opened car doors. He started a few of the cars, enjoying the rumble of the powerful motors. Restored or original, Brett has a love story about each one of his cars. He told how he found certain cars, where he gets parts and what work he does himself. A few of his friends stopped by, driving their hot rods. The car guys were just as excited to see the bikes, as the bikers were to see the cars. Everyone had a good time. Those who missed this, and those who came to see, are all asking if we can do this again. Maybe in the fall. Bikes, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Men and Women. Very cool and fun. It was a great day to ride or cruise. Article and photos contributed by Cyndee Reed Van Hooser Vintage Gas Station Spring Rewards Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 13

Editor’s Note: Photographer Rae Lynn recently attended the Autorama in Sacramento in April where the Holy Bike caught her attention and we are thankful that she shared her images of this unique ride with TRM NorCal. The bike is a 1975 Honda 550F super it is called the Holy Bike, because it has 550 holes drilled through the frame, front fork, and fender, 7 holes right through the gas tank. It took me three years to build it in my spare time and it was all built by hand no fancy machines just a grinder, drill press, torch , or welder and assorted handtools. Front wheel is a 21”3x1/2 inch mammoth spoke wheel with a 32”x4 1/2 inch antique truck tire The back 18”x10 1/2 mammoth spoke wheel with a 275/65 18 32 inch tall, offroad, mud tire. The frame and gas tank has all been welded together with an arc welder, and then all the welds have been covered over with real copper using a OXY acetylene torch making it look like it is all welded together with copper. Art: Holy Bike DRAWING BOARD BEFORE CONTINUED ... Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 15

The rear fender is skinned with a copper sheet and hand stamp that says “holy shit’. The gas tank has two copper skins on either side and they are hand-painted with ‘fuck yeah’ on one side and ‘let’s do it’ on the other side and that goes with my gear shifter, which is made out of 2 Harley pushrods and has a copper middle finger on top for the handle The bike has also been assembled with set screws and about 500 castle nuts. There are no actual bolts, I used setscrews with 2 Castle nuts on either side, creating a bolt, all the castle nuts have been hand coated by melting copper over them with a torch. The headlight was my ex-wife’s reading lamp, I got the lamp in the divorce. LOL The bike has no kickstand. It is equipped with airbags and Level Ride air system which is operated by Bluetooth on my cell phone it can go from standing 8” off the ground to sitting right on the ground. The handlebars are made out of copper and reinforced with steel. It has a twist, in-line throttle, and a twist in-line clutch. The seat is an antique tractor seat that I bought on eBay and had copper plated. Exhaust pipe is short and sweet right up by your left front foot Peg and it is equipped with a hot licks flamethrower that is fed by a 80 psi fuel pump that injects gas right into the exhaust pipe to get maximum flame coverage. And to finish it off the whole frame, forks, gas tank and fender have been blued by hand with a torch you give it a purple, blued look with a clearcoat finish. Article contributed by Keith Young. We’ve heard it, known it and lived it…heck, I’ve even written about the worst of it in the past. Riding our bikes on the streets and highways can open us up to certain dangers only motor riders must face. The worst of them can come upon us very quickly. Unfortunately some which can become just as fatal can be the result of years in the saddle. Recently I heard the words “First stage Cancer” from my doctor. Not what you wish to ever hear. But, after prodding and poking me, she just matter of factly said those words. “I’m really worried about this one.” She noted a lesion on the side of my nose as she pointed close to the corner of my eye. “These tend to be quite deep and can be really quick and very bad!” “You ride motorcycles? All sun, no shade!” “Well, I ride to Sturgis every year, and I’ve ridden motors since I was 12 years old. I worked in the sun most of my life. Carpenters have to build their own shade, I said with a grin.” “Not a good combination, skin thins as we age and solar damage is cumulative. Do you wear sun screen?” “Only when I go fishing.” I replied. She shook her head and turned back to note things on her computer. “You’ve had a cancer before?” “Well, I had a cancer in my eye.” “What kind of cancer?” “Eye cancer, you know it was in my eye!” It was at this point I laid out the story how it was discovered and cut from my orbit. “They told me the sunlight coming into my eye from the side was magnified by the lens of my eye, and like burning ants with a magnifying glass as a kid, the intensity on the cells in the corner of my eye were disrupted and caused the cancer.” “You need to wear wrap around sunglasses from now on. Do it!” The eye doctor said. After having one doctor tell me during a surgery on my back…”Oh, I forgot: you have Rhino hide.” I thought I was pretty much ‘bomb proof’ when it came to my leather covering. This latest doctor said: “I’m sending you to a dermatology surgeon… you need to see him really soon.” It didn’t take long before the next doctor said…”You want the good new or the bad news?” “Good of course.” “The one on your ear isn’t cancer…just something that sometimes happens with age, we’ll cut it off anyway.” “What’s the bad news?” This is where the “First Stage Cancer” remark came about. At this point the guy earned his title of surgeon. He quit counting at 15+ and continued on cutting. None of it was pleasant. And for several weeks the scaring gave me the look of a leopard! Most of those places are healing, but several are still of notable concern. We’ll see what’s left when I come back for my next appointment. The best I can relate to you all of you other riders at this time is that skin cancer is a silent killer, and none of this has to appear on your skin like the irregular shaped moles with spots on them that we normally hear about. None of my cancers had a noticeably odd appearance …at least in how I saw my reflection in the mirror. Just kind of rough and wrinkled and puffed up skin. “By next year this might really have been a possibly fatal diagnosis.” He said. Not the best thing a person can hear from the doctor. At the end of the day, most riders never think in terms of their skin more than a tan or a road rash. I never considered it to be as bad as it apparently has gotten. All we do is ride most of the time in the Sunshine, and unlike carpenters- we do not build our own shade. Each year when I have ridden the 1700 miles to South Dakota for Sturgis I arrive looking like a cross between the Thanksgiving turkey and a rare steak…Brown and Red. The return of that long drive comes after two weeks of riding in South Dakota sun and then back across the plains states to my home- All of it in August sun. This year I will be wearing a think layer of SPF 50 in addition to sunglasses with side vision protection. ‘Fool me once…’. I’m not ready to quit riding my motor yet, I sure as heck don’t want the sun to cut my time down to a dirt nap. The sun can be a slow steady killer…It certainly was in my case. Do everything you can to kick its butt by being prepared. Use sun screen and good wrap around shades with UVA and UVB protection. See you in Sturgis this year-- Tanned but nothing extreme. Gonna’ make me a poster for the kitchen - - - - Bread Is Like The Sun - It Rises In The Yeast And Sets In The Waist – ------------------------------------------------------------ Johnny and his wife go to the Zoo and arrive right in front of the gorilla cage. Johnny says to his wife, “Tease him like you tease me all the time!” so the wife takes off her top and the gorilla goes crazy! Johnny yells above all the noise, “Tease him some more like you do me!” so the wife takes off her bra and starts dancing around. Johnny yells super loud, “Go on, do like you do me!” so the wife jumps out of her shorts and only has on ‘floss’ underwear and continues dancing all around all the while the gorilla is literally going bat-chit crazy! Johnny quickly slides the lock on the cage, pushes his wife inside and screams, “Now, tell him you have a head - ache like you do me!” ------------------------------------------------------------ Scoot: “Welcome to McDonald’s, can I take your McOrder?” McDonald’s Boss: (rubs his temples from head splitting headache) “Again, you Do Not have to put Mc in front of everything you say!” Scoot: “Oh, ok, I hear ya’ and turns to the next customer, “Hey there! Welcome to Donald’s.” ------------------------------------------------------------ Bubba is sitting next to a woman who is trying repeatedly to breast feed her baby on the bus. The baby refuses to breast feed and the mother warns, “If you don’t breast feed, I’m going to give it to this man next to me!” The baby still refuses. After about 20 minutes, the woman repeats the “threat’. Bubba clears his throat and says, “Look here lady, you best make up your mind. I was supposed to get off this bus six stops ago.” ------------------------------------------------------------ Saw a coffee mug that had the newly crowned King Charles on it and Camilla was standing next to him wear - ing her crown and it read: To All The Side Chicks....She’s Brought New Hope! ------------------------------------------------------------ Was driving down the road and saw my ex. A blonde goes into a coffee shop and notices there’s a “peel and win” sticker on her coffee cup. So she peels it off and starts screaming, “I’ve won a motorhome! I’ve won a motorhome!” The waitress says, “That’s impossible, the biggest is a free lunch.” But the blonde keeps on screaming, “I’ve won a mo - torhome! I’ve won a motorhome!” Finally, the waitress gets the Manager and he approaches the blonde and says, “Miss, I’m sorry, but you must be mistaken. You couldn’t have won a motorhome because we didn’t even have that as a prize.” The blonde says, “No, it’s not a mistake. I’ve won a motorhome! She hands the ticket to the Manager and he reads it out loud.... “W I N A B A G E L” ------------------------------------------------------------ A little four year old boy is sitting on the toilet. Mom watches for a spell and is amazed at how he came up with this strange ritual. He keeps doing this. His Mom asks, “Billy, are you al - right? Blog by Sheldon Sherman for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys DOC, the founder of the 1776 Patriots of America MC, has had ups and downs in life. He has taken some bad situations in his personal life and turned what he learned from his experience to help others in any way possible through motorcycles. DOC went from having his own house to living out of his car. He had some great jobs to no job at all. DOC had to fight his demons with help from family, friends, and healthcare professionals to help him get back on his feet. He should inspire everyone to fight for a good life regardless of current events. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: When did you start riding motorcycles, and what were you riding? DOC: I started riding dirt bikes when I was nine years old. Once I turned 16, I bought a Trail 90 and rode on the streets for years. Later, I bought a Honda Shadow in 2004 and continued riding on the road. I rode on and off for years, but something clicked in the last five years, and now I cannot stop riding. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What are you riding now? DOC: I currently ride a 2022 Harley Davidson Street Glide Special. I jump on my motorcycle and ride all the time. I have found that when I have a bad day or need to relax, I can depend on motorcycle riding to improve my day. My bike was expensive, but can you put a price on happiness? Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What military branch were you in, and what did you do? DOC: I was in the Army, and my “M.O.S.” was 13 Bravo Artillery. I trained for Iraq with Urban Warfare and was a gunner and driver on a Humvee. My unit did everything from escorting supply trucks to escorting essential personnel for meetings. We would do security while the discussions were going on. I also worked at a detainee facility where we worked with the Iraqi government on interrogations of insurgents. I was also part of the unit that guarded Saddam Hussein. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What did you do after the military? DOC:  I have had multiple jobs after the military, including security, photography, repo, club promoting, case management, teaching, and outreach. I got married and had three kids. I decided to attend college and get my Bachelor of Science in business management in 2020. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys:  What caused things to go downhill for you? DOC: My life started going downhill due to a miscarriage with my wife at the time. Anyone who has lost a child can tell you your mental health will be challenged. A year later, I lost a good-paying job, which sent me spiraling downhill. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys:  What happened when things went downhill for you? DOC:  When I lost my good-paying job and couldn’t find a new job, I started living in my car and finding minimum-wage jobs to try and help get me back on my feet. I was barely surviving and was having difficulty paying for the basics. I went to the V.A. hoping to get some help with housing and P.T.S.D. The V.A. wasn’t willing to help as much as I wanted because I needed to meet a specific criterion. I had difficulty getting to appointments due to a lack of funds to pay for gas and get time off from work. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys:  Who helped you get back on your feet? DOC:  I knew so many people, and you would think they would be more than willing to help a friend, but unfortunately, that wasn’t true. It wasn’t easy to ask anyone for help. It required me to change how I think to be able to start accepting help when I was at the lowest point in my life. Once my brother discovered I was living in my car and staying at friends’ houses occasionally, he forced me to stay with him for a few months to help get me back on my feet. After a few months, I started to get back on my feet, and my sister and her husband let me move in with them. They wanted to ensure I got back on my feet, so they turned their garage into a studio apartment and let me stay there rent-free. It took a year of support from my sister and her husband to help me save enough money to begin a new life. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys:  How did you get back on your feet? DOC: I applied for many jobs but could not get a goodpaying job. I returned to school and earned a bachelor’s degree in business management using my G.I. bill. Since I was using my G.I. bill, I could get money for living expenses which helped me immensely. Once I got my bachelor’s degree, I got a job working for the department of defense as a civilian at Edwards Air Force Base.
