An advantage of being out early is less vehicles on the road. On Riding through the farmlands
the third day, we rode through the gold country where generations Snow in June Riding Ebbetts Pass
of family heritage ties me to the land of the gold rush. We took
SR-4 to Ebbetts Pass, crossing two national forests, the Sierra
and Stanislaus. Blue skies, tall trees, and snow on the ground in
June. A bonus was seeing full lakes and streams with swift running
water, especially with news reminding us of drought. The contrast
of the remains from the Tamarack Fire is shocking. While the
forest is black and brown from burning, there is hope as green life
is coming back. We were riding around Lake Tahoe before noon,
smiling and pointing at Emerald Bay. We rode SR-89 to SR-70
along Feather River Canyon and saw more wildfire devastation,
ending the day with rally festivities at Sierra Steel H.D. in Chico.

Plans for day four were to visit Lake Almanor, Lassen Volcanic
National Park and end at Redding H.D. It was a cold morning
and looked like there might be rain in Lassen. The day before I
did not know I was coming down sick, but that morning I could
not stop the wracking cough that came on late in the night. We
were on the bike sitting at the light, waiting to jump on SR-99
South. Curt pulled up to Rick and said, “I’m taking her home,
go on without us.” Fourteen states represented, 121 riders, our
route - 1,729 miles. Life is fun traveling on a motorcycle. We

RIDE DESTINATION:

NEW MEXICO - TEXAS - LOUISIANA
CONTINUED FROM JULY ISSUE

So, after walking the streets of Tombstone, it was
time to continue my trek east. As I mentioned last
month, my next stop would be Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Later that afternoon, I pulled into Ruidoso and made my
way over to the Convention Center, which was the hub for
this year’s Aspen Cash Motorcycle Rally. This rally takes
place in mid-May. There is a second rally in September
called Golden Aspen. As with any good motorcycle event,
there were bikes everywhere. I went inside to check

Bikers Welcome Ruidoso New Mexico out the vendors and see what registration was all about.
CMA At Aspencash Rally Registration Desk Low and behold, a crew of local Christian Motorcycle
Room At the Silver Dollar Tinnie New Mexico Association folks were manning the booth. I hung around
a while and then went out and did some exploring.
Early evening rolled around, and I rode out to the small town
of Tinnie, New Mexico. I would stay there the next couple
of nights at the Silver Dollar. The Tinnie Silver Dollar is a
local landmark with ties to the community going back over a
hundred years. My room was beautiful, and having a great
restaurant and bar made my stay even better. The buildings
architecture is also pretty impressive.

The next morning, I decided to take a little ride. I would
ride what the locals call “the Billy the Kid Trail.” It’s an 80-
mile loop through the cities of Hondo, Lincoln, Capitan,
and Ruidoso. The area was made famous in the 1870’s
by events surrounding what’s known as the Lincoln County
War. Two rival factions, one led by James Dolan, the other
by John Tunstall, fought for regional dominance. Both
sides had their supporters, including more than a few hired
gunmen. When Tunstall was murdered by Dolan’s men in
1876, all hell broke loose. William Bonney (aka Billy the
Kid), who worked for Tunstall, and “the Regulators” exacted
revenge on their rivals. As things escalated, both sides
claimed to have the law on their side, similar to what happened
in Tombstone. The shootouts and bushwhacking continued,
culminating in a final confrontation in the City of Lincoln. The
US Army stepped in, and after a small battle and some arrests,
it was over. Billy the Kid and several Regulators escaped but
continued a life of crime. Eventually, Sheriff Pat Garrett and
his Posse tracked them down and put them to rest. Today, a
lot of the contemporary buildings are still standing in Lincoln.
There are plaques on both sides of the main drag that give you
information about each historical site.

Back on the highway, I made the nice scenic ride over
to Fort Stanton. This old Army base has had many faces
over the years. It was built in 1855 as a bulwark against
the local Apaches. Since then, it has been in the hands
of the Confederate Army, the home of African American
Buffalo Soldiers, a TB hospital, a German POW camp, and
a women’s prison, to name a few.

Leaving Fort Stanton, my next stop would be Capitan,

New Mexico and home of Smokey Bear (yes, it is officially

Smokey Bear). Originally Smokey Bear was a 1944 poster

creation of artist Albert Staehle for a US Forest Service ad

campaign, “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.” Then, in 1950,

after a raging fire swept through the Capitan Mountains,

a firefighter found a young bear cub hanging on to the

remains of a burnt-out tree. He was badly burned. The

firefighters were so moved by his desperate situation, that

Firefighter Memorial SHP New Mexico they gave the cub the name “Smokey.” The news of this real
Smokey Bear spread across the country, and he soon got a

new home at the National Zoo in Washington DC. Smokey

passed in 1976 and was returned to Capitan. I visited his

gravesite there at the State Historical Park. Definitely come

by if you’re up this way. There’s a nice gift store, a beautiful

walk-through garden, and there’s even the Smokey Bear

Restaurant a couple of blocks down. Saddled up, SR48

took me back to Ruidoso, where I hung out awhile before

heading back over to Tinnie.

Early the next morning, I found myself in Roswell, NM. It was

really strange! I was in Tinnie, then – FLASH- I was in Roswell! Is

it possible??? NAW! Just because I was having breakfast at the

Carlo and Emma Lujan of Auburn, California, grew up dreaming of the life they ultimately created.

How old were you when you first got into motorcycles?

Carlo: At around the age of 10, I bought my first mini bike. It was a basket case and I paid $4 for it. It was missing the motor, I had to carry
it home about 4 blocks. I would wheel the frame and front end about 100 feet, and go back and get the rear wheel and continue this until I got

home. With a little help from Dad, I got it assembled and put a 2HP Clinton motor, direct drive, with no brakes. Later on, I added a rear brake.

That was a good idea. Around age 12, I got interested in go karts. My best buddy got one and soon I got one. Then I got into racing them, that’s

when the race bug bit. (More on that later) I was 14 when I traded a boat motor with an older friend that had a Honda 50 which was stripped down

In 1966, Carlo started working at the Honda and
Triumph shop in Pittsburg after school. The owner
was a flat track motor builder named Orville Lewis.
He taught Carlo the art of putting larger valves in
the heads and all the old school tricks, some that
he still uses today.

Emma: When I was 7 years old, my family
moved from New Mexico to Pleasant Hill. Around
the corner from my childhood home was Bill
Chaney’s Harley-Davidson. My brother, Steve
and I would walk to Mr. Chaney’s dealership.
I would put both hands on the clean glass,
and say to myself, “I’m going to own one of
those someday!” I loved all the beauty of the
motorcycles and watching the guys ride. I do
not remember seeing a girl ride. It was exciting
as an 8 year old. Upon purchasing Auburn H-D
in 1989, my brother Steve said “Hell! As kids, I
didn’t believe you were going to own the whole
damn H-D dealership!” DREAMS DO COME
TRUE.

Do you remember your first Harley?

Carlo: I still had my driver’s permit when one day
a guy I knew Dave Allen came by on a 49’ Panhead
chopper with ape hangers and a suicide clutch. He
said, “You’ve got to ride this!” I wasn’t interested
at first because it was so big and I was more
interested in dirt bikes. With a little persuasion, I
climbed on, Dave held it up and pointed to the
left pedal saying “this is the clutch and the handle
coming out of the transmission is the shifter” … and
off I went! I was instantly hooked - it was like riding
on the hood of a tractor.
