Well folks, another month has rolled by. Goes way can ride down again.

adventure. This time, it was down to the Monterey After a nice drive through Hollister, we pulled into Monterey
Peninsula, more specifically, Pacific Grove. and then made it over to Cannery Row. We wandered around
a bit and then decided to hit the Fish Hopper for a bite to eat.
The last couple of times we were down that way, we were A beautiful setting right above the beach. Cindy had the

You might remember in 1993 she was kidnapped from her

home in nearby Petaluma during a slumber party. Her body Lighthouse Lodge
was found later off 101 near Cloverdale. She was just 12
years old. Her killer is still on death row. The grandparents,
who live nearby, put up the memorial.

Our next stop along Ocean View Blvd would be the Kissing
Rock. This is a rock formation a little way off the shore that
looks like two rocks with protruding lips, kissing.

Up a bit further along is the John Denver Memorial Plaque.
It’s a metal plaque with his picture mounted to one of the
coastal rocks. In 1997, not too far offshore, he crashed his
newly purchased plane into Monterey Bay. Sadly, he did not
survive. Some of us oldies remember his big hits like Rocky
Mountain High, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Thank God
I’m a Country Boy, and Annie’s Song.

Since Lighthouse Avenue is right at the memorial, we

drove up the road a bit to the Lighthouse Lodge and Cottages

(www.lighthouselodgecottages.com) That’s where we would

spend the next couple of nights. We stayed on the Lodge

side. There are some fancier cottages right across the

street. Our room was very pleasant. Nice balcony, fireplace,

fridge, and a very comfy bed. Now settled in, it was time to

head out again. We found our way to the entrance to 17 Mile

Drive, paid the $10 entrance fee and had a great afternoon Point Pinos Lighthouse

along the coast. CONTINUED...

Wow! It had been a long while since we were Lone Cypress
through here and we kind of forgot just how Monarch Sanctuary
beautiful it is. The rocky coastline, the waves
crashing, the cool breeze and salt air - just a Talbott Motorcycle
wonderful experience. Museum

There are many, many viewpoints along the
route. Each of them with their own perspective.
Our favorite was probably the Lone Cypress scenic
overlook. It was beautiful.

On our way back, we stopped at the Monarch
Grove Butterfly Sanctuary. Pacific Grove is
called “Butterfly Town” because of the migration
of Monarch butterflies to this area. From October
through February, they migrate here because of
the perfect climate and the shelter provided by the
eucalyptus trees and Monterey pines. They need to
winter in the moderate weather that this sanctuary
provides. We didn’t see many butterflies, but were
told that, because of all the fires, it had affected
their migration patterns this year.

Back at our home away from home, we kicked
it for the evening after enjoying a fine dinner from
Max’s Grill downtown. Since we had the car, I
brought along my clubs and the next day we hit
the links in Pacific Grove. Beautiful course, very
scenic. They call it “the poor man’s Pebble Beach.”
One of the nicest things was all the deer. They
seemed to be everywhere. Even bucks, which
you don’t normally see anywhere. I always look
forward to our little golf outings. I whack the ball
around; Cindy drives the cart and drinks a beer (or
two)

There are some nice places to eat in Carmel
Valley if you so desire. There is also the Moto
Talbott Motorcycle Museum (www.mototalbott.
com) It was closed the day we were there.
Bummer! Definitely want to check it out the next
time we’re through there.

Later, we went out and previewed a future
ride. Highway 1 South will take you down to
Carmel Valley Road. This twisty, scenic road
will take you through Carmel Valley and then on
through to Greenfield on Highway 101. This road
would definitely be a lot of fun! Once you reach
Greenfield, you can take 101 up to Salinas and
SR68 back to Pacific Grove. Boring! Nothing but
flat agricultural land to Salinas and quite a bit of
traffic on 68. My recommendation would be that
when you reach the Green Bridge a few miles
outside of Greenfield, turn around and double the
fun by going back in the opposite direction!

Back at the Lodge, we lit the fire, popped a bottle
and enjoyed the rest of our stay. Really looking
forward to our return trip.

NO BULLSHIT

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 21 continued on next page

T his bike has been in the
Binford camp since it
was new. It’s undergone
changes a few times as the
trends have changed over the
years. “It started out as a bike
going to Bonneville to try to
compete in the fastest bagger
category, but that competition
went crazy real quick! It seemed
like the Bonneville bagger class
went full bore, so fast we might
end up the laughing stock of the
salt” said owner Paul Binford of
Binford’s Custom Cycles. Big
horsepower, small block with a
shot of nitrous geared to the hilt
still would be no competition for
what they were bringing to the
salt, so Binford turn this bike
into his “daily” rider and show
bike… TVs big sound system,
all the goodies! He rode it for
several years until getting taken
out by a drunk driver on a Honda
in Sturgis 2010. Paul said he is
very lucky not to have been badly
hurt or worse by a “dildie” on a
Honda that hit him from behind
going about 45 to 50 mph! After a
day or two of nursing his injuries,
some duct tape, a couple of easy
outs and a tap and die set - Paul
was still able to enjoy his Sturgis
Rally even if his feelings were a
little hurt!

As soon as returning home, the next rebirth of this bike was underway… raked out 26” flamed
out monster! Paul rock that for a few years until trends changed yet again – “previously the bike
was built for speed, even though the motors we build today are much bigger and badder than
this rowdy 95inch” Binford stated. One of the BCC slogans is “Built to Ride” and even though the
raked bagger looked cool and seems legit, at speeds over 130 mph it was doing some funny shit
and seemed like a good way to get hurt. So Paul went with the fat front tire trend, acquiring a
21x5 blank from Yaffee Designs and brought on Ali from Sinister Wheel, who also happens to cut
all of Binford‘s well-known Knuckle Gear parts. By removing all of the rake out of the front end,
Paul stated ‘it brought the old death trap back to life!”

You can see this bike roaming the streets and highways of Norcal and hopefully all of the 2021
rallies as things return to normal. It is still his #1 ride out of his corral of bad ass rides!

Make sure if there’s anything under the sun you need for your Harley, to hit Paul up at Binford’s
Custom Cycles. They do it all from basic service work, to motor builds, paint work, bars, wheel
packages and killer sound systems. Stop by anytime at 1297 N. Main Street in Manteca or hit the

Riding through the country, I noticed that it is still the
season of winter. There are no open blooms on the
trees. Many of the branches are without leaves. The
trees with leaves are not full. Fields are still brown
though green grass is starting to show up. There
are no daffodils along the roadside. We are able to
cruise comfortably along the country roads because
there is minimal traffic. While cruising along, it almost
feels nostalgic to see beautiful old barns and animals
grazing in the fields.

Stay on Old Sacramento Road and the country
fields will become the open land of vineyards and
wineries. The historic gold rush town of Plymouth
settled in 1853. The Empire Building, located on
Main Street, was the old mining company’s brick
office. It is one of the few remaining structures from
the gold rush era. Known as the Gateway to the
Shenandoah Valley, Plymouth is popular for wine
produced from the grapes grown there. Traffic along
Shenandoah Road is busy with people visiting the
wineries. They come to visit, even during winter when
the grapevines are woody and have not started to
bloom. It was cold as we rode through the tall pine
trees that lined Shenandoah Road at River Pines.
A few quick turns and we reached our destination.
Everyone ordered their lunch and enjoyed eating
outdoors, spending time visiting with each other,
sitting in the sunshine. When lunch was over, we
hopped on the bikes, and took a different route
home. It was a beautiful day for a ride with friends.
