WILD BILL’S ANNUAL

TATTOO-A-THON
This Annual Event has Raise over $276,000
For the UC Davis Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Wild Bill’s Annual Tattoo-A-Thon is held on the last Saturday in February. Artists from all over California, some beyond,
volunteer their time for this event along with Wild Bill’s talented crew. Wild Bill’s is the oldest Tattoo shop in Northern
California - located in downtown Roseville for over 48 years! The Tattoo-A-Thon’s proceeds, even the artist’s tips,
are donated to the UC Davis Children’s Hospital - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Sacramento. Thanks to the
generous and amazing tattoo artists who work from 8am until Midnight. Each year, artists express their joy by saying
they are honored to be a part of giving to such a worthy cause. Over the last 20 years, this event has raised $276,000
for the PICU at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. In 2011, Wild Bill’s was named for one of the rooms in the new PICU

unit. This was a result of the dedicated artists who have donated their time and talent during the Tattoo-A-Thon. Bill was
honored to say the least and said, “None of this would be possible without our wonderful clients, dedicated staff, and
hardworking assistants who volunteer their time and talent for the children and hospital.” Make no mistake, this is a very
long day for the volunteers who work hard and some into the wee hours of the night. Most people don’t realize just how
hard tattooing can be on your hands, eyes, and back. Last year the artists tattooed over 100 customers! We are so
thankful and appreciative for those who come out to the Tattoo-A-Thon because it doesn’t happen without them. The last
event in 2020, Roxanne and Wild Bill were able to present the UC Davis Children Hospital with a check for $25,300.00.
And it is all thanks to the efforts of the volunteers and customers who, because of them, a parent of a small child can
rest a little easier with the knowledge that their child is getting the best medical care possible. Wild Bill’s will be accepting
appointments one week prior to the event, however an appointment is not necessary, but may just get you in a little

we prefer staying there. Before we checked in though, we

still there, but in a different location.

I had also wanted to check out one of the concrete arrows
that used to belong to the US Air Mail Beacon System. The
nearest one is a little south in Enterprise, Nevada. Before
radar came into existence, pilots, during the day, used
ground-based landmarks to guide their way. But what about

nighttime or bad weather? In order to make full use of air Grand Canyon West Skywalk
flight to deliver mail, in 1924 the Postal Service came up with
the Concrete Arrow System. Hundreds of these huge 70-foot-
long arrows were laid in the ground across the U.S. They were
painted a bright yellow and were accompanied by rotating
beacon lights atop a 50-foot tower. Secondary lights flashed
out Morse Code so the pilot would know exactly what and
where the beacon was. With the advent of radar, this system
was no longer needed. There are still actually some updated
air beacons operating in the mountains of Western Montana.
You have to hike up to the enterprise arrow and since I was
having problems with my knee, I wasn’t able to check it out.
Maybe in March!

The next morning, after a delicious celebratory dinner at the Lavo Italian Restaurant, we were on our way to Grand
Canyon West. More mountains, Lake Mead, and other great scenery was enjoyed along the way. We’ve been to the North,
East and South entrances of the Canyon, but this was our first trip to the West. On this side of the Grand Canyon, you find
the half-circle overlook: Skywalk. It goes out over the gorge and has a clear glass floor. In the back of your mind, you hope
nothing lets loose. Ha! It was well worth the trip out there. Some fantastic sights along with a touch of Indian history. FYI:
It takes a couple of hours to do the loop. Buses take you from the entrance to the Skywalk, along with two other stops that
will give you some different perspectives. So, plan for some bus stop time.

Our next landing would be Laughlin, Nevada. Cindy’s niece, Jill, enjoys some table time at the casinos, and gets room
comps along with other perks. She hooked us up at the Avi Resort for a couple of nights. We had a beautiful room that
overlooked the pool and private beach. As usual, it was fun spending time with some of the family. We met for dinner at the
Prime Rib Room at the Riverside and enjoyed free tickets to see Hall and Oates. (Thanks Jill!)

On the road again, we headed to our final destination, Phoenix, Arizona to our annual baseball tournament that incidentally
did not go that well; but had a great time playing some ball and hanging out with friends. There’s always next year. Later Folks!

wonderful family experience. Or, as I did recently, just jumped

quiet time in respectful reflection.

Estrella Warbird Museum is a ‘must see’ for any aviation

are so inclined, fly into the airport and secure parking for your

something for all ages, and the experience promises to instill
a reminder of the sacrifices of those who have come before
