Just what is the true meaning of this day and do we collectively understand it? Independence Day? I mean REALLY understand it. For me, it made me think about what our founding fathers would be like if I could meet one of them today. I wonder would they be impressed with our progress as a society? I am not trying to go all political on you here, but this day does have a meaning and we all need to reflect on where we came from and just how it is that we are fortunate enough to live in this great country. Maybe we need to be a bit harder on our elected officials. If they ‘think’ they need more of our hard earned money, then we should demand that they are individually held accountable for how and where it is used. We also need to think long and hard about anyone who suggests that we give up more of our freedoms. This is a slippery slope that many other societies have gone down with disastrous results. Let’s all collectively strive to stay independent, so our children and grandchildren’s children that follow us do not have to live under the oppression that our ancestors fled to find a free life here in America. I have ‘RIDE FREE’ tattooed on my forearm. It means a lot to me and I am reminded of that every morning when I brush my teeth it is right there in the mirror requiring me to reflect daily. Thank you to all who have served and are currently serving our country, without you this conversation would not be possible. Have a safe and happy 4th of July! Now let’s all have a toast to our freedom! RIDE FREE RIDE OFTEN Stan & Terri Hill Owners/Editors Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 2

T he only thing consistent in our lives is change. No matter who you are, what you do, or where you will experience change, the plans you set for yourself will most likely change. The neighborhood you live in will change, your boss will change, your marriage will change, your body will change, and more than likely, your friendships will change. Change is not a bad thing, but unless we know how to handle change, it could be detrimental to your future. I thought for sure I would be a Teamster for my entire life, once I joined the brotherhood. Due to an injury, I had to change companies and professions to be able to provide for my family. I could have sulked and blamed the world or worse blame God for my circumstances and having to start over, but in hindsight, it was the BEST thing that could have happened to me. I was forced to learn new skills and adapt into an entirely new industry. Instead of sulking, I adapted and joined the million-dollar sales club during my second year. Sometimes, we don’t understand why we get put into circumstances that require change, but realize you are not the only one. The key is to be prepared for changes to take place in your life. You may be forced to move, close a business, or leave a job. Talk about change, when I decided I was going to make a stand for sobriety, everything changed in my life. I lost friends, I lost loved ones, I changed jobs, and changed my residence. BUT, as I lost acquaintances that I thought were my friends, they were replaced with loyal people that had my best interest in mind. When I lost loved ones, God replaced them with a partner that I’ve been sharing life with for over 35 years. My career was replaced, and I am exactly where God wants me to be. But even as I write this article, I am sure there will be more changes coming in the future. We make plans, but they are futile unless they are in line with God’s purpose. I launched Thunder Road Church in 2010 and had a phenomenal run with helping some amazing folks find a deeper relationship with God. We baptized over 25 people who are now solidified in God’s book. We did yearly outreach projects, supporting almost every Motorcycle Ministry in the greater Sacramento area. We supported HOG groups, Motorcycle Clubs with weddings, funerals, and countless nights of prayer. We set up booths at Harley Drag Races, Toys For Tots Christmas events, made amazing chili at the Grass Valley Toy Run, cooked hot dogs, and gave out bibles at many Harley Dealerships. The impact we had bringing people together was phenomenal to say the least. We changed locations multiple times and had many church leaders we reached out to for help, ending up in Roseville before everything fell away in 2021 after the Covid crisis. We held on for a while with Facebook church, but the technology became too monotonous for one. Then things changed. After many months of being away and in prayer, the Lord has led us to a new location, and we have been blessed by an old friend who took over an old restaurant/bar in Orangevale we call, “The Mansion”. 35 plus years ago, I raised total havoc in this location when it was a bar and was thrown out multiple times. God has brought me full circle to have the ability to use The Mansion on Thursday nights again, reaching the lost, the lonely, and brokenhearted. We relaunched on May 2nd 2024 and it felt so good to be led to a new location with tremendous opportunities. The Orangevale community has always been a small community with its own share of chaos, havoc, crime, drugs, and destitution. It also has a long list of some amazing residents, groups, organizations, and companies that call Orangevale home. To tell you the truth, when I received a phone call from the lead Pastor to come check out the building, I was reluctant. I figure the season had past for me to preach and lead a crazy church again, but the moment I walked into the building, it felt like home. It felt like the place we had been looking for all along. It was also refreshing to speak to the lead Pastor and hear him not say too much besides, “here are the keys” and “it’s yours on Thursday nights”. I have consulted and ministered with Michael Bagget for the past 10-12 years. He knew I was not your everyday Pastor, and that the people we reach on Thursday nights do look like or act like the average Sunday church folks. If you have been looking for a place to hang out and reconnect with God and many folks that are just like you, swing on in any Thursday night at 7pm. We promise to be fun, real, and accepting. We speak the truth and are respectful with where you are in your walk and life. Hope to see you soon – Reach out anytime! Check us out LIVE on the Thunder At The Mansion FACEBOOK page. RIDE DESTINATION Early Spring Desert Ride For this month’s ride we’ll be heading back through Death Valley again on our way to a final destination of Beatty, Nevada. My brother Mark, his wife Debbie, and a couple dozen friends do an annual early spring ride out into the desert. Definitely the time to plan it, before the real heat sets in. An added bonus would be that Cindy would be riding with me. She’s been limited to shorter rides for a while since her surgery. But she was now ready to give this longer trip a shot. Yay! After the typical no frills trek down 99, we crashed in Bakersfield before heading up SR178 the next morning. The West side of SR178 runs alongside the Kern River. It’s a beautiful twisty climb up to Lake Isabella. That river, though, is one of the most dangerous rivers in the U.S. There’s a sign as you enter designating the number of deaths on the river since 1968. It currently stands at 325. We hooked up with my brother and were soon headed down the East side of the mountain on that same 178. A heavy wind was at our backs until we reached SR14. Making a left, we encountered a side wind like you wouldn’t believe. The bikes were practically at a 45-degree angle. Luckily, it lasted only a few miles as 178 then continued East. Whew! Riders were coming in from different directions, so we were going to try and all hook up in either Ridgecrest or Trona. After gassing up in Trona, we stopped for lunch at the Panamint Springs Restaurant in Darwin. We hadn’t stopped there before but found that it was a pretty nice place. Good food, cozy bar and a great mountain view out on the patio. We were fortunate though, as a tour bus of about 40 people were just finishing up and getting ready to leave. In the late afternoon, we pulled into the Stagecoach Hotel and Casino (www.stagecoachhotelandcasino.com.) Hello again, Beatty! Riders were milling around as a large section of the parking lot was filled with bikes. Everyone checked in and most just hung out for a while before heading off to their evening plans. Later, as usual, we walked over to Eddie’s World for some munchies and called it a day. A couple of hours later, the Loseth Clan rode out to Furnace Creek. A great little day ride it was. We checked out the area, including the resort. I also wanted to look into the golf course there. A golf course in Death Valley!? Sure enough, it’s actually very nice. And it happens to be the lowest elevation golf course in the world. 214 feet below sea level. We found out later that there are underground springs that not only supply the resort’s pools, but also the golf course. Kind of amazing. We decided to stay for lunch and went over to the Wild Rose Tavern. The proverbial 19th hole. Our midday meal over, we had a couple of drinks or so out on the veranda. We really enjoyed kicking it, laughing at old times, all the while taking in the view of the course with the mountains as a beautiful backdrop. Nice! We made it back to Beatty in time to walk down to Smokin’ J’s BBQ. It just happened to be Thomas Sr’s birthday, so we Death Valley Intl Car Forest Goldfield Nevada The Clan Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 8
had to have a little party, right? The BBQ was very good, and everyone had a good time just hanging out and yakking it up. After the get together. We wandered over to the Exchange Club Casino. There was a fire several years ago, and it’s now being rebuilt. The steel ornamental look is pretty unique. Welded and flame cut artifacts are the dominant features on the exterior. Also, there are a couple of large posters on the outside walls. If you look at them with the naked eye, you really couldn’t see what was there. Take a picture though, and the faces show up. Amazing! The next day, a group of us decided to do another day ride up to Goldfield. Most of the pack had gone up there the day before. In the early 20th century, Goldfield was the largest city in Nevada. Gold had been discovered and the city became a boomtown. By 1940, 86 million (contemporary value) in gold had been removed from the mines. Also, during the same period, Nevada’s boxing history fired up in Goldfield. In 1906 a Lightweight Championship fight took place. It was Joe Gans vs. Oscar Nelson. The temperature was in the 90’s, yet the two fighters went an incredible 42 rounds before Gans was declared the winner when Nelson was disqualified for a low blow. This was the longest fight in modern boxing history. There is a plaque on Main St. commemorating the event. We were looking for a bite to eat and maybe a thirst quencher, so we pulled up to the historic Santa Fe Saloon. Built in 1905, it’s the oldest remaining business in Goldfield. A classic hole-inthe-wall Saloon which kind of brings you back to that era of the Old West. And, if you’ve had one too many, you can sleep it off at the Sante Fe Motel next door. Another really interesting place you can visit in Goldfield is the International Car Forest of the Last Church (www. internationalcarforestofthelastchurch.com) It’s the largest open-air car exhibit in the U.S. There are over 40 graffiti-laden vehicles buried nose down in the dirt, hence the car forest. If you’re on a street bike, the road out to the exhibits is a little rough. You can make it out to the first bus without too much trouble, although after that, be careful, or just hoof it. On our last day, we just hung out at the Hotel and relaxed. A vacation day. Ha! We took the shorter route home going North through Tonopah and Reno. Upon reaching Tonopah, a visit to the World Famous Clown Motel was a must. (Cindy says, ‘no way in Hades I’m ever staying overnight there’!) Billed at the scariest motel in America, there are 31 rooms, each with a different clown motif. (www.theclownmotelusa.com) From funny, friendly clowns, to the scary Bloody Lane clowns. It’s of no concern, I’m sure, that the motel is conveniently located right next door to the cemetery. Well, we all had a fine time on this Spring trip to Beatty and will look forward to making it again next year. If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley On the road again, we go down the Highway Clear Lake State Route 20 is a California State Highway in the northern central region of California, which runs east west north of Sacramento, from the North Coast to Sierra Nevada. Overall, the pavement is smooth with some wide sweeping curves that will take you between golden hills and beside the vast blue water of Clear Lake. Some motorcycle riders might have difficulty explaining the thrill but they all understand the freedom they feel when riding. Sitting with the bike between your legs, twist the throttle and feel the power of speed. Leaning with the bike, hearing the roar of loud pipes and the hum of the tires rolling on the road, the rider is one with the bike. It’s the wind in your face, getting wet in the rain, sweating in the hot sun, accepting the aroma of a skunk and knowing you will be through it all quickly. Senses heightened, adrenaline pumping, the excitement of going where you have not gone before. You are part of the elements that surround you. The feeling is all this and the sites you see. Different almost every day, every ride. Eight bikes, two are two up, ten riders, gone riding for the day. Leaving town, the railroad tracks are on our left side. Tall golden stalks of hay are growing beside the track. The train is long. Varied styles of colorful graffiti adorns many of its cars. The Engineer blasts his horn, acknowledging us, as we quickly pass each other traveling in opposite directions. Soon we are in Colusa on Highway 20 looking at the Sutter Buttes. This circular shaped remnant of eroded volcanic lava domes has been dormant for over a million years. Easily recognized by three peaks, north, south and west. Presumed to be the shortest mountain range in the United States, the Buttes is 10 miles in diameter with an area of 75 square miles. The flat land of the surrounding valley is lush green with local grown crops. Every once in a while, I see roadside memorials and shrines dedicated to loved ones who have passed. As we were traveling through the golden hills of Williams near Salt Creek, still on Hwy 20, there was a well-maintained shrine sitting in the field, off the road. A small white rosary is laying over a beautiful iron cross that is standing in a cement pedestal. Cursive letters appear to be hand cut, forming a sign that bears a name. Another cross, flowers and a candle, lovingly placed at the base. This memorial touched my emotions. I crossed myself and said a prayer asking our Lord and His angels to watch over the heartbroken family. Just outside Clear Lake, in Clearlake Oaks, we can see the charred remains of rolling hills burned by the Henderson Fire in June 2023. The wildfire threatened structures and power lines, lasting for two days. Cal Fire reported they stopped the forward rate of the fire with sixty firefighters, one helicopter, fifteen engines, one dozer, three water tenders and crews. Devastating 25 acres, this was one of the smaller fires in the area. Looking in the rear view mirror, oak trees on one side and those charred hills behind us. I took a picture of the bikes, the seven others and part of ours. What I notice, is that he is always there. Our best friend, Rick Wheeler, riding Shotgun, beside Curt and me, a few seconds behind. In fact, long ago, Shotgun became his riding name. Just like that, we felt the temperature change with a cool breeze from the water coming off the lake. Clear Lake is the oldest lake in North America. Core samples of the lake’s sediment reveal the lake is at least 480,000 years old. Sitting Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12
on a huge block of stone that slowly tilts north at the same rate the lake fills with sediment, the water remains the same depth. At one time Blue Lakes was part of Clear Lake, making it even larger than it is now. Volcanic eruptions and landslides changed the landscape, separating the water and dividing into two different lakes. With a surface area of 68 square miles, Clear Lake is still the largest natural freshwater lake in California. Evidence found in the Clear Lake basin indicates Native Americans have occupied the area for at least 11,000 years. European settlers began arriving around 1845. They abused and exploited the Natives, including enslaving them. The Natives lived in poverty after the federal government forced them to live on small plots of reservation land. Satisfaction sometimes comes late and usually feels very sweet. The fastest growing businesses in Lake County today are the casinos operated by descendants of generations of the local Natives who were here before them. After riding around the lake, before heading home, we stopped for a break at a local coffee shop. If you are looking for a nice ride with interesting sights, check out SR CA Highway 20. Riding season is here. I hope you take advantage of the opportunity to ride and have fun. RIDE PRIDE Here’s another Nor-Cal rider built by Nor-Cal’s finest BINFORD’S CUSTOM CYCLES! Joel Sakamoto brought in his 2003 Roadglide for a simple facelift. Joel did his homework and made the journey to Manteca from Morgan Hill to sit down with the customizer Harley veteran - Paul Binford! Joel wanted a little more horse power and something that when he made his first trip to Sturgis the patrons would say Hey! Whoa! Joel said ‘I know it’s a 2003 Roadglide, but I own it and instead of buying new - let’s trick out this ol’ skool twin cam beauty’ The two put their heads together and BOOM! Long lean street machine was born. Binford’s built one of their nasty 100 inch power plants... rockin Woods cams, Darkhorse lowers topped with some massaged heads from BC Gerolomy… making 127tq and 126hp. Then came the JUICY ass end kit from Speed by Design, Legend Air ride and the gorgeous P/M wheels! And for you sound guys, you should hear the amazing JL/Hertz system that Binford’s rocked in it...So many details of a Binford build it’s scary! Binford’s don’t miss too many deadlines, but this build got a little carried away and one got by them. Paul said he can point fingers at the peeps he relies on in the business to get stuff completed - but what’s the point? Paul said he’s turning a new leaf on being a little more laid back and not so go-go- go, if anyone knows what that means. But for hitting 25 years in the Harley business this last April - Paul said it’s time to cruise and not get so excited! Keep an eye out for his latest builds on his Facebook, Instagram and Tik-Tok pages. And Save The Date…September 21st, 2024 for his 25 year Anniversary Big Ass Bash and Bike Show. DON’T MISS IT!! A Mother, who is always prideful that she gives her children honest answers, so that they’re better equipped to deal with whatever life throws their way, was sitting in her daughter’s bedroom and brushing her little darling’s long, beautiful hair, when the daughter asked, “Mommy, tell me the story again about how I was born?” The Mother smiled and replied, “Once upon a time, me and your Daddy decided to plant a wonderful little seed. Daddy put it in the Earth and I took care of it every single day. After a while the seed started to grow more and more leaves and in a few months it turned into a beautiful and healthy plant. So we took the plant, dried it, smoked it and got so high that we forgot to wear a condom. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hubby and me have an understanding, after shacking up for 10 years before getting hitched, there is no such thing as “divorce’. He told the hippie he’d have to sleep in the same bed with his 18 year old daughter but if he tried any messing around then “I will shoot you in the morning!” Of course the Farmer was woke up by the sounds of his daughter and the hippie going at it like 2 squirrels scrumpin’ in a tree. In the morning he told the hippie to come on outside and then he raised his shotgun and said, “I told you up front what I was gonna’ do if you messed around with my daughter. Is there anything you’d like to say before I shoot you?” The hippie knew that the Farmer probably heard them so he said, “Yes sir, I did and I beg your forgiveness.” The Farmer said, “well, ya’ aint a-gettin’ no forgiveness, so do ya’ have any last words, bub?” The Swiss hippie was scared stoopid so he yells out, “Yodelayheehoo!!” The Farmer shot him dead. When the Sheriff showed up he asked the Farmer, “Vern, why in tarnation world did you shoot a man for having sex with your daughter, dang, all of this county and half of the one next door, has had sex with her. Vern shook his head and looked at the Sheriff and with sad eyes and tears welling up and said, “I really didn’t have a problem with him screwin’ around, I was just funnin’ with him and puttin’ a scare into him, but when he yelled out real loud and said “Yer’ ol lady too!”, that’s when I blew his dang head off. Blog by Sheldon Sherman for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys BRITTANY MORROW AND HER LIFE-CHANGING STORY Brittany Morrow, who was involved in a bad motorcycle accident in 2005, has used the accident to inspire riders worldwide to seek out more training and always wear proper gear. Brittany was a passenger on a motorcycle when the driver of the motorcycle accelerated to 120 MPH. The bike was going so fast that it caused her face shield to lift on her helmet. The wind ripped Brittany from the motorcycle and forced her to slide on the asphalt for over 500 feet. Brittany had significant injuries, including severe road rash covering 50% of her body and causing mental health issues. The motorcycle accident was 16 years ago, and she still deals with psychological and physical problems. To know more about Brittany Morrow’s motorcycle accident, you can visit her website at www.brittanymorrow.com. RBMA: How old were you when you first started riding a motorcycle? Brittany: At five years old, I rode on a motorcycle with my uncle. The ride was just down the road and back, but it was my first introduction to the motorcycle world. The next time I rode on a motorcycle was at seven years old. I went for an actual ride outside the neighborhood. I did not start riding my own bike until 2006, when I was 21 years old. RBMA: What was your first motorcycle? Brittany: My first motorcycle was a 2006 Yamaha R6S. RBMA: Why did you decide to start riding a motorcycle? Brittany: I loved being a passenger on a bike until I was involved in a motorcycle accident while a passenger. After I recovered from my injuries, I decided to continue to ride, but I wanted to be in control of the bike and be the driver instead of the passenger. RBMA: What kind of motorcycle training have you done? Brittany: I have done hundreds if not thousands of hours of training. Here is a list of most of the training that I have done over the last 16 years: In 2006, I learned to ride on the race track and later took the MSF Beginner Rider Course. After I got my motorcycle license, I continued to attend track days and searched for courses and guidance from expert riders. In 2009, I became an MSF Rider Coach and taught the introductory riding course for several years. In the summer of 2012, I interned with Lee Parks and learned from Lee about having total control of my motorcycle. I also took a beginner dirt bike class during that summer. In the fall and winter of 2012, I became certified to teach the MSF Basic Rider Course 2, Advanced Rider Course, and military sport bike rider course. I taught these classes while a Navy contractor for several years. In 2013, I took Kevin Schawntz’s two-day track training in Texas. In 2015, I became a professional representative for a gear manufacturer and took professional training on all aspects of safety apparel from multiple sources. In 2016, I traveled to New Zealand and took the Ride Forever on-track Gold Level training course. When I returned from New Zealand, I became a total control instructor and taught the introductory riding course for several years. In 2017, I took an intermediate dirt bike training course and Moto gymkhana class. In 2018, I took Reg Pridmore’s class on-track training and took a new racer school with SMRI, where I earned my race license. In 2019, I returned to New Zealand and took the Ride Forever on-street gold level course and an MSF 3-wheel rider course. In 2022, I became certified to teach the MSF 3-Wheel Rider Course. RBMA: Why did you become a motorcycle riding instructor? Brittany: I wanted to help riders learn the “easy way” and be an example for new riders to follow. The easy way meant not getting hurt or reducing the chances of getting hurt and learning the basics of riding a motorcycle properly. RBMA: What other motorcycle-related stuff are you involved in or were involved in? Brittany: Since 2007, I have attended, volunteered with, coordinated, and have been the National Director of the Women’s Sportbike Rally . Also in 2007, I was a guest speaker during special events for multiple branches of the United States Military, Dealernews Dealer Expo, WRN’s Revved-Up Women, America’s Moto Rally, New Zealand Transportation Safety Administration and ACC’s Shiny Side up, SMSA, WMT’s Women’s Motorcycle Conference, Women Riders World Relay and International Motorcycle Shows. In 2008, I started an international protective equipment awareness campaign called Rock the Gear. In 2014, I competed on an all-women team in a 24-hour mini-moto endurance race. In 2017, I won the expert division of America’s Moto Rally with my teammate, Michelle. In 2019, I competed in another 24- hour mini-motor endurance race on an all-women team. In 2021, I co-founded Revvoultion Rally with two of my best friends and fellow Women’s Sportbike Rally volunteers. I have also volunteered at multiple Real Deal Revolution events. I was featured on the cover of Dealernews magazine and American Motorcyclist Magazine. I have been featured in BikeRider NZ Magazine, Backroads Magazine, Super Streetbike Magazine, and many other regional publications. I was featured on revzilla.com, motolady.com, webbikeworld.com, rideapart.com, forbes.com, and many other motorsport-focused websites. I have worked directly with Yamaha, Can-Am, Indian, and Kawasaki on product launches, long-term test rides, takeovers, demo rides, and special events. I worked for Icon Motorsports as a brand specialist for over two years, where I visited around 500 motorcycle dealerships across the United States and Canada. I worked at special events like AMA Supercross, AMA Outdoor Nationals, and MotoGP. I have been a guest on several podcasts, including the Wheelnerds, Moterrific, Coast 2 Coast, Tales from a Gemini, and Arrive Alive. I co-built several motorcycles that have competed in and been featured at the Women’s Motorcycle Show and Sturgis Buffalo Chip Women’s Build Competition. In 2021, my motorcycle build won the Jesse Combs Foundation Best in Show Award at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.
