“When we work to create light for others, we naturally light our own way.” (Mary A Radmacher) Self-centeredness comes natural to most people. On the contrary, going out of your way to help others can be inconvenient receiving nothing in return but a thank you. On the other hand, selflessness is a character trait one can adapt and learn to grow. Although there is usually no monetary reward that comes with volunteering or serving others, the real reward is what it does for you internally. All of us have had to ask for help at one time or another and the joy comes when we are able to pay back our blessings by helping and serving others. We all have something to give. It could be our talent, our time, or it could be some of our treasures. One is not greater than the other and if able we should all find a way to create light for others. For some, it is using their talents to serve others. It could be doing mechanical work for a single mom, taking your neighbors garbage out when it is raining, or mowing their lawn while you are doing yours. It could be playing music at a convalescent home, or teaching illiterate people how to read. We all have a special talent of some kind that could shine a light inside others. For others, they may have extra time they can give to a charity. There are hundreds of opportunities to serve with your time. Food banks, gospel missions, homeless outreach, SPCA, Salvation Army, or local clean-ups are just some of the places one can give of their time. Most of the time it does not take huge commitments and simply giving a couple of hours a week can be a huge gift for someone. For others, they have done well in business, and the Lord has blessed them with the ability to create wealth. Sometimes these folks are super busy running their businesses or enterprises and don’t have the time or the talent to give, but they still can give financially. There are thousands of nonprofits and charities that would be grateful for even a small donation or monthly partner. Find something that moves your heart and give. Give either your talent, your time, or your treasure. We all want to see change in the world, but how many of us are waiting for the other person to do it while we complain about the plight of the world? It is time to stop complaining and start participating in the process. It’s time to recharge your batteries so you can start creating light for others. I promise you, when you shine your light for others, your own path will start looking brighter than ever. Jesus tells a story of a man who was walking down a sidewalk. Apparently, he went to the wrong neighborhood and got rolled. Thugs stripped him and took his clothes. They beat and bruised him severely and they left him on the side of the road half dead. A brief time later a priest came walking down the street and seeing the man, crossed to the other side of the street so he did not have to stop and help the man. Likewise, not long after a Levite came down the same street and again crossed to the other side of the street so he would not have to help the man. Obviously, they were consumed with self-righteousness as their own lights must have been out of batteries. The story continues with a Samaritan walking shortly after the priest and Levite. When he sees the man, he was consumed with compassion. Maybe he had a similar story? Either way, he stooped and helped the man. He bandaged his wounds, put him on his mule, took him to a hotel and cared for him. The next day before he parted, he gave money to the hotel to cover the costs. He also told the hotel manager to care for the man and whatever it costs, he would pay on his return. The question Jesus asks is which of the three do you identify with? You see, it is not your status, education or financial portfolio that makes the difference. It is how bright your light shines for others. Be the blessing and the light others are looking for. Luke 10:37 And He said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to them, “Go and do likewise.” (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan Thunder Road Church (916) 521-5706 / Johnny@ thunderroadchurch.com / www.thunderroadchurch.com Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 6

RIDE DESTINATION Mill Valley - Panoramic Highway - Mount Tamalpais From Our Room Acqua Hotel Genevieve and Valerie W ith all the bad weather and rain on top of other commitments, we weren’t able to get in a decent ride last month, so we have reprinted our trip of March 2017 I sure hope Punxsutawney Phil was wrong about this six more weeks’ thing. Enough already! The drought is over. Do we have to break out in the Hippie chant “no rain, no rain, no rain!” Wait a minute...that didn’t work out so well for them at Woodstock, did it? Like last month, the dry days were few and far between. Though we did manage to sneak away for a couple of days. Since those couple of days happened to be the weekend of the Sweetheart Run, we decided to stay close and head over to the coast. It had been a while since we’d been to the Stinson/Muir Beach area, so it was on to I80, across the Richmond Bridge and a short cruise later, into Mill Valley. Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 8

North Muir Overlook C E Auburn Sweetheart Run 2017 On Muir Woods Rd Mill Valley South Muir Overlook We’d be staying the night at the Acqua Hotel (www. acquahotel.com) Fairly reasonable considering it’s Marin County. Nice place though. Right on the waterfront of Richardson Bay with a great view of Mount Tamalpais. Some very nice rooms go with the view. The hotel also has a couple of cool people at the front desk. Genevieve and Valerie were friendly and very helpful. Real nice folks. Also, you’ll find the Acqua has one of the best breakfast buffets around. After checking in and stowing our gear, we headed out for lunch in Stinson Beach. We cruised through town on Hwy 1 before catching the Panoramic Highway and turning North. We made a left at Muir Woods Rd and enjoyed this twisty road as it cuts through the Muir Woods National Monument. The monument is named after John Muir, a naturalist who helped to establish our National Park System. It’s been part of this park system since 1908. Muir Woods Rd ends at Shoreline Highway (Highway 1) There we headed north to Stinson Beach. What a fine scenic stretch of road this is. Reminds you a bit of the area up near Jenner. Don’t miss the Muir Beach CONTINUED... Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 9

Stinson Beach Overlook. Some outstanding views up and down the coast. This spot actually was a coast watcher station during WWII. Making it into Stinson, we rode over to the beach and the Siren Canteen. It looks like an old lifeguard tower that has been converted into a restaurant. It’s right on the beach and offers some good lunch faire. Tacos, burgers, salads and more. Later on, it was time to check things out. So we did a little hike, some shopping and some just hanging about. Since it’s not too far and such a beautiful ride, we made our way back to Muir Beach to see what we could find. Time was getting short, so we decided to have a fairly early dinner at the Pelican Inn (www.pelicaninn.com) This is one of the nicer British Tavern/Inns you’ll find anywhere. Named after Sir Francis Drake’s flagship, “The Pelican” (although he renamed it The Golden Hinde” during his circumnavigation of the world. In 1579, Drake landed on the Marin Coast and claimed California for Britain. He named this land “Nova Albion” or New Albion. Albion is an archaic name for Britain. He didn’t actually land at Muir Beach, but up the coast a bit, at what is now Drake’s Bay near Point Reyes. But back to the Pelican Inn, the lunch menu is standard British, fish and chips, Shepherd’s pie, etc. An expanded menu is served for dinner and is excellent. Cindy had a very good beet and goat cheese salad, and I had the Shepherd’s pie. Although I would probably tilt to a Cottage pie (ground beef), rather than Shepherd’s pie (ground lamb) This pie was one of the best lamb offerings I’ve had yet. Also, if you have a special occasion coming up with your better half, they have seven warm cozy rooms available for you. Samuel Johnson said it best…‘As soon as I enter the door of a tavern, I experience oblivion of care, and a freedom from solicitude. There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn.’ So, after a fine meal, we made our way back to Stinson and the Panoramic Highway. This time we would be riding through the Mt Tamalpais State Park. This was a perfect way to end our day in the saddle. A fine road that twists and turns its way up through the ancient redwoods. We definitely had a good day out there on the coast. Next morning, we hit the road fairly early and putted on into C & E Auburn a half hour or so before “kickstands up.” It was another beautiful day for their 37th Annual Sweetheart Run. Carlo and Emma have kept this run one of the best events of the year, and the turnout proved just that. Congrats! By the way, a well-deserved tip of hat to the Gold Country Harley Riders for all the time and effort that they put in to make this event such a success. Later! WE WANT YOUR BIKE! TRADE IN OR CASH OUT!

If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley The Treasure is Downieville Tahoe National Forest Sweeping Curve beside river 19th Century Wells Fargo Express Sometimes when you like something a lot, it becomes common to you. Just maybe, that is the reason I have not shared the town of Downieville in my stories. Whatever the reason, I want you to know this quaint little town is special. We usually visit three or four times a year. Downieville is a place that makes you want to go back and see more. Encourage friends to take a ride or just get on your bike and go north. Only two hours from Sacramento, getting there is a fun ride. Take CA-49-N until you reach Commercial Street in Downieville. With its exhilarating twists and turns, riding the old state route highway is an adventure. There are tight turns beside tall hills with large rocks exposed due to soil erosion. You want to look up when you should Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

Entering Downieville Historic Durgan Bridge Exposed Rocks Jersey Bridge CONTINUED... not. Around any curve could be a drop off with no guardrail, requiring the riders’ full attention. There are stretches of open fields, sometimes home to a late 19th century wooden building still trying hard to remain standing. Breathe deeply and enjoy aroma from the tall Ponderosa and Sugar Pine trees in the Tahoe National Forest. The elevation climbs and the temperature usually goes lower. Be sure you packed an extra layer of clothing. CA-49-N is known as the Golden Chain Highway because passes through many California 1849 gold rush mining towns. These towns are where miners sought the elusive gold nuggets that only a few found. More often, people settled here and found riches in the life they lived. My own family heritage ties back to this land and era, not as gold rush miners but as hard working town blacksmiths. Sierra Thunder HOG in Downieville Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 17

Once a little mining community, originally known as The Forks, it’s easily recognized because of the confluence where the Downie River meets the North Fork of the Yuba River. Gold was discovered here on Sept 14, 1849. William Downie led an expedition of nine miners to the area. They built a log cabin to stay and wait out the winter in November 1849. They were the first known settlers in The Forks. Word spread. People came. They founded the town and named it after one of the first settlers. More than 5,000 people lived there in 1851. They built bridges to span the rivers and develop the flat land. Over time, fires and floods took out the bridges and many homes. Needing to replace the lost infrastructure, in 1938 two bridges were built. Considered historical today, they are the main bridges used by vehicle traffic. The Jersey Bridge is a truss span bridge that crosses the Downie River. We rode our motorcycles single file across this one lane 220-foot long span. The Durgan Bridge crosses over the North Fork of the Yuba River. Constructed of riveted steel I-beams, this through truss bridge is 140 long. The first time we walked over the Durgan Bridge we did not know we would find treasures on the other side. Remnants of days gone by are here, well maintained and protected. First, on our right is a colorful unique and long fence, constructed of old used snow skis. Tucked back in a corner we came upon the Sierra County Superior Court House. An attractive building with a veranda style covered front porch. I walked up eight concrete steps to reach the entrance doors. There are two cannons, one on each side of the doors. A descriptive plaque explains the cannons. They are Mountain Howitzer’s; short barreled large caliber cannons designed to be a mobile weapon, taken apart and transported on a pack animal. The mobility made them great assets in rough country, throwing shells at a higher trajectory compared to regular field guns. Also on display in front of the Court House, there is an original ore cart sitting on a rail track, used during the gold rush era to transport precious metals out of the mines. Moving on, we discovered a replica of an old vault built in 1854. The plaque at this site, placed in 1954, states this is the only remaining parts of the old courthouse that was destroyed by fire. The rocks, bricks and doors used to build the replica are from the original vault. Even more interesting, standing tall at the side of a hill is the original Sierra County Sheriff Gallows. This is the only authentic standing gallows in California. Built in 1855, a marker placed in 1933 states the gallows was erected in 1857. The marker also states the last execution was Vault reconstructed Old Skis Fence Lunch on the Patio Fishing in the River Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 18

EVENT Sierra County Sheriff’s Gallows on Friday, November 27, 1885, by Sheriff Sam Stewart. We stood under the trap door, which is actually part of the floor that opens under the feet, releasing and hanging the condemned person. After sightseeing, we stopped for lunch at the local café. They took care of our group, serving good food as we filled all of their tables and the back patio. We sat out back, listening to the water flowing by as we watched someone fishing. The water was so clear we could see their shimmering colors as the fish swam among the rocks below. While waiting for some to finish their lunch we walked over to the Lions Park and investigated the rusting collection of old mining equipment on display. Across the street is the Downieville Veterans Memorial. Multiple markers honor local veterans. One is dedicated to the many American soldiers who have loyally served in the armed forces of the United States of America. Today Downieville is a popular hiking and mountain biking destination in its natural setting along the Yuba River. Elevation is 2966’; the annual average is 115’ of snow and 240 days with sunshine. The current population keeps dwindling with only 105 residents listed in the 2024 population count. There is much more to see. Pick a nice day, go for a ride and enjoy this beautiful California frontier town. Article and photos contributed by Cyndee Reed Van Hooser Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 19

“Late again?” the 5th grade Teacher asked of her most challenging student, Lil’ Joey. “It ain’t my fault this time, Miss Crabtree. You can blame this’un on my Daddy. The reason I’m three hours late is my Daddy sleeps naked! Now, Miss Crabtree had taught grammar school for thirty-someodd years. Despite her better judgment, she asked Lil’ Joey what he meant by that statement? Full of grins and mischief, and in the flower of his youth, Lil’ Joey and trouble were old friends, but he always told the truth. ”You see, Miss Crabtree, out at the ranch we got this here low down coyote. The last few nights, he done ate six hens and killed Ma’s best milk goat. Last night, when Daddy heard a noise out in the chicken pen, he grabbed his shot gun and said to Ma, “That coyote’s back again, I’m a gonna git him!’’ “Stay back, he whispered to all us kids!” “He was naked as a jaybird, no boots, no pants, no undies, no shirt! To the hen house he crawled on his belly, just like a burglar on the snoop. Then, he stuck that double barreled 12 gauge shotgun through the window of the coop.” “As he stared into the darkness, with coyotes on his mind, our old hound dog, Zeke, had done woke up and comes sneakin’ up behind Daddy. Then, as we all looked on, plumb helpless, old Zeke stuck his cold nose in Daddy’s crack!” “Miss Crabtree, we all been cleanin’ up chicken parts since three o’clock this mornin’!!”. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Text from wife: where are u Me: kitchen Wife: can u feed the cat M: I meant garage W: bring in laundry M: bathroom W: clean toilet M: Idaho W: get potatoes --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A man came home from work one day to find his wife on the front porch with her bags packed. ‘Just where the heck do you think you’re going!’, said the man. ‘I’m going to Las Vegas’, said the wife, ‘I just found out I can get $400 a night for what I give you for free! I’ve had sex with Pussie Green twice a week for the past two months.” This time, the Priest questioned, “Who is this Pussie Green?” “A new woman in the neighborhood,” the sinner replied. “Very well,” sighed the Priest, “go and say ten Hail Mary’s.” At mass the next Christmas morning, as the Priest prepared to deliver the sermon, a tall, voluptuous, drop-dead gorgeous redheaded woman entered the sanctuary. The eyes of every man in the church fell upon her as she slowly sashayed up the aisle and sat down right in front the Priest. Her dress was bright green and very short, and she wore matching and super shiny emerald green shoes. The Priest and the altar boy gasped as the woman in the green dress and matching green shoes, whom sat with her legs spread slightly apart, but just enough to realize she wasn’t wearing any underwear. The Priest whispered out the side of his mouth to the alter boy, “Is that Pussie Green then?” The alter boy replied with all honesty, “No! Blog by Olivia Goheen for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys I f you have been around motorcycles long enough, you probably have heard of Leticia Cline. The blonde beauty is a renowned motorcycle enthusiast and a seasoned traveler, embracing an authentic free spirit that hungers for worldly exploration. Her versatility within the motorcycle world is a testament to her pure passion and appreciation for two-wheels and adventure. She delved into Flat Track racing, where she honed her skills and showcased her competitive spirit. Additionally, she embraced other roles such as being a flag girl at motocross races, hosting motorsport events and so much more, all while further deepening her involvement in the motorcycle industry. Every opportunity to connect with motorcycles and people was a chance she eagerly seized. Beyond motorcycles, she is an avid traveler on a mission to visit as many small towns with unique heritage across the nation. Whether on the race track or exploring small towns, Leticia Cline’s connection with motorcycles is an enduring and captivating part of her life story. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Give us a little update on your current endeavors and share a little brief biography that highlights your background. Leticia Cline: I was born and raised in Cave City, Kentucky. It’s next to the longest cave in the world. My dad loved motorcycles and built motorcycles, so I was always around. I started riding when I was four and just kind of went from there. I did everything that I could to make money at it. Racing, riding, I was a flag girl or a 30 second board girl at motocross races and just anything I could and I loved it, and it took me everywhere. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: One of your videos called, Forever Tourist, you were going through the country looking for unique places that have unique stories. So which destination through those travels left you with a lasting impression and why? And how did it shape your perspective on life? Leticia Cline: You know, I’m drawn to small towns. I came from one and I feel like it’s the real authenticity of America and the last true innovators are found there. So, you know, my favorite places are the small towns, and currently I go to about 120 a year. But back when I was traveling, if you wanted something larger, I mean, national parks, there’s nothing better than nature. And I would say in America, Glacier is by far one of the most gorgeous, it doesn’t even seem real. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: You’re dating Mike Wolfe from American Pickers. I grew up watching that show with my dad and Mike would find cool motorcycles. He was recently featured in Easyriders Magazine, showcasing all of these. Do you ever go out with him and search for these motorcycles and what has been your favorite bike in his collection? Leticia Cline: There’s this 1926, it’s an Indian, a 845, road racer. I think there was only 30 or so engines built, but there’s only two bikes that were made from it. It was built for European racing and it sits under the stairs and it’s just a beautiful bike. It’s in pristine condition. And I like the fact that there were only two of them. So I guess I’d pick that one. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Throughout your career and your life, you’ve encountered many triumphs and moments of setback. So I know you’re a survivor of cancer, but you’ve also done so many great things in your career, like racing and hosting. So can you share one particular instance where you faced a significant challenge and how did you manage to overcome it? Leticia Cline: I mean there was plenty, but I think that year that I did racing for Harley, for hooligan was, there was a lot of things that I didn’t make public. So aside from the battle, I was really fortunate in the fact that I found my cancer early. The early detection saved me, but it was a longer process of dealing with it with a few surgeries that were really painful. I didn’t really tell anyone in the beginning of those for the first few months. And I still raced during that time, but I also had an abscess tooth that almost killed me. It was horrible. It was in my bloodstream. I was on bedrest for about three months right before I started racing. So I was extremely weak and physically just super tired and I had no strength. So that was hard. How I overcame it was honestly, other people motivate me. I always feel an obligation to leave behind a legacy or something that I’ve done — a record that someone’s gonna come and beat. I just think that’s amazing and I’ve always led my life by this proverb that says, “Great men plant trees that they know they will not feel the shade from.” So I just wanna do things more. I was like, you know what, there’s no other women on the Harley Hooligan team. I have to do this and I have to get other women to do it. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: I would like to know, have you ever been in a motorcycle accident on the road? Leticia Cline: A few, but nothing crazy. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Have you done much riding in California? And where’s your favorite spot there? Leticia Cline: Yeah, I’ve rode a ton in California and I love it. I love it, it’s so diverse. I mean, I love riding all the way from north to the bottom of it. But I would say like area wise, Northern California is just gorgeous to me. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What’s your advice to someone who wants to make their passion a full-time job and be successful? Leticia Cline: I think it was just growing up, my dad always told me, find what it is, what you love to do and figure out a way to make a living at it. Then one time I was saving up to go to film and video school and I was waiting until I moved down to Florida to go to it when I was ready. And my dad said, if you wait until you’re ready, you’ll never be ready. if you go do it, you will figure it out. And that’s what I’ve done. I think adaptability, being really open to new experiences, and make yourself comfortable in uncomfortable settings, I think that helps. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: With all of this experience you’ve gained in all these different industries, what are some unique insights and lessons you have gained from navigating these different worlds and how have they influenced your approach to life? Leticia Cline: I learn every day and I don’t ever wanna stop learning. Everything has always taught me that if I work really, really hard at something, that I will get it.
