Now that you’ve put away all of your festive decorations, you probably feel as if you could use a vacation after surviving another hectic holiday season! I know that we sure do! For some, the holiday season kicks off the day after Halloween and goes full throttle until New Years Day. We absolutely love the holiday season, but we feel as if we were in a whirlwind! Now is the time that Stan and I start making ride plans for the upcoming year. Gotta say, we are fortunate to live in a state that has so many bucket list destinations to visit - many of which are conveniently located here in Northern California. Throughout the years, we have met many out of state riders that openly share their bucket list with us. They want to see and ride thru the giant Redwoods, experience Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Hollister and ride along the Pacific Coast Highway. And yet - here they all are…right here in our backyard! Isn’t this is awesome? Also, we wanted to bring to your attention a couple of new supporters of this publication! So, if you find you and your bike stranded somewhere – give LANE SPLITTER TOWING a call. They have professional operators and specialized equipment to get you and your motorcycle home safely. Another new supporter is CHIROPRACTOR Dr. Terek Lovell-Brown – who also is an avid rider! Thank you for joining us! We appreciate ALL of the advertisers and supporters of this publication! Cheers to a healthy and successful 2024 for all! RIDE FREE RIDE OFTEN Stan & Terri Hill Owners/Editors Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 2

RIDE DESTINATION: ‘Tis The Toy Run Season Well, turkey day is in the rear view and winter is definitely setting in and to the biker community, that means the start of toy run season. Whether you’re celebrating the birth of Christ, or that season of giving and family gatherings (or both for that matter) there are a whole lot of kids out there that aren’t as fortunate as others. Every year these runs help contribute thousands of toys to families with limited resources. Our Christian Motorcycle Association chapter (Riders of the Cross) enthusiastically participates in these efforts, alongside the other NorCal chapters, and countless other clubs and ministries. For the past few years, we have come across families that, for unexpected reasons, found themselves in some type of hardship. This year we would ride up to Foresthill to help out a family in need. Shannon, our chapter secretary, introduced us to the Ivanovich family. This year Mat (aka: dad) started undergoing treatment for a serious medical condition. We wanted to spread some cheer to the family, Mat, Charlene (mom), and the kids Nicolas, Anthony, and Gracelyn. Armed with ideas for gifts, sizes, and needs, we did a little shopping. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, we loaded up the bikes and cars, and followed Santa and the Missus to make a delivery. The family was very appreciative of the toys and financial contributions we were able to raise. We’re very happy to be able to help out! Lined Up and Ready Max, Rick, and Zz CONTINUED... About a week later we were off to Auburn for the Gold Country Toy Run. Carlos and Emma from C & E Auburn Indian organized the short ride from Rec Park over to the Regional Park. We helped Wayne and his Faithful Warriors CMA chapter distribute hundreds of toys to some really happy kids. Pulling In Next up was the Modified Motorcycle Association Toy Run (the oldest of them all.) Sign ups for the ride were at Folsom Harley with gifts handed out to the kids at the Nissan Dealership on Auburn Blvd. Our booth was set up along with the many different MC’s attending. Food trucks, games and crafts for the kiddos made this a really fun run. I think just about everyone got pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus and their helpful elves. Last, but not least, was Nevada City Toy Run. This popular run started at the Rood Center. After a lot of “good to see you’s’ and coffee, approximately 1,500 or so bikes fired up and proceeded through downtown Nevada City, then on through Grass Valley, with kickstands coming down at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. It’s kind of nice seeing all the towns folk waving and cheering as the bikes pass by. All told, because of these events, thousands of families, we hope, will have just a little nicer Christmas. And I’m sure we’re not the only ones who feel that we who participate in these events receive the bigger blessing. With that, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Don’t forget the reason for the season. If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley Christmas Lights Tour J ust sit right back and read this tale, a story about a December evening ride. Always a chilly night, make sure you dress warm. They met up at a local coffee shop, sipping hot cocoa or a cup of Joe. The Skipper is a mighty good rider, brave and sure. He took forty riders out that night for a three-hour tour. A three-hour Christmas Light tour. The weather started getting cold. They plugged in their heated gear. Some enjoyed their heated grips and others froze their fingertips. If not for the riding skill of the fearless forty, some might have been lost. The Skipper turned down a little lane, bright with Christmas lights. They made a U-turn in a small driveway, then off to other sights. Best to get off the dark lit country roads and ride into town. He led them through crowded neighborhoods, sometimes stopping for a long wait. Slow cages barely moving forward, exhaust fumes powerful enough to make some ill. Santa and his Reindeer Mickey Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 10
The riders held strong as they enjoyed the colorful displays. Santa Claus in his sleigh, Rudolph too. Frosty the Snowman, Snoopy and a plane, great big outdoor Christmas trees, and a movie on the wall. Let us not forget the lights galore, the best part of the show. Now this is the tale of a group of friends out riding and having fun. When the three-hour tour was complete, the riders had been through several neighborhoods in Granite Bay, Loomis, Folsom, Orangevale, Roseville and Rocklin. Before they split up to go home, the ride ended at a local diner. Some went inside for a bite to eat, others to get a cup of coffee and warm up. Yes, even with the biting cold, everyone had a good time on this three-hour tour. Every year, we are excited to ride the annual Christmas Lights Tour. By Lulu We had a huge opportunity fall in our lap this summer. Gator Ken and Jeani rented a farmhouse in Clyde, North Carolina and invited us to ride the mountains with them for a few days. I have ridden the Smokies several times years ago but had never “Slayed the Dragon” on even the back of a bike! So, it was on my bucket list! 11 miles with 318 curves and we did it in about 22 minutes! The Tail of the Dragon in Deal’s Gap was amazing, and I only had to flip off one idiot on a jap bike that passed us on a hairpin turn! Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday it isn’t as busy as RIDING THE SMOKIES Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 18
the weekend. AND don’t look at the Wall of Shame before you go…you will be too nervous! The weather was amazing. The farmhouse came complete with cows and ground hogs!! We were able to spend every day riding to new and interesting bars, restaurants, the Casino in Cherokee and Gatlinburg/ Pigeon Forge Tn. Every day was an adventure! The place not to miss for future trips was Bobarosa Saloon in Del Rio, Tennessee. This cool dive bar is owned by a Floridian who packed up and opened this watering hole. It is situated right on the French Broad River and people create rock towers while drinking or staying there. The Iron Horse Station, a restaurant in Hot Springs, N.C had amazing food! The Twisted Spoke in Maggie Valley, is also owned by a Floridian. And Legends Bar & Grill, also in Maggie Valley, was very cool with the beer iced down in a canoe! I wouldn’t waste a trip to the casino again. The minimum bets have gotten ridiculous. And to me even though it was cool to drive by Ole Red (Blake Shelton’s Bar) and Jason Aldean’s bar in Gatlinburg, the place has turned into a complete tourist trap. It is nothing like the quaint town it was 30 years ago. The traffic even in August was too much, it made that part of the trip not worth the trouble. Truthfully, you are in the mountains for the riding, the view, and the weather!! My favorite rides were Thunder Ride in Maggie Valley which is along the water and the Rattler which has a lot of curves, but not of the nail-biting hairpin type. We also toured Wheels Through Time again, which I consider a MUST DO! Thank you, Ken and Jeani, for an amazing few days… and the home cooked ribeye dinner. Felt a little guilty eating it after getting to know the cows at the Farmhouse! Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 19
A blonde driving her new Cadillac, became lost in a snowstorm. She didn’t panic though, she remembered her Dad telling her, “if you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it.” Sure enough, fairly soon an odd truck came by, and she started to follow it. She followed for about 45 minutes. Finally, the driver got out and asked her what she was doing? She quickly explained what her Dad has told her to do about following a snow plow. The driver nodded and said, “O.K. well, I’m done with the Wal-Mart parking lot, do you want to follow me over to Best Buy now?” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My wife was fighting with the vacuum and complaining that it stopped sucking. I said, “it must of gotten married while we were out of town for the holidays. Anyways, that’s how the fight started. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A young woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, “Oh gosh, that’s probably the strangest looking baby I’ve ever seen!” The woman stomps to the rear of the bus and sits down, obviously fuming. An ole biker dude across the aisle from her sees that she’s obviously upset and asks, “What’s wrong little Momma?” The young woman replies, “The driver just insulted me!”. The ole’ biker says, “Well you just march up there and tell him off. Go on, I’ll hold your pet monkey for you.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For all those men who believe that there’s no reason to buy the entire cow when you can get the milk for free, well, in 2024, 79% of women are against marriage, as they have wised up to the fact that for 8 oz. of sausage, it’s not worth buying the entire pig! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Little Joey was sitting on the curb with a gallon of turpentine and shaking it up and watching all the bubbles. A little while later a Priest came along and asked Little Joey what he had there? Little Joey replied, “This is the most powerful liquid in the world, it’s called turpentine.” The Priest said, “No, the most powerful liquid in the world is Holy Water.” If you take some of this Holy Water and rub it on a pregnant women’s belly, she’ll pass a healthy baby. Little Joey replied, “Oh yeah, well, you take some of this here turpentine and rub it on a rat’s ass, he’ll dang sure pass a Harley-Davidson.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For all you single gals; When a guy is really into you, he doesn’t care if you snore while sleeping. He’ll be like, ‘snore for me you sexy diesel-powered generator.’ Consider this a public service announcement by your fave biker mag; Condoms do not guarantee safe sex. A friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot by the woman’s husband. js --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Liquor Store clerk just wished me Happy Holidays....it’s not even 2 weeks into New Year’s and he’s seen me every single day since 2 weeks before Christmas! Dang dude, get a calendar. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you understand completely why a pizza is made round, Packed in a square box, And eaten as a triangle.... Then and only then, will you even remotely understand women. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ma and Pa were calling it a night and shuffle on back to the bedroom. It’s a brand new year and Ma is feeling frisky and let’s Pa know this. Ma walks up and sits on the bed and sees Pa on his knees praying, and asks in a sweet, soft voice, “Pa, what are you praying for sweetheart?” Pa replies, “Just praying for some Guidance.” Ma doesn’t miss a beat and says in her husky but still soft voice, Pray for stiffness dear, I’ll guide it myself.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Valentine’s Day is next month, so here’s a Pro-Tip;Yell out exactly what you want for Valentine’s Day near your beloved’s cell phone, then, just wait for about an hour and FB and Zon will start sending you every available option of the gift you wanted. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lil’ Joey is talking to his older brother, Cain, who he overheard talking to his friends, so he asked, “What’s the difference between a Callgirl, a Girlfriend and a Wife?” His older brother Cain laughs and replies, “Pre-paid, Postpaid and Unlimited.” Not really satisfied with his brother’s answer, he goes and asks his Dad, “What’s the difference between a Callgirl, a Girlfriend and a Wife? His Dad sighs heavily and replies, “Prepaid, Postpaid and Service Not Available.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Generation-Go out all night & call in sick to work the next day. My Gen: Club hopped till 6am, slept in car for 18 mins. then showed up to work in club clothes & a club wrist band & put in 8 hrs. Aint that tough enough? Blog by Olivia Goheen for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys Born Free Cycles is a rad motorcycle shop nestled in the vibrant city of Burbank, California. The shop is owned and operated by the hardworking Alex Lopez. Born Free Cycles has been Los Angeles’ best motorcycle shop for 12 years and it looks like they won’t be slowing down anytime soon. With a deep-rooted pride in their craft, the shop team goes above and beyond to provide unparalleled service, ensuring that each rider embarks on their journey with nothing less than the best. Alex has an unwavering passion for the open road and likes to send customers off with his trademark phrase, “I won’t see you for a while because this things’ gonna run.” This statement embodies the commitment to excellence that defines Born Free Cycles. Whether it’s a regular tune-up, custom modification, or expert advice, Born Free Cycles remains dedicated to making every customer’s experience an unforgettable one. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: I’d love for you to share how your journey in the motorcycle industry started and how you became the owner of Born Free Cycles. Alex Lopez: I graduated from MMI in Arizona in 2005 with honors and a perfect attendance, which is really hard for me to do. I wasn’t the “perfect attendance” kid in high school or junior high school. I started working for a local dealer here in Los Angeles. I was there for close to 10 years. When my wife and I set out to open our own shop, I just woke up one day and I said, ”I really want to expand.” We were into the new Harleys, and we didn’t get to build custom bikes at the dealership [I worked at]. And it was just kind of always at the back of my mind, because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I love to do it in my garage. So I wanted to expand and so we came up with Born Free Cycles. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Your shop predominantly works with Harley-Davidson. So what inspired you to specialize in American-made bikes and because of this, what sets born free cycles apart from other motorcycle shops? Alex Lopez: Well, the answer is in your question, they’re American-made motorcycles and that’s what sets us apart. We specialize in only HarleyDavidson’s and American v Twin Motors, from the very antique models, all the way up to the present day. We have the knowledge, experience, and sophisticated tools to handle the new stuff. And that’s what sets us apart. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Could you walk us through the process of customizing a motorcycle for a client from design to completion? Alex Lopez: I spend time with the client. I wanna get to know them initially. I wanna know what they’re about, their style, their favorite colors and what inspires them, what they wanna be, and what they want the motorcycle to look like. We spend that kind of time to find out the overall performance of the motorcycle and then we put it in motion. So we get the results that we’re all happy with. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: And what would be your favorite part of that whole journey with your client? Alex Lopez: The relationship is kind of the most important part of it. I like that part of it. I always say, we treat you like family. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What advice would you give someone who is interested in becoming a rider? Alex Lopez: As a rider, start with the bike you want to ride. Don’t buy a bike you don’t want to ride in the fear of how much it weighs. Buy the bike that you want and adapt. Learn how to ride that motorcycle and never, ever ride out of your comfort level. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Obviously you found your passion in motorcycles, but you didn’t share how you got into motorcycles. Alex Lopez: It’s funny, I have a picture of me in a onesie when I was a baby with one leg on top of a big wheel. My dad said, ”I always knew you were gonna be some sort of biker with long hair”. The longhaired days are over. But he says, I was into motorcycles from the get. He says, you were fascinated by motorcycles. So I got into riding scooters in the eighties, in my teenage years. We were riding Vespas and we would chop ’em up and make ’em look like a chopper and build these big motors out of these things. And they were really fast. Then I rode a Triumph. My first motorcycle was a Triumph Bonneville, a ‘74. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What’s the most memorable experience working with a client on a specific motorcycle project? Alex Lopez: That’s a difficult one. The best part of this is that I’m in the motorcycle community and you meet everybody. People will call us or think Harley people got a reputation of being snobbish towards other motorcycles. You know, FTW stands for Forever Two Wheels in my book. And so it’s two wheels, right? It doesn’t matter. It’s a motorcycle, you know. So I stop and talk to the guys on the Triumphs and the women on the Triumphs and the women on the Harleys. It doesn’t matter to me. I’m passionate about motorcycles and the motorcycle community and the riding. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Have you ever gotten into a motorcycle accident? If so, what did you learn from it? Alex Lopez: Yes, of course. I hate to say it like that, but I had two accidents in my younger days. When I was 17 and I was 20. Neither of them were my fault. Both were before the helmet law. What I learned is, get yourself a good lawyer. If you need a tune-up, rebuild or require some new gear, consider visiting Born Free Cycles.
