HAVE YOU RENEWED YOUR MEMBERSHIP YET?

For 35 years we have been building Temple Beth Am and our Jewish community by living up to
our mission statement – “At the core, ours is a culture of purpose, joy and kindness. Our goal is
to make Judaism accessible… so future generations can kvell about their Jewish grandchildren.”
Four years ago, we tore down the most significant barrier to Jewish involvement by creating the
Voluntary Financial Commitment philosophy. VFC is working!
By stepping up, you make it possible for our four-year-old Voluntary Financial Commitment (VFC)
philosophy to reap tremendous fruit such as:
• Membership has risen to over 590 families (39% growth)
• Religious School has grown to over 260 kids (44% increase in students)
• More space for Judaic Educational and Social Activities for all ages with the completed
Chidush renovations
• Many more Jews who couldn’t afford membership in the past are now living active Jewish
lives.
In order to have our enhanced Judaic, educational and social programs we need your continued and
growing support. We have increased our support of Temple Beth Am to build a stronger, better
congregation.
Please join with us. We need you to do the same!
Our membership year runs from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018.

SUMMER BOOK CLUB
AUGUST MEETING: Monday, August 7th at 10:30am at Temple Beth Am
BOOK SELECTION: TO THE END OF THE LAND
LUNCH: To Be Announced
David Grossman - In this stunning, bestselling novel—and an NBCC Award finalist—David
Grossman tells the powerful story of a mother’s love for her son. Just before his release from
service in the Israeli army, Ora’s son Ofer is sent back to the front for a major offensive. In a
fit of preemptive grief and magical thinking, so that no bad news can reach her, Ora sets out
on an epic hike in the Galilee. She is joined by an unlikely companion—Avram, a former friend
and lover with a troubled past—and as they sleep out in the hills, Ora begins to conjure her
son. Ofer’s story, as told by Ora, becomes a surprising balm both for her and for Avram—and a
mother’s haunting meditation on war and family.
SEPTEMBER MEETING: Monday, September 11th at 10:30am at Temple Beth Am
BOOK SELECTION: MAKING TOAST
LUNCH: To Be Announced
Roger Rosenblatt - When his daughter, Amy—a gifted doctor, mother, and wife—collapses and dies from an
asymptomatic heart condition, Roger Rosenblatt and his wife, Ginny, leave their home on the South Shore of
Long Island to move in with their son-in-law, Harris, and their three young grandchildren: six-year-old Jessica,
four-year-old Sammy, and one-year-old James, known as Bubbies. Long past the years of diapers, homework, and
recitals, Roger and Ginny—Boppo and Mimi to the kids—quickly reaccustom themselves to the world of small
children: bedtime stories, talking toys, play dates, nonstop questions, and consequential thought. Though reeling
from Amy's death they carry on, reconstructing a family, sustaining one another, and guiding three lively, alert, and
tender-hearted children through the pains and confusions of grief. As he marvels at the strength of his son-in-law,
a surgeon, and the tenacity and skill of his wife, a former kindergarten teacher, Roger attends each day to "the one
household duty I have mastered"—preparing the morning toast perfectly to each child's liking.
With the wit, heart, precision, and depth of understanding that has characterized his work, Roger Rosenblatt peels
back the layers on this most personal of losses to create both a tribute to his late daughter and a testament to
familial love. The day Amy died, Harris told Ginny and Roger, "It's impossible." Roger's story tells how a family
makes the possible of the impossible.
