Welcome to Island!
Welcome to another issue of Island.
Once again, Island brings you places
to eat, drink and shop from Perdido
Key to Orange Beach and Gulf
Shores. And of course, smiling faces
and notable locals. In Orange Beach
I visited legendary Live Bait for their
snow crabs and bushwacker, and
Big Fish for their martinis and sushi.
I introduce Bill Howard, creator of
Wild Bill's Wing Sauce, and famed
Flora-Bama author Christopher
Edward Warner. I bring you brunch
from Brick and Spoon, and bagels
from NY Bagel. And I even got to sample the fabulous bundt
cakes at Rum Sisters along the beach highway. Along with
graphic designer Summerlyn Gwin, we bring another
edition of big, vibrant photographs to tell the story of
Pleasure Island. Now get out there and support the local
businesses in this shoulder season.

You know you’re a pretty good Orange Beach restaurant when you’ve
earned the slogan - ‘where friends get together.’ And you’ve done a pretty
good job if one of the semi-regulars is Emeril Lagasse. Now, it doesn’t hurt
when you also serve some of the best chow on the island. And this is what
Big Fish has become over the years. On any given night, the bar is teeming
with locals enjoying superb sushi hand rolled by none other than “Mimi.”
Owners Leck and Jana Lilayuva go the extra mile to create one of the
island’s premier upscale, but relaxed eaters on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
Sure, there’s the stunning dining room, awesome patio and lighted bar. But
what makes Big Fish one the island’s best restaurants is the menu. It holds
upscale creations from the Gulf of Mexico as well as some of the best cuts
of meat around. Whether you belly up to the bar for some awesome sushi
or need to wine and dine your significant other, Big Fish is well worth it for
food, fun and atmosphere. Plus, you just never know who’ll you run into.

Who doesn't love tater tots? Umm, no red-blooded
American. Now, you can find tots all over the
island smothered with a variety of goodness blan-
keting said tots. Recently, I had the chance to
sample the tots dish at Anchor Bar & Grill.
Words and images by Brian Kelly Created by Anchor owner/chef Jonathan
Kastner, the Brisket Tots ($13) is a basket
of crispy tater tots topped with a perfectly
cooked and seasoned smoked brisket, pickled
red onions, cotija sour cream, tomato jam,
jalapenos, and topped with a sunny side up
egg. Yep, it's enough for two. Grab a cold beer
and dig into this crazy good creation.
Some shops are more than what
they seem. Such is the case for
Perdido Pack & Ship, LLC a little
gem of a shop tucked on the
Pensacola side of the Theo Baars
Bridge. Now, the current Perdido
Pack location was taken over by
its current owner Vicky Chandler
six years ago. With four
employees under her, Chandler
has established herself as a
reputable place to do daily
business. But, this is not your
run-of-the-mill pack shop. Nope.
PPSS stocks some pretty hip
merchandise. From handmade
jewelry to locally silk screened
rock and roll t-shirts to musical
instruments to even a selection of
local literature. There’s also so
eclectic items you’ll find, some
real treasures that for some
reason you just can’t do without.
Yeah, you’ll go in to send dear
ole mom a birthday package in
Lincoln, Nebraska, but you’ll
leave with bad ass Grateful Dead
t-shirt, a book by local author
Chris Warner and maybe some
jewelry by Hot Sands Glass artist
Lyn Gentry. But, at least you’ll
know your package will be sent
with love and care by Vicky
Chandler. And by the way, hang
out with Chandler for a while.
She knows all the lore of Perdido
Key and the West Side.

Scoo Koehn
If you frequent Flippers or the Pleasure Island Tiki Bar in
Orange Beach, then it's likely you've heard singer-guitarist
Scott Koehn, one of the island's best kept secrets. An
Atlanta native, Koehn has been a traveling musician since
the age of 16 but calls Orange Beach home these days.
Koehn brings his brand of country, blues, and Southern
Rock, but eases his style to go along with the casual island
atmosphere. These two venuse are perfect for Koehn who
just makes you want to have a bushwacker and chill to
some classic beach covers. Want to catch Scott Koehn?

Words and images Gary Story
by Brian Kelly
I began writing about Gary Story back
in 2005 in the Perdido area. Since then,
Story hasn't slowed one bit. Now, he can
be found at the beach, tearing it up with
his guitar skills and rockin' covers, but
lately he's been a regular at The Front
Porch in Lillian, Ala. There, Story hosts
open mic night while stepping in to
entertain the crowd with his
unmistakeable rockin' style. He can also
be found on stage at the Purple Parrot and
Flipdaddy's in Orange Beach. Check out
where Gary Story is playing at
