As a student of Applied Science BTEC, we
would like you to get involved in STEM
activities and helping KS4 students as a
subject ambassador.
You will also be able to learn how to use the
school’s planetarium.
Learning style
All learning styles are welcome. BTEC Applied Science is one of only a few Level 3 courses which still
has coursework, as a result it is particular suited to those who struggle with examination pressure and
stress.
Assessment
Students of Applied Science BTEC are assessed in a slightly different manner to those taking singular, A-
Level routes.
On the BTEC Level 3 course, students do sit exams but only contributing to 40% of your mark. The
remaining assessment is continual, including investigations, practical work, reports, presentations and
posters.
Entry Requirements
Science GCSE grade 4 4 or above or Distinction or above in BTEC level 2 Science.

Studying BTEC law will enable you to pursue a wide range of university courses, apprenticeships
and careers. It provides the basis of an excellent route for learners to pursue a career in the legal
sector.
Transferable skills are those such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are
valued in both higher education and the workplace.
What will you learn?
The English Legal System – how the Criminal Justice System works. For example; courts,
sentencing, bail, police powers, access to funding, judges.
You will learn what you need to show to prove someone has committed, for example, theft. Also;
robbery, blackmail, burglary, criminal damage, murder, manslaughter, assault and battery.
The English Legal System – how the Civil System works. For example; courts, how to make a claim,
other ways to settle civil disputes.
You will learn what you need to show to prove someone has been negligent and a range of other
Civil Torts.
Learning style
All learning styles are welcome. The course has 2 coursework modules and 2 exams where preparatory
notes can be taking in, thus benefitting those who struggle with exam pressures.

Performance
Is this course for you?
If you are interested in performing music then this
course could be for you!
It is a vocational and practical course. You need to
be self-motivated and have a mature attitude to your
work.
Possible pathways
Studying BTEC Music Performance allows you to access a wide range of university courses,
apprenticeships and careers.
This course leads directly to careers within the music industry. It also leads on to popular music
courses at universities such as the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and the British Institute
of Modern Music in Manchester.
What will you learn?
You will study many topics throughout the two year course.
There is a range of modules to choose from. Current students are studying performance
techniques, popular music history, song writing and community music.
What enrichment can I get
involved in?
There are lots of extra-curricular opportunities within
the music department. High-standard singers can
join our advanced vocal group, The Luminelles. We
also have a joint jazz band and string group with St
Anselm’s College and a choir at BHSA. Many of our
sixth form music students also get involved with the
teaching of singing, keyboards on violin on the Year 7
instrumental scheme – this can contribute to their
work in the community music module.
Learning style
With BTEC, students get out what they put in. They need to be willing to practise regularly in their
own time, show initiative when researching projects, and ask for help when they need it. Teachers are
facilitators, overseeing and advising, and are more like university tutors in their approach to running
the course.
Assessment
Students will be assessed in a variety of ways appropriate to each module. This will include project
work, live performances, video/audio recordings and evaluations.
Their record keeping is crucial to show their progress throughout the course.

Production Arts
Is this course for you?
Do you enjoy the Theatre? Are you creative? Do you
enjoy organising events? Do you have an interest in
Production Arts? Makeup? Costume? Do you like
being part of a team? If you answer yes to more than
three of these questions, then Production Arts may
be a good choice for you.
Possible pathways
Studying Production Arts is a stepping-stone towards further study of live events or design based
courses at specialist universities. Some of our students have continued along this road taking
higher education courses in stage management, theatre technology, theatre or film production
and events management. Students have also been able to step straight into employment after
leaving school, working for companies or theatres on events, making use of their production
experience.
Future prospects
• HND & Degree courses in Arts Management, Theatre Production, Performing Arts and Events
Management.
• Production Arts Industry: theatre front-of-house, box office administration, stage management
and financial planning.
• Community Arts industry: working with schools, universities, charities, community groups and
churches to produce theatre based events.
What will you learn?
The course includes a wide range of units so that you gain an understanding of the many different
elements that support both internal and external production arts projects. Creativity is at the core
of the course. It offers flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units. You will
study 6 units over the two year course.
You can choose to specialise in make-up or costume.
Units include:

Puppet design
Special effects make-up
Stage Costume making
What enrichment can I get involved
in?
By taking Production Arts, you become a member of
the production team at BHSA and are expected to
support the numerous events that take place in
school. This includes out-of-hours rehearsals and
giving up your free time to support and prepare for
performances and events. There will be opportunities
to attend theatre visits and excursions that we run
throughout the academic year. You will become a
valid production team member!
Learning style
You will experience lessons that are discussion based and research based. You will also have the
opportunity to involve yourself practically with some of the live events taking place at BHSA. You will
also be given the chance to speak to industry professionals and visit working theatres. As the unit’s
progress, much of the work you do will become more independent, using your teacher as someone to
guide you. It is vital that you are self-motivated and that you have excellent organisational skills. You will
be responsible for the design work, creating, planning, running and evaluation of a production event.
Assessment
You will be assessed by a combination of in-class practical assessments, written and design-based
portfolio work and larger scale assessments where you will be assessed on your practical and
organizational input into live performances.
Entry Requirements
Drama grade 4 and/or GCSE Art would be advantageous.
A general interest or some experience of the Performing Arts industry or Drama Theatre groups will
be helpful.
