After various failed attempts to talk to old classmates, men, women, and other complete strangers, He finally decide to go back home talk with his younger sister, Phoebe Speaking with her, Holden finally breaks through his emotional blocks and tells his parents what happened. The novel ends with the revelation that Holden has been narrating the story from a mental institution, where he has been receiving help and waiting to attend a new school in the fall.
