TOUR 2019

At the end of March, at the start of the
Waterfalls
Easter holidays, a group of Year 7 boys set galore at Gullfoss
off for a snowy Iceland to experience (The Golden Waterfall) and
firsthand some stunning geographical, Seljalandsfoss, spilling from
topographical and ecological sights the high basalt cliffs, as a result of
over the four day tour. isostatic rebound of the land and its
lava flows. The impressive 60 metre-
high waterfall at Skógafoss is the
greatest attraction in the Skogar area;
as the waters thunder down into
the pool below, huge amounts of
spray react with the sunlight
The boys enjoyed to create a myriad of
trips to the Geysir rainbows.
Geothermal Area for the
explosive hot spring sights of
the Strokkur Geysir erupting
every 6 to 8 minutes shooting
a spout of its boiling water
and steam 15-18 metres
into the sky.

10

At the
Eyjafjallajökull
Visitors’ Centre the
boys gained a personal
look at what it’s like
to have an erupting
volcano at your back
door from under the
Sólheimajökull
Glacier.

Vík in Mýrdalur,
Iceland's most southerly
village is the only seaside
settlement in Iceland left without a
harbour due to natural circumstances.
The natural beauty of the area is
spectacular and just east of the village's
outskirts lies one of Europe's biggest
arctic tern breeding grounds. Walking on
Reynishverfi beach of black basalt sands,
boys could see columnar basalt on the
cliff faces, including at their highest,
the famous Reynisdrangar
Needles 66 metres above
sea level.

Of course
the Super
Jeep Tours were a
highlight of the trip,
up and around the
ancient Valley of
Þórsmörk!
Thanks to
the tremendous
planning and
organisation of
teachers Mr Soskic,
Miss Piper and
Mrs Johnson.
