My Broken Family Completed Me

A family is the basic structure of a society. It is composed of a father, a mother, and their children. What if
someone was out of the picture, is it still called a “family”? Since I was young, I have been searching for answers.
Growing up in a broken family is a struggle. Dealing with my half-siblings was difficult as if I was pretending to be
part of something even though I'm not. Like putting a distorted puzzle piece into the picture assuming that it would
look great but it won't. Retrieving myself from the “other” family of my father was my only escape. However, as a
young girl who doesn't have the freedom to choose. I've lived a life with two different families that were supposed to
be in unity. Days were divided on when I would spend it with, 4 days with my mother and 3 days with my father per
week. Deciding where to celebrate Christmas Eves and New Year Eves and other holidays is a dilemma. I even asked
myself before, “Laruan ba ako para pagpasa-pasahan?” I never had a permanent home. Then one time, I thought
that this negativity in my life will never change unless I change my perspective. My mother once told me, “Being part
of a broken and a blended family is not a loss, in fact, the people who loves you increased in number.”

I've rooted this phrase from my mother, not only because I admire her courage in life, but also because I love
her. Being a child of a broken family is hard but what more is most painful being a single mom of two. She is the one
that kept me and my brother breathing. I was in awe where my mother got all her courage and strength. As days pass
by, I'd see that her ultimate support comes from God. I always would see her alone, and most of the time in tears. Her
eyes closed and I can hear her whispers but cannot understand. After, she reads , she sings like crazy. After these
routines, my mother faces us with smile and perspectives we cannot imagine a single mother can bear. She has not
allowed us to grow fatherless. We had God as our father and our mother had God as her husband. I found the love I
was missing; I found the big piece of the puzzle missing in me. In our church, I found home. Since, I was filled with
God's love, I have learned to let go of the past. Yes, it is true; things will never go back to the original plan but God has
always stored the best plan. I learned to forgive people who took part of stealing my joy in having a complete family
away. I learned to love them as how God poured out his love for me. Putting God at the center of my life is the only
escape plan I have now from the bitter circumstances of being a victim of brokenness. In the Disney tv series, Lilo
and Stitch, it was said that family means no one gets left behind. Even though I belong to a broken family, I do not
feel left behind because the love of my parents toward me is not lost. It takes the help of God to realize and
appreciate the true essence of a family.

For almost 2 decades of
waiting, we are now preparing for the
wedding of my mother. My brother
and I are looking at it in a positive
light. We are happy for our mother
finally found the man she has been
praying for. It is really a time of moving
on, starting a new life, a new
opportunity to experience love in an
extended family, having God at the
center of everything. And looking at
things on how God wants us to see.
Indeed, making God as the author of
our life, there is always a happily ever
after. After all, my broken family has
completed me.

Mosquitoes hit with Japanese Encephalitis

Ashton Jhuroid R. Notarte

Japanese encephalitis is a virus spread by mosquitoes and similar to dengue. It first happened in
Japan in 1871. It is the main cause of viral encephalitis in many Asian countries. 68,000 clinical cases
happened yearly. People were shocked to know this kind of virus.

Central Luzon has 133 patients, 53 cases and 9 deaths. The Department of Health introduced the
Japanese Encephalitis vaccine in their immunization program early 2018. The vaccine is already
available. Symptoms are mild fever, headache, neck stiffness, coma, seizures and death. It is
transmitted between mosquitoes, pigs or water birds and transmitted to humans through bites of
infected mosquitoes. It is transmitted mainly during the warm season but often during rainy season.
Medication is prescribed only to relieve symptoms. Preventions are vaccines, insect repellents, coils,
vaporizers and wearing long-sleeved clothes. It is really important to keep the surroundings clean to
bring mosquitoes away.

Common Bird

Flu on rise

Gerika Goretti M. Gayo
Bird
flu, a l s o
called avian influenza,
is a viral infection that can
infect not only birds, but
also humans and other
animals. Most forms of the viruses
are restricted to birds. H5N1 is the
most common form of bird flu.
It is deadly to birds and can easily affect hum-
ans and other animals that come in con- t a c t
with it. According to the World Health Organi- z a t i o n ,
H5N1 was first discovered in humans in 1997 and has killed nearly
60% of those infected. Currently, the virus isn't known to transmit human to
human contact. Although, there are several types of bird flu. H5N1 was the first avian
influenza virus to infect humans. The first infection occurred in Hong Kong in 1997.
The cause was handling an infected poultry. It occurs naturally in wild waterfowl,
but it can spread easily to poultry. The disease is transmitted to
humans through contact with infected bird feces, nasal secretions , or
secretions from the mouth or eyes. Consuming properly cooked
poultry or eggs from infected birds doesn't transmit the bird flu,
but eggs should never be served runny. Meat is
considered safe if it has been cooked to an
internal temperature of 165 degrees
Fahrenheit.
