THE LE GEND OF MA HSURI
(THE STORY OF WAN MAHURA)
BY IZZA SAFIRAH BINTI
MOHD ROSDIN
ONCE UPON A TIME,
Mahsuri was born in Pulau Langkawi.
Despite their family was poor, Mahsuri was
brought up with love by her parents. Mahsuri
then grew up to be a very beautiful maiden.
A guy named Kelana wished to marry her.
Mahsuri's parents agreed and soon they
were married.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
The village chief's wife, Mahura, was envious
of Mahsury's attractiveness. She planned to
do something evil to Mahsuri. At that time,
Kedah was attacked by Siam. Kelana has to
go to war to defend Kedah from being
conquered by the Siamese.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
Mahsuri was very sad that she couldn't be by
Kelana's side and wished for his safe return.
She therefore lived by herself and went
about her business without bothering
anyone.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
One day, a cloth merchant came to Mahsuri's
house, asking for directions. Wan Mahura, who
accidentally saw them together, thought that
Mahsuri was cheating while her husband went to
war. Little did Wan Mahura know, the merchant
came with four other men, and they were just
asking for directions.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
Despite having no evidence to back up her
claims, Wan Mahura told the entire village that
Mahsuri was not being faithful to her husband.
The villagers believed her story, and soon the
news spread to the whole village. Wan Mahura
was delighted that the villagers believed her
story.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
Wan Mahura's story reached the village chief.
Interestingly, the chief did not get angry as to
Wan Mahura's expectations. Instead, he asked
Wan Mahura herself about the news.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
"Are you sure that Mahsuri is alone with that
merchant?" he asked. Trembling in fear, Wan
mahura answered the question. "I'm not sure,
but I saw her talking together with the
merchant," said Wan Mahura. Curious with her
answer, the village chief asked his men to bring
Mahsuri and the merchant to his house.
At the village chief's house, the merchant
explained that he was with his friends. They
stopped by Mahsuri's house just to ask for
directions. Mahsuri agreed with the merchant.
She then explained that she had never known the
merchant before that incident.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
After hearing their explanation, the village
chief asked Wan Mahura to apologise to
them. He was very angry with her for
accusing people without any evidence.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
Wan Mahura was sorry for accusing Mahsuri
without knowing the truth. The kind mahsuri
forgave her, but on one condition; she had to
explain to the villagers the truth. Wan Mahura
agreed to the terms and told the villagers the
truth the following day.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
Since then, Mahsuri and Wan Mahura's
relationship has gotten better, and they
always greet each other when they meet.
Moral of the story:
we must not be easily misled by
people
forgiveness will lead to a better
relationship
we must always speak with proof
