OPINION OF GILANA AKA ARTIST
STATEMENT

AUTOETHNOGRAPHY 29-04-2019

Dear diary,
Today the first brief of Creative Development for 2019 is due. The brief
required Gilana to create a personal manifesto and find a creative way to
execute it.

She decided to create a personal manifesto based on trusting and believing
in herself. The creative execution she chose was to do a mirror so when she
read the manifesto, she stared at herself I guess this just reinforced her
whole concept of learning to trust and believe in herself.

Since this was the first task of her creative development journey, this is
honestly the one I am least proud of. I know she is a very shy and private
person so having to create a personal manifesto that another person was
going to read definitely terrified her more than it should have. I know what
she is capable of and this was not it. I mean the concept was good, I have
always told her this so I do take ful credit for this idea. Her execution though
could have been much better. To be fair though, she ful y procrastinated
and since the 28th of April was her birthday, she definitely did not give this
execution the time and effort it deserved
.
When she explained it to me, she said and I quote:” Trust is a fundamental
aspect in almost everyone’s lives and so are mirrors. Everyone owns or sees
themselves in a mirror everyday of their lives. The metaphorical meaning be-
hind using a mirror is that every day I look at myself in a mirror whether it’s
doing my basic hygiene routine (brushing teeth, washing face etc.) or simply
just to make sure I look presentable for wherever I am going to. I am also
faced with having to try and trust people and myself every day, both the

mirror and having to trust are constants in my life and when putting them
together, the mirror physical y shows me who I need to trust which is myself.”

What? Don’t @ me, I just have a real y good memory.

VISUAL RHETORIC 28-05-2019

Dear diary,
My girl is final y opening up (a little). Today she handed in a task which asked
her to use visual research to develop ideas for a satirical parody, based on
a specific historical period or genre, person or artwork.

She made a poster that makes a statement that the ( former ) president
of the United States of America, Donald Trump is teling al females that he
is in charge of how their bodies which can have the figurative meaning that
he has control over their lives and choices.

This is a subject matter that I KNOW Gilana feels super strongly about so I
was extremely proud of her for showing a smal part of who she is and what
she believes in. For century’s woman have been seen as the weaker gender
and not on the same standard as men. Women have always been seen as
inferior in both a physical and mental way. Women have worked hard to
final y be recognized as equal human beings and not just their gender. The
fight for women’s rights has been an ongoing struggle for years. Gilana’s
main reasoning behind this concept was “Gender equality is, first and fore-
most, a human right”. The fact that in 2019 she felt the need to speak
about this speaks volumes and they say I’m a monster.

This one I was impressed with and dare I say, may be one of my favourites.
Since some women believe it to be a war against women. The use of a US
propaganda poster from 1812 that is commanding American’s to join the
army in order to fight in the war. When one thinks of Donald Trump, one
thinks of America so with this in mind, Trump is the main association many
have towards the United States of America (USA). Trump helps convey the

message that America is the country that has this ban in place without
actual y having to use the words America or USA anywhere on the poster.

Here’s to hoping this is the first of many projects that she opens up in.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT 22.-08-2019

Dear diary,
Okay this task is the literal definition of our dear friend Gilana,
This task was a group task in which they were required to explore the life
of various sectors of society in a neighbourhood or city. The brief required
them to make a positive difference in either a place or persons life.

They decided to make a portable news stand for a sweet man named Eric
with a covered shelf to protect his newspapers from rain or wind. A wagon
type base for him to use to wheel his stand around. This initiative was to
help make his life easier and more convenient for him in his daily life. We
believe the intervention is suitable for the environment and the recipient as
it aims to make an active difference in the lives of those involved.

You may be wondering why I said “this project is the literal definition of
Gilana” and that is exactly what I am going to explain to you right now. Our
girl, the shy and private girl LOVES to help others. She always wants to be
there for others and help everyone (sometimes this trait does lead to her
downfal but oh wel). Butttt with that being said she HATES group work so
you could only imagine the internal struggle she went through. This project
was great when it came to the final execution but the group work aspect
seemed like it definitely may have burned some bridges when it comes to
choosing a group to work with in the future.

Don’t quote me on that, that’s just my opinion.



AUTOBIOGRAPHIC VISUAL STORY-

TELLING 23-09-2019

Helo, diary
Not to be dramatic or anything but this was my first debut, my time to
shiiiinneee

This project asked her to create a comic strip that makes a comment on
a personal situation or lifestyle that Gilana have experienced in the past or
present without using colour or any digital methods.

She chose to extremely over exaggerate her life struggle of being the
youngest child by years which is my concept for the comic strip caled “Over
protective parents”.

Apparently, my way of life is an inspiration to her because I final y got the
recognition I deserve. She final y showed her fun side. Her usual way of
writing is more on the fun side and with a humourous tone. She may be shy
and private but once you get to know her you wish she went back to being
the shy quiet girl. this comic strip real y shows a lot of her personal life and
personality. She introduced herself as the youngest over protected child with
a humourous tone of voice. Since she is a private person and feels uncom-
fortable opening up, she used me as her character to portray herself.

She used pen and paper to create a cartoon drawing of a mother (her
mother) monster - it is important to note she does not refer to her mother
as a monster - and the baby monster named Sid (yes that’s me) to rep-
resent herself. This is very exaggerated but with that being said she does
have life360 on her phone for her mother to track her and she does have

to message her when she arrives somewhere as wel as when she leaves to
come home.

I personal y loved this task but I may just be biased because I mean, look how
cute I am. Baby Sid is adorable.

REFLECTION AND VISUAL OF CREATIVE

28-10-2019

We have final y reached the end of first year, thank GOODNESS. Oh, also hi
diary.

This final brief was to write a reflection on what Gilana had learnt in every
learning unit from 2019 and visualise the creative process established up to
this point by including al tasks I had mentioned before.

I’m not going to ful y speak about the reflective essay she wrote about her
experiences with first year’s tasks (quite frankly I find it suuuper boring) but
I wil discuss her visual she created and before you ask its not only because
I’m the star (again).

The strip consists of 3 frames in which represents the 3 main stages of
the creative process. The first frame shows a character (I have a name,
how rude.) that is representative of Gilana standing in the centre of the
frame and doubting her ideas.
The second frame however is the representation of what I (Sid the monster)
say to her once she has finished spiraling out of control (this happens more
often than you think).
The final frame is her panicked and anxious state calming down and final y
realizing that overthinking and doubting herself is not going to help later on
in life and she just needs to do it in order to finish the assignment.

This is the most accurate representation of her creative process she could
have created as it shows on paper the inner struggle between being out

there and confident versus her private and anxious self. She truly loved this
assignment because she lovesss writing essays (I know, I don’t get it either)
and showing her creative side. This was as Hannah Montana would say “the
best of both worlds.”

As we can clearly see, the out there and confident persona is winning and I
don’t like to be narcissistic but I feel as if I am the one to thank for that.

Ps. Miley Cyrus please don’t sue me for using your quote, I did state it was
from your show, also big fan big fan.

INDIVIDUAL COLLECTIVE 08-06-2020

New year new us baby., I am done with the whole ‘dear diary’ sh*t, we are
now more familiar with each other so let’s get onto the entry.
This brief was a group assignment which required her group to create one
artefact based on how people and spaces impact on the group member’s
behaviours and responses. They were tasked to conceptualise one artefact
in any medium of their choice, which is a combination of one personality
attribute from each group member.

They decided to create a CD cover pamphlet along with songs based of
off 3 different requirements such as our favourite song, a song that has a
special meaning to each member and song with lyrics that they individual y
relate to and an explanation of why they chose the songs they chose. Al
together there is 15 songs on this CD.

So, this is one of the few projects I watched Gilana cry over. She real y was
not happy with the final outcome and her group. She loves each person
individual y but working with them just did not work out for her. She came
up with the idea, created the CD cover and handed it in. the CD cover she
created was NOT the final product that was handed in.

I know she hates talking bad about others but I sure as hel don’t, if they
deserve it people must know what happened. Speaking with examples, this is
the lowest mark she received throughout her Creative Development journey
and if that doesn’t show how much she disliked her outcome then I don’t
know what does.

I know the only reason she took this low mark (it wasn’t low, it was in the

70s) so hard is purely because it upset her that the work she put into for
the final project and for it to just change without any notice real y hurt her.
I was honestly scared she would go back into her shel and close herself off
purely due to her believing her work was not good enough that they felt the
need to change it.
Thank GOODNESS I was wrong, she didn’t close herself off, it pushed her to
work harder on her next one.

We are getting close the enddddd, no more crying stressed Gilana!!!

This project asked her to create a series of nine selfies where they had
to explore three different identities based on one of the themes provided.
With this she had to chalenge societal boundaries with each selfie showing
a different aspect of the chosen identities.

Surprise surprise she chose the theme culture, race and religion and focused
on the aspect of wait for it - religion. Being a Jewish female, many always
have very extreme so-caled understandings of Judaism. They assume you
are either extremely religious or don’t folow the laws at al - I mean she’s
not wrong. She came up with the idea to show both these aspects in her
created identities as wel as how she actual y folows her religion. I know she
LOVED this project and truly enjoyed every second of it.

She chose to show the 2 most common understandings of Judaism which is
being super-duper ultra-religious and then the one that keeps nothing and
barely knows what’s happening. And thennnnn final y show the truth of how
she actual y folows Judaism. Yes, she is considered as a ‘religious girl’ but not
at the standard as she portrayed before.

This entire project was a mission to teach others about her religion and
also chalenge the preconceived notions of what Judaism actual y is. I am so
proud of her and this, this is her, a chalenger, educator, helper, proud Jewish
South African female.

Too bad she is truly opening up too close to the end of the year but just
you wait, she has many other tricks up her sleeves.

ARCHEOLOGY OF BEING 13-10-2020

So, this is the final project before the final project. I believe that one is
caled a PoE whatever that means but hey we almost there!!

For this project Gilana was asked to define her own personal ideology in
writing, my girl has so many she believes in I’m so surprised this indecisive girl
was able to choose just ONE. From this she was asked to visualise at least
two elements or components from 4 categories the brief provided

Since we have been seeing throughout my entries, Gilana is a private and
shy person but also a MAJOR introvert. Here is one of her many ideologies
which is for everyone to feel accepted and always true to themselves aka
individualism. She created a subculture known as Emotional (smart name
I know right; this is why she’s doing copywriting) so people like her can
express themselves without the fear of judgement. The 2 elements she cre-
ated was a mask to help express feelings by switching between statements
that you insert into their mask and an app infographic explaining how to use
and download the app.

She definitely could have done the execution better; I know she did attempt
to make a prototype of the mask BUT someone in her family through it
away because they just saw a broken mask and not a piece of art. This
is one of her worse executions because if we being honest with ourselves,
she’s getting lazy and losing motivation to carry on working with her usual
work ethic. She is for sure burning out, poor baby.

I know she can do better than what she presented. Fingers crossed she

doesn’t f*ck up this last one.
Alexa please tel me she didn’t f*ck up this last one. You know her work
