My Pet Beagle KABIR S DAHIYA
VI NILE
I have a pet beagle,
She has just turned four.
Whenever you’re around her,
You’ll never get bored.
She snorts like a pig
And snores inn her sleep
She growls like a lion
But is timid like a sheep
She’s cute and sweet
With her big round eyes
Her favourite pastime
Is catching houseflies
She’s one dog who loves to bark and bite
And she runs like crazy with all her mite.
She has eaten almost everything
From my books to a needle.
But I’m very glad…
That she’s still as a fiddle.

INDIA OF MY DREAMS MANBHAV SUGLA
VIII TAPTI
All of us want India to become a super power in the world. India
has a rich past and it was because of its riches, that it was invaded
innumerable times and it’s wealth was plundered. The various
invaders exploited our country. At the time of independence, the
country was in turmoil, it’s economy was shattered and there was
unrest all around. In 68 years since independence, the country has
made tremendous progress. However it is still far behind the
developed countries of the world. India of my dreams is a
peaceful, progressive and literate country free from shackles of
poverty, where every citizen feels safe and secure, where health
facilities are provided to all and where woman of the country are
treated with utmost dignity and respect. India of my dreams is a
country where nobody sleeps hungry; where there is no
distinction on the basis of gender, religion or caste; where justice
to a common man is neither delayed nor denied; where corruption
in public life does not exist; where criminals cannot occupy
ministerial berths nor enter the legislative assemblies; where
merit counts in every sphere of life; where jobs cannot be
purchased; where the intellectuals do not have to leave the
country’s share for higher research and recognition; a country
which all the Indians can be truly be proud of. I love my India and
want it to be the best in the world.

SPARKY, A SECRET
Far to the East in the countryside, you could see animal farms, barns and cottages on either side of the
road. In one of those cottages lived the Smith family. It was a pleasant summer evening, Mr and Mrs
Smith were out in their garden having a cup of tea. Their children, Lauren and Jake, were out playing
with their friend, Jim. He had recently got a new puppy, Olly, as a gift from his uncle. They all loved
playing with Olly, whenever she saw them, she used to start jumping and running around them.
Lauren and Jake longed for a puppy themselves but every time they asked their parents, they would
receive the same answer that puppies need a lot of looking after and they don’t have enough time.
Lauren and Jake tried convincing them by saying that they would look after it well, but they were still
denied as they were only five, thus too young to take care of it.
A few days later when they were playing with Jim and Olly, a nearby bush started rustling, suddenly they
saw a puppy coming out! The three children with Olly ran to the puppy which soon started sniffing their
feet. They carried the puppy to a tree having a small pit at the bottom with lush green bedding. They
rested him in there with some water to drink. They played with him afterwards, watching him trying to
cross over Olly made the kids laugh.
It was soon time for them to go home, they didn’t want to leave the new puppy alone so Jim suggested
that Lauren and Jake should take him home. He’d forgotten that they couldn’t take him home, as they
were not allowed to. They eventually decided to secretly keep him in Olly’s kennel. The next day when
they met, they realised they hadn’t kept a name for the new puppy yet. They decided to name him
Sparky as he was as bright and happy as a spark of light. They kept him a secret as neither of the
children’s parents would allow a puppy.
Days, weeks and soon months went by, yet, no one knew about Sparky except the three children. Sparky
and Olly had both grown quite a bit, but still never used to bite each other. It’s like they are best friends
the way the children are. One evening, there was a party that the kids attended, thus, couldn’t play with
Sparky. After the party, Jim was having a night stay at Lauren and Jake’s place. Just when everyone was
about to go to bed, they heard a dog barking and howling. They all got to the backdoor to chase away
the dog which was making such a ruckus. Once they opened the door, a dog ran to where the kids were
standing and started pouncing on them with delight.
Well, Mr and Mrs Smith needed an explanation of what was going on. Since it was all in front of their
eyes, the kids had to fess up that they were secretly taking care of a dog. The parents asked them how
long this was going on for, and the children replied a few months. Lauren and Jake thought that their
parents were cross with them and started blubbering that they are truly sorry and won’t do so ever
again.
Sparky started whimpering as if he could understand what they were talking about. Looking at the
whimpering puppy and the children sobbing, Mr and Mrs Smith gave a smile and agreed to keep the
grownup puppy.

THE SELFISH PRINCESS
There once lived a princess named Iisha. She was a very brave and a sweet girl. She
lived in a big mansion made up of glass and she had a big garden outside her house
with benches to sit, teatime tables, barbeque, swings like slides, see saw etc and a
swinging bench hidden inside a canopy of trees.
She used to love the swinging bench and always used to sit there for 1 hour once in
a day. One day, the princess said,” This bench is mine and I will not share it to
anyone.” She became greedy and cursed the bench” Oh bench, I curse you that from
now on nobody can sit on you except me, if anyone tries to sit then that person will
die or something bad will happen to his or her family.” Without thinking for a
moment, she ran to her home.
The very next day was a fine one and the princess’s cousin sister had come to stay
with her for five days. Her name was Limaisha. Iisha had forgotten about the curse.
The next day, Iisha and her sister were playing in the garden when Iisha’s father called
her for bring a parcel from his friend. At first Iisha said no, but later she agreed. While
the princess was away, her sister found the bench. She sat and started swinging on
it. She felt very relaxed. The day after , Limaisha’s mother told her to collect some
wood for a bonfire. She went and collected a lot of them in a jute basket. While
coming back, suddenly she fell to the ground.at home, Iisha discovered that Limaisha
had not come back home. She ran and ran to see Limaisha fainted on the ground.
With tears in her eyes, she carried her sister home and told her parents to consult a
doctor immediately. The doctor spoke” She is in a very critical situation. If not given
immediate help, then she might die.” After hearing this everyone was suprised.
Iisha prayed to the god,” oh lord, what mistake have I done which has brought my
dear sister in trouble? Please guide me.” Suddenly, a yellow light surrounded Iisha
and she heard the god’s voice,” Dear Iisha, please recall the time you had cursed the
swinging bench. Earlier that day when you had gone to collect the parcel, your sister
sat on the swing. Today, she is facing the path of death. Please forgive the bench and
take back your sister!” saying this, the light disappeared. The princess realized that
she had made a big mistake. She ran to the swing and said,” Oh swing, please forgive
me. I was being selfish not realizing that it could bring my whole family in danger.
Please throw all the bad spirits away!” the bench seemed to agree as darkness came
out and all the bad spirits where washed away!
She ran to her sister and saw that she was in perfect condition. She told her sister
about the curse. Her sister being kind said,” everybody makes mistake but that
mistake can be only solved by accepting it.” She hugged her sister. From that day
onwards, Iisha did not be greedy and lived happily ever after.
MORAL- NEVER BE GREEDY OR SELFISH AS THERE IS AN END TO A MAN’S NEED, BUT
NO END TO A MAN’S GREED
THE END!

Close Encounters with the Lesson: Globes
For my summer vacation while I was in Boston, USA. We took a road trip to Portland, Maine on 31st May,
2017. When I heard the name Maine I realized I had heard it before in S.St class when our teacher was teaching
us about globes. I remembered that Eartha, the largest 3D model of the Earth, is in Yarmouth, Maine. I asked
my parents if we could stop to see Eartha. Eartha is the world’s largest rotating replica of the Earth and it is
in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest Globe in the world. Walking around the globe, I
was able to identify a number of the mountain ranges, states, oceans, and Islands that I had learned in
school. It is very unique because it revolves and rotates on a specially designed mechanized cantilever arm. It
tilts 23.5 degrees just as the Earth does. It was a really fascinating experience and I thank my parents for this
chance to see Eartha.

Interview with Chipko Movement Leader - Sh Sunderlal Bahuguna
I am very fortunate to have Shri Sundarlal Bahugana as my great grand uncle. He is one of India’s most renowned
environmentalists and the leader of the ‘Chipko Movement’. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second
highest civilian honour, in 2009. This year when I read about deforestation in the Shiwalik range in the school Social
Studies book and our teacher told us about efforts to save the jungles, including the Chipko movement, I was all
excited to meet my great grand uncle and tell him about what I read.
I wish we could invite him to visit our school for all of us to meet him in person, but due to his health he is not allowed
to travel much anymore and so I decided to ask a few questions on behalf of all my friends & teachers in Lotus Valley.
Before we start, you must know a few things about my Nanaji. As a person, he is a very humble human being and a
great example of ‘simple living & great thinking’. I have always seen him in very simple clothes, he always eats very
simple food and does not believe in any unnecessary expenditure, gifting or consumption. Like always when I went to
meet him, he was dressed in simple white clothes. He insisted on climbing up a floor even at an age of 90 so that we
could all sit comfortably and talk.
Here are the five questions I asked and his answers:
Q.1 Nanaji, as a child did you always want to become an environmentalist?
Nanaji: I only know that when we were young, most children wanted to find good paying jobs with Britishers when
they grew up. But my friends and I did not want to work for the British. I wanted to free India from the Britishers and
be part of the Swaraj Movement. I was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi from very early years of growing up.
Q.2 Did your parents support your decision of joining the freedom movement?
Nanaji: No, but I was dedicated to the cause. And when you are dedicated and work hard, parents support you.
Q3. Can you tell us about Chipko movement?
Nanaji: Chipko Movement changed the way we looked at trees. For Government trees were all about commercials.
Government’s slogan was:
Kya hain jungle ke upkaar; lissa, lakdi aur vyapar.
(What do the forests bear; Resin, Timbre & Foreign Exchange Trade)
Chipko Andolan said trees are all about Life. Our slogan was:
Kya hain jungle ke upkaar; mitti, paani or beyar,
Mitti, paani or beyar; zinda rahne ke adhaar.
(Trees give us soil, water and air. And these three form the basis of living).
Q3. You have always been very fit. What can we do for our health?
Nanaji: To stay fit, you should adopt a simple life.
1. Eat simple vegetarian food.
2. Exercise. Walk a lot. Breathe early morning fresh air.
3. Work hard. Try and do most of your work on your own.
Q4. What can we kids do for our environment?
Nanaji: There is only one thing that you should do for your environment’s health. LEAD A SIMPLE LIFESTYLE.
Change your lifestyle. Simplify it. Use fewer and fewer things. As consumption decreases pressure on Mother Earth will
also decrease. You only need two pair of clothes to live, don’t you? Then why buy so many dresses. Don’t buy too
many clothes and you will save trees. Don’t eat non-vegetarian food and you will help conserve animals and wildlife.
Take care of your health and eat simple food.
Q5. Can you please share a message for my friends and teachers at Lotus Valley School?
Nanaji: I would encourage all of you to do two things:
1. Adopt a simple lifestyle.
2. Always speak the truth.
You will realise that doing these two things is not that easy, but simplicity and truth will make you truly happy.

Dear Anita,
I really liked the different craft activities being taking place for the pre-primary students. Their work can be
displayed in an exhibition at the Open House. The Ice- breaking activities also seemed quite interesting
and fun. I am sure the children must have become good friends now.
Really happy to see book day being celebrated and the emphasis being given to promoting books and
reading in this age of kindles, tablets and IPads. The children need to appreciate the joy of reading actual
books.
The NDTV and TOI initiatives would be a great platform for the school and the students, I am glad that
you decided to be a part of the same.
Keep up the good work

Dear Maám,
As this academic year has come to an end we would like to Thank you and the very
dedicated and wonderful teachers of our children -Karl Sidhwa {IX Aravalis) and Freya
Sidhwa {VII Yamuna). Teachers are probably the most underrated yet the most powerful
professionals in the whole world. Their work has a long term impact on not just the lives
of the children they teach, but on society as a whole. They have the power to shape
generations, impact minds and make the world a better place. Being a teacher before I
know that a little word of appreciation helps one to strive to do better and also suggests
that we are doing good.
We have had a wonderful year with LVIS Gurgoan and are extremely happy with the way
the teachers have made our children comfortable and happy individuals in the past year.
All their teachers have been very approachable and their feedback has helped us and our
children to shape up well during the course of the year.
For Karl his class teacher (Anuradha Rana) has helped him blossom and encouraged him
to believe in himself and we as parents have seen the positive impact she has had over
Karl. She has been a wonderful guide to him throughout Class IX.
All the teachers who have taught him - Neha Maam (English). Suman Maam
(Hindi) Niharika maam, Shruti maam, Anuradha Maam (Science0, Pallavi maam,
Surbhi maam, Gauri Maam, (Social Science), Ayushi maam (FIT) we wish to Thank each
one of them for the love, care and support they have shown to Karl.
For Freya her class teacher (Surbhi Jain) too has handled her so well that she is happy
and never wants to miss school. She has supported her and helped her to bloom more in
her academic and non-academic classes.
We would like to specially mention - Beena Maam (HIndi) who knew that Freya has a
mental block regarding Hindi and had trouble coping with her subject. However, we are
proud that she has overcome the hesitation and not averse to Hindi anymore and has
improved manifolds in her subject.
Priyadarshini Maam- for the constant inspiration that she has given Freya through her very
interesting class discussions and letting her speak her mind during the discussions.
Vaishali Maam- for her patience in teaching her math and clearing all her doubts at any
given time.
Shruti Maam- For the endless science facts and findings which we get to hear
through Freya.
