P R I M A R Y S C H O O L MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT Supporting Advocacy Action Through the 1000 Books Donation Being in an IB environment, students are encouraged to learn and contribute not only to their well-being and community but also to society as a whole. MNC's recent collaboration with SBR supported this value and encouraged action from students. Sharing is truly caring, and students were empowered to share something that makes a great impact in our society: books. The event,1000 book donation, was held by MNC during November 2023 through Sekolah Bogor Raya. Students are showing their act of participation and advocacy through caring for others who may enjoy their personal book favorites. The books have been well-curated by the students before being donated and both SBR and MNC surely cannot wait to distribute them, contributing in a growth of knowledge and love of reading. 5 At the climax of the event on November 21st, 2023, MNC with SBR had performances in the third building while the Primary School Student Librarians from collected books from other students attending the event. The total number of book collected on that day reached 715, and end with 1,200 books on November 31! Having the students actively involved with books and collecting the donations was a meaningful act that will empower them to inspire others to love books and being literate. (YT) Some students have been highlighted due to their high generosity in donating plenty of books, two of whom happen to be student librarians too. They are Wijanging Ngelmu and Jawaher. P R I M A R Y S C H O O L MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT Embrace the Learning Adventure: The Value of Agility In the bustling DSA of Sekolah Bogor Raya, the air was filled with excitement as students gathered for another special assembly focusing on agility. Ibu Ria, the PS Vice Principal, took the stage with Pak Ade as the MC, emphasizing the importance of agility not just in physical activities, but also in the way students approach their learning journey. "What does agility mean to you?" A sea of hands shot up and enthusiastic voices filled the auditorium where each student was eager to contribute their interpretation of agility. The students shared their perspectives and came up with the conclusion that agility is an ability to learn, adapt to new situations, try new things, make friends, know what are the things that need to be improved, and try to find a way or strategy to remove the barriers. The genuine interest in understanding and embracing the concept of agility has turned a simple question into a spirited dialogue during the assembly. The students embarked on a thoughtful exploration to connect the IB Learner Profile with the concept of agility. Students from various grade levels engaged in discussions and it was lovely to hear words such as “reflective”, “risk taker”, or “open minded” come out while brainstorming ways in which the attributes of the IB Learner Profile align with the value of agility. They recognized that an agile learner embodies the characteristics of an inquirer who is always curious and ready to adapt to new challenges, a thinker who approaches problems creatively, and a communicator capable of expressing ideas flexibly. 6 Vol.5 / Nov-Dec 2023 Witnessing some of the live performances such as the Gamelan, poetry reading, and cheerleading have also given the students a showcase of the journey of being agile, both physically and mentally. During the performances, the performers captivated the young audience with short tales of their own experiences and the role agility played in their success. They highlighted how agility goes beyond physical flexibility, extending to mental adaptability, and the ability to embrace change. From the performers, they have learned that being agile means being a lifelong learner who will always grow and adapt to any kind of challenging situation. Being agile means accepting that it is human to make mistakes and to learn from them. We have to keep an open mind and be willing to adapt. This assembly about agility has encouraged the students to see challenges as opportunities for growth, emphasizing that being agile allows them to navigate the twists and turns of their academic journey with resilience and creativity. (WA) Let’s embrace our learning adventure!

P R I M A R Y S C H O O L CLASS AT A GLANCE Grade 1 Semester 1 Academic Year 2023-2024 has ended very quickly. The new year 2024 brings new challenges, new opportunities, and new hopes in the air. In the process of ending semester 1, the 1st graders at Sekolah Bogor Raya were embracing fun-tastic learning adventures through the theme 3, “Where We are in Place and Time.” Grade 1 students were exploring types of houses, traditional houses, and how houses are different nowadays. They started the amazing learning experience by exploring the rooms in the house through a virtual tour and shared their ideas on the “See, Think, Wonder” chart. Furthermore, the students worked in groups to sort the things that they can see in each room. By having this activity, the students were gaining more understanding to complete their project in describing their favorite room in the house. Another energizing learning experience to have in this theme is learning about traditional houses in Indonesia by directly visiting one of our well-known places in Jakarta, “Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII)”. In this excursion event, students had a real experience of seeing the traditional houses in Indonesia, such as the Balinese house and Joglo house. Although the sun shone brightly, the students were still eager to explore the material that built the house, the rooms in each house, and the parts of the building itself. This is one way the students demonstrated agility during the fun-tastic activity. The 1st Graders Adventure in Agile Learning World 9 As the last topic to learn in theme 3, the students met Ibu Debbie, a passionate architect, to learn about how houses are different nowadays. We also discussed different types of houses and houses in the future. In addition, the students tried to build a house from Legos and shared their ideas about the house they made. P R I M A R Y S C H O O L CLASS AT A GLANCE “Where Dreams Take Flight, Through Child’s Artistic Light”. Whether it be through the stroke of a brush, the harmony of notes, or the dance of words on a page like a poem, art is a medium to share your feelings. Under the transdisciplinary theme “How We Express Ourselves”, art was the big idea or topic that the grade 3 students learned. Art is around us in different forms and we use it to express our ideas, feelings, or even emotions. In this unit, they learned more about different types of art, how people express their ideas, feelings, and emotions through art, and last but not least about how we respond to the artworks. 11 Young Artists Unleashed: A Vibrant Showcase of Creative Brilliance at Grade 3 Art Exhibition Grade 3 As the journey of the grade 3 students’ learning process, we invited Ibu Christina, our Visual Art Primary teachers and “Teater Pager” to share about the elements of art and how we can express our feelings through visual art and acting. The students had the opportunity to use their creativity to draw an object from the draft design. They also learned about acting, and then continued by watching a pantomime performance by “Teater Pager” to tell us that miming can tell a story. They also asked some of the students to join them in acting based on their chosen scenario. It was very fun and the students really enjoyed it. Lastly, we invited Ibu Henny Ang to share about how people produce and respond to artwork. Students were very excited when Bu Henny showed some of the SBR Musical Productions such as ‘Laskar Pelangi’, ‘Hercules’, and ‘The Symphony of Soul’. They understood that in every performance there is always a process and preparation behind it. They learned to listen closely to other’s perspectives and always respond to art respectfully. As part of the project, we closed this theme by having an art exhibition. They had the freedom to choose the performance that they wanted to show in front of their parents, what they are interested in and an expert on. They chose to do dancing, drama, singing, reading poems, playing piano, playing drums, and wushu. At the closing performance of the art exhibition, we had Tobelo dancing and we invited parents to join us. Grade 3 students, parents, and teachers were dancing. Everybody was so happy and took it as a refreshing moment to gather together. Besides the performance, the parents are also invited to see students’ artwork which is a clay sculpture using the cubism and pop art style. “What a wonderful performance!” said one of the grade 3 parents. Congratulations, grade 3! Everyone enjoyed the process and the result when they learned to be resilient, risk-takers as well as communicators in this theme. ... P R I M A R Y S C H O O L CLASS AT A GLANCE ... Students were so reflective of their abilities and decided what performance they wanted to show in front of their friends, teachers, and also parents. Although we had a packed schedule for practicing, the students enjoyed the process and showed their effort to give their best for the audience during the Art Exhibition. They showed their commitment to preparing their exhibition. Sometimes they encounter challenges such as memorizing texts for singing, difficult movements in dancing, texts and drama expressions that must be appropriate but they remember that it has become part of the process of preparing for a performance. They reflect and show resilience by trying to practice again until they succeed. For some students, this may be something new, but with enthusiasm and self-confidence, they can demonstrate it well. Finally, they can shine on their way. (SD) 12 Vol.5 / Nov-Dec 2023 Grade 4 The Art of Taking Away Knowledge and Enhancing Agility Theme 4, "How the World Works," engages students in an exploration of Earth's transformation processes and the potential disasters caused by these changes. Through this theme, students learned natural phenomena like earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and other geological events that can impact the planet and human civilization. Students learned to analyze the safety procedures and develop a proactive approach to disaster mitigation. There were some activities we did in the classroom that supported our learning experiences in this theme. The students have the opportunity to investigate various types of rocks and minerals at the Science and Mineral Laboratory, Institute Pertanian Bogor. In this precious moment, they became more knowledgeable that rocks are made up of different minerals, broken pieces of crystals, or broken pieces of rocks. Some rocks are made of the shells of onceliving animals, or compressed pieces of plants. Furthermore, they also have sessions to listen to some experts about the tectonic movements. How do they contribute to the changing of the earth's surface. They also learned about types of soils and their compositions. What an experience we got from this visit, students learned to appreciate the interconnectedness of geological processes. ... P R I M A R Y S C H O O L CLASS AT A GLANCE Bogor is located in West Java, Indonesia. As a part of the IndoAustralian plates, Bogor is amidst the mountains and hills. Some of the famous mountains are Gunung Salak, Gunung Gede, and Pangrango. Bogor is also relatively close to the beach along the southern coast of Java, Pelabuhan Ratu. Besides, Bogor is also famous as a city of rain. Therefore, there are some natural phenomena and potential disasters Bogor people need to be aware of such as landslides, volcano eruptions, and earthquakes. Two mountain guard officers were invited to the school to deepen the study of one of the potential disasters in Bogor, volcano eruption. A thank you to these heroic professional mountain guard officers who gathered the data from their daily observations. It will help us to identify the potential volcanic eruption disaster. Besides, we surely also need to be aware of other potential and frequent disasters such as floods, winds, and landslides. 13 Preparing for the first written final exam needs mental agility. Moreover, maintaining a positive and resilient mindset is crucial, allowing students to manage stress, stay focused, and swiftly adapt to unexpected challenges. Grade 4 students are facing the first written exam test this semester. This new system requires the need to adapt and respond well. Alarik, Ugo, and Shien did their best in preparing for the Language Arts exam on the first day. They felt nervous since they assumed that the test would be so hard, but in fact, it was not as severe as they thought. In class activity, grade 4 students also did a Drawing relay. This engaging drawing relay is adding further sketches based on their friends' contributions. As we draw to a close on this theme exploring "How the World Works," students have embarked on a profound journey filled with numerous learning experiences and meaningful insights. P R I M A R Y S C H O O L CLASS AT A GLANCE Under the transdisciplinary theme, “How the World Works”, Grade 5 students explored the changes in natural materials that could benefit and challenge humans’ lives. As part of learning, students examined how the materials around them change, including the processes of melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, and deposition. Grade 5 experimented with each process to experience and witness how the properties and materials naturally change. They also connected these change processes to their daily lives because the changes of matter happen frequently in our daily lives. Besides, Grade 5 also discussed the dangers of using chemical substances. As an alternative, students explored how natural materials could be a safer alternative to daily products. They discovered that nature provides benefits for humans and that there are ways to benefit from what nature has provided. This learning aims to increase students’ awareness about ecofriendly products and lifestyles, which can be one of the solutions to environmental issues. Grade 5 The Agility of Young Scientists 14 In this theme, Grade 5 students also discussed agility in the learning context. According to Disprz.ai, agility in learning covers mental agility, people agility, change agility, result agility, and self-awareness. One of the big events for Grade 5 was the science fair, and throughout the preparation process, Grade 5 students applied agility in learning. The students had to exhibit and showcase the eco-friendly products they produced and created at the science fair. During the preparation process, the students faced challenges such as failure in the trial process. The products they created might burn, be too thick, or have a different consistency. The mental agility was needed for them to stay afloat and try again. Change agility and result agility were also needed because of the failure that students had required them to adapt and adjust the formula of the ingredients and the making process. The ability to stay calm and positive when facing challenges and changes were the main traits they needed to have to be able to strive. Since the science fair is a group project, knowing strengths and weaknesses could help the students to know what they could contribute to the team. Vol.5 / Nov-Dec 2023 During the D-day of the science fair, people's agility was also needed, especially communication skills. The students must adjust how they presented their products based on the audience. One of Grade 5 students, Severine, said, “The way I presented my product was different from when I explained it to Grade 3 & 4 students and our parents. I had to adjust the vocabulary, tone, and speed.” As this theme and this semester are over, Grade 5 students have learned and obtained experience. We hope the knowledge and experience that they gained would be useful for themselves and their surroundings. To close this year, Grade 5 students would like to say “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!” (GDM) Science experiment Behind the scenes of Science Fair
