FOREWORD Vol.9 / APRIL 2022
From SBR's Curriculum Coordinator
Dear Students, Staff, and Families,
What an incredible month we had in April!
As part of our community outreach program, we wanted to look at different ways to create a positive
culture at the school related to diversity and inclusion, and one of the ways we were able to recently do
that was to look at how we celebrate a national hero, Raden Adjeng Kartini, who was instrumental in
progressing women’s rights, especially in education. We did this in tandem with Women’s History
Month, and International Women’s Day.
We introduced a whole school, 2 month long project where we looked at what equality meant in the
context of our school and the community, and how it aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal #4
of equality in education with the goal to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote
lifelong learning opportunities for all."
At each level, students were having deeper discussions and discoveries about what equality and
inclusive education means in the context of their experiences at school, at home, and in the greater
community.
Within the school, we are fortunate to be able to offer international curriculums that share these values,
and we are proud to also support passionate groups of students who get involved in activities such as
Model United Nations (MUN), debate and speech clubs, as well as their own student-led clubs and
businesses catering to equal rights and empowerment. These students also work closely with other
organizations such as Best Buddies, an organization supporting those with intellectual and
developmental disabilities (IDD), and Jakarta Swift wheelchair basketball club. All these activities help
speak to the values of empathy and equality that we hold at the school.
How we as a school approach these issues, and design programs around them to be able to incorporate
the lessons learned not only in the instructional area, but have it impact the school culture and the rest
of the community is the next step that we are working towards. As the above initiative was a newer way
for us to approach these issues, we will be taking the feedback from the students, teachers and
administration who all had a part in the planning and execution of this initiative to see how we can
improve upon it and future initiatives to also inspire additional action within the community and
Indonesia at large.
In the same spirit of giving back to the community, we also held our annual Tali Kasih event at the end of
the month. This is a special event for us at SBR as we are able to take time to appreciate everything that
our supporting staff do to help the school remain a safe, secure, and welcoming place for our students to
learn and grow. Without our team of dedicated maintenance staff, security, cleaning crew, and auxiliary
personnel, we would not be able to provide the high quality of education and learning that we expect
here at Sekolah Bogor Raya, and for that we are thankful to have each and every one of them as part of
our team.
There are many more events and activities planned as we finalize this term, and the school year, with
SBR's 27th anniversary event, our end of year celebrations, upcoming graduations and commencements,
and our virtual SBR Walk, so please be on the lookout for more information on these events soon.
As always, thank you once again for helping us all learn and grow as a community!
Thank you and regards,
Benedict Rinne

Time flies so fast!
It’s almost the end of theme 4, K1s! This theme is
joyful because all the K1 students are able to come
to school and play together with their friends. They
learn about the weather, kinds of activities during
day and night, and the tools to protect their bodies
from different types of weather.
Now, K1 students are busy learning and playing during classroom sessions. They all have the chance to play
indoors and outdoors. The outdoor play leaves kids with more advanced motor skills, including coordination,
balance, and agility. Kids who play outside are more likely to move in ways that challenge their muscles, bones,
and physical endurance. When children are outside, they have the space to run, walk, jump, swing and throw.
Playground activities, like swinging, have many physical benefits for kids. Being outdoors also lets them
explore the world from a different perspective.
Let’s continue learning through our play sessions!

“Where We Are in Place and Time”, K3
Students developed an understanding
that public places can play an important
role in them. Students learned not only in
the classroom but also had a virtual
excursion to “Galeri Nasional Indonesia”
through a panoramic site map.
They also explored public places around them, such as schools, hospitals,
banks, and supermarkets. For this theme, we invited our school's principal and
a doctor to share their experiences and knowledge. The event was conducted
online and offline on Friday, 22 April 2022. Students discovered what rules are
applied in public places and learned the functions of public places. Through
these activities, they became communicators as they actively asked questions
and shared opinions during discussions. They were totally excited to have this
activity.
We hope the learning experiences we have will be meaningful and inspiring,
especially for K3 students. Stay safe and healthy, K3 Families!

PRIMARY SCHOOL HIGHLIGHT
Giving Everyone an Equal Chance
We are living in a very diverse world. We value diversity amongst us and expect everyone to be treated with
respect. Nowadays, we see groups of people fighting for equality. How important is it, for us as educators, to
teach students about equality?
Equality is one of the bigger concepts that need to be taught at school. The reason is that at this stage, a
child's mind is very pliable and whatever they learn at this age, will have a strong impact on their actions in
the future. Therefore, as an educator, we should instill the value or concept to be a good human as well as
help them develop their academic performance. Other resources mentioned that teaching equality is also
necessary to make sure that students are at least getting the same base level of attention, resources, and
opportunities. Equality in education is necessary for students so that each learner has the same opportunities
and positive educational outcomes.
Sekolah Bogor Raya holds several values that should be developed, understood, and implemented by students
in their daily lives; Among them is Equality. We hope that SBR students are able to show equality by treating
everyone fairly regardless of their background, race, gender identity, or religion and by being impartial in their
relationships and celebrating differences
To introduce and promote this value, we have an activity called “Giving Everyone Equal Chance”. This is a
monthly activity that is held every circle time from Grade 1 up to Grade 6. From this activity, we hope that the
students are able to understand the meaning, the importance of equality in life, and how to respond if the
students see something that is not equal in their life.
As a closing, we also celebrated Kartini's Day together on April 21st.Kartini is known as someone who fought
for equality in education for women. Hopefully, by having this series of events, students are able to equip
themselves with sufficient knowledge about equality and know what they can do to make this world a place
that gives people the same opportunities based on their needs.

Grade 5 Junior World Science Fair:
An exploration of natural-eco friendly products, heading to a sustainable living
The transdisciplinary theme, How The World Works, in Grade 5 is aiming to sharpen the students' sense
of science. The students did some inquiry into the natural world and its law, how humans use their
understanding of scientific principles and the impact of scientific and technological advances on society
and on the environment. Furthermore, we designed learning activities and experiences that can develop
their personal skills and learner profiles in order to support the big idea of the learning in this topic,
under the central idea of “Natural materials can undergo changes that may provide challenges and
benefits for society and the environment.”
There are four Approaches to Learning Skills we developed
in this theme; thinking skills, research skills, communication
skills, and social skills. The final project of the theme should
cover all of those skills. Then, what is the final project for
this year in How The World Works? This year, we
challenged the students to make a natural product based on
scientific methods and presented it at the Grade 5 Junior
World Science Fair. The product should be able to
overcome a daily life problem that the students choose.
Beforehand, the students have been equipped with
scientific knowledge by inviting expert visits as well as
sharing sessions with the previous grade 5 students.
Overall, the students experienced seven steps of the scientific process in
order to produce the final product. It starts by finding a problem.
Students should be aware of their surroundings and think about what
problem they want to solve. As an example, Phillip realized that
mosquitos often bite him and her sister at night. The irritating feeling of
being bitten by mosquitos inspired him to make a mosquito repellant for
the project. Once they have found the problem, they may go to the next
step: questions. The second step is where students jot down all of the
questions they have in mind related to the problem. For example, Phillip
asked himself: which materials best repel the mosquitoes, basil leaves
extract, or apple cider vinegar? The next step is research where students
need to find information related to their experiment topic.
...

...
The aim is to aid the students with the basic knowledge about their chosen experiment topic. Making
hypotheses happens next and the students have to make their scientific guesses. In Phillip's case, he
made the hypothesis this way: “If I spray both of my mosquito repellents, the basil extract repellent will
be more effective than the apple cider vinegar repellent.” The next step is the most crucial step:
experiment and record the data. Students have to do their experiments, prepare their materials, and
record the data. Finally, by analyzing the data they got, they can draw a conclusion that answers their
questions and proves their hypotheses from before.
The teacher was astounded by the ingenuity of the fifth-grade children. They've created a slew of
innovative natural items while adhering to scientific procedures to a tee. Natural soap, natural scent,
scrub, plant and fruit-based coloring, candles, hand sanitizer, eco-lava lamp, and play dough are some of
their products (SN).

Be a Digital SuperHero!
One of our experts, Pak Banyumurti, on the 26 th of April 2022, did a sharing session about Digital Citizenship,
entitled “Be a digital Superhero!”. The sharing session was so interactive! It was clear that students really enjoyed
the presentation by how active they were in the brainstorming session. The brainstorming session showed us
that:
1.The students are already exposed to many platforms of social media.
2.Many students reported having been exposed to bullying. Either they were bullied, seen bullying, or read
about someone being bullied.
3.We are all exposed to the world as we have a digital footprint. People are judging us based on our digital

Natural Phenomena, Miracles of the Earth
It was a fun session that we had with Ibu Avivah Yamani, an
Astronomy Communicator. As we are learning the theme of
How the World Works, Ibu Vivi explained a lot about natural
phenomena, such as day and night, seasons, moon phases, solar
eclipses, lunar eclipses and solar flares. She explained it in detail
and thoroughly so it was easy for us to understand about those
phenomenons and the process of how it happens. Besides
sharing the knowledge, Ibu Vivi also gave some tips on how to
watch the eclipse safely and the upcoming eclipse that will
happen in April 2023.

The Q&A session stimulated our curiosity and inspired us to learn more about how to predict natural phenomena.
It was interesting to find out facts about how natural phenomena relate to the sun, moon and earth system. It was
a good reminder that everything that is happening in the universe can bring positive and negative impacts to our
environment. Humans need to be aware of what happens on earth. Thank you, Ibu Vivi! (WA)

This month, grade 1 students learned
about equality. Equality is one of the
important values to be shared with the
students in the early years. The teachers
introduced this value through some
videos and storybooks, so it will be
easier for the students to grasp the
concept of equality.

April is going to be a memorable month for our students. During this month, all students have been exploring
more about equality. They learned how equality can ensure that every individual has an equal opportunity to
make the most of their lives and talents. To dig into their understanding of equality, we shared some videos
which provided more information and examples of equality problems happening in our world nowadays.
Afterward, we had a class discussion about their opinion on the equality issues that might still happen in our
environment. We also got the opportunity to talk more about equality when celebrating Kartini Day. The
students can identify the kinds of inequality that happened during Kartini’s time when they learned about
Kartini’s biography. It was a great moment for the students to raise their awareness about equality. In
commemoration of Kartini’s struggle for equality, the students also drew a picture of a woman who inspired

could spend at school, from doing the
assignments to playing together. Although they
are so excited about meeting their friends and
teachers, they would always keep the health

glad they are to come back to school.
Now, grade 3 is in the middle of theme 6 underlying the

students are learning about beliefs and cultures. They are
going to develop their understanding of how cultures and
beliefs affect our society and how people have different
actions to respond to their surroundings. Furthermore,

The Grade 4 students have been exploring equality for the past few
weeks. They have realized that in some parts of the world, children
are not experiencing the same educational opportunities as we are in
Sekolah Bogor Raya. In some countries, boys and girls have different
opportunities to go to school, while in other places, children don’t
even have a classroom or a good school building.
The students voiced their concerns and opinions during our
discussions. Everyone believed that young children deserve a fair
chance in education, as we all know that education is the window to
many experiences. It was really wonderful to see the Grade 4
students being aware of the inequality that is happening around the
world. Let’s make it happen, education is for everyone!

How Do We Teach the Concept of Equality to Our Students?
This essay is going to discuss how teachers in
Grade 5 educated their students about equality.
This is because equality is a vital topic that needs
to be introduced from childhood. Students need
to know that equality is something that we are still
struggling with even today. Teaching equality to
the students can give a better understanding of
why equality is supposed to be our norm.
The teachers in grade 5 did various activities on how to introduce the concept of equality. Firstly, we
delivered a Get Epic story about how a boy can make a difference in an unequal world. Through this activity,
we hoped the students grasped the meaning of equality. Secondly, we asked the students to draw children’s
rights. There are various interesting examples the students gave us, such as going to school from Sastri,
hugging mom from Elaine, and playing with friend from Rafa. This activity encouraged the students to
understand their rights as a child.
Finally, we showed the students an experimental Introducing the concept of equality to grade 5 students
video about gender inequality. The video was about
three pairs of boys and girls who did the same job but
got paid unequally because of their gender. Then we
asked the students how they feel about it. It turned
out all of the students were against the discrimination
shown in the video. They believe that boys and girls
should be valued based on their skills and workload,
not gender. What a great thought, isn’t it?
In conclusion, we hope that the three activities we did
to penetrate the concept of equality gave a deeper
meaning to equality. As a result, we will have a more
equality-aware young generation in the future (SN).

We Believe in Equality for Everyone
We have all heard that we should treat everyone Sharing our thoughts about equality
equally. Equality makes our life more meaningful. This
April, we had our time to celebrate Equality as one of the
school values of Sekolah Bogor Raya. We opened the
sessions by having a lot of discussions about how
everyone should have equal opportunities in life, such as
fulfilling the educational needs of the children, medicine
for every family, and how no one should be treated
unfairly. Equality is important because it ensures that
everyone has the same chance as everyone else, and no
one should be discriminated against.
Another lesson we can learn is how to implement Let’s discuss, think, feel and reflect on how to implement the
equality in our lives. Equality is caring, respect, and equality
being an open-minded person. Equality is also about
empathy. We need to cultivate our sense of empathy for
others. Through empathy, other people can be treated
equally. Through empathy, human rights can be fulfilled
equally. As children, we have a responsibility in
implementing equality in our daily life. We also
discussed in class how to make sure that we treat our
friends equally. It was a thoughtful sharing session while
doing our own reflection on the importance of kindness.
Equality can only be achieved through conscious
thoughts and kindful feelings towards others. It is also
exactly what we need to grow as children.
Hopefully, we can apply these values not only as part of the lessons in school but as part of what it means to be a
human. Moving to our last theme, How the World Works, of course, there are many interesting stories that we
can share. See you soon in our next story. (WA)

Sight Seeing the World with SLC Globetrotter
During the pandemic, many of us were unable to go out traveling or have leisure time due to physical
restrictions. This may cause boredom and inconvenient feelings for the students. Therefore, SLC Globetrotter
was set as an alternative for the students to explore further about tourism and travel plans. Globetrotter is a
term for someone who travels widely around the world. In another word, they are travelers who are traveling
across the world.
The Globetrotter Club engages students’ eagerness
to discover information about a particular area, city,
province, or even a country. This information
includes local access to transportation, culinary,
historical locations, well-known tourist attractions,
and more. Sightseeing the local and global
uniqueness as well as promoting an understanding
of socio-culture, respect, and appreciation. Students
have the opportunity to join virtual tours/travel and
interactively explain their travel experiences
through personal presentations or videos.
Although not everyone likes to travel, there are
people who find meaning and joy in traveling. What
makes traveling meaningful? Whenever we are
traveling, we meet new people, cultures, experience
things for the first time, broaden our horizons and
gain new perspectives. While we anticipate our next
trip, Globetrotter SLC is meant to create an
opportunity for students to discover various
destinations alongside its culture.

THE YOGA CLUB
BY : SELINA & NINIEK
As the pandemic continues to go on and hinder us in doing the things
that we like, the situation also increases stress. Yoga, an ancient
practice that originated in India, focuses on movement, meditation
and breathing. Regular practice of yoga can promote endurance,
strength, and flexibility.
Once a week yoga club does an online yoga practice session. During
the session, we do not only develop our strengths, but also our minds
by practicing meditation. Each session lasts for about 30 to 40 minutes
which is designed to gradually increase in difficulty. Despite the
difficulties, we manage to continuously show up on our mat and get
the benefit of yoga.
Taking yoga class was something I did not plan to do. At first, I simply
wanted to join yoga because my mom told me that yoga can help me
with my back posture. However, yoga class is becoming something
that I have enjoyed doing throughout this year. Yoga has become my
stress reliever, especially during the busy days and exam week. It helps
me to clear my mind and relax while also helping me to increase my
flexibility and improve my muscle strength. Overall, I have really
enjoyed my yoga class with Ibu Niniek :D
CHECKPOINT FROM HOME FOR MAY 2022 EXAM SERIES
Cambridge Checkpoint is an international diagnostic test which
measures the students' progress of their ESL, mathematics and science
studies. This examination is used to see the students’ readiness before
they take a higher curriculum later, which is the Cambridge IGCSE. The
Grade 8 students will usually take their test at school.
Due to the pandemic, the Checkpoint examination was again conducted
from home. The test was conducted from the 19th to the 21st of April,
with participants from all three of the Grade 8 classes.
On each examination day, the exam papers were picked up from school
and returned back at the end of the day. At home, the students did their
papers under the supervision of the invigilator through the Zoom
platform. In preparation for this examination, the students joined some
extra classes, doing the past paper reviews in class, and also taking the
Mock Tests.

Though the examination procedures are quite different from what they usually had, the examination ran
really well. We would like to thank all the teachers for their hard work in preparing the Grade 8 students.
We would like to also thank the parents for the support which makes this examination run smoothly. We
are proud of the candidates, who are all passionate and want to know their strengths and areas of
improvement through this test. Congratulations to all Checkpoint candidates this year! (TDS)
DP INSIGHT
This was an unusual term in many ways for our IB Diploma
programme students. In normal years, this term would be filled
with exam prep for the final IB exam. However, due to the
cancellation of exams for the grade 12 batch this year, we were
able to use the time this term for other activities. After the mock
exams were conducted the DP 2 students, now somewhat free of
the mental burden of exams, applied themselves to preparing their
CAS exhibition, TOK conference, and the Visual Arts exhibition.
The first of these events was the Visual arts exhibition which took
place on the 26th of April. Under the able guidance of Mr. Ardiles
Septuaginta Sopakuwa, the students showcased their
extraordinary work to the school community. Their creativity,
depth of thought, and passion for their chosen themes was very
satisfying to observe.
The DP1 students have been busy this term as well with more of their
IA proposals being approved. They are now well on their way to
becoming independent learners and thinkers. Observing their seniors’
efforts bear fruit also provided them some much needed motivation to
work on their own projects. In the weeks after the Lebaran break, they
will be working on completing some of their first IB assessments such as
the TOK exhibition and the language A oral assessments. With the
restrictions on outings being lifted we are also seeing some field trips
being planned. Three students - Karina, Banyu and Rakyan - from the
Biology course went on a field trip to gather data about butterflies for
an extended essay project.
As always, our endeavor is to continue to provide exciting new learning
opportunities to our students and we look forward to the term ahead.

LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR PARENT
dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Priliawati, Sp.KK (Ibu Tri) is one of our PGK parents, and works as a
doctor. She enjoys listening to music and singing too. Her favorite movies are “Olympus
Has Fallen”, “Hunter Killer”, “Now You See Me”, and “London Has Fallen”.
Since she registered her daughter to Sekolah Bogor Raya during the pandemic, we would
like to share her stories, the experiences when guiding her child to be successful in online
home learning, and the beginning of in-person learning at school.
Facing the system of learning mostly through online is of course not easy to most
Playgroup and Kindergarten parents. The biggest challenge is finding the best strategies
for working parents including her. Her child is still 4 years old, and has not mastered
working with a laptop or the video conference application, Zoom. This includes their
helper at home who is also not familiar with using a computer or laptop.
If there is a technical problem such as with a bad internet
connection or accidentally clicking on something
incorrectly, it becomes a problem in guiding their helper
through phone calls. 10 minutes before online class
sessions begin, she has to remind and endure the helper
clicks on the Zoom link. Ibu Tri hopes that the full in-
person classes open soon and the virtual activity can be
formed as part of homeworks or ICT activities guided by
the teacher.
To support the learning process of her child, Ibu Tri manages her working schedule carefully. She does not take a
lot of scheduled working hours outside the house so she can still have some time to accompany her child learning.
Nevertheless, every day she makes time to help her child prepare for the next day’s lesson. Her everyday routine
after working hours is also checking the E-Learning padlet of her child, reading about the upcoming learning
materials, teaching her child to write time table, arranging the toolkit for upcoming lessons, arranging stationeries
that will be used accordingly, checking the evidences that need to be submitted to teacher, and re-arranging the
order of Zoom links in a simple way according to the schedule, so their helper and her child can click the link easily.
It is not always easy doing all those activities, because like with many children, her daughter sometimes prefers to
play instead of study. It takes more patience, especially if she feels tired and has just come back from the office.
These experiences help Ibu Tri to get used to handling her child and supporting her to learn from home. Whenever
she sees her daughter is not enthusiastic or uncooperative, she will give some time for her child until she is ready
and usually she gives some fun activities before learning such as playing, drawing or telling stories about what they
did that day. If the child is sleepy, she will let her daughter sleep first. Ibu Tri actively communicates with her
child’s teacher by asking things that she doesn’t understand about the lesson. This is very important to make her
child learn the lesson.
For her, education and the child’s development is very important, therefore she is eagerly putting her enthusiasm
in knowing and following the progress of her child’s learning at school and making her time to accompany her
daughter's learning from home in the middle of her busy working days as a medical practitioner.
Ibu Tri’s personal motto is “The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories”.
