FOREWORD Vol.8 / MARCH 2022

From SBR's Curriculum Coordinator

Dear Students, Staff, and Families,

What an exciting beginning to our last term of the year! We have been very
fortunate to be able to welcome back our students back on campus for learning
with the main surge of Omicron behind us. We have all enjoyed having the
students roaming the halls again, joining classes, and meeting their teachers and
peers.

This last term will see a whirlwind of activity for all. Our secondary students will be
going through their Cambridge and IBDP exams, and working on their TOK
(Theory of Knowledge) Conference. Some of our Primary students will have just
wrapped up their PYP exhibitions, and PGK will be enjoying more time exploring
and sharing ideas about their learning spaces.

And all of us are looking forward to our upcoming SBR anniversary, as well as
other important celebrations. One of these is Kartini Day, which celebrates her
championing of women's rights, and advocacy for their equal access to education.
This will be the capstone of a month-long celebration of Women's History month
where we as a school were fostering an understanding of inclusivity and equality
both within our campus, and our impact to the larger community. This is also
aligned with 2 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #4
and #5 which looks to promote inclusive and equitable education for all, and
equality and empowerment for women respectively.

As part of SBR's community service outreach program, we are continually looking
to see how we can have the greatest impact in the areas needed most. It has
been encouraging to see how our values have been reflected as we dove deeper
into how those values were being expressed and presented in the classrooms,
and how that learning was used by our students to demonstrate their
understanding of those values through the projects they undertook, the
underserved groups that they reached out to to support, and even by sharing
simple acts of kindness that they witnessed, or were a part of.

Finally, I would like to extend my appreciation to all who participated in sharing
their feedback on the recent survey sent out for our Vision, Mission, and Values
refresh. Your input on where you see us as a learning organization that
continuously works to improve and reflect on our own goals and beliefs is
immeasurably helpful. We will be analyzing results from the survey, as well as our
first ever focus group discussions held recently to help inform our school
improvement plans.
As always, thank you once again for helping us all learn and grow as a
community!

Benedict Emil Rinne

PYP IN ACTIONS Vol.8 / MARCH 2022
PRIMARY SCHOOL HIGHLIGHT

A Glimpse of the PYP Exhibition 2022

It's been a month since the end of the PYP Exhibition, but we still have a lot of interesting things to share. The
Who We Are theme has succeeded in inviting the 6th graders to truly dive into themselves, understand their
uniqueness and accept it as part of their lives. The journey to accept uniqueness, especially one's own
shortcomings, is not easy. At least, they are still trying to improve themselves daily.

As you know, various interesting topics were presented through the PYP Exhibition, such as the world of
visual arts, music, sports and singing. In addition, some of the students also raised topics about how to
overcome insecurity, how to think positively about themselves, how to manage emotions or ‘gifted’ talents,
the importance of effective communication and even the importance of mental health. One interesting thing
that we will discuss through this article is how some children chose topics related to the importance of mental
health in order to help them express themselves. One of the most memorable stories in the exhibition comes
from a child who had concerns about how bad experiences could affect emotional stability.

Cheryl sharing about the importance of mental health

She began her story by telling us about her anxiety that she might develop mental health problems due to bad
events that have happened in her life. If she could have it, so could everyone else. Unpleasant experiences can
affect people's emotions. In order to have a balanced life, she shared her coping skills to help her tolerate,
minimize and deal with stressful situations in life. It was a meaningful session when she was presenting her
journey on ZOOM. The Q&A session was more fruitful when someone questioned how she has managed
herself so far and how to deal with uncertain situations. Interestingly, she admitted that dealing with
unpleasant experiences is something that people will always face. Managing our stress can help us feel better
physically and psychologically and enable us to perform at our best. Mental health is not a common topic for
6th graders. Her courage to raise this issue has inspired us all to understand the importance of self-awareness
and self-acceptance. Thank you, Cheryl! (WA)

Grade 2 Met The Illustrator!

“Do what you love and love what you do”
“Find your passion and once you find it never give up to develop your skill on it”

In the middle of this theme 5, Grade 2 students
had a lot of fun activities! One of those activities
was having a great expert sharing session with an
illustrator to support their inquiry stages about
how illustration can support the story and make
the story easier to understands.

Met The Illustrator

On Friday, March 25, 2022, grade 2 students had a wonderful
expert talk with Ibu Christina Damastuti. Ibu Christina is one of
the visual art teachers in Sekolah Bogor Raya who is also an
illustrator. She explores and works in various forms of visual
arts such as illustration, cartoon, comic, design, photography,
sculpture, sketch, and painting. She shared that she found her
passion in visual art and seriously develops her drawing skills
even today.

Grade 2 students showed their enthusiasm during the
session. They were so excited to get tips on being a great
illustrator, finding inspiration, and how to develop a
story using a picture or illustration. Afterward, their
excitement exploded when Ibu Christina challenged
them to draw an illustration using the picture that
appeared on the story cube she had prepared. The
second graders not only showed their enthusiasm for
the illustration but also for a story related to that
drawing, which Ibu Christina challenged them to try.

At the end of the session, our second graders shared their stories and illustrations actively and confidently.
They couldn’t stop pressing the “raising hand” reactions in Zoom to share their illustration and story with Ibu
Christina and friends. It was a wonderful experience for them. Thank you Ibu Christina for this inspiring session.

Observers from Gunung Salak and Gunung Gede

The Grade 4 students had a great opportunity to
meet two mountain observers from Gunung Salak
and Gunung Gede, Bapak Nur Rokhman dan
Bapak Anton S. Tripambudi. Bapak Nur Rokhman
dan Bapak Anton worked as professionals at a
post that observed Gunung Salak and Gunung
Gede. Their role is to record the activities of the
mountains, observe the changes that happen in
the crater, to see if there is smoke or gas coming.
Bapak Anton dan Bapak Nuh Rokhman also has to
observe the seismograph to report the volcanic
activities to the local authority.

The purpose of having observers of active
volcanoes is to prepare for natural disasters such
as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. The
observers and the local government of certain
areas create mitigation plans, to reduce risks that
can occur when earthquakes happen. They
prepare the route to escape from the volcanic
eruption, all the vehicles in that area must be
ready and parked facing the road, the local police
officers prepare the streets not to be crowded or
to avoid traffic jams.

According to the mountain observers, there are no accurate ways to predict when a volcano will erupt.
What we can do is to observe the signs by using various devices and to observe directly to the mountain
ranges. Indonesia is surrounded by the belt known as the ring of fire. That’s why the government and the
people must be more careful and ready to face earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. (YK)

two science teachers from the SBR Secondary department, Ibu water?
Shinta and Ibu Endang for the expert sharing session. They
shared a lot of interesting things about science and also led a
simple experiment using a scientific method, related to the six
skills of a great scientist.

Students prepared all of the materials and tools needed, such as hot and cold water, sugar, a spoon
and also a stopwatch. They followed each step of the scientific method starting from asking
questions, making a hypothesis, doing experiments, recording the data and finally making a
conclusion. In the end, they were able to prove that sugar is dissolved in hot water faster than in cold
water

Curiosity kills cats but not humans. As the
experiment ended, students started to ask other
questions, such as “Does stirring the sugar make
it dissolve faster?” and “What if there is more
sugar in the hot water than in cold water, will the
sugar in the cold water dissolve faster?” They
started the first step of the scientific method
again. It seems that they now have become little
scientists and will probably conduct their own
experiments during the mid term break. water

the students’ attention. They were so active and
responsive during the sharing session. They had a
lot of fun during the experiment and also learnt
more about physical and chemical changes which
is the ongoing lesson of this unit of inquiry. (AS)

How We Express Ourselves Students home conference

There are so many ways to express ourselves and one of those ways
is by expressing our feelings, ideas, and emotions through a story. In
this theme 5, our grade 2 students had so much fun expressing their
feelings, emotions, and ideas through conferences and being book
illustrators and authors.

3-way conference At the beginning of theme 5, Grade 2 students expressed
themselves through a conference. They presented their theme 4
projects and experiences in front of their parents at home. This
home conference was a way to share their learning process,
overcome their struggles, as well appreciate the students’
efforts. After demonstrating their learning experiences at home,
our second graders also expressed more about their learning
experiences through the 3 way conference; Here they discussed
their learning with parents and teachers together.

Then, the grade 2 students began their journey to express their feelings, emotions, and ideas as book
creators in the Unit of Inquiry lesson. In this session, students learned about how to become a book
creator and find the relation between stories and pictures. The session is also supported by Visual Art
and Language Art class as well. In Visual Art class, the students learn more about the elements of art
and some drawing techniques to support them in creating their picture storybook. In Language Art,
they learned how to construct a story, onomatopoeia, and write a Haiku poem which was very
interesting. They learned to express their feelings through pictures and words.

students raise their agency in their learning process, especially when they have to decide the home appliance in
which they are going to analyze the energy transformation and present it to their friends and teachers.
Additionally, students’ agency can be clearly seen when they determine the success criteria of their assessment.
We were impressed to see the students’ enthusiasm to learn more about forms of energy by doing some
experiments during the zoom sessions. Grade 3 enjoys this theme a lot and is so ready for the challenges ahead.

and natural disasters. The students explored how volcanoes were
formed and the movements of tectonic plates that triggered natural
disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, and floods.

We are exploring this theme in various ways. The students conducted experiments that showed tectonic
plates movements by using crackers. It was really fun and very useful because the students had hands-on
experience with how tectonic plates move. The students also had the opportunity to meet two experts who
are professional observers from Gunung Salak and Gunung Gede. Not only that, we had a special guest from

Different Ways of Self Expression

We are here now in theme 5, How We Express Theme 5, it is all about language!
Ourselves. After the PYP Exhibition, it is time to
challenge ourselves in another way of expressing
our thoughts, through language. During the 3 way
conference, we had our reflection time to discuss
challenges, lessons learned, and what we got out
of the Exhibition. So, it was a good start to buckle
up and go on our next adventure. We have nailed
the several weeks of studying and sharing ways
to convey ideas and feelings through songs,
storybooks, poems, quotes, and even movies. It
was an interesting sharing session where we
could learn a lot about different types of spoken
and written language. We also have learned
about the power of the mind, how it affects
emotions and behaviors.

Additionally, we learned about different ways to convey our ideas through creative writing. We
define writing as one's self-expression achieved through meaningful written words. It is not easy
for us to put on thinking hats and reflect on our own feelings, or even to pick up some ideas to
incorporate into our narrative story when we are practicing our writing with the Writing Clinic
Project activity. We took our time to learn about how writers use their writing tips. We had our
discussion and reflection based on the writers’ experiences and how they have put their uniqueness
into words through writing. We also invited Kakak Nares to deepen our understanding. We have
learned that it takes creativity, writing skills, self-awareness, and strategy in applying the tips of
writing techniques to an interesting story. Besides that, we also have learned lots of writing
techniques when we were paraphrasing poems and writing fiction texts.

We are also preparing for our final activity, namely journaling which will challenge creative thinking
skills at another level. We have the freedom to choose our interests in any topic, or even to
continue our previous journey in the PYP Exhibition that we like. It is time to become a journaling
content creator. It needs honesty and perseverance to deeply think of personal preferences that we
think are good for our personal growth and life goals. So, we are getting ready to give our readers
something unforgettable to read. Until then, see you soon! (WA)

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWS Vol.8 / MARCH 2022

SLC Mobil Pintar

Mobil Pintar SLC is one place where students are able to conduct positive activities, particularly those related
to literacy interests. All the activities are initiated and organized by the students of Sekolah Bogor Raya. During
the last one year of the pandemic era, all activities have been structured using online methods. The Zoom
platform has been used to create interesting products, encouraging literacy interest in the society.

During Term 3 of this academic year, Mobil Pintar SLC’s membership increased significantly, where 10 new
recruits joined the force. It is surely a great sign showing that Mobil Pintar will be able to gain a better chance
to have more bright ideas. The first meeting has always been about introduction, where members share about
their various hobbies and interests with their peers. Mobil Pintar considers these rich differences in wealth and
the competitive advantage of the organization.

The regular meetings are conducted weekly, on Friday, to ensure the
sustainability of the organizational coordination in the middle of
students’ hectic days at school. The latest innovation applied in the
Mobil Pintar coordination meeting is the work-group division
method. Throughout the Zoom meeting, members will be divided into
three work-groups. They are free to discuss the product design and
any other related plan and strategies to realize and to introduce the
product to the society.

The heterogeneous composition of the meeting has been able to bring dynamic discussion avoiding the
monotonic result. Ultimately, all members have come to a decision to create a poster about the literacy world
and the related attractive games. The project’s timeline will be adjusted based on the members’ personal
availability and school’s academic timeline. (NK)

SLC Teaching English

Student Leadership Club (SLC) – Teaching English is a pretty fun SLC to
join in because it's good to know that we're helping out students who are
struggling with English. The teaching English SLC program, is basically
about a small community of students who's willing to help others with
their English, as most children may have English as their second
language.

Our main activity in this club is making small projects filled with simple
information on a basic English topic such as learning the past tense,
proper grammar, and others. My experience in this club was pretty fun:
getting to share knowledge with students who were struggling with
English. We just wanted to try and help a bit by making posters filled
with explanations and taking small actions that could impact a lot of
people.

Through SCL – Teaching English, I have demonstrated challenges that have been undertaken, and I've also

THE JAPANESE CLUB

Figure 1. Zoom Screenshoot about Jikoshokai HabitaThe Japanese Club is one of the student

a fun opportunity for students to broaden their
knowledge of Japanese in an informal environment and
socio-cultural trends. Furthermore, it allows students to
interact with other students who have a shared interest
in Japanese. Class starts with some basic phrases, like

such as Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. In daily life
in Japan, all three writing systems are seen
together in this crowded street in Japan.

When we visit Japan, sometimes we get confused
with this writing. Therefore, understanding the
basic hiragana will help us. Club members study
the hiragana step by step, by writing it manually.

FUTURE CAREER SEMINAR “THIS IS ME & MY FUTURE”

On Thursday, 10 March 2022, Secondary School held a
Future Career Seminar with the theme “This is Me & My
Future”. This seminar was open for SBR Secondary Parents
and Students from Grades 7 - 12, with expert guest speaker
Ibu Ina Liem. She is the CEO of Jurusanku.com, an author of
three books, a certified career consultant, and an expert
guest speaker related to educational issues in general and
pathways.

Students and their parents used to know a very limited
number of majors and, sometimes, are not in line with
students’ interest, unique potentials and personality traits.
One of the most famous misperceptions is that many
students avoid certain majors because they think those
majors lead to careers with ‘no future’. Meanwhile, according
to ibu Ina Liem, 65% of professions or careers in the future
have no name, just like some new professions famous among
us nowadays, but we never thought about it like youtubers,
influencers, hecker actuaries and many more. That is why
looking for certain expertise is one of the important
components that must be considered whatever major we
want to take in University, and with the growth mindset we
can actually see problems as opportunities to be solved, this
can lead us to a new profession with certain expertise
needed. By organizing this seminar, we hope SBR secondary
school students and parents get more references and eye
opening information to explore the possibility before making
a future plan together with the school. (DS)

ENGLISH CLASS FOR
PROGRAM PENGIMBASAN

In order to implement the ‘Pengimbasan Program’ from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and
Technology, SMP Bogor Raya, in collaboration with SMPN 3 Bogor, held an English Speaking Course. The
expat teachers from SBR became guest teachers and taught the grade 8 students of SMPN 3 Bogor on
Thursday, February 17th, 2022.

The English Speaking Class was aimed to practice students’ speaking skills, as well as to provide the
experience to interact with native speakers. Ibu Elis, a public relation of SMPN 3 Bogor, was excited to
welcome this program. “It will be a good chance for our students to develop their English speaking skills”.
Our teacher, Pak Novi, a representative from SBR, said that language plays an important role to enrich the
students’ insight, and he really hoped that the program would be beneficial for the students of SMPN 3, in
getting useful knowledge and to be able to practice speaking English with expat teachers from Sekolah Bogor
Raya.

This collaboration program was fully supported by the
expat teachers of Sekolah Bogor Raya. One of our
expat teachers, Pak Matthew from Canada, stated that
he had an interesting experience during teaching grades
8B and 8G. “I really enjoyed teaching the students from
SMPN 3, we had a great time during the session. Their
skills were quite good. So happy that I finally had an
experience teaching in such a big class”, he said, when
he was asked about how he felt about being a guest
teacher.

The grade 8 students of SMPN 3 Bogor who
participated in this program, also conveyed their
impressions after joining the English Speaking
Class. Quoted from the responses of the form
that had been distributed, most of the students
became more motivated to sharpen their
English skills. “I would learn more about English
materials because my ability to speak English is
limited and I would learn again to not shy away
from speaking English in public.”

The objective of the English Speaking Class was not only to provide benefits for students and teachers, but
also the relationship between Sekolah Bogor Raya and SMPN 3 Bogor recently became closer. These two
schools plan to hold other collaborative programs and invite other national schools to join.

A VISIT TO BASKETBALL GAME PRACTICE OF JAKARTA

SWIFT AT BUCKETLIST, BOGOR

On Sunday, 27th March 2022, Sekolah Bogor Raya was invited by the
Jakarta Swift Basketball Wheelchair organization, to watch their
athletes’ practice basketball game at Bucket List, a Basketball Museum in
Bogor. The event was actually part of Fundamental Training Camp 2022,
that was held by Jakarta Swift on 26th-27th March 2022 to celebrate its
third birthday, and Sekolah Bogor Raya was one of the sponsors for that
training camp. Jakarta Swift is the first Wheelchair Basketball
Organization in Jakarta, which has a community program to develop new
talents, spread awareness, and continue to expand the game in
Indonesia.

As the representatives of Sekolah Bogor Raya, six members
of Benevolence, one of the Student Leadership Clubs in
Secondary, got the precious opportunity to meet the
athletes and watch how the athletes practiced basketball in
high-spirit. The students experienced how the athletes
implemented some values like resilience, integrity, respect,
and teamwork in their play. At the end of the practice, the
athletes got a token of appreciation from the coach, such
as the best teamwork, the best middle player, etc.

After the practice, during lunch time, Benevolence got a chance to introduce the mission of the club and
performed Sign Language (BISINDO - Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia) as one of the skills that is needed to master
when we communicate with tuna rungu and tuna wicara. It was just a sharing experience and it seemed that
the athletes were happy to learn sign language, they followed the gestures that were performed by
Benevolence. The students ended the performance by gesturing these words: “JAKARTA SWIFT, THANK
YOU.” Before leaving, Pak Fitra gave coach Salim, the coach of Jakarta Swift, an SBR souvenir as a gift for
the athletes. It was an unforgettable experience. (VY)

LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR PARENT

Ibu Merry Desiyantini (Merry) is a mother of three, and two of them are students at Sekolah Bogor Raya
who study in Secondary School. She is a housewife with a lot of activities, besides accompanying her
children at home, she supports her children to achieve their numerous academic and non-academic goals.

Ibu Merry’s hobbies are baking and traveling. She experiments
with different ingredients to create cakes and loves to let the
children comment on her baking results. She said it is very nice
to have different kinds of activities both at home and outside
that can stimulate you with different skills and experiences.
She also likes to travel with her family, especially to reach
nature, especially nowadays during the pandemic. Exploring
nature makes her and family feel rested and gain new energy
to do more things.

Beside baking and traveling, she
finds that reading is also good
food for her mind. It helps her to
gain knowledge and also to
understand others perspectives
or new information in the writing
form. Her favorite books are
from the Chicken Soup series.

Thinking about what kind of activities that will help her children not to get bored easily is also fun for her.
She experiences fewer difficulties to help her 1st and 2nd children as both of them can decide the best
learning methods to help them achieve their best results. However, for her third child, who is 5 years old,
she finds learning through playing is the best. As a parent who spends much of her time supporting her
childrens' learning from home, she said she must be creative and actively look for different resources.

She has a personal motto which is “If you get tired, learn to rest not to quit”.
