We still learned online and yet we were able to
explore the world together with our friends and
teachers. Many things happened; we found
thousands of experiences in the 3rd theme,
“Sharing The Planet".
There were 3 activities that brought much joy to
K3 students. First, they planted the microgreens.
Students had the opportunity to choose the seeds
to plant such as spinach, morning glory, and
caisim. After that, they took care of their
microgreens every day at home. They tried their
best to grow their plants. They watered them,
made sure that they get sunlight, and observed
their growth. Finally, they harvested the
microgreens and created sandwiches together.
The students were so happy with the Harvest
Party. They ate the sandwiches they made while
wearing the party hats from their art activities.
They also made their hats by applying the
pointillism technique from one of the famous
artist, George Seurat. They also presented their
planting journal from the lap book in front of their
friends, teachers, and parents.
Another exciting activity in this theme was the
“Bogor Botanical Garden Virtual Tour”. The
students walked around in the Bogor Botanical
Garden with their friends virtually. They saw
different kinds of trees and the famous giant
flower called Rafflesia Arnoldii Flower or in
Bahasa Indonesia, Bunga Bangkai.
We are excited about these ongoing positive
developments and looking forward to receiving
feedback from our K3 families. We greatly
appreciate your continued support and trust. Stay
healthy and stay strong. God bless you all!

In the middle of theme 4, the student experienced planting the water spinach at their home with the
toolkit prepared by the teachers, and in the last week of the theme, they got the chance to harvest
their plants. After frequently watering the plants, taking care of them, and filling the plant care

The 2nd Three-Way Conference
Conferences are a reporting tool that we use in the IB
PYP to communicate information about students'
progress and learning through assessment activities.
Reporting on assessments is all about communicating
what students know, understand, and can do. It describes
students’ learning, identifies areas for growth, and
contributes to the efficacy of the programme.
This academic year, we decided to conduct two three-
way conferences to share information between students,
teachers, and parents. During the first three-way
conference, we applied a new virtual method where we
had the meetings online. The online sessions ran quite
smoothly. After evaluating the first three-way
conference, we decided to apply the same method for the
second conference and saw a 95% attendance rate! We

excited about these conferences.

about being an Illustrator and how important it

Pictures can make a story come to life. That is
what we call illustration. The person who makes
the illustrations for a story is called the

What a great chance for grade 2 students to
meet and share with Kakak Kiki Raihan and
Kakak Yosia Raduk as the illustrators in
Indonesia. The visits were conducted online and
offline on March 17 and March 22, 2021. They
started their career by doing what they love,
which is drawing and reading books. They
began when they were still kids, just like the
students. The story inspired grade 2 students to
put big efforts into what they love and make
their dreams come true.
Next visit, the students got a whole story about how to become an illustrator and how to make
illustrations from kakak Yosia Raduck. He showed steps to illustrate the story, starting from finding
the information until finishing a book. Hopefully, the students can understand the process and be
able to apply the steps if they want to illustrate a certain story.

STUDENTS MEET THE EXPERTS
Meet BASIBA : Trash = Money?
This provocative question piqued the students’ curiosity during the
opening of the expert sharing session by BASIBA (Bank Sampah
Berbasis Aparatur). Ibu Novi Eka Mulya, the keynote speaker gave
additional insights into the trash they usually wasted at home. Not
only can the trash be turned into money, but she also explained that
the program aims to gain society’s participation to make the
environment clean and healthy. In detail, she emphasized that “not all
trash can be accepted” because not all of the trash can be recycled.
She also explained the importance of separating trash at home.
Students asked a lot of interesting questions, such as where the trash went after Basiba collected it, the distribution
of the trash, the benefits of the program for Basiba, whether their trash can be recycled or not, and also the price of
the collected trash. At the end of the session, students were challenged to make a creation using the trash they
collected the day before. In this sharing session, students got a lot of new knowledge and insight about trash, and
how to save the environment and society.
Thank you, Ibu Novi for the meaningful session (AS).
Alumni Sharing Session
Another interesting session that Grade 6 students had was the Alumni
Sharing Sessions with Kakak William Tandridinata and Kakak Faustina (Ara).
Kakak Ara talked about how to deal with bullying when she was at school,
underlining that it is sometimes necessary for us to understand why people
do what they do and how to be more confident with ourselves by taking a
stand for ourselves. “ The key to earn our parents' trust is to show that we
can be responsible with our life.“ Other than that, friendship and
relationship with family is one of the most important aspects during
puberty. According to her, first you need to learn to love yourself and know
your priorities before you build a quality relationship with others.
Kakak William also had quite a journey when he began the process of
puberty and finding what he is passionate about. According to him,
balancing between academic, social and emotional aspects is important to
make life meaningful and interesting. He stressed out the importance of
having a good personality to overcome the feeling of not being confident
with our look. Many questions came up during the session related to how it
feels now to be at his stage, how to achieve goals and to find our passion.
Both Kakak Ara and Kakak William also encouraged us to do more
exploration and experiment when we were young and full of energy so that
we can look back at it and share with pride in our elderly life. They
mentioned that as we grow up to have more independence, more
responsibilities will come along, becoming adolescent means we need to
take good care of ourselves and others as well.(F & LS)

“Let’s Go to Taman Mini
Indonesia Indah”
In this theme 5 “We Are In Place and Time”, grade 1
students learn about types of houses. They also learn
how culture and environments impact types of houses.
To develop students’ understanding regarding the types
of traditional houses in Indonesia, some of our grade 1
teachers; Pak Octa, Bu Yani, and Bu Tika visited Taman
Mini Indonesia Indah. There are many different types of
traditional houses. The teachers visited four types of
houses, which were Rumah Joglo from Central Java,
Rumah Gadang from West Sumatra, Rumah Panggung
from West Java, and Rumah Honai from Papua. There is a
speaker in each type of house. The teachers interviewed
with the speaker regarding the house. The speakers
explained the type of the house, the culture and
environment that influenced the type of the house, the
materials that are used to build the house, and the
functions of each room.
It was a great experience to visit Taman Mini Indonesia
Indah, and to get some information regarding traditional
houses from the speakers. Hopefully, through the video,
some pictures, a brief explanation from the speakers, and
also from teachers, the students can get a deeper
understanding regarding the type of houses. See you on

IT'S SO FUN!
Time flies so fast. Now we are almost at the end of theme 5. Even though we are
still doing online learning, all Grade 1 students and teachers are still showing
their spirit for the learning and teaching process. We still can do many fun
activities during this online learning.
There are so many activities from each lesson that make the students feel happy
and excited. One example is the Music lesson. This is the first time for grade 1
students to learn how to play pianica. When the teacher asked, “Who wants to
try to play the song?” The students were very excited, they said, “Me! Me Ibuu!”
Wow, we are so grateful to see the students are very active.
We can also see their spirit and excitement in other lessons too.
Mathematics lesson is another example. The students learned with
hands-on materials (various shapes from origami paper, string, ice
cream sticks). There were also games, such as Nearpod and Quizizz.
They enjoy learning Mathematics in this way. I remember, at the
beginning of this academic year, one of the students said “Math is
hard. I cannot do it.” But now, this student said, “Wow! Math is so fun.
Now I can do it! I like it!”. All With a big smile on his face.
Keep the spirit up, students! Because your spirit and your smile can
also bring the spirit for us, your teachers! :)

CLASS AT A GLANCE Things that make us happy
Happy Just Because
What makes you happy?
It’s such a simple question, yet nowadays people
seem to have difficulties giving a straightforward
answer. So many things happen that change how we
see things or how we feel. We tend to take
everything for granted including things that make us
happy. Therefore it’s a good idea to take time and
reflect on ourselves and remember again all the
things around us that always make us happy.
Moreover, this month we also celebrate the
International Day of Happiness that happens on
March 20.
It’s a good way to celebrate things that make us
happy and bring positivity to our lives. That’s exactly
what the grade 3 students did for the whole week.
Each of the students shared things that make them
happy during the synchronous session. When looking
at their answers, it’s something as simple as toys or
that they like to have some quality time with their
parents. They show their eagerness in sharing things
that make them happy, and by sharing it, we can also
see how happy they are through their faces and how
it transfers to others.
Happiness can also be seen in their learning,
especially with so many interesting things that they
learned in this theme 5 where they learned about the
media. Yes, media, because nowadays it is something
we cannot separate from our daily lives. It’s really
something that cannot be separated from our daily
life. Grade 3 students learned not only about the
media but also about types of messages that they can
receive through the media. Also, they also learned
about how to make conversation (percakapan) in
Bahasa Indonesia. Furthermore, in math they learned
about time, as something that they will always use in
daily life. They can see the importance of learning,
how to read, and tell the time. But the most
important thing is that they always showed their
spirit and motivation in learning new things and are
always happy through their learning.

CLASS AT A GLANCE
We are so ready to continue our lesson of the fifth Grade 6
theme, Who We Are. During this theme, we
learned about Adolescence stages. This is a very
interesting topic for us because soon we are going
to be teenagers with lots of intense changes that
we are going to face in the future. Nervous and
excited, that both words are best to describe our
feelings during this learning adventure. So, this is
the time for us to be more reflective and
thoughtful.
On March, 20 we celebrated the International Day
of Happiness. This theme has taught us that
happiness is our own responsibility. Happiness is a
feeling of enjoying everything that we are doing in
present time; a feeling of having purposes; a
mindset to manage stress, for just feeling well.
Being happy means being mindful, being healthy
physically and mentally.
We also learned about how to achieve well-being
through strategies which are : connect, be active,
take notice, keep learning and give. Mindfulness
can be a way to connect, take notice and
appreciate simple things in life. We did a research
of a mindfulness activity that we want to explore,
practice individually and demonstrate together in
the class session. It’s amazing to experience being
mindful, taking a break from the busy routines and
just being present at the moment.
Mindfulness helps us to balance our emotional
state and just be thankful, something that we
sometimes forget to do in everyday life. Practicing
mindfulness might have its own challenges at the
beginning, but we surely can feel the benefit when
we have experienced it whole-heartedly. Next, we
are pretty sure to get ready for our final project by
the end of this theme. This project will summarize
our role as a person who has grown. (LS)

HISTORY LOVERS
Magistra Vitae is a Latin expression, used by Cicero in his De Oratore as a personification of history,
which means "life's teacher". This parable shows the importance of history in life. Although historical
events took place in the past, there are many things that can be reflected in the present. In practical
life, history as a science can be used as a basis for policy making and multidisciplinary research.
With these values, Bogor Raya School has opened a Student Leadership Club (SLC) based on historical
interests. This club is called History Lovers. The purpose of History Lovers is to interpret historical
events in the method of historical scholarship in a fun way. To achieve this goal, the activities carried
out in the history club emphasize activities that are centered on students (members of the history
lovers club). They were asked to determine the monthly topic and open the discussion via zoom.
Topics discussed in the History Lovers Club are Operation Barbarossa, Yuan Influence in the China
Dynasty and the New Order History in Indonesia. During the discussion they were very enthusiastic.
Club leaders, Rakyan and Daniel, were able to lead discussions well and invite other members to share
ideas and analysis. (Mg)
BBPB STORY TELLING TO PRIMARY STUDENTS
Every year, around 1.3 million tons of Indonesia’s plastic waste ends up in
the ocean. Even though there have been a lot of initiatives from
governments and non-governmental organizations, it seems like plastic
waste is still a big issue for our beloved country. Besides contaminating
the beaches, plastic waste will most likely affect the balance of the ocean's
ecosystem. Every day, it is common for us to hear bad news about the
effects of plastic waste on various animals in the sea.
This is the problem for everyone, not only the government or
environmental activists. The problem of plastic waste will be far easier to
overcome if there are more and more people aware of the condition.
Fortunately, our students in Bye Bye Plastics Bag (BBPB) Sekolah Bogor
Raya are one of the groups that pay attention and have awareness related
to this issue. In hopes to increase the awareness to as many people as
possible about this plastic waste issue, the BBPB club held a story-telling
and sharing session for their juniors in the primary level on March 1st to
March 4th at the end of the term 3. Besides telling the story related to the
importance of reducing plastic waste to the ocean ecosystem, students
were also engaged in an interactive discussion. (DA)

ONLINE BUSINESS WEEK 2021
On the 8th of March up to the 12th of March the Student Council launched the first ever Online Business Week
Event. Even during this pandemic, we tried our best to uplift students’ school spirits and hold up pre-existing
offline events! The Student Council also aimed to increase students’ productivity during the Covid-19
Pandemic. Business Week has been a long-standing event in Sekolah
Bogor Raya and students always get hyped up for it!
Therefore, this year we went and made the event online. The
event was a success! Students who signed up for the event
were eager and dedicated to the event.
This event encouraged students to explore the business
possibilities of social media and to develop their professional
business skills by creatively marketing their products, and
creating catalogues and business plans!
Online Business Week itself is an event where students are able to open their own online businesses for one
week (5 business days). The catalogues and menus for all of the shops were posted on Instagram and were
promoted through social media. The shops that participated in the event were: Rika Rice, Lunch Date, Sunflour
Bakery, Val’s Accessories and Kawaiimerch. The sellers were required to provide shipping calculations to
customers’ addresses and were in charge of producing and shipping their products. The Student Council
acted as a mediator between customers and sellers in taking customer orders. Sellers were given a week to
prepare their materials, logos and catalogue photos.
Thanks to the Online Business Week event, students are now able
to explore more alternatives in conducting business as well as
appreciate the hardwork and dedication it takes, starting from
creating their business plans, cost profit calculations, updating their
stocks, calculating their own shipping using various shipping
methods such as Gojek, JNE and Grab, as well as promoting their
products through a variety of methods. Overall, the event was a
huge success with many raving reviews from customers! (JL)

Secondary School 3 Way Conferences
Every mid-semester, we conduct a three-way conference
in which the students, the parents and the teachers all sit
together and the students do a presentation about their
achievements, areas of improvement, goals, and steps to
reach their goals which are written in their portfolio in the
form of a blog.
The conference is conducted after the report distribution
which reflects the results of assessments given during the
term. The process teaches the students how to reflect
from the past and how to make improvements and plans
for their future with clear goals.
Kaizen is one japanese term that represents the spirit of
continuous improvement or change for the better. The
essence of kaizen is using small steps to build a huge
success and confidence and also to develop the higher
stack for the next improvement. Through this process, the
students are expected to develop the spirit of continuous
improvement and make changes for the better.
The secret of getting ahead is getting started.
The secret of getting started is breaking your complex
overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then
starting on the first one.
-Mark Twain-
In this current situation, it is still not possible to have an
offline conference and the conference was conducted
online instead. However, it did not reduce the meaning of
the conference itself and the process was conducted
smoothly with the cooperation of parents and students.
Through this online three-way conference, students learn
how to use technology which has already become a part of
our life as well as learn how to develop 4Cs skills:
communication, critical thinking, collaboration and
creativity. With the support and guidance from the
teachers and the parents, together we can develop the
students to excel in their future. (Snd)

Study Club
The Study Club is a peer-tutoring club founded in 2019 in
order to help provide support for students who encounter
difficulties in some of their subject materials. It began as a
direct project where students taught other students directly
in classroom sessions. However, due to the COVID
Pandemic, the Study Club has had to adjust its teaching
methods. It took a while, but eventually, they were able to
transition into the new times and were able to continue our
teaching activities using Zoom meetings.
Since Term 3 of the academic year 2020/2021, they have
also improvised by making informative videos to help
students understand the concepts if they are unable to
attend our online classes. The goal of the Study Club is not
only to function as a simple teaching club. They want both
the participating tutors, as well as the participating students
to have a mutual teaching and learning experience. They
want their club to be less formal, and more directed to
collective learning. They want the tutors to be able to foster
their teaching skills, as well as further what they have
already learned by teaching, while also ensuring that the
students also get to take something away from the sessions.
That is what they believe their club’s goals to be.
To reserve a tutoring session from a tutor from the Study
Club, can sign themselves up through
https://forms.gle/3dCwiXLYYgfjPpP26.
The form is designed for a biweekly tutoring reservation so
that the tutor can make better preparation. So, don't forget
to fill the form out every Friday, at the latest. (GG)

Indonesia Mathematical Modeling
Challenge (InaM2)
Greetings everyone, I am Nathaniel Chai from 11 DP
B, and on the last term break (term 3), Bianca,
Edward, Dominick, and I participated in a math
modeling competition. Besides our team, SBR also
sent other students in 2 teams. They were Katarina,
Ben, Michael, Galvin in the first team and Cheryl,
Raissa, Kiya, and Michelle in the other team.
INAM2C is an international math modeling
competition, and this year we were given the
opportunity to join it. I personally would not say that I
mastered this topic, but even so, I still took this
opportunity to get experience on math modeling
since modeling is an integral part of math
applications.
Over the term break, our group worked on the paper.
Though we did not have the best workflow nor the
best result, I still felt like we did respectively well
considering that none of us had hadany strong prior
knowledge of the topic we were given. I would
definitely recommend that students who are
interested in math applications try and join a
modeling competition. It will really train and apply
your knowledge into a realistic case study. I learned
quite a good amount of new knowledge from this
experience, and I’m glad I had this opportunity. (NC)

MARCH 2021 IB Education
This month has been an active and engaging ibo.org
month for our students. DP 2 students hit the
ground running as the term started with their
second mock test assessments. The assessments
went off smoothly and our students displayed an
exemplary level of discipline and integrity.
In the time after their mock exams, DP2 students
have set themselves tasks which bring out the
finest learner attributes in them. They are engaged
in completing their CAS work and are continuously
coming up with interesting ways in which they
engage with the issues that concern the world at
large. They have also taken up the challenge of
conducting the first ever SBR TOK conference and
are working diligently towards making that dream
a reality. Their leadership and self-management
skills are really coming to the fore as they take one
this daunting task.
The grade 11 cohort is no slouch. DP1 students
have been busy finalising their IA topics for various
subjects. Many students have taken on some
remarkably challenging projects as part of their
internal assessment tasks. Some TOK students
from grade 11 also attended the Beacon Academy
TOK conference this month. Their experience at
the conference was positive and has inspired them
to work on their own batch’s TOK conference in
the next academic year.
While online home learning continues, we can see
the light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines
being made available. It is with hope that we look
ahead, however it is with gratitude that we look at
the past year. This month has marked a full year of
online education at SBR and it must be said that
the students have performed above all
expectations through this difficult and uncertain
time. The resilience, perseverance and indomitable
spirit of our students as well as the whole SBR
community shone through and it is with justifiable
pride that we look to the future. (AR)

"WE" COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS Vol.08 / MARCH 2021
LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR TEACHER
Pak Karya Zaman (Pak Karya), was born on June 3rd, 1971. He took a three year
Diploma, majoring in Karawitan (classical gamelan music and performance practice),
followed by a bachelor's degree, majoring in Bahasa Indonesia and Sastra Daerah
(regional literature). He has been working at SBR since 2010 as the traditional music
teacher in Primary School.
Pak Karya feels proud of Indonesia cultures, especially those from West Java. They are
rich in different traditions such as in music, dancing and also theatre. He thinks that we
need to nurture our traditional cultures actively so that they can be preserved for, and
enjoyed by future generations. He feels blessed and thankful to the educational
institutions that still integrate traditional culture studies as part of the curriculum;
especially for those cultures that exist in the same regions of the schools that use it.
Sekolah Bogor Raya is one of the international or SPK schools in Kota Bogor that still
embraces and actively promotes the traditional cultures. It is embedded in the curriculum
and the after-school activities (extracurricular) such as gamelan and traditional dancing.
While the students who are in Grade 1,2 and 6 learn musical instruments that are
globally recognized, the students from Grade 3,4 and 5 learn traditional music
instruments from West Java.
Pak Karya teaches the traditional music classes. He introduces students to the pentatonic
scales, the use of suling, kecapi, gamelan Degung, gamelan Salendro, calung, angklung
and the other musical instruments from West Java. It is a welcome challenge for him to
familiarize the students with these traditional musical instruments while also integrating
lessons about the traditional costumes and cuisines. He feels that explorations of
different cultures are important building blocks of character development.
Pak Karya has been involved in a wide variety of performances that celebrate West
Java’s cultures such as:
-Joining the Festival of Music Dancing and Theatre.
-Actively involved in traditional music performances (formal and informal recitals).
-Participating as a musician in ceremonies where the government welcomes foreign
guests.
-Performing traditional music for the opening and closing of civic events.
-Performing traditional music in religious ceremonies and celebrations.
-Involved in international Cultural Mission Programmes, representing Indonesia. One of
the most rewarding was with Sekolah Bogor Raya's students as they showcased
Indonesian culture through performances in the Czech Republic.
His personal motto is “Stay Humble, Helpful and Blessed.”
