FOREWORD Vol.2 / AUGUST 2021
From SBR's Curriculum Coordinator
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our students have successfully settled into their new classes and our
community is adjusting to the routines of the new academic year. It has
been a great start to the term, and our teachers and staff must be
recognised for their commitment, time and extraordinary efforts to
provide quality teaching and learning at our school.
While we have been unable to begin in-person learning due to the
ongoing PPKM restrictions, our school continues to update our policies
and safety measures to ensure a smooth transition back into in-person
learning once these restrictions have been lifted. We are proud to
announce that all of our staff have been vaccinated, and we have also
seen over 80% of our high school students get vaccinated as well!
We are looking forward to having some of our on-site programs resume
soon as well, beginning with our drive-thru library, and drive-in learning.
Please stay tuned for additional information on these programs from
the principals at each level.
We are also working to restart some of the extra-curricular activities
that needed to be suspended during the pandemic, so please be on the
lookout for additional information on those as well. We have already
begun with our long standing Mandarin program, with additional
programs to begin starting in term 2.
I would like to say thank you to the community for your involvement in
our virtual celebration of Indonesia's 76th Independence Day! Many of
you watched all of our live streaming events, and took part in the online
games and competitions that were held to commemorate the event.
We have a few more online events coming up, most notably our annual
celebration of Literacy week at the beginning of September, as well as
our Virtual Open House on September 25th. And as always, make sure
to tune in to our YouTube channel every week to catch new episodes of
"Inspiring SBR" and "Amia Boya!"
Once again, I would like to thank you all for your support of the school
as we head into the final weeks of term 1, and looking forward to even
more successes in the weeks to come!

Life during the COVID-19 pandemic is
difficult for parents and children.
However, education is important. Children
under five are going through a stage of
rapid brain and skills development. For
optimum development, young children
need a stimulating environment to play
and learn. K2 offers young children a wide
variety of early learning experiences,
developing their communication skills as
well as their social skills, even though we
started it virtually.
As this is the first year of school for most
of the students, the beginning of the
week goes smoothly. We would like to
thank the parents and guardians at home
for assisting and supporting the students’
learning.
Here we share some tips for parents and
guardians that might help your child get
used to the new activity. First, set a
comfortable and quiet place to learn, so
they will know that every time they have
classes, that should be the place for them
to sit and do the activities.
Second, be ready before the virtual class begins. For example: take a bath, wear school uniform,
prepare snacks and drink and also the learning resources. Third, make a whole day schedule together
with your child and commit. Hopefully, with these three points, your child will get more used to the
new activities as a student.

COMMEMORATION OF INDONESIA'S 76TH
INDEPENDENCE DAY
On 17 August 2021, the Indonesian people commemorate the 76th year of Indonesian
Independence Day. This is a very important moment for all of us to remember the struggles of our
predecessors. To celebrate this significant event, PG-K students played various types of
competitions virtually together.
The committee of PG-K prepared a competition that PG-K students can carry out. The online
competitions are as follows:
K1 : 1. Coloring the flag red and white.
2. Putting colored pencils into the bottle.
K2 : 1. Decorating the Indonesian flag.
2. Move the ball using a spoon.
K3 : 1. Flip the bottle.
2. Draw and decorate the Indonesian flag with your partner (parent or guardian).
PREP : 1. Wear your own clothes, pants, and shoes.
2. Coloring using Pear Deck.
This competition was happily participated by students and parents at home. Students were excited
and enthusiastic about playing in the competition. The teachers were also very enthusiastic in
directing and motivating the students during the competition activities. Students will receive
certificates for their victories and participation in the competitions. Hopefully, the celebration of
Indonesian Independence Day in the coming year will be done at school, and that Indonesia will be
free from this coronavirus outbreak soon so that we can all return to our activities at school.

PRIMARY SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
Within this newsletter, we welcome you all as we are now in the new academic year 2021 - 2022! After
our eventful break, we entered this academic year under emergency circumstances after our
government implemented strategies to help manage the spread of Covid-19. Despite the
circumstances, we were still able to learn many new things, do great things for others, as well as for
ourselves and our families. And we survived!
In this newsletter, we will share a personal story from one of the teachers who might represent many
others who got covid-19 during the break. In the face of this though, the fighting spirit of the SBR
community members has spread and become more powerful than the virus itself! Celebrating the
76th Indonesian Independence Day is one of the powerful ways to support each other, to be brave
and optimistic that we can overcome it because we are never alone. Together we can! (DK)
Me, Myself, and Make-Up
Hearing people get Covid-19 in your everyday lives is not the same as YOU getting it
yourself! It is a "turning life upside down" situation and such a transforming
experience. When I first got the symptoms, I already had a hunch that this is
probably Covid-19. It was correct! What made me feel upset was that I also infected
my family. There was no time to rest for me. I had to handle all the household. One
of the things that I also must think about is how to lift our spirits, especially my
mom's.
My parents live with me which unfortunately was a safety issue at that time. My mom was super
scared of getting infected by me. Alas, in the end, my dad finally got infected. This was when things
got worse. I started to juggle more and more. There were many things to handle and to think of. At
that time I had loads of guilty feelings washed over me, and I just had to “wake up”. I started by loving
myself more, to release the guilt because I am the one that carried the virus to my house that was
supposed to be a safe place for everyone.
I started to boost my self-love by doing my make-up and dressing up every day as if I wanted to go
somewhere; even though on that day I had to wash the dishes, cook meals, mop the floor, clean the
bathroom, and many other household stuff. Make-up has been another power outlet for me. I tried to
use different make-up tools when I wasn’t doing anything. I tried a lot of make-up stuff that I bought
before I got sick. I started to feel calmer and began to accept the situation. I tried my best to take
care of my parents. The family relationship got more solid and I felt that. My husband helped me a lot
during the turmoil. I also felt loads of love and support from my siblings, friends, and their continuous
attention through WhatsApp messages and food deliveries.
The conclusion? This pandemic is the worst, not a thing can change that. However, we must face it
mindfully. No one said it's going to be easy but accepting the situation and trying to live with it, is
probably the best thing we can do. You will find your own ways to face the situation, ways that are
suitable for you. So, whenever you think that you are at a low, deep, sunken level of your life, accept it,
let go of it, be grateful, be mindful, and find ways to stand up, fast.

STUDENTS MEET THE EXPERTS
Signs and Symbols
Grade 3 students are learning about signs and symbols under the Learning about “Rambu-rambu Lalu Lintas”
transdisciplinary theme “How We Organize Ourselves”. To provoke with Pak Djembar
students' understanding about this theme, we invited two experts who
explained more about specific signs and symbols to the students. The first Having a great moment learning about SBR
expert was Mr Benedict Emil Rinne who explained to the students about the symbol with Mr Ben
meaning behind each element in the Sekolah Bogor Raya logo. He also raised
students’ recognition about the elements in Sekolah Bogor Raya symbols.
The students were so excited to know more about the meaning behind their
school symbol.
The second expert was Bapak GM Djembar. He is a police officer who works
in Polresta Bogor Kota. He became our expert to support our first line of
inquiry about the use of signs and symbols around us, especially about the
use of traffic signs that we can see on the street. The students got the
chance to know more about the function of traffic signs, the different types
of traffic signs and the meaning of some traffic signs that we usually find on
the street. Listening to Pak Djembar’s explanation really enhanced the
students’ understanding about traffic signs and raised their awareness as
road users.(NP)

GIn the first theme, “Who We Are”, Grade 2 students are in the middle of Having discussion with Dr. Kelvin
exploring their needs and responsibilities towards themselves and their
surroundings. They learned about their body and what humans need to
stay healthy. The second graders' curiosity does not stop at getting to
know about their bodies; They are so excited to know more about the
organs, function, and process of the respiratory and digestive systems. To
support them, grade 2 teachers invited an expert speaker to their class.
What a great chance for grade 2 students to meet and share with Dr.
Kelvin Marwali, MD. He is an internist at EMC Sentul Hospital. Dr. Kelvin
grabbed Grade 2’s attention and piqued their curiosity about the digestive
and respiratory organs! He was able to explain how these complex
systems work in the human body in a fun way. He shared pictures of how
our digestive organs work in the process of the digestive system and led
us through some action that helped us understand the respiratory system
process.
“Do we breathe when we are eating? Can we talk when we are eating?”
These questions and more were addressed in the thought-provoking
session. Grade 2 students were so excited to answer and share their ideas.

STUDENTS MEET THE EXPERTS
Food Sustainability, Our Responsibility!
On Thursday, August 12 2021 we had a sharing session with our special guest, Bapak Ir.Gusti Made Gama, MM, a
professional researcher and natural plant breeder. Bapak Made was here to share his knowledge and experience on
maintaining sustainable agriculture. He shared lots of information about sustainable and organic agriculture. He also
taught us about the three sustainable principles which are environmental protection, social responsibility and
economic success. Sustainable agriculture is one of the implementations of sustainable development in agriculture.
One fine day with Pak Made
In order to be able to support sustainable agriculture, we have to be aware of what is happening in our environment
and care enough to support our land and natural resources. We were glad to learn about what Pak Made has done to
support nature and maintain sustainability. Pak Made showed us about the Aquaponic method, which is an
interesting system that is able to support the sustainability of natural resources. Another good insight was how
important it is to take actions that are harmless for our environment. We have to show our love for nature by using
every resource wisely and stop exploiting it for our selfish gains. Thank you Pak Made for inspiring us to be kind and
to care more about the environment. We are not apart from nature, we are a part of nature. Saving nature saves us!
Another insightful session came from Kak Kukuh, Food Cycle Indonesia. Kak Kukuh shared a story about Food
Cycle’s programs that came up as a way to reach one of the goals in the SDG, which is Zero Hunger. A concerning fact
is that after Saudi Arabia, Indonesia is the second most country to contribute to food waste in the world. Kak Kukuh
discussed how all of us could actually participate in a great initiative for hunger-free and zero food waste. Food Bank
and Community Service Organization are examples of how the movement has helped lots of people by maintaining
the surplus food to be delivered to hungry people.
A day with Kak Kukuh, Food Cycle Indonesia
The good news is, we can also contribute through similar acts of kindness. By doing so, we give more chances to
hungry people to enjoy food and less chances for people to waste food. The simplest way that we can do this is to first
appreciate the food that we have. What’s next? We’ll see what ideas we can come up with. Anyway, theme 1 is still
ongoing. Let's make it more meaningful by applying what we have learned to ourselves and others. Thank you Kak
Kukuh! We will always remember that saving food is also part of saving nature and people. (WA)

STUDENTS MEET THE EXPERTS
Let’s Do Something about Our Waste!
Action! Action! Action! Surprising fact about garbage
We need to take action and solve our waste problem.
Kaka Athara Lovina Djajadisastra from Kertabumi has shared some ideas
from Kertabumi on how to protect our environment and how to reduce and
recycle our waste. Another word for that is a waste management program.
It is important due to the fact that in Indonesia, our home country, we had
more than 64.000.000 tons of trash in the year 2017. That’s about 580 times
the size of Borobudur Temple! It is definitely alarming and worth our
attention. It doesn’t only affect us as humans but also the wildlife.
She said that wildlife rehabilitation is one of the things that we should pay close attention to because our waste,
especially our plastic waste, has become a danger to the animals. They suffer because of our waste. During the
discussions, the students came up with some disturbing facts about how animals were affected by our waste too,
such as “A turtle ate a straw and got stuck”. “A Coyote’s head got stuck inside a plastic jug.” Those are just some of the
things that happened to animals because of our plastic waste. Therefore, we need to do something about it. It relates
perfectly to Grade 5’s final line of inquiry in theme 1, “actions towards preserving the environment”.
Clearly Grade 5 will have a good foundation on the reasons why their actions are
important and should be done right away. They will also find some actions they can
take in order to protect our environment and how to reduce and recycle. They
become a responsible and thoughtful member of the community and hopefully they
will be able to protect our planet and make it a better place to live. Thank you Kaka
Athara for the nice ideas and provocations (EPS).

great artists whose work really captured the world.
We learned that even though we are young, our

through arts.
Our expert is Kak Basa Nova Siregar. Kak Basa is a
member of the Indonesia Mengajar. She volunteers
to teach less fortunate children in remote areas and
small islands all over Indonesia. Kak Basa taught
young children how to read, count, and sing songs.
However, the most important thing, she taught them

Kak Basa said that our voice is like the seeds of the dandelion flower which spread kindness, happiness, and hope.
It was a wonderful experience to have a sharing session and discussion with Kak Basa, as she enjoyed sharing her

Practice yoga with ibu Dora
“We are human. What are the needs of humans?” Here is
the question posed by Ibu Dora to Grade 1 students as the
opening. Grade 1 students were excited to answer; They
said, “Sleeping, eating, breathing, and exercising.”
Ibu Dora is a Certified Yoga Educator and Kids Yoga
teacher. She shared about Healthy Living and Yoga
Practices. She explained that in daily life, having good
physical health is one of the important things. In order to
have good physical health, people need to do some
exercise and practice their physical fitness. On top of that,
we should remember other parts of a healthy lifestyle like
self-care and mental health. There are plenty of activities
people can do to boost their self-care and mental health.
One example is doing yoga. Ibu Dora explained the
importance of yoga and how it can, not only calm our
body but also our mind and soul. She demonstrated some
yoga practices, and also invited the students to the
movement from the beginning until the relaxation.
It was a pleasure to have Ibu Dora as our expert visit.

so much energy and excitement. The Grade 4
students had a wonderful time during their one
day holiday. They also shared what they liked
about Independence Day.
Our students excitedly participated in the
competitions held by the school, from dancing,
decorating their room, cooking with their family,
and also participated in the in house Cerdas
Cermat Games. It was fun, high energy and of
course very memorable.
The students also shared their feelings about what they like to do on
Independence Day. They enjoyed the traditional games such as tug of war, sack
race, marble games, “makan kerupuk” and many others. They shared their stories
on the Jamboard and told stories about what other things they like about
Independence Day.
Even though Independence day was over, the students were still very excited to talk about it. Some of them played
traditional games at home with their families and other relatives, since we are still in the middle of the pandemic.
Independence Day was truly a mood booster for everyone, which makes us truly grateful to our country, our family
and friends. (YK)

CLASS AT A GLANCE We are so ready for Grade 6!
Grade 6
Happy Independence Day, Indonesia! This year is
a totally different way of celebrating
Independence Day. For the first time, we’re
celebrating it in the form of a virtual celebration.
Pandemic has insisted us to be more creative in
having a party to celebrate “Dirgahayu Indonesia:
Indonesia Tangguh, Indonesia Tumbuh”. Despite
the fact that we couldn’t have a face to face
competition such as lomba makan kerupuk, ‘shirt
rally’ or ‘tug of war’ at the soccer field, believe us,
it’s still fun!
Independence Day means “Merdeka!”. It’s a word
that represents freedom. Surely we had this as
our way of celebrating the Independence Day in
Sekolah Bogor Raya.
Sharing the meanings of Independence Day
We were gathering to share our stories of how we held the celebration at home and we also had the freedom to
decide which activities or contests that we would like to join. There’s even a grade 6 student who celebrated
Independence Day as a birthday celebration.
Even though we had it online, learning to always be happy and wholeheartedly in any kind of situation is our way
of pursuing and spreading happiness. What a great way to start our new academic journey. Let’s enjoy every
moment and celebrate it with our most delightful hearts. Until then, see you in our next story! (WA)

LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR PARENT
Ibu Priska Galih (Ibu Priska) is a mother of students at SBR's
Primary School who enjoys cooking, baking and singing.
As she likes cooking and baking, she accepts different kinds of
food and snacks orders from outside home. As many orders
came, she decided to name her cooking and baking service
“Dapur Sederhana”; because everything was started from
simple ingredients that are provided at home.
Her favorite food is noodles such as “mie ayam”, however she
enjoys mostly every original food from Western, Java and
China such as gudeg, bakso, tom yum, steak and more. She
also likes traditional snacks from Java. For her, it is important
to taste many foods as part of her learning and to enrich her
knowledge about food types and ingredients.
She sometimes spends her time watching cooking programmes
on TV, and from here she has a favorite chef, Chef Gordon
Ramsay from US Masterchef. Besides learning from Chef
Gordon, she also observes the selebgram activities such as
@tintinrayner, @xanderskitchen, @ayuaudrey91,
@anneavantieheart.
From them, she learns that they started cooking or baking
naturally because of their attention and care of families.
As a parent, she tries to manage her time in supporting her children studying at home, while still having
allocated time to do her cooking, baking and other activities. She is still working on managing it ideally. She
manages her time by doing the cooking and baking orders in the early morning and afternoon. After that, she
allocates time for her family. According to her, it is very important to get support from her husband. Without
his encouragement, she may never have started to accept orders. Her husband also happily supports her by
accompanying their children in learning, guiding the children to finish tasks from school; and she will be
involved in checking the tasks at the end.
Ibu Priska’s personal motto is “Life is about being blessed to be a blessing”.
Everyone has creativity within them, be yourself, it’s just a matter of unlocking that creativity.
Family gives you the roots to stand tall and strong.
