1. TEACH THE CORE VALUES: EMPATHY &
CURIOSITY

Global citizenship requires a person to look outside
themselves and their own limited community to
extend their energy and compassion outwards to
others. Sometimes children ask questions about other
people that they perceive to look or act different from
themselves. Instead of shutting these questions down,
work with our kid's curiosity by taking the time to
explain people's differences and underlying
similarities.Most importantly, encourage our children
to think and act with empathy. Validate their emotions
("I see you are feeling frustrated/sad/excited") so that
they can identify feelings in themselves. By teaching
them the value of their own feelings and emotions, we
are setting them up for the next step, extending that
compassion and understanding to others.

K2 Welcome to the new theme, K2s!

The second theme is filled with excitement,
fun, and a lot of learning. They learn and do
the given tasks enthusiastically. K2’s second
transdisciplinary theme is “How We Express
Ourselves”. Students learn about knowing their
feelings like happy, sad, angry, and scared.
They understand more about the activities
that make them happy, sad, angry, or scared.
They also identify the colors that represent
each feeling.
This year, K2 students celebrated Literacy
Week in a different way. They celebrated it
through Drive-in Learning, which is a new
program in K2 that allowed them to learn and
meet their teachers and friends without
having any physical contact since they were
staying in their cars.

This year, K2 students celebrated Literacy Week in a different way. They
celebrated it through Drive-in Learning, which is a new program in K2 that
allowed them to learn and meet their teachers and friends without having
any physical contact since they were staying in their cars. They were very
excited to dress up as their favorite characters. They also played the Picker
Wheel, which shows their favorite stories and rhymes. K2 teachers also
dressed up. They chose to play as the Five Little Monkeys and wore
pajamas and monkey headbands/masks with their Mommy Monkey! All of
these goals would not be possible without the support from parents and
guardians at home. We are looking forward to discovering new experiences
and journeys together.
Stay safe and healthy.

K3 Students enjoyed some activities such as virtual picnics and drive-in learning. Having a virtual picnic
is a fun way that we can do during a pandemic. We created a virtual experience for the students as
part of the Practical Life Lesson. The students did not only have fun eating the food together but also
learned how to do the table setting by arranging their cutleries and eating their food properly. They
also learned the proper ways to hold a spoon and fork and be in a good position while eating. That’s an
awesome virtual picnic that we had!

Another activity is the Drive-in learning; this is regularly done once a week. The students created an
Ondel-Ondel art and craft as one of the Indonesian Icons from DKI Jakarta. They have done coloring,
drawing, and pasting the materials to create their own Ondel-Ondel. What marvelous artworks that
they have made on that day! Let’s have another fun activity together!

PREP

It has been a very interesting month as we continue to adjust
and learn in online learning routines. We are amazed at each
child’s progress; they transition well even on rigorous days. The
children showed their enthusiasm by constantly exploring,
discovering, and asking questions. Now we are on the third
theme, How We Express Ourselves, with the Central Idea,
“People can express themselves through celebrations.“

In this theme, Prep students learn about the characteristics of
various celebrations, the ways people express themselves
through celebrations, and reasons people have different ways
to celebrate. The students played guessing games in each
class and dressed up as their favorite characters in a story. As
part of expressing themselves, the students also learned to cut
the different lines and practiced braiding. They also developed
eye-hand coordination and strengthened their fine motor
skills.

We can't wait to do other exciting activities and have a
performance in the zoom session in the next few weeks! We
are excited about these ongoing positive developments and
looking forward to receiving feedback from our Prep families.

National Heroes and Teachers Day

There are two important events to be commemorated on November:
National Heroes Day on the 10th and National Teachers Day on the 25th.
We would like to salute all medical officers around in Indonesia and around
the world, who took on a role as real heroes for all sickness due to covid-19.

They have put their lives on the line for others regardless of the
consequences. Everyone is praying and hoping that we all can survive in
this pandemic. Every person works on their health, both physical and
mental.

Teachers mostly work to maintain that all students have a balanced life
during this situation, ensuring students are ready to learn and provide all
sorts of different things for learning itself. Teachers should maintain their
mental health to positively inspire and encourage students to keep learning
and not give up.

The question is, how can teachers maintain their positive energy for their
students? Teachers at SBR made a conscious decision to never give up on
their students long ago; For the sake of the students, teachers always work
hard to support and encourage them to not give up on themselves either.

What may surprise you, is that all of the positive energy and motivation to
do this, comes from our students!.
Here, our teachers are willing to share their feelings and hopes. Enjoy! (DK)

Yes, I am a proud teacher!

This academic year, I'm all alone in my classroom, alone with empty desks, blank
whiteboard and quiet corridor. Our learning activities really depend on stable
connection and fully charged gadgets. We share everything virtually.

Every plan has changed a lot, we revise many things, learn new apps and websites,
create cool online resources for kiddos just to make sure they won't be bored
during the lesson.I often wonder, are they okay? Do they really understand my

explanation? How do they feel today? And many more questions popped up in my
mind about them.Previously, we had a noisy classroom, started the lesson with
interesting conversation, they shared what they felt, we laughed together, they

came to my desk and asked me random things or maybe only for showing me that
they could fold the paper neatly, we played together, and we ate lunch together.

How I miss those moments.Despite everything that's happened (or still happens),
there are a lot of things to be thankful for. They give me hope, they cheer me up,

they make me do my best, and I know that I'm not the only one who feels this.
Thanks, Kiddos. I miss you all.

I feel so fortunate to have met many amazing SBR students before and during this pandemic.
Every day we had in the classroom was something to look forward to; Every student always had

something special, funny, or witty to share.
Watching their little achievements each day, whether they were really focused on an activity or
finally having that “AHA! I GET it” moment, is the best motivation. I especially miss the warmth of

walking through the halls of the school and seeing the kid’s smiling faces;
So ready to greet, wave to, or hug their special friends and teachers. This pandemic has not
unmotivated us, though. On the contrary, it has encouraged us to be more creative, more

adaptable, and all the more eager to support the kids.
Every online lesson, chat session, and video prepares and keeps us connected for when we can

finally greet each other in the school halls again!
Ms Shannon, Language Teacher

Life will never be the same and this situation really calls for all of my positivity
on looking at the situation and challenges my trust to almost its limit. Before

the pandemic, it was easier for me to handle my teaching and learning
situation.

As a teacher,
I need energy coming from my students and I can get it by having the face to
face kind of teaching and learning. When the pandemic came, it took quite
some time for me to adjust and to supply myself with more positivity, more

than I usually need.
I have to be able to see the bright things outside the situation and should be
able to transform that energy to my students, whom I know are still adjusting
as well. I also have to inject loads of trust, more than the usual dose, towards
my students especially related to the assignments, their absence during the

online lesson, and much more.
However, I believe that after the hurricane will come this rainbow. I just have

to be patient and wait a little more.
Ibu Astrid, Grade 6 Teacher

I love to be a teacher especially in Sekolah Bogor Raya because this school really gives me a
room to improve myself, professionally and personally. I love working together with students
as I can express myself while being together with them. I work together with them, sharing

laughter and tears, sharing knowledge and experience.
It is not only them who are studying from me but vice versa, I learn a lot from my beloved
students!I learn to be more honest about what I feel. I learn to be open minded and being
open hearted, forgiving and starting in new trusting relationships. Now, because of the

pandemic, things are no longer the same. I still meet them, online.
Trying to be more connected even though the time we spend is very limited, yet I hope they

can feel what I feel. The feeling of connectedness and love full heartedly.

Last academic year was my first year teaching at SBR. It is a wonderful experience to learn, play,
work and grow with the students. We have created many stories, shared information and

experiences together. Shaking hands, greeting, hugging and chatting became the things that
bound us. At the end of last year, everything changed. Offline becomes online, chatting and

touching can only be done virtually.
What doesn't change is only our hope to keep growing and having each other day by day. During

Teacher's Day celebration, I was not expecting chocolates and flowers like what I got from my
previous students. I only ask for prayers and love from my present students. However, at noon I
got a message from one of the parents. She said "Hai ibu Deassy, Selamat Hari Guru ya. Today,

me and my family went to a restaurant and we ordered pizza.
I am so surprised when my son explains about Fraction through the pizza!" It makes me smile,
with a little tear in my eyes.Thank you, for me that is the greatest gift of all. I am happy if my
teaching can give a good impact to my students. They will remember me anytime and anywhere.

It means a lot because what I teach to them will never be erased.
Ibu Deassy, Grade 2 Teacher

"Ibu, let's play together!!"
"Ibu, look at this. I draw you!"
"Ibu, may I go to the toilet, please?"
I still can hear their voices inside my head. I can see their bright eyes when they tell me about
their weekend. I still can feel their presence in this class, the now-empty class. Those kinds of
conversations make my bonding with my students stronger. How about now? When everything
runs online?
Well, the connection between my students and I formed uniquely in this academic year!! Such as,
when have we seen our students say "good morning" with their hair still messy? The face that just
woke up? When we explain the lesson and their pet dogs suddenly appear on the screen? Or when
we explain then the internet connection suddenly lost because we forgot to top up mobile data
and the whole class panicked?
Beyond my expectation, those kinds of situations make our bonding stronger in the class!! I
thought 2020 would be the year I get everything I want, but it turns out to be the year I am grateful
for everything I have.
Ibu Sharah, Grade 5 Teacher

Before and during a pandemic is totally different. Before the pandemic, teaching activities was easier, I
had direct communication with students, I could deliver my material face to face with students, I could

show students how to sing or play music instruments straight away, as easy as that. Then, there is
pandemic, and it's totally challenging. Everything seems difficult for me,since I need to teach online, I
figured out how to show students the good way of playing a musical instrument. I was struggling a lot.

Then, voila, I did it! Together with students,we have so much fun by playing music games online,
singing together during virtual class, even playing music instruments. Also this pandemic makes me

more familiar with technology, like zoom, and how to make interactive slides, how to draw notation
using zoom whiteboard. Yeah, I proud of myself, I can deliver the material even online.

This pandemic really makes me realize one thing as a teacher; teaching needs a big heart.
Before the pandemic I can meet my students at school. We can share information, experience
and ideas. We can have a chat or laugh at a joke during our free time. During the pandemic, I

only can see my students in 2x 9 zoom boxes for several hours in a day.
We depend on our learning process on the availability of gadgets and internet connection. We

need to prepare interesting learning materials to make sure that the students will keep their
focus and get engaged to the lesson that we discuss. Although it is hard, I always feel it’s worth

it when at the end of the last zoom meeting I see my students smile and say “Thank you for
today Ibu, see you again tomorrow!”
Ibu Nancy, Grade 3 Teacherr

When someone asks why anyone would want to become a teacher, for me it is simply
because being a teacher is a noble profession to help change a life; my own life and
student’s life as children. Before the pandemic and during the pandemic, change has
happened! Turning a teaching method into a completely online system has never been
easier. Replacing all of the face-to-face interactions and real excitement that I could bring
to the class into an on screen interaction for months, means that, "Yes, I am teaching in an
empty classroom, and it's kind of sad."
Teaching virtually was a lot more work than actually teaching in class. I’ve not been trained
to do any of this, but I don’t want my students to be confused or less happier because of
this. Remember, the mission of being a teacher will always be the same. It is to create a
happy learning environment for children that will make them remember and cherish every
moment. It is not about the situation, but it’s about how I could create those moments for
them in certain ways.
And today, I can proudly say this, “Thank you Ibu Wendy, for not giving up, for keeping the
positive energy and for maintaining your own happiness so you can share it with the
children through your creativity in teaching.” Last but not least, I just hope that people
know that we are trying our absolute best as teachers.
Ibu Wendy, Grade 6 Teacher

Being a teacher is a true blessing for me. This is my 19th year experience being in SBR. The main
reason that keeps me strong until now is the students. Seeing them grow and happy always makes me
proud to be a teacher. Time flies so fast. Everything is so unpredictable but I am happy that we can go

through every ups and downs together.
The saddest moment was the first time we had quarantines last April. At that time, I could not have a

happy end farewell with my students. I really miss the moments we spent the days together, seeing
them without distance. Despite all the things that have happened, I am thankful that I still have a
chance to see the students even if they are far away. The students are amazing.
They really show a love of learning. We always try to strengthen each other and have fun together.

Hopefully, we can meet again at school. I will always be thankful to you, kids and parents for all the
hard work and effort you have put in. Stay healthy and safe!

I remember how I always start my day in my classroom before the pandemic . Greeting
my students, listening to their stories.Looking at their happy faces makes me feel happy

too. Teaching and learning together in the classroom is something I am always
enjoying. But, It changes because of this pandemic. It changes the way we teach, the

way we listen and understand them and makes them understand us.
But I am still proud to be a teacher. I am proud to see my students still show their
passion to learn. I am proud to see them show their courage and resilience in facing
this situation. And, I am proud they still keep their smile and happiness to share with
their friends and teachers. My challenges are nothing compared to what my students

have. So, I think I am proud to be a teacher and even more now than before.
Ibu Rahimah, Grade 3 Teacher

I am proud to be a teacher...and never thought that I would experience teaching digitally as
what I go through during this pandemic. Before the pandemic, I feel that teaching was

classical. Even though in PYP it is already mentioned that teaching and learning should go
beyond the classroom or school building but you never really feel it until you experience
distance learning yourself.

Since joining SBR in 2004, I have equipped myself to teach and learn digitally. It was fun yet
challenging. I strive to be a long life learner through many readings and attending many
workshops. Still...what flip classroom is...still can be extended. When March 2020 was

approaching, then every digital learning prepared became visible to me and my students.
We learn together, we trial and error together...finally we survive together... I feel blessed to

experience this. It improves me as a human, it opens my mind to the meaning of life and
collaboration. Even though we are apart, I feel that during this pandemic we are even
closer.

Closer to students, closer to the parents, closer to my colleagues, closer to my family, and
closer to God. Finally, this succession is beautiful...and I am grateful to go through it. It is a

portal to a new normal life...
Ibu Adriani, Grade 6 Teacher

This year has been a rollercoaster ride, it has its ups and downs. As a teacher and a proud
member of the Sekolah Bogor Raya community, I have learned to adapt and try to be a better

version of myself during difficult times. Yes, things are drastically different than before, no
students in my classroom as I'm the only one there. I always long to see and meet them in

person.
But at the end of the day, I am grateful that our school, our parents and our students managed

to thrive and keep going day by day. Being with my students online actually really helps me,
they remind me how much I enjoy teaching.

Everyday is more than just a learning process, we share stories, we laugh, tell jokes, listen to
each other when someone is having a bad day or upset about something, we get to know

family members who sometimes pop up on the screen and we even celebrate birthdays too. So
everyone, I believe we can get through all this together and I am grateful that we can support
each other.

Months ago, we gathered in our classroom. There was laughter, noisiness, chatters, and
never ending questions from students that made the classroom strangely alive. But this

year is different. This year is hard for all of us. We feel overwhelmed because of the
situation. But one thing never changes...I love teaching.

I love my students. I will always go above and beyond for my students to make this year
fun and engaging. I don't mind doing more, so they will have an awesome year despite
the situation. In case no one's told you, this year has proven what we already all know -

That teachers are truly AMAZING!
Ibu Anisha, Grade 4 Teacher

What is it like teaching our students during this pandemic? I am at school, in my
classroom with my partner and our students are on the computer screen. Everyone is
muted. Oh look, there’s a student who’s using his zoom filter, and another student using
her virtual background. Most students have their profile pics of their favorite characters

but all of us in class know the students behind those pictures.
Wait a second, a student has “AFK” beside her name, another student writes “eating”
beside his name, and another is asking permission to go to the toilet on the zoom chat.

This is the way we communicate now.
For sure, it’s not ideal but I feel blessed that I am still able to connect and communicate
with my students. They do their best so that’s why I am the proud teacher of grade 6A.

Ibu Endah, Grade 6 Teacher

The pandemic has its own way to work around and within us. The first experience I had with
my Grade 5C students was wonderful. Me, my partner, and my students get the chemistry

working already before the online classes started. Therefore, somehow, the online class made
us even closer together. The parents are also such a very supportive group.

Thank you Grade 5C (2019/2020), parents, and Ibu Sharah Nabila for such a wonderful journey
together. Starting the new journey to the 2020/2021 class gave me anxiety on how to start the

class. I am worried about several things that I do not know about.
However, again, with a positive mindset and another wonderful partner, I manage to overcome
the anxiety. Both me and my partner manage to create a wonderful online class and build up a

great chemistry with the Grade 4C (2020/2021). We are also again supported by wonderful
parents. Personally I am thankful for a lesson from Carol Dweck: “Mindsets are just beliefs.
They are powerful beliefs, but they are just something in your mind, and you can change your

mind”. So I always set my mind to have a great class, therefore I will always try to spread
positive energy and cherish wonderful mindsets for the sake of our children.

brought for their students; For themselves, their jobs, their expertise and judgement are

critically important for solving challenges throughout the pandemic and after.
As a P.E. teacher , I need to be creative to keep our students motivated and in high spirits
while they are learning online. Preparing lessons is a challenge but we always try our best to

Heroes now are no longer fighting against the

on December 4th.

The competition held included: speech, storytelling,
English, English podcast drama, membaca puisi,

cerpen. It was divided into Junior High School and
Senior High School categories.

In terms of language used, the competition was in
English and in Bahasa Indonesia. Even though this
edition used a different format compared to the
previous edition, it did not lessen students’ enthusiasm
to join and show up their skills.

Additionally, there were even many students from
outside of Java who participated in the ALC2020
edition. In total, over 200 students participated. The
students came from more than 24 schools all over
Indonesia such Aceh, Surabaya, Jambi, etc.

Sekolah Bogor Raya as a community was so proud to
be able to facilitate the students in improving their

From the first batch of members (the club was

They were really interested about the broad scope of

"WE" COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS

LEARNING TOGETHER WITH SBR PARENTS

dr Yhossie Suananda, MARS, is one of our parents
who enjoys sharing her knowledge with our students,
especially during lessons that need information
about health. Her hobbies are doing yoga, ballet and
tai chi.She is a doctor who works with scoliosis
patients and their families, and is also a yoga teacher.

Scoliosis is an abnormal curve in the spine. It often
occurs in children of ages 10-15 years old, especially girls.
Its symptoms are uneven hips, shoulders, and/or a
protruding back.At her clinic, IZI CLINIC in Bogor, she
gives specific exercises for children with scoliosis
according to the shape of their spine. If the shape of the
curve is too big, sometimes exercise alone is not enough,
and a scoliosis brace is made.

We can easily check the possibility of scoliosis by doing
independent observation. Bend your body and observe the
differences of height in the back. A slanted back shows a
possibility of scoliosis.

The earlier the diagnosis and therapy, the more effective the
results, so do not wait to get checked. dr Yhossie also
teaches both yoga at her clinic, and anatomy at yoga
schools, but during this pandemic, the classes are held
online.

She was worried about the children’s education when the
government first announced the pandemic and the
cancellation of schools, but SBR promptly reacted in
creating Online Home Learning (OHL), so the learning was
not interrupted. Her worries about the difficulties in OHL
were also proven wrong. The children were quick to adapt
and did not experience many difficulties.

She often peeks into her children’s lessons. There is always pride and admiration when
hearing her children discuss, talk about ideas and opinions, and occasionally joking during
OHL. Even though meeting their friends at school is something irreplaceable, she feels at
ease seeing her children safe at home and able to learn well. Especially with the added fact
that they can eat lunch together everyday.

A movie that she highly recommends is The Greatest Showman; as it was the first time
where she fell in love with Hugh Jackman’s acting. She appreciates how he is able to show
his range of abilities, from portraying the fierce Wolverine in X-Men, to also singing,
dancing, and acting in The Greatest Showman. She mentioned that the movie also
encourages us not to be afraid to be different. Everybody has their own talents and
strengths. Passion and perseverance are the key to moving forward.

We can chat more with Ibu dr Yhossie through @izi_clinic
