FOREWORD Vol.5 / NOV-DEC 2021
From SBR's Curriculum Coordinator
Dear Students, Staff, and Families
Yet another semester has gone by so very quickly, and we have all done more, grown more and
learnt so much as a community here at SBR.
We have seen some amazing progress in our transition to on-campus learning and the support from
the community has been exceptional. There has been excellent collaboration and togetherness
between SBR, the local education and health authorities, educators from other schools, and of
course, our parents. All of this support and collaboration has enabled us to do the best we can for
our students every day during the transition to on-campus learning.
It has been wonderful to see students back in the classrooms and in the hallways, reconnecting with
their friends, teachers, and staff, getting that much needed interaction with others to stimulate their
social and emotional growth and wellbeing. And we are looking forward to even more on-campus
learning time as we move into the second semester.
We were excited to accelerate this with our vaccination program held on the last day of the
semester, where we were able to get almost 300 students vaccinated! These types of programs, as
well as ensuring that we are all being diligent about following the 5M protocols will help facilitate our
goal of a full return to on-campus learning.
In addition to working towards getting more students on-campus for their regular classes, we have
also been opening up more opportunities for students to explore their interests and passions outside
of these classes through our extracurricular program which was relaunched this year. We will be
looking to expand our extracurricular offerings in the second semester, so please be on the lookout
for additional information on these in the beginning weeks of the new year.
We are also excited to announce that Sekolah Bogor Raya, in collaboration with Learn with Leaders,
will host the Harvard Student Agencies Model United Nations (HSAMUN) Indonesia 2022. In line with
our vision and mission of promoting international-mindedness and global citizenship, this is another
fantastic opportunity for secondary students to deepen their understanding of the dynamics of
international relations by practicing in debate, negotiation, and creating solutions to the most
pressing global challenges of today.
As part of our commitment to continuously expanding and evolving our learning programs and overall
school improvements, we will soon be sending out our annual parent survey in order for us to get a
clear picture of how our school community perceives SBR and to help us identify our strengths and
areas for improvement. Additional information on this will be sent out early in the second semester.
All of us at SBR offer you our best wishes for a restful semester break. We hope that over the break
you take the chance to step away from the computer screen, reflect on all of the positive growth you
have shown over the past semester, and take the much needed time to recharge and reconnect with
family and friends.
We look forward to seeing you back on campus in January.
Warmly,
Benedict Rinne
Curriculum Coordinator

TIPS OF THE MONTH Vol.5 / NOV-DEC 2021
Andri Nurcahyani, Secondary School Principal
Success in School: Are Your Child’s Five Basic Needs Being
According to Dr. Glasser, all behavior is purposeful. One of the reasons for every behaviour is to meet one or
more of our basic human needs. These needs are the general motivation for everything we do. This theory also
applies to children. Our children also have 5 basic needs to fulfil.
A school whose culture meets these needs will reduce their students' behavior problems. As a parent, you can
amplify this effect by making sure these needs are met at home.
If parents meet their children’s five basic needs, they will be on the path to succeed in school and life. Why is it
important that these five basic needs are met? If one or more of these needs are not being met, a child will
spend a lot of energy and activity to get these needs met, they might break the rules or misbehave.
1.Survival - This need is a physiological need, which includes the need for food, shelter, and safety. Because
we have genetic instructions to survive, not only as individuals but as a species, this includes the need to
reproduce.
2.Love & Belonging - This need and the following three needs are psychological needs. The need to love and
belong includes the need for relationships, social connections, to give and receive affection and to feel part
of a group.
3.Power -To be powerful is to achieve, to be competent, to be skilled, to be recognized for our achievements
and skill, to be listened to and have a sense of self worth.
4.Freedom - The need to be free is the need for independence, autonomy, to have choices and to be able to
take control of the direction of one's life
5.Fun - The need for fun is the need to find pleasure, to play and to laugh. Should you doubt that this is as
important as any of the others, imagine a life without hope of any enjoyment. Glasser links the need for fun
to learning. All of the higher animals (dogs, dolphins, primates, etc.) play. As they play, they learn important
life skills. Human beings are no different. It is true that "play is a child's work."
A child whose control needs are not being met has a number of options. Some children
complain of a stomachache or a headache and ask to stay home. Some will join a gang or
get involved with a peer group who will help with control needs. Still others resort to drugs
or alcohol because the high they get gives them the feeling of control, even though it
actually does the exact opposite. Kids are very creative in how they get their control needs
met: they can create imaginary friends, have temper tantrums, go to their room and refuse
to come out, lock themselves in the bathroom or run away or threaten to run away. As a
parent, I suggest you look for ways your children are getting their control needs met. If
they are getting them met with negative behavior, they will not be successful in school.
Control
As a parent, it is very important to be in control of what happens to your children. If control is such an
important need for parents and children, how do you give control to your children without giving it up? The goal
is to get children to control their own behavior. When that does not happen, parents have to intervene and take
back control. Too much control, however, is a mistake! The secret to successful parenting is to give control
without giving it up. We want our children to make good decisions and be responsible. We don’t want them to
remain dependent on their parents. At some point we want them to be independent and capable of making
their own decisions.
Too much control is a mistake. An even bigger mistake for parents is to let their children control them. We have
all seen instances where the child is unruly and undisciplined and the parent does not exercise control. The big
question then is how do you give control without giving it up? A controlling parent tells their children what to
do. Parents who give control without giving it up provide choices and allow their kids to decide what they are
going to do.
2
TIPS OF THE MONTH Vol.5 / NOV-DEC 2021
Andri Nurcahyani, Secondary School Principal
If your child does not make an acceptable choice, you, as the parent, take control back and tell the child what
to do. For example, “When are you planning to do your homework?” “When are you going to take out the
trash?” “When are you going to get a haircut, clean up your room, turn off the TV, etc?” By asking these types
of questions, you alert your child to the behavior you want and give him or her the choice of telling you when it
will get done. You have given your child control, but did not give up control. If your child’s answer is
unacceptable, you take control back and tell him or her when to do it.
Life
Having some control over your life is a basic need, but being alive and having
moments of happiness are also basic needs. It seems obvious that everyone wants to
be alive and happy, but these needs are often overlooked for this very reason. Basic
to being alive and happy are a person’s health, and that is what parents should
focus on. Clothing, nutrition, exercise, fitness/weight, medication, sleep, etc.
Happiness
When it comes to happiness, parents should focus, in particular, on who their friends are? Friends have a
terrific impact on your child’s behavior and happiness. Being alive and happy is like a hand and glove. They go
together and balance each other. Happy children are very much alive and will be successful in school. Unhappy
kids will not succeed and must do something to restore the imbalance. What they tend to do is often negative.
Purpose
Kids need to have a purpose in their lives. Having some control in your life means nothing if your life does not
have a purpose. Approximately 50% of children go to school without a purpose. This results in a lack of
motivation and low test scores. Try to get your children to pick out what they want to do with their life. It does
not matter that their goals may change in a year or two. If they can’t focus on a goal, ask them to identify a
person or role model they like. An alternative is setting a goal just to get good grades.
Caring
The last of the five basic needs is for your children to know that
you care about them. The easiest way to show your kids that
you care is to “listen” to them. When you give your child
undivided attention and listen to them you are showing them
that you care. There are many other ways as well: go jogging
with them, attend their games and functions, tuck them into bed,
etc. There is a difference between loving them and caring about
them. Love is more of a feeling. It may be there, but it cannot
always be seen. Caring behaviors can be seen, and they are
also felt.
There will be times when you have to discipline or control your child. The manner in which this is done may
cause your child to believe that you don’t care about him or her. It is important to focus on the behavior that
needs to change rather than the child. You do not want your child to feel that you are angry with him or her. It
is the behavior, not the child, that is the problem. A typical discipline situation could go like this: “I care about
you and love you, but (identify the behavior that needs correcting) has to change.” End the discipline by asking,
“What can you do about that?” Remember to give control without giving it up.
Being a parent is one of the most challenging experiences for anyone because of the problems children can
create. On the other hand, being a parent is also one of life’s greatest accomplishments. I know all of you want
to be good parents and want your children to be successful. Do your best to meet their five basic needs, and
“give control without giving it up!” This is very important, because the four other needs are difficult to meet if a
person does not have some form of control.

It's nice to meet all K1 students face to face while following the
health protocol at school. The girls and the boys did a great job
adjusting to Outdoor Learning activities and routines. They
come to school with their parents or guardians. They start with
washing their hands, checking their temperature, and walking
through the arrows to our Outdoor Learning space.
We continue to learn about nursery rhymes, and we create the
craft based on the students' favorites. The teachers give them
the opportunity to choose one from the five nursery rhyme
characters learned in this theme. Doing this activity helps the
students develop their fine motor skills by coloring and pasting.
They also need to sing one of their favorite nursery rhymes.
From here, we can see that the students really enjoy joining the
Outdoor Learning activities.
The students also get the chance to sing in front of their friends.
Some of them are shy, but other students are able to sing with a loud
and clear voice in front of the class. These activities help the students
develop their self-confidence, enrich their vocabulary from the song,
and understand and experience new things. We are so excited about
the next session. It will be more fun on the next experience for all of
us!

PRIMARY SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
What a year! Finally, we have reached the end of the year with many new takeaways from
memorable school events. This volume shares with you how principled, risk-taking, caring,
knowledgeable, and reflective we are as members of the Sekolah Bogor Raya community. It
began with the commemoration of National Heroes Day which was uniquely celebrated in every
class; we remembered the values of leadership and nationality and respect for all people who are
risk takers and principled. The same spirit continued for National Teachers Day with the genuine
and different expressions of gratitude from our students.
The SBR Teachers are flattered and feel so blessed to receive the students’ appreciation. One of
the important gifts for teachers was the chance to meet their students in person which
happened during Grade 1 - 3 Friday Fun Learning and the School Tour for Grade 1 and 2! It was
exciting and energizing! And this year ended extraordinarily with the vaccination day! What a
busy, tiring, but exciting end of year! On behalf of the SBR community, thank you for all of the
love and support this year. Thank you for all the love and support from all members of the SBR
community. (DK)
National Teachers Day
Teachers’ Day is celebrated every November 25th to commemorate
the founding of Persatuan Guru Republik Indonesia (PGRI), the
National Indonesian Teachers’ Association (1945). On that day,
students, parents, and school management members worked
together to acknowledge the efforts made by all teachers in
Sekolah Bogor Raya and also teachers in Indonesia. Some students
were trained for several weeks on how to give their best
performance through gamelan, angklung performance, and last but
not least, the children’s choir. This performance was broadcast in
PGRI and watched by so many teachers throughout Indonesia. From
the Primary level, we had Githa, Elaine, Akbar, Raina, Lica, and Akia
for the gamelan team. We also had Jason, Aldenzio, Mada, Aimee,
Kirstie, Joanna, and Gywneth as the choir team. Even a poem read
by Gwyneth and Zivanka (a PGK student) was presented for
teachers to show how the school feels honored to have all teachers
who work with passion and love for education. Students from
kindergarten until secondary worked hand in hand to make the
performance something to be proud of and memorable. All the
students were so grateful to have support from their beloved
teachers.
Every class celebrated Teacher’s Day differently, yet all were given
the same message, “we love our teachers.” Flowers, cards,
scrapbooks, and cakes were designed to express their love and
appreciation. Thank you, Teachers! Thank you for helping to
educate this generation! You are doing a fantastic job!

Friday Fun Learning and School Tour 2021
Grade 1 FFL During the pandemic, there are several primary students who never have
Grade 2 FFL experienced learning onsite. They are the current Grade 1, Grade 2 and some
Grade 3 students. While other grades such as Grade 4 to 6 have been back to
school in a limited face to face learning model, the lower primary students only
hope they will be invited soon to have onsite learning experiences.
Every student needs to feel a sense of belonging to the learning community
they belong to. They need to develop their social skills and by interacting with
all members of the learning community. In the limited time and the need to
adjust with the new normal of learning in the face to face learning format, the
lower primary students finally were invited to experience short learning
activities in school along with their friends under very strict health protocols.
We are all very excited to welcome them, and feel joy with their spirit and enthusiasm. Grade 3 FFL
We finally can hear the cheers, laughters, cute voices from students and are able to see
their warm and genuine responses that represent how we all are longing to see each
other. The students are surprisingly aware of the health protocols, very confident to
do all stages of the protocols, which makes us very pleased and relieved to see they are
actually ready for having face to face learning.

We would like to thank all parents who are very cooperative and supportive during the events. We believe that parents
have done their best to accompany, support and also educate the students with the new habits during the pandemic that
make us very confident to open the school soon for them to learn on campus. Let’s hope the pandemic will pass soon!

them to get vaccinated. With the short notice from
the local government and a very quick preparation at
the end of the first semester, we are very pleased to
organize the vaccination on campus, which are also
supported by Mulia Hospital as the vaccinators.
Another evidence to see how brave, risk taker and
knowledgeable our students are! They are aware of
the importance of the vaccination and take the risk to
get vaccinated to be able to go back to school soon.
With genuine and full hearted support from the
teachers, there are no significant problems that
happen during the vaccination. All students and
parents are very cooperative and very supportive to
make the event run smoothly.
Again, thank you very much to all parents who are
willing to follow instructions and direction during the
vaccination. We hope we can work together again in
the second vaccination. And, our appreciation for
Mulia Hospital who initiated this program, and allow
us to work together with the kind hearted doctors,
vaccinators and supporting staff. Together we can!

vaccination
After being vaccinated, some side effects are normal and expected. Side effects
are a sign that your body is building immune protection.
Common side effects observed with COVID-19 vaccines include:
Some pain, swelling and redness on the arm where you received the vaccine
Chills or mild fever
Tiredness
Headaches
Joint pain or muscle ache
These side effects typically go away within a few days.
Prepare for your second vaccination appointment
Most COVID-19 vaccines need two doses to work. This means you need to be
vaccinated twice — with a gap of 4-12 weeks between the first and second dose.

Money Talk With Ibu Adra Sari “Duta Literasi dan Inklusi Keuangan”
Our Grade 2 Sekolah Bogor Raya students are in the middle of Theme 3: Where We Are In Place and Time, in
which we explore how people invent money and use money nowadays. They are so excited to discuss it. Many
questions pop up in every session during class discussion; especially when we are talking about Rupiah, starting
from the design of money until how to use it. To support our students' curiosity we met Ibu Adra Sari, Duta
Literasi dan Inklusi Keuangan.
Ibu Adra Sari shared lots about what money is; Rupiah, the function of
Bank Indonesia, the difference between Bank Indonesia and the other
banks in Indonesia, what our future money looks like, and how to
manage our money wisely. The students were amazed when Ibu Adra
explained that they couldn’t save their money in Bank Indonesia. Ibu
Adra also reminds Grade 2 students to always think about their needs if
they want to spend their money, and think 2 or 3 times more if they
want to buy something that they want. “Do I really need it? Is it what I
need or is it what I want?” At the end of her explanation, Ibu Adra also
reminds 2nd graders about the joy and benefit of saving money.
Even as the Q&A session came to close, the student’s excitement
continued. They exploded when one of the last students asked about the
type of currency. Most of them asked the teacher for permission to
show and share about their foreign currency with Ibu Adra Sari. Thank
you Ibu Adra Sari, it was a meaningful and wonderful sharing session.

...
On 26 November 2021, we had Mr John Edward Oliver as our speaker to share about his homeland, England.
He shared with us some insights about famous landforms and bodies of water that can be visited in England. He
also explained about the four seasons that can be experienced in England and how people can adapt to it. We
also got so much information related to some traditional food of England and on what occasion do people there
eat them. Mr John also showed us the video when he interviewed one of his Indonesian friends who lives in
England named Cindy. They discussed the way she can adapt to live from tropical zone country to temperate
zone country.
STEM teachers On 29 November 2021, we had
another expert visit from several
educators and teachers from
overseas. They are Mr Greg from
Australia, Ms Norris from
Colorado, USA and Ms Elizabeth
from Puerto Rico.
They came to our zoom meeting and explained about some
famous landforms and bodies of water that can be visited in their
country, the climate and seasons that can be experienced during a
whole year in their country, and also how people in their country
should adjust their habits according to each season. The habits
consist of: clothes, food or drink, and activities.
STEM teachers
At the end of the session, we had questions and answers about the topic being delivered by the experts. The
students were so excited with the presentation which can be seen when they asked questions about various
things to our experts. It surely becomes a new insight from the students to support their understanding about
how people can adapt to geographical conditions in some certain countries.

...
We had a very special visit from Pak Petrik Metanasi
who is a historian, a person who is an expert in history.
Pak Petrik is one of the contributors for Tirto ID and has
written many articles regarding the history of our
country. Pak Petrik shared his knowledge in
history, starting from the early civilizations, space trade
along the silk road, great explorers, world war I, world
war II, the Dutch invasion to Indonesia, sumpah
pemuda, Japanese invasion, the battle of Surabaya, and
of course introduced us to more great Indonesia heroes
such as Jendral Soedirman, Bung Tomo, Ki Hajar
Dewantara, and many more.
The Grade 4 students learned that our history changed
and shaped our world today, from the early civilizations
to Indonesia’s struggle to independence. We learned
about courage, bravery, not giving up on difficult
situations, and most of all we learned to love and
appreciate our country even more than ever.
Virtual Trip to ANRI Diorama Sejarah Perjalanan Bangsa
The Grade 4 students had a wonderful opportunity to do a
virtual trip to ANRI: Diorama Sejarah Perjalanan Bangsa.
ANRI is our source to explore more about the history of
Indonesia, particularly related to Indonesia’s road to
independence. ANRI provided an extensive collection of
statues, dioramas of historical events, and endless
information about Indonesia’s history.
The students did a tour around the ANRI building to get more
knowledge about many historical events such as sumpah
pemuda, the battle of Surabaya, the struggle of Indonesian.
people during the Dutch and Japanese colonization. The
pictures, paintings and the 3D dioramas that were provided by
ANRI, really helped us to understand and got a clear image of
our country’s struggle to fight against the enemies. ANRI also
provided us with a guide and 2 cameramen that really helped
us answer questions and explained many things about the
history of Indonesia.
We also learned that many young Indonesian people died and
sacrificed their lives for our country’s independence. The
students realized that we need to appreciate what our
national heroes had done for us and for Indonesia.

Coping with Puberty is Newsworthy for Teenagers
Puberty is a crucial process that every teenager will experience during
adolescence. It's important to note that every teenager goes through
these common changes. These changes are not only physical, but also
psychological and affect cognition, affection, and social relationships.
Students in Grade 5 need to be prepared in order to face these complex
changes that will occur throughout these periods of puberty.
The wonderful session with Dr. Yhossie Suananda, MARS and Pak Bayu
Alzihan about puberty has helped our 5th graders learn more about the
changes that puberty will cause, before they occur. Now the students
will know what to expect during that period, such as how to accept the
physical changes, how to deal with and maintain their personal hygiene
and how to respond to the ups and downs of the types of emotions that
will occur.
In this sharing session, Dr. Yoshi discussed parts of the male and female
reproductive organs and how they work in order to support the
reproductive system of humans. The discussion ran well and Dr. Yoshi
was open to all possible topics of discussion and inquiries coming from
the students. Some students came up with inquiries such as why is it
only girls that have periods? It also discusses how to do self-care in the
period of menstruation for girls. Some students were also asking about
how to maintain personal hygiene during the period of puberty for boys
and how it relates to the importance of circumcision for boys. Pak Bayu
also shares to the boys about how they cope with their emotions and
personal care.
This students’ sharing session with dr. Yoshi will be continued
to the further discussion session with the school counselors in
the following week. By having this sharing session, hopefully
the students are able to understand the concept of the puberty
and reproduction system, as well as getting ready to the
puberty physical and emotional changes they need to face.

What are Genotypes and Phenotypes?
Homozygous genes, heterozygous genes, alleles, dominant genes
and recessive genes are just some of the terms you might come
across when learning about genotypes and phenotypes. During
their last line of inquiry in this theme, Grade 5 are trying to answer
the question: “How are traits passed along?” Dr. Miranti helped the
students to understand more about this line of inquiry along with
all of the difficult terms mentioned before.
Dr. Miranti showed lots of different types of animals. Some dogs
are big and tall, some are short. Huskies have different fur colors
and some cats have different eye colors. She also showed some new
breeds of animals which are a result of crossbreeding. Breeders will
crossbreed animals and the rarer the animal’s appearance, the

She explained how the traits of the parents’ affect their offspring.
From the genotypes and phenotypes during crossbreeding, students
learned about the probability/ ratio of the animal’s offsprings in the
future. They also learned how dominant and recessive traits affect
the physical appearance of animals.
The students asked many questions, such as “Why do we have to
learn about genes?” and “How can we know which traits are
dominant or recessive?”. The students were very engaged in this
sharing session and asked lots of questions enthusiastically.
One Fine Day with Kak Nanda Noor - WRI
“If we want to survive, we need to change the way we do things”
It was a pleasure to meet Kak Nanda Noor from WRI. He shared lots about the current situation of the
environment, such as the pollution that stays in our atmosphere, the impact of climate crisis and the global
population growth. Kak Nanda emphasised how concerning the situation is nowadays, where the earth is
getting warmer and warmer, the polar ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising and increased temperatures
are causing extreme weather conditions such as drought and floods.
Kak Nanda said that if we want to survive, we need to change the way we do things. He shared some tips
entitled “Treat - Create - Select - Reduce - Reuse - Recycle” which we can use in our daily lives. For example, we
should treat our clothes well and not waste them. We should also be more selective with the clothing items we
wear. We should reuse plastic products, recycle what we have and use electricity wisely. Emissions are a
serious problem and private transportation produces the most emissions. Therefore we should try to limit the
amount of private transportation we use. We can also take action to absorb emissions by planting trees and
blue mangroves.

able to ask lots of questions about the relationship
between acid rain and climate change, whether or not the
world will sink if there is still global warming in the future,
whether or not music contributes to climate change and
how best to manage medical waste. We felt so satisfied to
hear Kak Nanda’s answers. He reminded us about how
acid rain makes the climate even worse but there are not
many ways to reduce it because it is a natural process.
There are lots of musicians and songwriters that talk
about the impact of human help to address climate
change. Music is a great tool which can help change
people's feelings and emotions.
It helps to address people’s feelings for the environment. Finally, he also shared
how to manage medical waste. Sensitive waste that still contains the biological
toxicity of diseases should not be thrown away or managed together with
electrical waste and other waste. If the other waste is not treated well, it will
also contaminate nature. We can try to pick medical treatments that have less
packaging, avoid sickness first, consume more healthy food and less chemical
medicines, maintain our health rather than focusing on medicine to cure the
disease while waiting for the technology and marketing to produce better
medical treatment. In the end, prevention is better than cure. Thank you Kak
Nanda for opening our eyes and helping us be more aware of the environment.

Getting to Know Ourselves with Kak Nabiilah
“Our uniqueness makes us who we truly are”
What a great session we had with Kakak Nabiilah as part of our exhibition journey. She shared lots about the
beauty of loving ourselves and has inspired us to get to know ourselves better. She shared the importance of
having self love as part of our uniqueness. By reflecting back on our About Me mind map, Kakak Nabiilah has
taught us to make friends with the changes. Changes will happen anywhere and anytime. The best way to
adapt to these changes is to love ourselves more, to accept our strengths and weaknesses and to be able to
accept any changes that happen in our life.

Kakak Nabiilah morally. When we have accepted our insecurities, we
can be more appreciative of ourselves. We were also
given facts about how our self-concept is affected by the

Grade 1 “Habis gelap terbitlah terang.”
-RA. Kartini-
In commemorating Our National Heroes
Day, grade 1 students discussed RA
Kartini, one of the inspirational women in
Indonesia. The students used an RA.
Kartini picture for the virtual background
and sang “Ibu Kita Kartini” song.
The students also got some exposure to short biographies of RA Kartini. They
learned how she influenced the education system, especially for Indonesian
women. The students got to know that a long time ago, Indonesian girls did
not have the same chance to obtain a good education as the boys did. The
students also mentioned that they were lucky to get a chance for good
education. The students learned that one thing that they can do as a hero is to
do their best in their studies.
National Teachers day Another special day is National Teachers Day on
25th November. Grade 1 students commemorate
this special day with a simple yet meaningful
celebration. They shared a lovely greeting for the
teachers through pictures and virtual
backgrounds. The teachers felt grateful to receive
the warm and lovely greeting from the students.
Thank you, our beloved students!
Friday Fun Learning
Time flies! Now, we are in the last month of term 2. December is a special month for the students since we had
“Friday Fun Learning”. It wasn’t only the students who were excited to come to school, but also the teachers
were quite excited to meet the students. Thank God, the activity ran well on that day. We can see the
excitement and happiness in the students' eyes. Let’s pray to God that the condition will get better really soon so
that we can meet every day at school, students. (FR)

Grade 2 The Thinker: Drs. Mohammad Hatta
“Dengan Buku, Aku Bebas”
-Hatta-
Hari Pahlawan or National Heroes Days’ which is commemorated every
November 10, has a heroic meaning to the Indonesian people. Indonesia
commemorates the services of the heroes that have made a significant
contribution to the country so that Indonesia could be an independent
country. To celebrate this event, Grade 2 students discussed national
heroes on Indonesian bill notes; Rupiah. One of their favorites is Drs.
Mohammad Hatta, the first vice president of Indonesia that they found
in Rp. 75.000 and Rp. 100.000 bill notes.
Grade 2 students were amazed after they watched the biography video of Drs. Mohammad Hatta. They even
found interesting facts about Bung Hatta such as their hobby and interest in reading. They couldn’t imagine how
Bung Hatta managed to get many books to read at that time. Yes, Bung Hatta really loved books, he realized that
it was impossible for him to understand the state of the world at that time if not for books. As he stated “ I
volunteer to go to prison as long as there are books. Because with books I am free”. This inspired the students to
show their book collection at home and they were super excited to read them in front of their teacher.
Another moment to be celebrated was “Hari Pahlawan Tanpa Tanda
Jasa '' or National Teacher’s day. Grade 2 students celebrated this
special day by having a warm circle time discussion session. In this
session, the students made a sweet and warm greeting not only to the
teachers but also to their parents. It was a lovely session where the 2nd
graders showed their love to their teachers by showing their crafts;
cards, zoom virtual background, and pictures, and their love to their
parents by hugging and saying thank you to them.
Heading into December, Grade 2 students were
super excited to meet their teachers in the
school. They had a blast during Friday's Fun
Learning session that was held offline! Their
excitement continued as after the event, they
shared their wishes for 2022; through a padlet
they reflected on the year and wished that they
could learn and play in the school again soon.
Yes, we hope these wishes come true next year.
Let’s maintain our health, follow the health’s

Grade 3 Yeay! It’s Our Epic Month!
“A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.”
The quote above reminds us about 2 special days that we have in this month. November cannot be more
meaningful without two special commemorations in Indonesia: National Heroes Day and National Teachers
Day. It can be said that both of these special days have something to do with the “strength of a heart”.
On 10 November 2021, we introduced grade 3 students to Bapak Jendral Sudirman, one of the Indonesian
National Heroes who are well-known for his bravery. The students were so excited and had a great discussion
to know more about Jendral Sudirman’s biography and his struggles to defend our independence. They finally
understand why Sudirman is highly-respected in Indonesia and why his name is used to be the name of the
office area in Central Jakarta. At the end of the discussion, the student identified several great characteristics
that they can learn from Jendral Sudirman such as being brave, not giving up easily, and always giving your best
even in your worst condition.
On 25 November 2021, we celebrated The National Teachers Day. In
commemorating this special day, grade 3 students shared their gratitude to
their teachers during circle time. They thanked their teachers for always
supporting them during the learning process. It was such a great moment to
see how the students were so grateful to their teachers.
Making video presentation using Powtoon The students kept on doing great things in theme 3. Right now, we are at the
end of the “Where We Are in Place and Time” theme. In this theme, we learn
how humans adapt to a variety of climates and geographical conditions. We
have fun activities and exciting discussions about it. We learned about the
climate and geographical conditions of places around the world, the change of
geographical and climate conditions, and human adaptation to the climate and
geographical condition. The students have given their best effort to explore
the climate and geographical conditions of their chosen country and made a
video presentation about it using Powtoon.
To end the year of 2021 and welcome the new year of 2022, grade 3 students wrote down their wishes and
resolutions for the new year. Most of them wished that the condition would get better so that they would be able
to go back to school. They also listed down some resolutions for themselves to be a better student next year. Well

The month of November is always special for our country Indonesia. We celebrate National Heroes Day (Hari
Pahlawan) on November 10th. This event is in sync with our Theme 4: Where We Are In Place and Time, in which
we explored world history as well as Indonesian history.
The Grade 4 students got to know Abdulrachman Saleh who was one of our national heroes. Abdulrachman Saleh
was one of the founders of Radio RRI, and was also in the Air Force as a pilot. Bapak Abdulrachman Saleh was
more than just a military officer. He also studied medicine and became an expert in Biology. To honour his legacy,
the name Abdulrachman Saleh was used as the name of a local airport in Malang, East Java.
While on the same note of celebrating Indonesia’s Heroes Day, the Grade 4 had an expert visit, Bapak Petrik
Metanasi who is a historian; and also had the opportunity to do a virtual trip to ANRI Diorama Sejarah Perjalanan
Bangsa.
National Heroes Day: Abdulrachman Saleh
November’s special Day: National Teachers Day was
the one for the books. The students kept wishing us
happy teacher’s day and repeatedly telling us how
grateful they are to have school even though we are still
in the middle of the pandemic. Some students created
posters, slideshows, and cards on national teachers day.
As we all know we are approaching the end of the year
2021. The Grade 4 students had reflection sessions
about their achievements, struggles, lessons and all the
memories throughout the year. The students compiled
the best things about school in semester one in the

Grade 5 Timeless Struggle: dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo
Grade 5 activities in remembering the heroes struggle: November 10 is celebrated as National Heroes Day every year.
dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo The purpose is to commemorate the services of the heroes who
died on the battlefield, both in fighting for Indonesia's
independence and defending it. Many Indonesian heroes have
devoted their souls and bodies to the independence of
Indonesia, one of which was dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo.
We may already know one of the best Indonesian hospitals in
Jakarta, namely dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM). The name
was taken from a freedom fighter who was born in Jepara,
Central Java, on March 4, 1886. A person who spread ideas
against the colonialists and was critical of the colonial
government of the Dutch East Indies with two of his friends, Ki
Hajar Dewantara and Douwes Dekker. He was also a doctor
who was instrumental in overcoming the bubonic plague that
attacked Malang, East Java in 1910 and refused the Ridder in
de Orde van Oranje Nassau star award because he was not
allowed to participate in eradicating the bubonic plague in Solo.
National Heroes' Day is the right moment to introduce the
story of the struggle of Indonesian heroes. Like the 5th graders
at the Bogor Raya School who have known more about dr.
Cipto, they were then asked to write down what lessons they
could take from this hero. There were many interesting
responses written by students, some of which were Angie from
5A who wrote “Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo is very brave because
he created an organization whose target was for the
independence of Indonesia and to fight against the invaders.”
Phillip from 5B wrote, “Dr. Cipto Mangun Kusumo was brave
because he went to a city full of bubonic plague.” Akia from 5C
wrote, “He was a good person because he helps others and
always studies diligently in his school.”
Ir. Sukarno once said that a great nation is a
nation that does not forget the services of its
heroes. National Heroes Day is the perfect
moment to remember the timeless struggle of
our heroes. (SN).

National Teacher Day
Indonesia eagerly commemorates “Hari Guru Nasional” every 25
November, the same day of the birthday of PGRI (Persatuan Guru
Republik Indonesia). This year, the government of Indonesia through
its Department of Education, Culture Research and Technology
promotes this national teacher celebration with the title: “Bergerak
dengan hati - pulihkan pendidikan”. Teachers nowadays have roles not
only teaching, guiding, assisting, grading, and evaluating the students,
but also shaping and nurturing the students to build the good
characters within them. These purposes will be accomplished by
having the sense of affection and heart to reach and help the students
to perform excellently in the areas of academics, as well as its
character building.
There are some projects that reflect these topics in Grade 5, such as
making puisi untuk guru, creating cards for teachers, making word
using https://www.wordclouds.com/, creating acrostic Poem about
teachers using http://www.acrosticpoem.org/. The teachers were also
telling the stories about the history of Hari Guru Nasional. We also set
up a virtual background of Hari Guru Nasional to evoke the euphoria.
Selamat Hari Guru Nasional, ibu guruku (ABK).

recent months, Sekolah Bogor Raya has started to open the school for the students to come. Grade 5 students
also have had a great opportunity to have offline class once a week within these last two months. In-person
learning affects the students in different ways. They begin to feel the nuance of the normal school day, meet
teacher and friends in person, have conversations face-to-face, as well as have the opportunity to learn in the
real classroom setting. We encourage the students to always be grateful for what we have been through since
they have consistent support from their parents, teachers, and beloved friends. What a dynamic semester! Stay

We discussed his legacy as Bapak

modernization but also promoted
indigenous Indonesian culture in the

We thought of a good way to celebrate his legacy by showing our gratitude and trying to think of something that we
can actually do in recent times related to education. Surely, we were amazed to witness his caring for education in
Indonesia. Without Bapak Ki Hajar Dewantara or other heroes that have fought for education, we would not be
here right now. Once again, thank you Bapak Ki Hajar Dewantara and Selamat Hari Pahlawan!
Happy Indonesian Heroes Day A fun game to know each others during our Exhibition preparation
Another moment to be celebrated was National Teachers Day on the 25th of November. It’s a moment for every
educator to remember the importance of having self-love as a teacher. Even though we cannot have a huge
celebration over Zoom, we had a warm circle time in each class where students shared a sweet greeting video or

show through Zoom from SBR as one community. Proud to be part of SBR!
Heading on to December, the holiday is coming soon. It means we are preparing for the exam and the final project
for our theme 3, Sharing the Planet. On top of that, we are also preparing for our Exhibition that will be held during
theme 4 starting in January 2022. We have started the sessions with many activities that inspired us to dig deeper

The Student Council is a key part of a school’s student body.
With COVID-19 still looming over the community, the
Student Council of numerous different schools, including
SBR, has to find ways to effectively communicate amidst the
pandemic.
Annually, the SBR Student Council holds Forum OSIS, in
which Student Council officers from different schools
exchange their ideas and thoughts about the Student
Council. Recognizing how crucial organizational
communication is during this pandemic, 2021’s online
Forum OSIS had the theme of “The Importance of Effective
Organizational Communication in the Pandemic.” The event
was held on the 12th of November, 2021 through Zoom,
and an astounding amount of students from 6 schools (SPH
Sentul City, Karunia Global School Jambi, BPK Penabur
Bogor, Mentari Intercultural School Grand Surya, SMA
Kolese Gonzaga, and Mentari Intercultural School Bintaro)
joined the SBR Student Council in this event!
One of our key activities during Forum OSIS 2021 was the Student Council Presentations! From
fascinating events to communication platforms, this session gave the opportunity for the
representatives of each school to share about their team, whilst learning from the unique qualities of
other Student Councils!
The highlight of the event came through our Guest Speaker Summit! During the session, we got the
opportunity to listen to our esteemed guest speaker, Leonardo Andre Kusuma, regarding leadership
and organizational communication! Kak Andre, being a highly experienced person in the field of
leadership, was able to share beneficial advice to us on how to ensure effective organizational
communication and leadership amidst this pandemic.
We implemented what we learnt from Kak Andre through our case building activity, where we were
divided into groups and given an organizational case which we had to identify the problems and find the
solutions for. Critical thinking and communication are crucial qualities of a Student Council officer, and
this session was perfectly arranged to train this!
For us delegates who participated in the event, we found it exceedingly enjoyable; meeting such a
diverse range of Student Council officers was an experience like no other. Our experience was
especially great when we presented our current conditions in our schools. Through this, we the
delegates have been able to consume and absorb a litany of experiences and achievements, which we
can later funnel into our endeavors. The experience of the event was only further alleviated through
the various fun activities and icebreakers.

The inauguration of the Satgas COVID-19 Pelajar was held on the 22nd of November, 2021. The event hosted
warm greeting messages from Pak Sandi as the advisory board and Pak Fitra as the supervisor of the Satgas
COVID-19 Pelajar team. The inauguration was then led with a motivating speech by our principal, Ibu Andri.
The team was officially inaugurated with the members below:

community. Members of the team, especially the monitoring department,
would circle the school grounds to ensure that health protocols were
being properly implemented. The members were tasked with reminding
their peers about the protocols, or with patrolling the area to check for
any violations of the health protocols. The issues they have found
frequently are the lack of social distancing along with the wrong use of
masks. We believe that through continuous monitoring in the following
terms, we will be able to eradicate these issues from the SBR community.
Furthermore, we were recently given the opportunity to present during
our December 2021 General Assembly! Our supervisor, Pak Fitra, firstly
introduced our team to our peers and the teachers. Our vice head, Daniel,
along with a member of our Sosialisasi dan Komunikasi team, Radya, then
delivered a presentation prepared by our media department to the
secondary school community about our student organization’s purpose
and COVID-19 health protocols. We hope that through this presentation,
our secondary school community has become more aware of the
organization and its purpose, along with what they can do to maintain
health protocols.

Computer Programming Club: Code our Way
The Computer Programming Club is one of the available
SLCs in Sekolah Bogor Raya. In the club, students learn how
to think computationally, solve problems, and apply them
when making a program. Like any other SLCs, the Computer
Programming Club is held once a week; every Wednesday at
4:20 p.m. after school.
In the Computer Programming Club, the students learn the basics of
programming, such as learning about the development life cycle,
identifying important information, and breaking down complex problems
into simpler, bite-sized problems that can be easily solved step-by-step.
They are also given exposure to software development programs, which
in this case, are video games, so they may grow their ideas to develop
their own instead of just merely playing games in their spare time.
As part of the activity of the club, students were given a project
to develop their own video game using a game engine (Construct
3) so they can showcase their ability, newfound knowledge, and
passion in developing software. They were also encouraged to
collaborate with their fellow members should they wish to
undertake a slightly bigger project of their own.
When asked about what the students thought about the club, they expressed that while it may seem
daunting, it is very interesting because it is not only something new, but also helps them find their passion in
programming and create something they had never imagined otherwise using their computer. Hopefully as
time goes on, students will begin to find each of their respective passions in certain fields, be it software
development, web programming, game development, or perhaps even all at once while maintaining their
academic performance. (JI)

VIDEO EDITING CLUB
The Video Editing Club is one of the interesting SLCs in Sekolah Bogor Raya Secondary that allows the
students to learn and improve their skills in editing videos using various kinds of video editing software
applications. The same as other clubs, this club is conducted once a week, every Friday at 10 a.m. during the
asynchronous session.
The most interesting thing about this activity is that the students themselves, especially for grade 10, are the
instructors to lead the club. These students usually lead the weekly meeting under the supervision of the
teacher, guiding the members to learn and practice video editing. The software applications used in this video
editing activity are adobe premiere, cute cut, clipchamp and many others.
As part of activity in this club, usually at the end of the semester, students will do a project to record a video
and edit by themselves and will then show it to other members. Besides, the members of this club may have
the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills in video editing using the software application they are an
expert in.
When the students were asked to give their opinion regarding this club, they were really having a great
moment since they were not only learning something new, but they had been given such wonderful time to
share their knowledge and skills in video editing. For some students, this video editing club has been a great
activity since they are also developing and sharpening their communication and presentation skills while
presenting their work. Hopefully, this club will run well with new innovation from time to time to help the
SBR secondary students to grow up in many positive aspects, academic performances and such great skills.

BORNEO DEFORESTATION, THE REAL THREAT
TO INDONESIA ORANGUTAN
As one of the Student Leadership Clubs in SBR Secondary school, BOSF SBR in recent weeks, has highlighted
deforestation activities in Kalimantan. This is one of the focuses of BOSF, which has found that deforestation
is massive and is one of the reasons why orangutans are increasingly threatened
The rate of deforestation is also destroying the habitat of endangered animals such as orangutans. "We must
act now and as quickly as possible to save the forests of Borneo," said one of the BOSF SBR members.
Kalimantan is currently inhabited by about 11 million people,
including one million indigenous people, spread across
Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia.
Logging and forest fires are a major threat to the habitat and
population of orangutans. According to the latest data, in
Kalimantan there are about 56,000 orangutans in the wild.
However, due to logging, and being exacerbated by forest fires
that occur every year, the current population of orangutans is
estimated at 30,000 – 40,000.
According to the Borneo OrangUtan Survival Foundation (BOSF), 16
baby orangutans in a rehabilitation forest in Nyaru Menteng, Central
Kalimantan, are experiencing health problems due to exposure to
haze. There is no information yet on how many orangutans died as a
result of the forest fires. However, BOSF believes that many
orangutans are unable to save themselves from the fires that hit the
forest.
During the forest fires that caused thick smog, orangutans were
observed to go to bed earlier than usual, i.e. between 14:30 – 15:00.
Under normal conditions, orangutans sleep at 17:00. And during the
smog disaster, the orangutans sleep longer. Usually orangutans wake
up at 04:30-05:00, but now they wake up around 06:00.
The reduction in forest area and quality in Kalimantan poses a
serious threat to various endangered species in Kalimantan, including
orangutans, proboscis monkeys, sun bears and various types of
gibbons. These rare animals are squeezed between the narrowing of
the forest which is their habitat and poaching.
Even as a result of the forest fires that occurred in the Kalimantan Forest in 2021, many wild animals that lived
in the forest were found dead. A number of orangutans have to be willing to leave the forest to save
themselves. Even some orangutans have to be carried by officers to get out of their habitat which has become
charcoal. A few also come to residential areas to survive.
Based on this data and also from knowledge in the fields of environment and biology, BOSF SBR students are
currently making a simulation of a forest restoration plan without disregarding the environment and industrial
growth.

SPEECH CLUB
From politicians to sports commentators, speeches are an essential tool
for persuasion and gathering your audience. Being able to articulate
your speech has become one of the main indicators for one’s
collaboration and linguistic skills, as it deeply indulges one’s analysis
and public speaking skills.
Understanding how important developing such skills are in school for
preparation for the working world, the speech club works to prime
students to get out of their comfort zone in making speeches. We
understand that it may be a gruesome process for some, especially for
people who are shy! However, our principal is that everyone can make
a great speech - as it is just a matter of finding what you are eager to
talk about. Hence, here in the speech club, where we encourage
students to write a speech on something they are passionate about.
We are very proud to see that our club members have taken noble roles in speaking about a variety of principal
environmental, human rights, and other prevalent issues happening in the world now. Then, through our club
system of peer feedback, impromptu speaking practice, and training on creating hooks, aids, and other essential
speech qualities, we are able to shape our skills together as a club. It is, to say the least, very refreshing to see
speech club members collaborate together in such a supportive environment for moving forward together in
public speaking. Thank you to all speech club members for this great experience!

TEACHER'S DAY
To commemorate Teachers’ Day, which was held on 25th November 2021,
Sekolah Bogor Raya’s SMP Student Council created several activities in order to
express our appreciation and acknowledgements towards the hard work of
teachers. By holding this event, students of Sekolah Bogor Raya were able to
convey their thankfulness towards teachers through different activities, and they
were also able to strengthen their relationship with each other.
The theme of this year’s Teachers’ Day was “Appreciating the Online or Hybrid
Educators in SBR”. The activities included e-gifts in the form of e-cards that
included messages from students to teachers, physical gifts, and a thank you song
and performance video. This year, the Student Council was able to send about
100 e-gifts to teachers!
The Student Council also managed to send physical gifts that could be purchased in
packages. These physical gifts included a variety of things and were delivered directly to
the teacher’s respective classrooms. The Student Council also initiated the thank you and
performance video activity. This activity entailed students from respective classes to film a
short thank you video in which later would be compiled into one for each class.
The Student Council are very honoured and grateful to have had the opportunity to show
our gratitude to the teachers. With that being said, happy Teachers’ Day to all teaching
and non-teaching staff of Sekolah Bogor Raya! (JL)

Annual Language Competition
The Annual Language Competition 2021, is an event organized by Bogor Raya
Secondary School as a forum for students at the junior and senior high school levels
to display their talents and abilities in the field of language. It includes several
competitions that accommodate not only the use of English as an international
language, but also Indonesian as the language of unity in our beloved country.
Bogor Raya Secondary School successfully held the Annual Language Competition 2021 from 2 October to 1
November. The Awarding Ceremony was held on November 5, 2021. This year's ALC is the 6th ALC since it
was first held in 2018, and the second time it has been conducted online.
Under the direction of Mr. Ardiles Septuaginta and the hard work of the ALC 2021 committee from Bogor Raya
Secondary School, this year’s ALC held: speech, storytelling, poetry reading, short story writing, and storytelling
competitions, and was successfully participated by more than 180 participants from 40 different schools from
various cities in Indonesia. In addition to the 1st and 2nd place winners, there was also the awarding of the
favorite winner category, which was judged by the number of likes on the official Bogor Raya Secondary school
YouTube channel. An interesting fact is that one of the participants of ALC 2021 managed to collect more than
3000 likes on his video within two days. This was amazing!
Hopefully in 2022, the Annual Language Competition can
be held offline at Sekolah Bogor Raya campus, so that the
excitement of the competition atmosphere, the tension of
the participants, and the happy expressions of the winners
can be witnessed directly by everyone as in previous years.
Something worth celebrating after working hard to
compete in this competition. (AS)

VIRTUAL UNIVERSITIES INFORMATION DAY (VUID) 2021
We, Sekolah Bogor Raya, provide effective, virtual-meeting media between universities/educational
consultants, and high school students, to help them understand and know the courses that suit their talents,
interests, and abilities, with a variety of careful considerations.
Students need to be reunited with educational institutions that may be
used as a place to advance their education to a further level. In an effort to
introduce students at the higher education level, Sekolah Bogor Raya, in
collaboration with Edlink Connections, held a Virtual University
Information Day (VUID) 2021 on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 from 09.00
- 13.00. This activity was held to inform students in opening horizons of
knowledge on how the progress of higher education institutions in
supporting efforts to achieve their goals.
There were 50 representatives from universities in Indonesia and internationally. In this event, we did not just
visit booths, download brochures and see the university facilities, but we were also able to join their
presentation and ask anything to every university and representative.
We are glad that we can support our students for their future career plan. (FS)

Webinar Sumpah Pemuda 2021
By: Giselle Inara
On October 28, 2021, ninety-three years ago, Indonesian young people made the historical day called
Sumpah Pemuda, that leads all Indonesians to be united in one homeland, nation, and language. This was the
historic moment that created the foundation of all that our nation and all its citizens are today. As we looked
back on November 10th, our young heroes had protected Indonesia from the coming back of the colony. This
event is commemorated every year with events in the spirit of celebration. Traditionally, the SBR community
would take part in the celebration, as well as by organizing events held by the Student Council & Class
Representatives
Sekolah Bogor Raya invited a special guest speaker, Virdiky Rizky Utama, a journalist and writer whose
concerns on history, state, and governance, who has vast knowledge about the history of Sumpah Pemuda
and Indonesian Heroes and share with students virtually how we fill this Indonesian independence era by
being wonderful students.
To conclude, this yearly webinar was held to highlight past brave actions taken by the Indonesian youth, to
inspire those in the students of SBR to personally take action in injustice, and how SBR students, as the
future generation, need to keep an open mind and stay well-informed students in this era.

"WE" COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS Vol.5 / NOV-DEC 2021
LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR ALUMNI
Nathaniel A. Surya (Nathan) was born in January 2003.
He joined SBR in 2005 and graduated from Grade 12 in
June 2021. He achieved the highest possible score (45)
in the IB Diploma and is currently a student at the
Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany working
towards a Mechatronics Bachelor Degree with a full
scholarship.
Nathan’s hobbies are playing the piano, learning
mathematics and history, playing video games, and
learning about technology.
Below is the strategy that he applies to achieve the
best results in learning:
1.Having the right mindset. See every assignment and
every new topic that you discover as a chance to
test out what you have learnt, and a chance to
learn and discover more about the subject that you
are learning.
2.Have a happy heart. He wouldn’t deny that the
IBDP is very demanding and might be stressful at
times. The key however is to have a happy heart in
everything you do. This will allow you to focus more,
enjoy the things that you do, and more importantly
persevere, no matter the challenges you face.
The transition SBR had from the IGCSE to the IBDP was
very memorable for him. Firstly, because finishing the
IB Diploma Programme would allow him to go to
university in Germany directly. The normal route is
through the Studienkolleg program, which lasts around
2 years after high school, so he is thankful for the IBDP
program.
In 2019, he and his family went to some of the top
universities in Germany to inquire about the academic
requirements needed to study there, and they found out
that the IBDP score requirements were very high. This
is related to his second memorable experience, which is
that he was a part of the first IBDP batch in SBR.
35
"WE" COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS Vol.5 / NOV-DEC 2021
LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR STUDENT
It was not easy, for him, his friends and SBR teachers as it was all a new
experience to them. It was also hard for him to ask for advice, specifically
relating to IBDP experience for universities in Germany, as we had no
IBDP seniors yet at the time. It felt very nerve-wracking at times (nerve-
wracking in a good way of course). Through hard work and perseverance,
he was able to pull through and achieved his best for this IB Diploma
Programme. It was also made possible from the commitment and support
of the teachers (who never stopped working in guiding us throughout the
program), as well as his friends’ support, but most of all a very special
mention to his parents who helped to support and guide him throughout
the entire program. They continuously motivated him in the toughest of
times and provided valuable life lessons, many of which in the end helped
him to achieve the top score in the IB Diploma Programme and his dream
of being able to study in Germany.
Performing well in IBDP is not only about memorizing what is in the syllabus. It requires a much more solid
understanding of every single topic that we learn and the ability to apply that knowledge actively
throughout the program. Thus, a good tip is that every time we learn something new in class, immediately
start doing the tasks that our teachers give us, as well as ones we can find on our IB books. They are a
really good way to test how much we have understood the topics.
The second tip is to manage our time well and to not
procrastinate. The IBDP is a 2-year programme, and
we have to make the most out of it. That means, that as
soon as our teachers have introduced us to how the
IBO will assess us, as well as the assessment criteria
(such as the EE, IAs, and so on), we should immediately
begin doing these. This will keep us on track, and we
can apply the new ideas and insights that we gain with
every class. We will be able to get most of the work
done by the time we start Grade 12, and this will
ensure that we have much more time to review for the
final exams.
The final tip he wants to give us is to really balance our school and private life. Studying is very important
of course, but do not overstudy. If we know we need a break, then take it. If we need to spend time with
our parents and sibling(s), or with our friends, then we should do it. Sometimes, we reach the point where
we feel tired and unmotivated, and really the best way to deal with that is to refresh ourselves.
For him personally, he loves this motto by Sam Altman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI: “Hard work
compounds like interest, and the earlier you do it, the more time you have for the benefits to pay
off.”

LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR TEACHER
Ibu Fitria Wulandari Santoso (Ibu Wulan)
was born on September 14, 1977 and she
has been a teacher at Sekolah Bogor Raya
since 2001. She received her bachelor's
degree from Indonesia University majoring
in English Literature, and she finished her
teacher education from Universitas
Terbuka.
Being a teacher for her is a “calling”. It is about lifetime learning. She always experiences
something new and sometimes faces challenges - especially in adapting to the new online
and hybrid learning methods of instruction. She needs to adapt and keep up with the rapidly
evolving technology.
Her most unforgettable experience is when
she was able to go on a school camping trip
with her students, where she and the
students could share love and laughter.
Seeing them achieve their goals and grow
to be more independent really makes her
proud as a teacher.
Her motto is “Life isn't about having what
we want. It's about wanting what we have.
Always be grateful”.

LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR PARENT
Ibu Susy Haryanti (Susy) is a parent of one of SBR's alumni, Nathaniel A. Surya who graduated from SBR
in June 2021, and one of SBR's Primary School students, Matthew I. Surya. Ibu Susy works as a
CFO/Board of Directors for an American company in Jakarta.
She loves reading books about self-development and enjoys writing reflections, life experiences, and to
be able to share these with others, especially to the youth to achieve their best potential, and to the
working mothers who have roles as wives and mothers who are pursuing their careers. Ibu Susy also
likes cooking her family’s favorite food and making ecoprint crafts that will be used for charity
programmes.
Her favorite book is “The Secret of True Happiness” by Joyce
Meyer. This book discovers secrets of happiness as a choice (not
a condition), how she can choose to be happy throughout life (it
is not focusing on how many challenges that she faced), deciding
not to allow small things to take the best of her.
Choosing to be happy makes her see challenges and problems as
opportunities or good intentions for her (teaching, motivating,
responding and winning). From this book, she also learns to not
compare herself with others, and instead to work towards
becoming a better person everyday. Choosing to be happy means
enjoying her life, using the best of her and at the end reaching
her best potential. There is an interesting quote from William
Allen White, "I am not afraid of tomorrow, because I have seen
yesterday, and love today"
At the beginning of the pandemic, she and her husband explained to their children that they have to
adapt with new ways of working and studying, because life must go on. Beside giving good examples to
their children, they kept managing their routines and asking the children to be open in following the
transitions, they were connected; they talked about challenges that happen in a day during lunch, dinner
and finding best solutions together. They keep facing and responding to this pandemic by doing regular
activities from home with maximum use of the various applications of communication- digital
technology. The good side is that from new adaptations to this pandemic, their children become more
skilled in using digital devices, doing tasks online and finding information for their studies such as
research and education journals in ease.
The closeness, togetherness and motivation of supporting each other become keys for her to have high
performance in the office, and also enabling their children to gain their high achievements at school.
Both of her sons are her priority, and the reason for her reaching the best in her career as a working
mother. The key is putting them as the priority with the same scale of priority of things in her office.
She discusses this with them, telling them that they are the priorities too. This makes them active in
giving motivation and asking support for them in their learning. The children see her commitment in
fulfilling the scale of priorities she gives with time, effort, and full heart for them. Many people say that
she has high ability in multitasking , however she tries her best to avoid multitasking so she can maintain
focus and assure her high performance in the office and high quality time with her children.

LEARNING TOGETHER WITH AN SBR PARENT
Ibu Susy with family During their quality time together, she gives her full
attention to the children (turning off her laptop and
handphone, as her office respects her quality time with
family). She uses this time to cook their favorite food,
trying new recipes and cooking together, playing cards,
watching movies together, looking out for new street food
to try, and sharing groceries to those in need. One
interesting activity during the pandemic is she became a
barber for her sons and husband.
Her favorite activity is spending time with them, telling jokes, listening to their stories or just sharing
about books that they read. It is very important for her to assure that there will be good memories they
make together. It is unconditional love.
Ibu Susy’s motto is "Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God (Leo
Buscaglia). Always do and give our best!"
