2018 American Indian Day
“Preservation of our Native Language and Culture”
Acting Cabinet Secretary, Suzette A. Shije The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD) kicked off this two-day event
with an evening reception that was held on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at La
Posada De Santa Fe Resort in Santa Fe, NM. This event gave State and Tribal
leaders the chance to come together and establish a good working relationship for
the upcoming years.
The celebration continued Friday, February 2, 2018 at the State Capitol in Santa Fe,
NM, where State and Tribal Leaders, exhibitors, Tribal members and many others
gathered to hear from Tribal Leaders speaking on this year’s theme, “Preservation
of our Native Language and Culture” and to watch Native performances. During
this time, we also heard from the NM Indian Education Department regarding the
New Mexico Indian Education Act 15-year anniversary, which coincided this year
with American Indian Day.
Events followed at the IAD/Santa Fe Indian School Community Luncheon which
was held at the Santa Fe Indian School. The afternoon events included a community
feast day luncheon, Native dances, and over 25 exhibitor booths.

The New Mexico Behavioral Health Collaborative hosted the NM
Opioid State Target Response (STR) Tribal Summit on February 22-
23, 2018 at the Santa Claran Hotel and Casino in Espanola, NM. This
two-day event was focused on community readiness to address opioid
treatment and addiction, available resources and building crisis teams
within tribal communities. We heard firsthand on lived experiences
and how it has impacted lives on personal, family and community
levels.

The purpose of the NM Opioid STR Initiative is to address the
tremendous opioid crisis by expanding access to treatment, reducing
unmet treatment needs, and reducing opioid overdose-related deaths
through the provision of prevention, treatment and recovery services
for Opioid Use Disorders (OUDs) in New Mexico.

Acting Cabinet Secretary, Suzette A. Shije, and Tribal
Infrastructure Fund Administrator, Lawrence John
attended the New Mexico Legislature & Navajo
Nation Chapters Planning Meeting that was held at
Upper Fruitland Chapter, Upper Fruitland, New
Mexico. The meeting was sponsored by District 4
Representative Sharon Clahchischilliage to discuss
Capital Outlay Appropriations, Overview of State
Projects and Funding Plan. The Indian Affairs
Department presented an overview and updates of
Tribal Infrastructure Funds and Capital Outlay
projects within District 4.
