Years 7 and 8: Spelling Bee Competition

On Tuesday, 12th July, Years 7 and 8 participated in a Spelling Bee
competition. Each class nominated two representatives to take part in the
contest and the contenders were tested upon a selection of words from their
spelling lists that they have had to learn throughout the year. The
competition was fierce and the tension was high but, ultimately, Year 8’s
‘Spelling Bee Champion’ of 2021-2022 was Ruby (8L) whilst Nancy took home
the championship title for Year 7. Congratulations to the winners and to all
of those girls who bravely represented their class.

singing ‘We Are Family’. A variety of snacks was also sold at the
event.

Over £700 was raised and this is being split between two charities:

very organised. They have been a credit to their year groups. The

Year 7: Colchester Zoo

Year 7 visited Colchester Zoo to learn about adaptations and
interdependence, in context. For some pupils, this was their first visit to a
zoo and to get up close and personal with lots of different species of
animals. A highlight was feeding the Rainbow Lorikeet - a species of parrot
found in the Australian rainforest.

On Friday, 17th June, the History
Department took over 90 Year 9
pupils to Ypres, in Belgium, to visit
the battlefields and cemeteries of

History curriculum begins in 1900
and includes a study of the causes
of the First World War and life in the

Our visit included a visit to
Passchendaele Museum, Sanctuary

cemetery and the Menin Gate. The
day was made extra special as one
of our Year 9 pupils was able to lay
a wreath for her Great-Great

Pupils were given the opportunity to attend various workshops that
targeted issues such as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
Inspirational guest speakers, like Lando Du Ploy, spoke with pupils

The day was thought provoking and pupils certainly came away from

Zanzibar 2022

On Friday 15th July, after a three year wait, Team Zanzibar headed for
Heathrow to start their journey to Zanzibar. What seemed like a fever
dream all came to life as they adventured to Prison Island on their first
excursion, where they viewed their first members of marine biodiversity
- some gigantic, rare centurion Tortoises. They even got to feed the
gentle giants. The breezy boat ride, cooling their brows, was a bit
choppy for some but it was an excellent introduction to their main mode
of transport for the trip.
On Sunday, they enjoyed a sunny day of snorkelling among coral reefs
and witnessed the effects of pollution on them. Sadly, one area was
completed bleached and had a decreased biodiversity. Due to
overfishing, it was also over populated with sea urchins.

We are very proud of Nancy-Jane, Year 8, and her sister Charlotte, soon

(200m swim, 6km bike ride and a 2 km run) on the 2nd July this year.
They raised a whopping £917 for “Treasured Memories”, a small charity
based at Queen’s Hospital.

The whole family have completed lots of events over many years,
including mum and dad running the marathon, and this is Nancy’s 4th
triathlon! The money they raised in the past has enabled Queen’s
Hospital to open “Dennis’s Den” - an amazing room which allows
families with poorly relatives to get together and have quality time.
They have had weddings, christenings and many birthdays in the

Year 10 came second in the Borough Rounders Rally. They beat Frances
Bardsley, Redden Court, Hall Mead and Sanders. Their only loss was to
Coopers but it was a close game: 7 to 8 ½. The girls worked well as a team
and helped each other throughout the tournament. For some of the
team, this was the first time they had ever represented the school. It was a
pleasure to watch them enjoying every match and trying their hardest.

Interhouse Tennis

Interhouse Tennis was run by Cara and her team during Wimbledon.
Years 7 to 12 participated and the results were very close: 1st place -
Whitby (13 - most wins); 2nd place - Rievaulx (13); 3rd place - Lindisfarne (13);
4th place - Thanet (10).

CAREERS CORNER

What a year it has been in Careers at Sacred Heart of Mary Girls'
School.

● 124 CP sessions have been delivered by our Form Tutors, covering

is stereotyping?’

● All students from Years 7 to 13 have now registered with ‘Start
Profile’ and begun logging their career journey.

● Speakers - ranging from law, universities, apprenticeship
programmes, careers advice and personal and social
development programmes - have attended SHOM to talk to our
students.

● 234 students have now had face-to-face support from our
external Careers Advisor, Mrs Jarvis.

● Students have completed virtual and in-person work experience
with British Airways, the Queens Theatre, BDO, PWC, Spectris,
Barclays, National Highways and many more.

I would like to thank Mrs Bradley for all of her support and effort in
organising many of these opportunities for the students and Mrs
Jarvis for continuing to deliver Careers Advice to our students.

SPORTS DAY 2022

After two years of adapted Sports Days, this year saw the return of
the Sports Day that we all look forward to and enjoy. We spent the
day at Hornchurch Stadium, where we saw some fantastic displays
of athletic ability, House pride and spirit and, of course, the House
banner competition. For Key Stage 3 pupils, this was the first
Sports Day they have ever attended!

-

Stand out performances from the day include:
- 10T A team relay winning the champions relay race
- Oma (in 8R) storming the last leg of the 8R A team relay
- 7, 10 and 12 T winning all of their Tug of War matches
- Key Stage 3 pupils, with Cara and Francesca in Year 12,
performing a cheerleading routine to close Sports Day.
- Oma (in 8R) breaking school records for the SHOMathlon in
long jump (4.45m) and 100m (13.09 seconds)
