Once we had dropped our bags, we

to continue talking about what happened
- no matter how horrific the events were.
We heard many saddening stories about
the victims and saw many of their

them when entering the camp.

Chamber Choir Charity Singing

At Roomes

Mrs McCoy and the Chamber Choir continued their annual tradition of
carol singing for charity outside Roomes on Friday, 16th December.
On a dry, albeit wintry, afternoon, the girls sung favourites - such as
Gaudete and Carol of the Bells - as well as traditional carols and
Christmas songs.
Passers by donated generously. The carol singing raised over £160 which
will be going towards funding a child to go to Lourdes with HCPT Group
199 - one of the charities being supported by the school Chaplaincy
Team this year.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2022

For the eighteenth consecutive year, the pupils and staff of Sacred
Heart of Mary have taken part in the Christmas Shoebox Appeal.
Operation Christmas Child, which is organised by the charity
‘Samaritan’s Purse’, aims to bring joy to thousands of children around
the world who would not normally receive gifts.
Over 600 boxes were filled and packed with much love for our brothers
and sisters around the world. What a fantastic example of faith in
action.

Advent Prayers

Pupils in Year 9 were asked to compose a prayer for this year’s Carol Service, which could
be published, as a bookmark, to be enclosed in the booklet. As the service had to,
unfortunately, be cancelled due to icy conditions, we thought it would be nice to share
these with you over the advent season.

Dear God,

We pray that, during this time of advent, you fill our hearts with hope and happiness. We
ask you, Lord, that you comfort those who are alone or who feel isolated during this

Christmas, regardless of their circumstances. As this Christmas may be a difficult one for
many families this year, we ask that you make sure that we remain grateful for

presents and surprises. We ask you, God, that this year is a wonderful one for many of us
with our families and friends, as well as a time for remembering those who are no longer
with us. May we keep them in our thoughts and prayers as we enter the advent season.

Amen

Dear Lord,

Please help us ensure a happy and healthy Christmas that we can enjoy with our families
this year.

Assist us for the preparations of your birth, where we remember your birth and sacrifice
that you made for us.

May your light shine upon us through each and every day at this time.
Let us utilise joy, hope and love, as the advent candles each week tell us.
Strengthen our faith as we continue our journey, especially during advent so we can

follow in your footsteps to help us become a better person.

Amen

Dear  Father,
During this preparation time of Advent, we give thanks for the selfless example of Mary

our Mother.
We pray that we are able to take inspiration from the example she gives.

We pray that we are able to accept the Holy Spirit into our lives
As we listen and learn of the changes John the Baptist gives us through December’s

Gospel readings.
We ask for your help, Lord, in preparing the way for our Saviour’s joyous arrival at

Christmas.
Let us carry out these Gospel readings, modestly and graciously,
And take thanks for the food and family with which we have been blessed.
Heavenly Father, send your Holy Spirit down to be beside us in this time of celebration

and thanksgiving.

Amen.

SCIENCE

‘GCSE Science Live!’ Visit

On Friday 2nd of December, the Year 10 triple science students were visited by
‘GCSE Science Live!’, who carried out an engaging and informative workshop.
Chidera, Year 10, explains, “We got the chance to listen to amazing scientists and
an examiner at GCSE Science Live. They were all very interesting and told us a lot
about what their area of work was and how to approach GCSE questions.”
Rachel, also Year 10, continued: “The scientists kept us engaged by answering
various questions like, ‘How did the zebra get its stripes’, ‘Is time travel possible?’
and, ‘Are we made of stardust?’. (We actually are made of stardust!) It opened my
eyes to new ways of venturing into the sciences and all the wonderful
opportunities they can bring.”

Wiring A Plug

Year 10 pupils had a great time learning how to wire a
plug correctly in Physics lessons.
There were some mixed results but all pupils learnt
the main components of a plug and the reasons that
the materials are used.

FESTIVE FUN

Year 8: Analysing Ads

Year 8 have been enjoying some ‘Business’ fun and watching the John
Lewis adverts during the second half of this term. The girls have been
reflecting on the messages of kindness, love, joy and care shown in these
marketing campaigns. Each form has voted on their favourite John Lewis
advert and the votes revealed that ‘Edgar the Dragon’ was the winner.

Following on from this, Year 8 were
asked to create a ‘John Lewis’ style
animation, depicting Christmas at
SHOM. There were a variety of
entries, with all participants
showing a great range of ICT skills -
using different platforms and
techniques.

The winner - Laura in 8L - featured
the ‘Pets of SHOM’, with staff
volunteering pictures of their pets.
Her submission told the story of
Perry the greyhound, who was
alone and feeling lonely at
Christmas. The story goes on to
show all of the pets at SHOM
coming together to make sure no
one feels alone. The winning entry
can be found on the school
Instagram.

CAREERS CORNER

Via the SHOM Careers Google Classroom page:
● Miriam, in Year 11, completed an Obstetrics and Gynaecology
course at ‘MedicMentor’, which consisted of 14 sessions on
pregnancy, from the check-ups/appointments to a simulation of
the birth and then post-birth.

● Ellie, in Year 13, carried out work experience with British Airways.
“We were given an insight into different departments within British
Airways and also were given the opportunity to interact with
different employees with whom we may work if we choose to be an
apprentice.”

● Hollie, in Year 13, attended KPMG’s ‘Discovery’ programme. This
was a two day programme aimed at school leavers where they
learnt, predominantly, about life at KPMG and specific areas of
business such as Audit and Tax. “We heard from students doing
degree apprenticeships and managers who had been working at
the company for years. At the end, we were shown how to apply
and the possible routes we could pursue at the company”.
