2023 Orientation Packet Online

WELCOME TO THE PIONEER FAMILY You are a Pioneer. Embrace that idea, right from the start. Own it. Live it. Let it guide you as you join the 60,000 Wayland alumni who have gone before you, many of them leaving a legacy of deep Christian faith coupled with memorable and meaningful academic success. As you learn about this university you will come to understand that “Pioneer” is not just a nickname, it is who we are and we have proven it over and over throughout our 115-year history. I challenge you today to begin thinking about what your Pioneering legacy will be at Wayland. Will you Pioneer cutting-edge digital music that reaches others around the world, protect us by developing new approaches to cybersecurity, or help create new frontiers in the digital humanities or through undergraduate research in the sciences? Will you help design new currency for foreign governments in the graphic arts lab, better understand humankind through the behavioral and social sciences, become certified to teach by mastering today’s newest and most rigorous education standards, or learn to more deeply minister to others through Christian studies? Most importantly, will Jesus Christ and His teachings be at the very heart of your Pioneering experience? Will your love for God and love for others shine brightly no matter the career you choose to follow? My strong belief is that this is the most important aspect of what you will experience at Wayland and I hope that your heart and mind will be open to receiving the love of Christ through the Wayland experience. If you will let it, this university will change your life. I know it did mine. Thanks for choosing Wayland. I can’t wait to see you on campus, to get to know you and to watch you thrive! I’m glad you are a Pioneer! Bobby L. Hall, Ed.D. President 2 WBU | Welcome

In the early 1900s, pioneer physician Dr. James Henry Wayland understood the importance of education and was determined to offer an education grounded in faith to the people of West Texas. In an agreement with the Staked Plains Baptist Association and the people of Plainview, Dr. and Mrs. Wayland donated $10,000 and 25 acres of prime real estate to establish the Wayland Literary and Technical Institute that was officially chartered in 1908. During Dr. James W. “Bill” Marshall’s tenure (1947-1953), Wayland began to expand its reach. An international student program was initiated and the college soon had a higher percentage of international students than any other American college or university. By 1948, Wayland had become a four-year college. Wayland continued to make bold strides forward in 1951 by becoming the first four-year liberal arts college in the former Confederate states to voluntarily admit black students on an equal basis with white students. This decision came three years before the Supreme Court’s decision that banned racial segregation in schools. In the 1980s, Wayland moved from college to university status and began offering graduate and lifelong learning programs. In the early 2000s the university opened its virtual campus so students around the world could attend Wayland. 4 WBU | History Of Wayland A Brief History Of Wayland

Chapel I see the identity of Wayland in chapel. I love chapel because despite the craziness a week may involve, I am always brought back to Jesus in the middle of it all. There’s a freedom in the worship and so many good reminders and lessons through the teachings. Chapel not only means a lot to me because I get to grow personally, but I get to grow with those around me. -Mason Garrett Baptist Student Ministries The BSM is a family. I can be myself around the people who are there. It has also helped it grow in my faith and it has been a way that God has put people into my life. -Rosa Rameriz Spiritual Life Fellowship of Christian Athletes FCA has given me the opportunity to come together with other athletes on campus to fellowship and learn more about the Lord. It has challenged me in my faith and allowed a great place to grow with the Lord. -Alex Clements WBU | Spiritual Life 7

WBU | Koinoia 11 The weekend is filled with games and events designed to get new students comfortable on campus and plugged into life at Wayland. We want Wayland to be home for you. A place where you are accepted and you feel part of a family. Koinonia is only the beginning! We are Wayland! Koinonia (coin-o-knee-uh) is a freshman welcome event held the weekend before classes start. Students are placed in families, and given “K-Parents” that introduce them to Wayland and college life.

FERPA (The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) As a Student and Parent of Wayland Baptist University Policy 8.1.1 WHAT IS FERPA? The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, is a federal law which provides that colleges and universities will maintain the confidentiality of student education records. The law basically says that no one outside the institute shall have access to students’ records nor will the institute disclose any information from those records without the written consent of the student. There are exceptions, of course, so that certain personnel from the institute may see the records, including persons in an emergency in order to protect the health and safety of students or other persons. 18 WBU | FERPA
