HISTORY OF
TALITHA KUM THAILAND

Looking back 25 years ago, a religious woman in Thailand found that many young girls had disap-
peared from a hill village and so decided to investigate the cause. Not long after, the Sister was contacted by
government officials to help a group of girls rescued from human trafficking. Discovering trafficking, they
were able to rescue one group of girls and return them to their families by paying money to the traffickers,
but this action was not sustainable.
Thus, the St. Paul de Chartres Thailand Province built a house to protect the girls from the trafficking
circle. They attended nearby public schools until the sisters built a boarding school, for seventh to ninth-grad-
ers. The sisters were convinced that education could prevent girls’ families from selling them to traffickers and
offer alternatives for employment; a strategy that has saved many.
Later on, human trafficking was becoming better understood globally.
In 2005, UISG by Sr. Bernadette Sagma, FMA and teams including IOM. organized the first training
program workshop on Counter Human Trafficking at Pastoral Center of Diocesan Bangkok, there were about
12 Women Congregations and one of Man Congregation attended. At that time Sr. Françoise Jiranonda, SPC
was the chairperson of The Conference of Women Superior of Thailand and Laos (CMRSWTL).
In 2006, UISG by the same teamwork organized the second seminar in order to follow up the result
of the first seminar at Pastoral Center “Ban Phuwan” Samphan Nakronphathom. CMRSWTL was the local
co-organizer and participants were the same group as in 2005.
In 2008, three delegates comprising with (1) Sr. Françoise, SPC, (2) Sr. Kanlaya, SHB, and (3) Sr.
Anurak,RGS. participated in the UISG workshop in Rome.

In 2009, June two delegates comprising of Sr.Sutisa Utalun, RGS. and Sr.Puangpaga Rachathon,-
SISM. participated in UISG meeting in Rome.
In 2011, September 17-19, Sr. Folyn Catungal’s APWRATH, OSA, together with Sr. Kanlaya orga-
nized a seminar on the topic of “Religious Women and Men of Thailand joining together Against Human
Trafficking” at Redemptorist Center, Pattaya, Thailand. At the end of this seminar, all participants agreed
to establish a commission to undertake the mission of Countering Human Trafficking. The Commission
consisted of Religious Men and Women including Lay volunteers.
Sr Françoise Jiranonda, a Sister of St Paul de Chartre, the first chairperson of Talitha Kum Thailand,
organized Thailand’s women’s religious congregations into a successful collaboration in combating human
trafficking, as Thailand is a supply, demand and international pathway of both drugs and people traffick-
ing.

Laos in December 2011.

In 2012, The Conference of Women Major Superior of Thailand and Laos was forming Talitha Kum
Thailand.
February 2012. The first meeting of “Talitha Kum, Thailand,” the new organization which was approved
by the Conference of Major Religious Superiors of Women of Thailand and Laos, (CMRSWTL) was held on.
This group/organization was set up specifically to work concretely on the issue of human trafficking. There
are 13 members from many congregations of religious women plus several members of the laity.
In 2013, December Talitha Kum Asia Conference was organized by UISG Rome in Thailand. Talitha Kum
Thailand accepted the policy statement formulated by the conference: “We, Talitha Kum Southeast Asia,
AMRAT and ACRATH, a network of consecrated persons against human trafficking, commit ourselves to
become messengers of hope and protagonists of change, and dedicate ourselves to stop the de-humanizing
slavery of our sisters, brothers and children; Inspired and encouraged by His Holiness, we continue on the
path of service to the poorest and most marginalized of our brothers and sisters, in solidarity and assistance,
with Christian compassion, acceptance, understanding and kindness”
2015-2017 “The Association of Major Superiors Men and Women of Thailand” has accepted Talitha
Kum Thailand as one mission belong to a branch of their Union. Now 26 Congregations has joined the
networks.
Talitha Kum Thailand was responsible for Talitha Kum South East/East Asia. Sr. Françoise Jiranonda was
Chairperson, after organizing a seminar for members 11 countries, TKSEA was transferred to the Talitha Kum
Indonesia.
Sr Marie Agnès Buasap and Sr Atcharaphan Ounlar received a scholarship from UISG to strengthen
skills in this special ministry. In February, they completed the two-year program (2017-2019), having parti-
cipated in both residential stage in Rome and online programs.
In June 2018, the Thai government granted an award to Talitha Kum Thailand as the best organiza-
tion in the country to combat this trafficking curse. Thailand’s government has many policies in place to stop
all kinds of trafficking, but is not consistent in implementing them.

For more than 25 years, the Association of Major Religious Superiors in Thailand have been working
to end human trafficking in Thailand by providing pastoral care, helping victims of human trafficking and,
along with the training, raising awareness of the threat of human trafficking for youths and the general
public to prevent victims of human trafficking. Moreover, the religious groups in Thailand have collaborated
to instill value and dignity into students and the general public to cultivate morals and ethics, so that they
have respect and love for one another and do not see fellow humans as tools for exploitation.

Mission

Thailand is addressed as the supply and demand side, includ-
ing the pathway of drug and human trafficking. We need to raise
awareness of human trafficking and providing the information to
Thais, especially the hill tribe people. So, they can get more knowledge
on human trafficking prevent them from human trafficking and also
support the people who get hurt from human trafficking.

Thailand

The province where Talitha Kum
Thailand have worked.

Note : Training and Enhancing Knowledge
in descending order of frequency.

A campaign against human trafficking at the church and diocese levels.

A big part of that effort for Talitha Kum Thailand
is educating and raising awareness, particularly
among those who are most vulnerable: young
teens.

Students went to breakout sessions and
rotated among the presentations. At one, there
was a more detailed discussion of trafficking in
sex tourism and the fishing industry as well as
forced labor.
Students learned of the common ruses and
false promises of good jobs used to lure victims in
Thailand and other countries.

Prevention

DeGeorge)

In a session, students worked on posters against trafficking. In another, they
made bracelets to remind themselves of victims and the dangers of trafficking.
Others discussed Only 13: The True Story of Lon, a book detailing the life of a Thai
girl in the sex tourism trade.
“We teach them respect for themselves and respect for others,”
“If they respect themselves, they will not sell themselves, and they will also
respect others.” said Sr. Kanlaya

Posters and workshops are part of building awareness among students about the realities and dangers of
human trafficking and what is being done to counter it. (GSR photo / Gail DeGeorge)

In the Workshop, Sisters from at least
three congregations as well as teachers
helped conduct sessions and facilitate
discussion among students.

“We are created in the image of God.
Everybody has dignity, and when you de-
stroy other people, you destroy the image
of God”
“We have to have dignity to not destroy
anybody and not enslave anyone because
human trafficking is enslaving others.”

Children draw the reflection about human trafficking.

We must raise awareness of this new evil which, in the world
at large, wants to be hidden since it is scandalous and ‘politically
incorrect’. No one likes to acknowledge that in one’s own city,
even in one’s own neighbourhood, in one’s region or nation there
are new forms of slavery, while we know that this plagues almost
all countries.

Pope Francis, Address to Participants in the Plenary Session of the Pontifical
Academy of Social Sciences, 18 April 2015

Talitha Kum Thailand run an activity to raise awareness on the threat of human trafficking
and build up the rapport for our future network with the parishioners at St. John Church on the
occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

Assumption Convent Lopburi run an activity to raise awareness on the threat of human traf-
ficking and build up the partnership for our future network at community around the school on the
occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

The 3rd Cambodia National Interfaith Forum on “Combating Human Trafficking and Ending
Modern Slavery” held on 14 August 2019 at Koh Pich Center-Phnom Penh-Cambodia.
The forum co-organized by National Committee for Counter Trafficking (NCCT), Ministry of
Cult and Religions and Caritas Cambodia with great cooperation and participation by key religious
leaders such as Buddhism, Catholic Church, Christians Church, and Muslim together with Non-
Government Organization, Civil Society and likeminded who are working on combating human
trafficking in Cambodia.

At Maryvit School Prachinburi, Thailand
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
It can be an integral part of the catalyst for change in the fight against human trafficking.
More than 350 students participated in awareness activities!

Hill Tribe Child and Youth

We went to the remote western borders of Thailand to work with
youth in seven hill-tribe centers, held sessions with youth, teachers
and parents to teach them about human trafficking and to create
collaboration to help protect the youth from being trafficked.
The priests and village leaders also cooperate with us.

Sr Marie Agnès Buasap
hands out eggs to students
who participate in a trafficking
education activity.

We gave each student a raw egg and pieces of white twine.
They were to create a nest for the egg using the twine. The egg
represented themselves, their preciousness, value and dignity, and
the need to take care of their life. The pieces of twine surrounding
the egg were tools to protect it. Each piece reminded them of im-
portant people in their lives who can protect them.

We also talked about how parents and
teachers can help them: They should always
go to them for help when they feel scared about
what might be happening to them.
The students named the pieces of twine
God, religion, parents, religious teachers and
education; these help to keep them safe. Atthe
end of the day, we cooked and ate the eggs!

session

The other activity that worked
well was to give each student a bal-
loon. They blew them up and played
with them throughout the day without
letting them fall to the ground. The balloon
represented their life and their need to pro-
tect themselves.

Blue heart Campaign

After these activities, they wrote
about what they had learned.
They responded well beyond our
expectations for the few hours we were
together. They had paid attention the
whole time and decided to live a simple
life, be moral, not greedy about money,
be honest, share with others and stay out
of trafficking. They wrote a short prayer
for God’s protection for their lives.

Talitha Kum Thailand network organized activity at Chiang Mai Diocese Youth Camp

Parents watch videos and facilitated discussions about protecting their kids and
protecting themselves from traffickers.
They did the same activities to understand how vulnerable their children are to
the lure of traffickers and how much they need to pay attention to what is happening
to their kids.

Prayer to St. Josephine Bakhita
for the healing of victims
of modern-day slavery

St. Josephine Bakhita, you were sold into
slavery as a child and endured untold hardship and
suffering.
Once liberated from your physical enslavement,
you found true redemption in your encounter with
Christ and his Church.
O St. Bakhita, assist all those who are trapped in a state of
slavery;Intercede with God on their behalf so that they will be
released from their chains of captivity.
Those whom man enslaves, let God set free. Provide comfort to sur-
vivors of slaveryand let them look to you as an example of hope and
faith.
Help all survivors find healing from their wounds. We ask for your
prayers and intercessions for those enslaved among us. Amen.

Prayer for Anti-Human Trafficking

Loving God, Our hearts are so full of pain and sorrow for the fate of our
brothers, sisters and children who are trafficked for exploitation in the labor
sector and for sexual discrimination because of greed and profit in our world.
We protest all kinds of human trafficking which deprive the dignity of
being daughters and sons of God. We need your help as we continue to
employ your assistance to terminate this action as soon as possible. May
your Compassionate Love give strength to our sisters whose hearts were
broken and renew them to set up a new life in our society. Please strength-
en their hearts with hope, love and inspiration to continue in their life journey.
Grant a change of hearts to greedy people who have no empathy for
others to become a people who realize we are all brothers and sisters. May you
inspire them to totally stop damaging our societal world by manipulating ways
which are a big danger to humanity. This is a serious international crime.
May our beloved Mother, Mary, intercede for us and grant us all the
wisdom and fortitude to remain daring in our unity with all women, men and
children. Show us the way that leads us to freedom.
This is the gift you share with everyone.
We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen
