From Nobby to Westbrook and everywhere in between, locals ventured out west last Saturday for the first ever Pittsworth Pro Rodeo. The rodeo was a raging success, with more than 3,500 people through the gates and top class action as well as local juniors delighting an all-ages crowd. Families rugged up and took their spots early while others arrived later and enjoyed the entertainment into the night. Pittsworth Show Society vice president Amanda Rhiel was delighted with how the day went. “I’ve got no words actually,” she said, then adding that “the atmosphere of the spectators” was a high point. “It was a really great family-oriented day, very well run and the competitors made you feel like you were a part of their family,” she said. “The campers too... they were thankful to be allowed to camp here and they cleaned up after themselves.“ Amanda made special mention of Brian and Tara Lovett from Taroom who had loaned their know-how to help make the event the success it was. “Brian’s had a lot to do with rodeos and had never been to Pittsworth before but he said the presentation of the grounds and the arena was one of the best he’d seen.” “I’d love to have another one if that’s the committee consensus,” Amanda said. The works are unapologetically vibrant and joyous, unbottling a fearless feminine energy. Michelle’s love of art was a constant through her childhood growing up in Allora - her father was a keen hobby photographer - and continued after she married ‘a Winton boy’ and lived in very remote Queensland for some time. “When I first got married there was probably five artists of varying ages all within about a three hour drive, which is super close in that country, and we would have art days together on the different stations,” she said. Michelle and Quentin eventually moved back to the Darling Downs where they had both attended Downlands College, and embarked on new careers and, more importantly, an IVF program that would ultimately gift them with their beloved daughter Montana, now 26. Back in Allora, Michelle says although art was something she enjoyed she “didn’t think too much about it because I was a bush kid and we were too busy feeding cattle or riding a bike... “But in primary school there was a competition, I was in Grade 6, and I won it and the prize was a book based on The Couleur Parfumerie is indeed the perfect title for Michelle Kennedy’s first solo exhibition which opened last week at Toowoomba’s Feather and Lawry Gallery. Louvre. “I opened up this book and thought wow, there’s a whole world beyond Allora... and so I’ve painted ever since.” Michelle was diagnosed with Lupus in 2009 and was advised to give up her career in mental health. She loved working with rehab patients but in the less demanding pace she was able to pick up her brushes again with time on her side. Friends would call in and ask if her paintings were for sale and one day Montana suggested to she start selling the work online. And it really is a case of the rest is history. The exhibition at Feather and Lawry is particularly special, as her first public exhibition. The work, all completed in the past two years, was largely inspired by the colours of her travels in Queensland and the Northern Territory from lagoons and flowers and lush tropical backdrops to the more muted tones of the outback. “Every time I paint, because I have this beautiful daughter that was so hard fought to get, and because I see there’s still a ways to go for women, I keep thinking you can put in all the curves and shapes, and the strength of the water which is nurturing... so much of the characteristics of being female comes out in the work I do. “

Mayor Paul Antonio retires After 11 years as Mayor and 15 years serving in the Toowoomba Regional Council, Mayor Paul Antonio last week announced he would be retiring on Friday, 21 July. Mayor Antonio (right) succeeded Peter Taylor as Mayor in 2012 and was the inaugural Deputy Mayor of the Toowoomba Region from 2008 to 2012. He had previously served on the Millmerran Shire Council, including eight years as Mayor, for 25 years. “At the previous local government election in 2020 I stated that this would be my final term in office,” Mayor Antonio said. “After consulting with Council appoints the Deputy Mayor as the new Mayor, it will also need to set a date for a subsequent Council meeting to appoint a new Deputy Mayor from the current Councillors. The CEO must also follow LGA requirements to fill the vacant Councillor position for the remainder of the term. Within 14 days of the new Mayor being appointed, the CEO must invite nominations for a Councillor to fill the vacant Councillor position. “Nominations for the vacant Councillor position must be invited from any person who is qualified to be a Councillor, and from each person who was a candidate for election at the last local government election,” Mr Pidgeon said. my family, I have decided to formally announce my decision to leave office, effective from July 21, 2023. “It has been an honour to serve my community, firstly at Millmerran, then on the wider Toowoomba Regional Council since March 2008. “Little could I have imagined progressing from my first term on the former Millmerran Shire in the early 1980s to a career in local government that has spanned almost 42 years.” Mayor Antonio said while there have been many changes over time, his work has centred around his willingness to meet and deal with people across all sectors of the community. “Local government plays a vital role in building and improving communities and providing essential services for our residents. While it comes with challenges, it is rewarding to see benefits delivered to our communities,” he said. “The role of Mayor has allowed me to broaden this approach and advocate for our fair share of funding or assistance from the higher levels of government.” WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? As the next election is less than twelve months away, there is no requirement to hold an election for Mayor. Instead, a meeting will be held on 21 July, where a new Deputy Mayor will be chosen from the current Councillors. This meeting will be chaired by the Deputy Mayor, Geoff McDonald, who will automatically become the Acting Mayor at 12.01pm on 21 July. Toowoomba Regional Council CEO Brian Pidgeon said if

Private sector investment and various state government initiatives, including the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan and Queensland SuperGrid Infrastructure Blueprint, identify strong growth ahead for Queensland due to the state’s clean energy transition goals. The Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan has set targets to reach 70 per cent renewable energy by 2032 and 80 per cent by 2035, which will require approximately 580,200 hectares. QFF CEO Jo Sheppard said that as the state prepares for growth in the renewable energy sector, an increasing number of landholders is being approached to host projects on their land, and it is essential that they are fully informed of the potential benefits as well as potential risks. “The Toolkit is an important resource for landholders as Is a renewable energy project right for me? They are walk-in (no appointment or referral needed), bulk billed, have extended hours and are staffed by doctors and nurses. The Federal Labor Government had promised the Toowoomba UCC, as well as 50 others around the country, would be up and running by the deadline. Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton said the latest broken promise continued a very clear pattern of breaking election promises by the Albanese Labor Government. “Toowoomba is the health-hub of Southwest Queensland and local doctors, nurses and health administrators do an amazing job to provide the best possible care,” Mr Hamilton said. “I hear from local GPs that the cost pressures on them are ever-increasing, and I hear from local residents that it is harder and harder to get an appointment with a local GP, let alone a bulk billed appointment under this government. “Our healthcare system is under serious pressure, and now Labor have broken their promise on delivering an Urgent Care Clinic to relieve our local hospital. “This is another example of why Labor cannot be trusted. Labor only prioritises health during election campaigns, and they fail when it comes to actually delivering the services people rely on.” So far, only eleven UCCs have opened, nine in Victoria and two in Western Australia. Shadow Minister for Health, Senator Anne Ruston said there are still no details about where the missing clinics will be exactly located or when patients can be expected to walk through the doors. “Labor also promised that every Urgent Care Clinic would be open during the extended times of 8am to 10pm as a key part of their operation, but it was revealed in Budget Estimates Urgent Care Clinic deadline missed An Urgent Care Clinic in Toowoomba, promised to be up and running by 1 July 2023, is yet to be finished. that this won’t even be the case,” Senator Ruston said. “It is becoming more and more evident that Labor sold the public a lie.” The Department of Health and Aged Care claims 58 Medicare UCCs will be open across Australia by the end of the year. UCCs aim to reduce the burden on emergency departments of hospitals by catering for patients that do not need lifethreatening care. Phones banned in schools The Queensland Government has announced mobile phones and smartwatch-type wearable electronic devices will be banned at all Queensland state schools during school hours, including break times, from Term 1, 2024. Principals and school leaders across Queensland have already implemented bans and been supported to do so. Over 95 per cent of schools have a clear policy banning the use of phones during class times, with the remaining schools restricting usage informally. Of the 95 per cent of schools with classroom bans, around 15 per cent do not extend to break times.

Intensive case management will complement other services including a new co-responder team whose work includes bail compliance checks; connecting young people to health and education services; parenting and family support; drug and alcohol rehabilitation; and detention where there is an unacceptable risk to community safety. The team will have eight staff – including six intensive case managers – who will each provide interventions for up to five high risk repeat young offenders at a time. Three of the eight positions have been filled, and the service will be provided across the Darling Downs, south-west to Goondiwindi and west to Chinchilla. Staff will work closely with young people aged 10 to 17, as well as their families, so they become more accountable and change anti-social behaviours and attitudes, while also ensuring they receive tailored assistance to address their needs. This typically includes getting teens back into education, helping families improve parenting skills and home environments, and connecting them to support services to tackle issues such drug and substance misuse. The average amount of time for intensive case management is nine months. Owner Malcolm Davison said he was “very happy” to have won the award, which was announced at the Choices Flooring annual conference in Thailand. Mr Davison said the award is given to the store with the most outstanding general excellence in sales and service over the past twelve months. “It was a huge surprise,” he said. Choices Flooring wins big award Choices Flooring Toowoomba has bested 140 other stores in Australia and New Zealand by winning the coveted Jack Swinton Award for Australasia. “With over 140 stores, there’s pretty keen competition. “We’re very happy to have won it.” Mr Davison said when deciding the winner, the judges assess the sales and products of each store and send out staff to see how each store is operating and following guidelines. Earlier in the year, Choices Flooring Toowoomba also received the Queensland Jack Swinton Award at a regional meeting in Brisbane. The Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning spokesperson told On Our Selection News the Queensland Government is unaware of any wind farm proposals in that area. “As with all wind farm proposals, the Government welcomes the opportunity to have pre-lodgement discussions with any future proponent,” the spokesperson said. Government ‘unaware’ A spokesperson for the Queensland Government has said the Government is unaware of plans by Marble Energy to construct a wind farm at East Greenmount and Ramsay.

Page 14 ON OUR SELECTION NEWS Thursday, July 13, 2023 UNDER 8’S DAY Recently the students who are under 8 years of age celebrated Under 8s Day, a special day all about being younger than 8. Under 8s Day is an initiative of Early Childhood Australia to highlight the importance of the first 8 years of a child’s life. Children learn best in a hands-on and engaging environment and all the activities in which they participated on their special day certainly demonstrated that. A great session was organised for the children and they had the most amazing time. Cambooya State School Queenslanders with a seniors, veterans or concession card are being urged to contact their electricity provider to ensure any eligible rebates are applied to their account. The 2023 State Budget included an additional $700 electricity rebate for vulnerable households, on top of the existing $372 concession. This brings the total rebate to $1,072 for those eligible. All Queensland households will receive a $550 rebate automatically applied to their electricity bill in quarterly instalments this financial year. Anyone who thinks they may be eligible for the Queensland Electricity Rebate should contact their energy provider. Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen, Mick de Brenni said the Government does not want anyone who is eligible to miss out. “If your Mum, Dad, grandparent, neighbour or friend Thousands potentially missing out on rebate There are potentially 8,500 households in the Toowoomba area missing out on a $1,072 electricity bonus. could be eligible, check in to see if they are aware of what they could be claiming,” Minister de Brenni said. “It’s as simple as calling your energy provider and registering your seniors, veterans or concessions card to your account. “I encourage every household to check if they’re eligible and, if they are, to apply for the Queensland Electricity Rebate to ensure they receive up to $1072 in rebates. “It’s our progressive coal royalties that mean we can deliver this generous rebate to help Queenslanders feeling the financial pinch, and it’s those same coal royalties that are putting money back in the pockets of Queenslanders.” Minister for Seniors and Disability Services, Craig Crawford said it is important every eligible Queenslander knows what they need to do to access this rebate and has urged everyone to contact their parents, grandparents and any elderly members in their family and community.
