The response has been nothing short of amazing. Groups like the Toowoomba Women’s Shed, Toowoomba Quilters Group and the Pittsworth Quilters Club have got involved as well as numerous individuals form the young to the elderly. Our youngest seamstress is in Grade 4 at the Cooyar State School. The school sewing students proudly presented their finished bags to the Hospital Foundation with their teacher last week. The eldest contributor is in her 90s and house-bound but still wants to make a difference in her community. All our wonderful sewers have volunteered their time and resources and to date we have delivered close to 600 handmade dignity bags to that hospital. A colossal effort on everyone’s part that has been involved and on behalf of every patient that will receive a toiletry filled dignity bag when they need to come to hospital – Thank you! Also a huge thank you to the Hospital Foundation which facilitates the filling and distribution of these bags. Your timeless efforts have not gone unnoticed. To all concerned keep up the good work. To win, the P&C had to provide a written submission showcasing the benefits (beyond the dollars and cents) raised from their fundraising efforts. “We focused on the incredible 140th Birthday Celebrations that the school held in October last year,” Ms Caldwell said. “While it’s always great to raise money, our intention was to hold an event that brought the community together, engaged families, and supported local businesses, all while having heaps of fun! “And we definitely achieved this.” After being shortlisted as a finalist, the P&C had to produce a two-minute video about the school. “We engaged two very talented local mums from our school, Ashlee and Bec, and 23 of our students to make a fantastic video which showed everyone just how great our school and P&C is,” P&C Treasurer Renae Mann said. “The video was shown at the 2023 P&Cs Queensland State Conference, along with the other finalists. Everyone loved it!” Cambooya State School P&C Executive Lisa Sternberg said, “This award belongs to every single person who has volunteered at our school, giving their time to support our students and our school.” And what’s happening with the winnings? Half will be put aside to contribute to new playground equipment, and half will be spent on end of year celebrations at the school on Friday 1 December. The P&C Awards celebrate and recognise the wonderful work of P&C members who devote their time to improving the education opportunities and welfare of students while supporting their school. The P&C Awards are run by P&Cs Queensland. The awards are open to all Queensland state schools, including regional, remote, and metro primary schools, high schools, special schools and environmental education centres - and Cambooya State School beat them all. What a wonderful effort from a school of 161 students! Future fundraising activities at the school will continue to be supported by the vibrant and energetic P&C, school leadership team, and wider community. Despite its small size, Cambooya State School has wonderful volunteers who are always keen to help and do their utmost to support their students and school. R U OK? has dedicated resources to help you have a meaningful conversation with someone who’s doing it tough in rural and remote areas. The Mateship Manual is a simple guide with practical tips and is available free at ruok.org.au R U OK? Community Ambassador Paul Turner, who is 70, understands first-hand how important it is to have an authentic conversation with someone close to you, who makes time to take notice and really listen. “Since I was a teenager, I have had thoughts of suicide,” Mr Turner said. He works as a counsellor in the greater Darwin area. “In the last four years, I had a turnaround experience where someone asked me, in essence, ‘are you OK?’ and it gave me permission to reflect on what had been going on in my life. “Now I don’t hear those thoughts in my mind. “I don’t experience those thoughts anymore and I am forever grateful that I was able to move through that.” Mr Turner’s experience reinforces how showing genuine interest and concern when you ask someone, ‘are you OK?’ can encourage a meaningful conversation. “You need to ask this question because you mean it,” Katherine Newton, R U OK? CEO said. “If you really care and want to hear an honest answer, be genuine with your ask, make space to listen and let the person know you’re sticking around for whatever comes next. “We know the positive impact an R U OK? conversation have when people know and trust each other. “This usually means that trust has been built over time, they’re familiar with each other’s routines and behaviours, and they likely know what’s going on in each other’s lives. “This trust, along with consideration of the where and when a conversation will take place contributes to making an R U OK? conversation truly meaningful.” Let the people in your world know you’re here, to really hear, because a conversation could change a life. You can find free resources at ruok.org.au to help you know when and how to ask, ‘are you OK?’ in your workplace, school and community, every day of the year. Part of the report Mike Smith, Government Relations Manager for eastAUSmilk, had from the meeting: EastAUSmilk’s Annual General Meeting was held in Pittsworth, Queensland on Wednesday 30 August, following last year’s in Lismore, New South Wales. Members from both New South Wales and Queensland attended, as well as staff. In his report, President Matt Trace highlighted the impact of floods on members, as well as milk pricing issues, and the need to build eastAUSmilk’s profile amongst non-members. Chief Executive Officer Eric Danzi attended via Zoom. His report stressed the strategic plan developed by the Board, and member services. Members at the AGM were then welcomed to Peter Garratt’s nearby Southbrook dairy farm, where Peter spoke in detail about his feed and nutrition practices, which enable significantly higher carrying capacity, and hence profitability, than pasture feeding alone. In conjunction with the Annual General Meeting, eastAUSmilk’s Board also met in person, and considered issues as wide-ranging as the Northern Dairy Plan, artificial insemination, dairy beef exports, and Bermuda grass. They also received an update on government relations matters, particularly including Government funding of dairy programs, and the proposed purchase of two Saputo milk processing facilities by Coles. The Board also considered briefly greater use of technology, to allow on-line attendance at future Annual General Meetings by members who couldn’t be there in person. Both the Board and the Annual General Meeting spent time discussing the very positive membership growth in New South Wales following the amalgamation of Dairy Connect and QDO, and regional visits by the CEO. The visit to Peter Garratt’s farm at Southbrook.

Two men in their 70s allegedly responded to a personal advertisement and were subsequently engaged in what they thought was a paid dating service. The Toowoomba region man who was scammed reported the matter to ReportCyber and it was referred to Queensland Police Service in February 2023. He reported the matter after he consulted a friend who advised him of concerns it may be a scam. The second man, based in the Cassowary Coast region, lost a total of $343,500. A third alleged victim, a man in his 50s from Western Queensland, was defrauded of more than $111,000. The total the three men were allegedly defrauded of totals $496,578. After investigation by police a 52-years-old Benowa woman, a 29-years-old Benowa woman and a 52-years-old Mermaid Beach woman have each been charged with several counts of fraud. Detective Sergeant Matthew Hogan of the Far North High Risk Investigations Team advised victims to come forward, seek support and report what has happened. If you believe you are a victim of a scam, immediately notify your financial institution and then report the matter to ReportCyber. Beware of dating scams A Toowoomba region man has lost approximately $42,000 after falling for an alleged romance scam.

Our students, staff and parents have been busy making their Book Week costumes. This year we were delighted to be invited to join with other schools in the Clifton Cluster to celebrate Book Week. Thank you to the St. Francis de Sales school community for a fabulous morning. We all enjoyed the street parade and loved the rotation activities. Colouring competitions and book prizes were awarded at our own special parade, and the week culminated with the conclusion of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Thank you to each of our families for really embracing Book Week. This year we had 100 per cent of our school dress in theme to celebrate the love of books. Thank you to our super parents who value reading enough to spend their precious time creating or assisting in the creation of costumes and sharing the love of their favourite books. Our school also took the opportunity to visit the Museum while we were visiting Clifton. LEFT: Greenmount students take a look at an old pump at the Clifton Museum. Great Gift Ideas for Her GREENMOUNT STATE SCHOOL Continued from page 14 The displays and collections of things from yesteryear were well received by our students who had lots of interesting questions. We can’t wait to use this learning when we focus more on History in Term Four. Our 3 to 6 students completed their Bike Education program with the PCYC. There was much learning and it was wonderful to see our older students support those who were less experienced to gain valuable skills in road safety. The program offers hands-on learning of the road rules and responsibilities and is another way of keeping our kids safe. As we write, our Options Program is underway and assessment is in full swing. We can’t wait to share more news from ‘The Mount’ with you next time. RIGHT: A few of the great book week costumes.

Students came dressed as their favourite book character and staff also got into the dress-up spirit, coming as a Dr Seuss character. The kindy students from the Wyreema Early Education centre also attended this fantastic community event. Our special guest judges had the difficult task of selecting the best costume from each classroom. Winners were given a book to be used to “Read, Grow and Inspire”, the theme for Book Week 2023. Above & Right: Wyreema Book Week characters. Share your stories Primary school children are invited to share their stories of fair go, mateship, respect and inclusion as part of the nation-wide Aussie of the Month Schools’ program, younger sibling to the Australian of the Year Awards. ‘Sticking Together’ is a primary school competition encouraging students to share how they stick together in their classrooms, schools and community through words or photographs that reflect our Australian values of ‘Fair go’, ‘Mateship’, ‘Respect’ and ‘Inclusion’. By getting involved, twenty lucky schools can win their share of $20,000 worth of Pilot Pen classroom stationery prize packs including gel pens, whiteboard markers, ballpoints, refills, erasable highlighters and Sellotape safety dispensers. To register for the program and enter the promotion visit aussieofthemonth.org.au Entries close next Friday, 22 September 2023.
