Mayor McDonald Councillor Geoff McDonald has been chosen by his peers as the new Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor, following the retirement of Paul Antonio. Councillor Geoff McDonald spoke after being elected as the third Mayor of Toowoomba Regional Council. The Mayor was elected almost unanimously by councillors, with only Cr Carol Taylor standing against. Cr Taylor said that in her view, the culture of Council was “not great” and that she believed that gender diversity was not valued. After being selected as Mayor, Cr McDonald said he was incredibly honoured and understands how much of a responsibility it is to be in this position. “I’m also aware of how big the shoes are that I have to fill and will do my best to repay the faith which has been shown in me by my colleagues and the community,” he said. Minister Fentiman said this state-of-the-art facility is supporting paramedics to deliver the best care possible to their patients, ensuring the community’s expectations are being met during medical emergencies. “One of the most common callouts for our Darling Downs paramedics is for Acute Mental Health patients, so I’m proud to be part of a government that is investing in this specialist program which pairs mental health clinicians with our paramedics,” Minister Fentiman said. “I’m committed to improving access to health care across our regions and this station is supporting coverage in the Darling Downs and South West Region and contributing to improved response times.” Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Darling Downs and South West Region Assistant Commissioner Michelle Baxter said the facility provides an incredible space to work and QAS has already seen the advantages of the multimillion-dollar station since it became operational. “This facility was also designed for the QAS to relocate the headquarters of our Darling Downs and South West Region office from the previous location in the Toowoomba CBD,” Ms Baxter said. “The premises will help our entire Darling Downs and South West team navigate what may lie ahead for the region. “Our staff proudly put on their uniform day in, day out for the community and it’s great to see them operating out of these premises.” Health Minister Shannon Fentiman (fifth from left) joins QAS executives and Drayton paramedics for the official opening of the station.

Although the actual construction of the bypass is perhaps decades away, TMR is undertaking planning now to determine if corridor protection should proceed. Bill Lansbury, Regional Director Southern Queensland of TMR, thanked community members for their feedback so far. “The feedback we are receiving is diverse and we appreciate the efforts of many community members,” Mr Lansbury said. “TMRs project team is available to discuss the project by phone, email or face-to-face meetings. “The online survey will remain open and the project team will remain available by phone, email and post until September. “Consultation is a highly valued process and all consultation feedback will be considered before a decision is made on the final transport corridor.” The extension will give the community a chance to have a say on plans by Transport and Main Roads to protect a northsouth transport corridor west of Toowoomba. The proposed corridor aims to provide capacity for projected transport demand and increase the efficiency and safety of the greater Toowoomba transport network. TMR have said it aims to include some “pop in face-to-face” consultation opportunities in the community in the coming weeks. Online consultation has already received hundreds of contributions, mostly against the proposal. Members of the public can provide feedback to TMR by phoning 1800 335 625, emailing [email protected] or visiting TMR’s website tmr.qld.gov.au and searching for ‘TNSTC’. MEETING BEING HELD AT WESTBROOK Member for Condamine Pat Weir will be meeting with concerned residents to discuss the potential impact of the proposed transport corridor. A meeting has been organised for next Monday, 31 July at 6pm at Aberfeldy Barn, 124 Macaulay Road, Westbrook. Consultation extended The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has extended the consultation period for the proposed Toowoomba North South Transport Corridor, which has already caused quite a lot of controversy.

Seasonally, certain groups arrive in the Darling Downs region and target vulnerable residents, particularly seniors, through door-to-door approaches, offering seemingly affordable home maintenance services. These services include roof cleaning, roof maintenance, general repairs, driveways, and bitumen work. These people operate by intimidating residents to coerce them into accepting their services and then demand payment for sub-par or even non-existent work. Consequently, many homeowners find themselves burdened with additional costs to fix the poorly completed tasks. Be cautious of placards on poles or trees advertising these services, as they may appear unprofessional or simplistic. When contacting the numbers listed on these advertisements, exercise extra caution as they may not represent legitimate and skilled tradespeople. Fortunately, licensed builders are mandated to carry their credentials while working, offering a means for residents to verify their authenticity. Always insist on seeing their identification before engaging with any service providers. To safeguard against potential problems, police strongly advise homeowners to exclusively deal with reputable trades companies or individuals. Choosing reliable professionals will not only provide peace of mind but also ensure that the job is done correctly the first time, saving homeowners from unnecessary stress and expenses in the future. Last week, retiring Mayor Paul Antonio said he saw great merit in continuing primary support for the festival, which is organised under the banner of the Toowoomba International Multicultural Society (TIMS) and its various sponsors and supporters. “The Fiesta continues to showcase our Region’s rich cultural composition,” Mayor Antonio said. TRC Environment and Community Services committee chair Cr James O’Shea said the Fiesta added great value to the Region’s events calendar. “The event is our signature multicultural festival,” Cr O’Shea said. Cr Sommerfield under investigation Cr Nancy Sommerfield is the subject of an investigation following an unsubstantiated allegation she made against Toowoomba Regional Council CEO Brian Pidgeon that he had tolerated the throwing of a pen by one Council staff member at another. Councillors spent hours in last Wednesday’s meeting over the incident, but were unable to come up with a decision. Cr Sommerfield released a statement which said Council must consider the investigator’s report and decide whether the allegation is substantiated. Council has not yet done so. She said the matter is an allegation only and not yet proven.

The research is part of a four-year, $2.58 million innovative pigeonpea initiative. New research holds promise for pigeonpea Queensland scientists have their finger on the pulse with their first of its kind research into pest challenges in pigeonpea. There is currently limited research on pest-crop interactions of pigeonpea, particularly the key caterpillar pest, Helicoverpa armigera (formerly known as Heliothis). DAF research scientist Trevor Volp has been studying the potential to develop pigeonpea varieties less susceptible to the pest via host-plant resistance. Host-plant resistance research has experienced substantial success in other Queensland crops including sorghum and cotton. “Grain growers need a summer legume for sustainable and profitable rotations in drier regions where mungbean and soybean are not wellsuited,” Mr Volp said. “Pigeonpea will also help Queensland better meet increasing demand for highvalue pulse exports.” The caterpillar pest Helicoverpa armigera is known to affect pigeonpea crop.

Hamilton, Liberal National Party of Queensland, 516 Ruthven, Toowoomba QLD 4350. This Voice proposal would be the biggest change to Australia’s Constitution – our nation’s rule book – in history. It is important we have a full understanding of the proposal, its consequences, and are able to make an informed decision. In January this year, I wrote to both the Prime Minister and the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, inviting them to Toowoomba and offering to facilitate an opportunity for residents to be informed on the proposal. I have received no response. I continue to receive countless emails and phone calls from residents, seeking details that will assist them in making an informed decision on the proposed Voice to Parliament. I find it disappointing that the Labor Government has chosen to progress this debate in the absence of detail and continues to ignore the questions and concerns of our community. I am committed to ensuring our community has the chance to engage in meaningful discussion prior to the upcoming referendum and was delighted when Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs, agreed to come to Toowoomba to share her thoughts on ‘The Voice’. This event will take place at Rumours International on Monday the 14th August 2023. If you are interested in attending, please get in contact with my office. My position remains a ‘No’ on principle. I believe in unity and equality but fear this Voice will permanently divide us. It is already doing so, the polls show it, the commentary shows it, and we haven’t even had a vote yet. Jacinta is coming to Toowoomba Later this year, a referendum will be held to decide if we alter our Constitution to create a permanent Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Some lots will have direct access to Tranter Street, while others will have access from two internal roads that will be built in a ‘hammerhead’ shape. The area will welcome many new houses and residents over the next few years, as nearby at Top Camp, a 27 lot subdivision was also recently approved, as well as there being other estates currently being constructed. 23 lot Mount Rascal subdivision approved Toowoomba Regional Council has given its approval to 23 lot development application at Mount Rascal. Laser light show for Toowoomba Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has reaffirmed its support for the inaugural Eclipse Toowoomba – a LUNA Light Journey to be held in Easter of 2024. “The updated timeline will see the event take place over a 23-day period incorporating the school holidays, in a less cool period of the year which will likely see an increase in visitor numbers and money being injected into our local businesses.”Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said. “Council was excited about the benefits for the community under the original proposal which forecast around $3.45 million into the local economy. “While this event has successfully been held in other locations in Queensland, this will be the first time it’s come to our Region and promises to be an event for the entire family.” Laser light shows such as the Livid Live display projected onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House in June this year have proven to be very popular with audiences but are more environmentally friendly than fireworks displays. Laser light displays are often used as backdrops for rock concerts with bands such as Pink Floyd, The Who and the Electric Light Orchestra being pioneers of the early use of laser lighting for concerts. Eclipse Toowoomba – a LUNA Light Journey will be an experience not to be missed and is scheduled to be open to the public from Friday 22 March to Saturday 13 April 2024.

Coupled with the $150,000 of funding that has been set aside by both Drayton State School and the Drayton State School Parents and Citizens’ Association – we have unlocked close to half a million dollars in funding upgrade. I would like to thank all members of the school community, including the Federal Member for Groom, the State Member for Condamine, the Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor and the Parents and Citizens’ Association President and Executive Members for their letters of support, alongside officers from the Department of Education. I am looking forward to meeting with the Department as we gain clarity on the commencement of the SSS project (which for us, means the commencement of Stages I, J, K and L of the Landscape Master Plan) and a status update on other facilities grants awaiting approval, including the Senior Playground (aiming for up to $150,000) and refurbishment of the Amenities/Toilet Block. - Aleksandr Taylor-Gough, Principal

Cambooya State School MIGHTY MINI BEASTS Recently the Year 4 class from Cambooya State School went to visit Amaroo Environmental Education Centre where they became “Entomologists in Training”. They spent the day learning about insects and other arthropods in the local area. The Year 4s carried out an experiment involving meat ants and the foods they like to eat. Unfortunately, the day was a little cool and the meat ants were a little sleepy. They did learn a lot from the day though. Did you know that an arthropod has an exoskeleton? They also discovered that the arthropods are the largest group in the animal kingdom.
