A couple of weeks ago, C16 Steam engine 106 went on its maiden trip having departed Drayton station at 10am before a large crowd of train enthusiasts. It travelled through Finnie, Wyreema, Southbrook and Pittsworth before turning around at Brookstead. The crew, led by operations manager Andrew Caldwell, was pleased with how the engine went with no issues whatsoever. This engine was the last one built at the Toowoomba Foundry in 1914 and has found its home back at DownSteam. DownsSteam chair Ros Scotney said 106 has been lovingly restored by volunteers in “a truly amazing achievement.” “Thanks to Clive Berghofer AM over the past four years, his generous donation has enabled DownsSteam to bring 106 back to her former glory,” Ms Scotney said. “There are still some processes to go through to get full accreditation to take passengers but there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.” She said passenger trips with carriages could begin as soon as early 2024 which would be a significant tourism boost for towns and regions of the Darling Downs. Hamilton, Liberal National Party of Queensland, 516 Ruthven, Toowoomba QLD 4350. Anthony Albanese was elected on a promise to lower the cost of living for Australians – he promised that Australians would be better off under his government. Labor promised to reduce energy bills by $275, but energy bills have skyrocketed. They promised cheaper mortgages, but interest rates have increased 11 times under Labor. They promised to get inflation under control, but there is no plan in sight and Australians are paying the price. The Coalition knows the cost of living is the number one issue facing Australians right now – that’s why we set up the Select Committee on the Cost of Living to find sensible solutions that will make a real impact for ordinary Australians. But to do that, the Committee needs to hear directly from you about the real, everyday pressures that you’re facing so they know exactly where the pressure points are. If you have five minutes spare, head to yourcostofliving.au to complete the survey and share your story about how you’re coping with the rising cost of living. I know many households in Groom are making tough decisions about their budgets right now. It’s a shame that Jim Chalmers and Anthony Albanese weren’t prepared to do the same with theirs. I will hold the Albanese Government to account for the promises they made during the election and I will continue to fight for the issues that matter to you. Labor’s cost of living crisis is hitting Australians hard right now. Here in Groom, I hear from residents each day about the rising cost of housing, healthcare, fuel, food and the struggle to keep the lights on. DEAN LYONS BUILDING PTY LTD. The ‘Lost Conversations’ Local artists on show in Warwick The Back Road Artists, comprised of artists from the local area, are currently hosting an exhibition entitled Lost Conversations at the Warwick Art Gallery. theme was inspired by Rhonda Jenner, who, growing up with hearing loss, has had to face and overcome “lost conversations” in her life. Back Road Artists Angela Hart and Kerry Chant said each artist had their own take on how to incorporate this topic into their work, which resulted in a “hugely diverse” range of art. Building upon hearing loss, other artists represented ‘Lost Conversations’ through the topics of dementia, intergenerational differences between parents and their children, electronic communication breakdown, loss of mail service and communication between humans and animals. Warwick Art Gallery is located at 49 Albion Street, Warwick. It is open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 1pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday and Monday. Hotter, dryer summers bad news for farmers The latest Federal Intergenerational Report suggests crop yields could be up to 4 per cent lower by 2063. Reduced yields are expected due to increased frequency and severity of extreme weather, including droughts, as well as most crops producing less in higher temperatures. Stephanie Gray, a campaigner at Queensland Conservation Council says that Queensland needs to do its part to reduce climate emissions. “This report should be an alarm bell for everyone in our community because no matter if you’re a construction worker, farmer, or tourism operator increasing global temperatures will have negative impacts on your hip-pocket,” she said. “The longer we delay taking action to reduce emissions, the higher those costs will be. “In Queensland our economy is heavily supported by agriculture and tourism. “Tens of thousands of people rely on the health of the Great Barrier Reef for employment. “We have a lot to lose if we don’t act now. “Queensland has one of the worst emission reduction targets in the country,” Ms Gray said. “We’re urgently calling on the Premier to increase Queensland’s climate ambition and aim for at least a 60 per cent by 2030 emission reduction target.” Currently Queensland has a 30 per cent by 2030 emission reduction target, but the State has already achieved a 29 per cent reduction. Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said dry times have hit early and hit hard. “Farmers around the country have been unsettled by how quickly the rain ‘tap’ has been turned off,” Mr Warlters said. “In June last year, Rural Aid received 6 requests for a water tank refill. In June this year, Rural Aid received 21 requests for a water tank refill.” “It’s a huge increase and shows that the pain of low rainfall is already being felt in the bush.”

ROBOCUP JUNIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS The Vale View State School community was absolutely thrilled with the amazing achievements of talented Vale View students at the recent Robocup Junior State Championships on 19 August 2023 in Brisbane! They have dedicated themselves to this event and their year long training and preparation has definitely paid off. Despite the challenges they faced along the way, students never gave up and their perseverance shone through brilliantly. Our small school has again made its mark on the state, dominating the categories entered! We couldn’t be prouder of our Primary Line Rescue team, who, as the youngest competitors in their division and firsttime participants, secured a well-deserved second place! In the Novice Onstage category, our talented team ‘Snap Twice’, claimed first place! In the Experienced Onstage division, where they competed against students much older than them, including year 12 students, our extraordinary students triumphed and achieved an outstanding second place! We couldn’t help but beam with pride as our little country school brought home these well-deserved trophies. These remarkable teams have now qualified for the National level, which will be held in Melbourne. We will continue to support and cheer on our incredible students! Way to go, Vale View State School! Acacia pycnantha (Golden Wattle) – Australia’s national floral emblem. Photo, S D Searle Let your garden blaze in the nation’s colours. Wattles are pioneer plants. They loosen the soil and enrich it with nitrogen for all the plants around them. Wattles sum up ancient and modern Australia. They are a statement of our land’s antiquity – they have grown here for 30 million years. They tell the story of our land – from being embedded in Aboriginal society through to being the national floral emblem of modern multi-cultural Australia. They grow quickly in harsh conditions and sustain our wildlife, providing shade and shelter and Celebrate National Wattle Day Friday, 1 September is National Wattle Day. protein-rich seed and pollen for parrots and bees respectively. Their colour lifts our spirits at the end of winter as they perfume the Australian bush and reminds us to care for this land and the life it sustains. There are more than 1,070 native Acacia species to choose from and they grow in all parts of the country. Wattle expresses the uniqueness of this great southern land and has become a unifying symbol of Australia for all Australians. Just as Wattle makes a statement, so too the Golden Wattle Award, announced each year on National Wattle Day, draws our attention to Australians who have also ‘made a statement’ in their lives by incredible achievements and being an inspiration to the nation and Australians. Last year’s recipient of the Golden Wattle Award was the Lismore community in New South Wales.

Rhys’s mother Amy said he cannot wait for his trip to the United States in five weeks’ time, when he’ll be staying with a family in Temecula, California. Rhys Cooper kicking goals Westbrook’s Rhys Cooper, a student of Harristown State High School, has been selected in an Australian football (soccer) side that will spend three months in the United States. As part of an exchange program, the Empire Surf Soccer Club sent players to Queensland to play football. Amy said Rhys became fast friends with the boy who stayed at his house, whose family will be returning the favour when Rhys travels overseas. “They got on real well,” Amy said, “He’s really excited.” With three months away from home, Rhys will be attending school online. His family, although not able to travel with him, will be cheering him on from home and with modern communication will be able to keep in contact with him. Rhys and his family moved to Australia in 2020 from North Yorkshire in England. He has been a football prodigy since a young age, trialling with Real Madrid when he was just seven-years-old and starting with the North Yorkshire academy at age eight. At club level, Rhys initially played for the Pittsworth Vikings and now plays for Willowburn. Rhys, who usually plays a centre-back, is a winner of the Golden Boot award for Willowburn and is captain of the Darling Downs representative side. Rhys is not the only boy from Harristown High to be going to the USA, as his peer Brayden will be travelling as well, as a referee.
