WHAT EXACTLY ARE MOOCHER AND FREE RIDER. . . Have you heard aboutthe term 'free rider' or 'moocher'? A free rider or moocher is an individual or group of people that refuse to share burden and demand resources or outcome be shared as ifit is their own, even while they aren't contributing fairly to the effort, burden or even anything at all. To be clear, itis when someone expectthe same benefitfrom a community or group while making little to no contribution. That sounds awful, right? The term "free rider problem" actively refers to the educational system, specifically higher education, when assignment are usually assign in a group with the main purpose of nurturing the teamwork of students, there's definitely drawback that occurs. However, moocher aren't frequently found only in educational institute; many aspect of our lives are filled with this problem.It could be within our workplace, home,friends even family. Most people pray to never enconuter this type of person in their daily life. 4
Social loafing, on the other hand, is a phenomenon where a person or a group of people exertless effort when working in a group than when they're working alone. While they tend to give utmost effort on individualtasks, they put aside group tasks for different reasons. This is mainly caused by the understanding that every member ofthe group may step inwhen needed and as well as a lack of motivation because one is sure the work will be done with or withouttheir contribution. Aside from free rider and moocher,they also implied as bloodsucker, parasyte or free loader. Free riders are notorious for causing difficulty in society; society despises them as they're seen as individuals without responsibility,threat's to one hard work, and shameless people with horrible personalities. LET'S TAKE A BRIEF EXAMPLE OF FREE RIDERSin different communities and circumstances Moocher often show their true colours in educational institutes, where's it's easier to spotthem. Letit be primary, secondary or even tertiary education centre. These type of people seem to never stop popping out of nowhere, right? You must've atleast once experienced such a journey with the same group as them, or atleast heard aboutthem throught a friend of yours. In educational institutes, it's common to unintentionally walk on the landmine of being in a group with a free rider when working in a group project or assignment. They frequently pilfer on you and your teammates diligence and make ittheir own.It could be thatthey refuse to participate in discussions, refuse to do their part on research papers, are hardly to be contacted or even refuse to take partin presentation, but atthe end,they insist on receiving the same grade as the rest oftheir teammates without contributing a cent. In the workplace, a leopard doesn't change it's spots, as the saying goes. You will often meetthe same person who never grew up from their free riders behaviour. When working on a team,they will continue using the same flimsy justification to continue their parasitic behaviour, and when the team is succesfull,they demand bonuses and also receive praise from their boss without actually contributing as much as others did. Free riders also occurs in the comfort of your own home, or dormitory.It could be your roommate or housemate are free rider. For example, you're the one who constantly do the work such as washing the dishes or cleaning the toilet. Your moocher roommate and housemate, on the other hand, never bat an eye or even offer assistance to you while they are enjoying the benefits. 6

The idea thatindividual contributions have no influence on the result Being in a group with different points of view and understanding while discussing a specific topic, and moreover, with someone who seems to be trustworthy and brilliant makes the free rider believe thatthey don’t have to make an individual contribution as it will have zero influence on the result as the other members are more astute; while on that note, why nottake advantage? 3. Several people believe that someone else will handle a task or project;there is a diffusion of responsibility. In a group,the number of members gives you a sense of security. You feel secure knowing that even if you haven't done your bit, someone else will. For example,free riders often aim to be in a group with the dean's list since they are aware thatthis particular set of people would never give up on their project, ensuring thattheir mark will be secure. The free rider will enjoy the rest oftheir time, diffusing their responsibility on the hands of others, knowing fully wellthatthey will eventually benefitfrom it. Everything has a reason,including this tendency to take advantage of others. Before moving on we should take a few free rider factors into account. 1. No enforcement or penalties for this behaviour It's understandable to refute that enforcement measures and penalties are often given outto moochers, butit's also undeniable to state thatthis doesn't happen in every case. For some reason, a few in higher position refuse to take this matter seriously because it did not cause a big problem in the end;the project ended in good result, and the assignmentis submitted on time. Regardless of who did and didn't participate in it, some people find it difficultto proceed it with a lenght measure that require so much time and effortto 'capture'this free rider. So without suffering any repercussions,the free riders now took this as their token ofimmunity to again and again did the same thing. People can use the same benefits from the consumption of goods.Therefore,they will actto maximise their own utility leading to excessive consumption. 3.Shortage of goods and resources Goods or resources are not economically feasible to produce. Businesses don’t wantto provide public goods because they are unprofitable. They don’t earn enough revenue to cover production costs. The more people who use itfor free, the smaller the revenue. DURING THE MID-SEMESTER BREAK, WE CONDUCTED A SURVEY ONLINE VIA THE GOOGLE FORM PLATFORM FOR STUDENTS OF ALL COURSES IN UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA (UITM) DENGKIL REGARDING FREE RIDER. THE RESPONSES HAVE BEEN VERY NEGATIVE TOWARDS THE FREE RIDER. QUESTIONS THAT WERE ASKED IN THE SURVEY INCLUDE: • HOW WILL YOU CONFRONT FREE RIDERS IN YOUR GROUP? THE RESPONSES WERE MOSTLY SIMILAR SAYING THEY WOULD CONFRONT THEM (THE FREE RIDER) PERSONALLY, ASKING THEM WHY THEY DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE GROUP ASSIGNMENTS OR WORK, AND ADVISING THEM TO CHANGE. HOWEVER, SOME PEOPLE SAY OTHERWISE, SUCH AS THEY WOULD NOT CONFRONT THEM BUT RATHER JUST INFORM THE LECTURER OR TEACHER ABOUT THEIR BEHAVIOUR AND LET THE LECTURER OR TEACHER DECIDE WHAT TO DO. OTHER THAN THAT, SOME EVEN SAY THAT THEY WOULD JUST REMOVE THEIR NAME FROM THE ASSIGNMENT OR GROUP AND NOT INCLUDE THEM. • HOW TO IDENTIFY FREE RIDERS? THE COMMON RESPONSE WAS THAT FREE RIDERS ARE THOSE WHO DO NOT CONTRIBUTE ANYTHING TO THEIR GROUP ASSIGNMENT OR WORK. OTHER THAN THAT, SOME SAY THAT FREE RIDERS ARE THE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO ANY WORK AND DO NOT EVEN REPLY TO ANY MESSAGES REGARDING THE ASSIGNMENT OR WORK. SOME WERE ALSO VERY PASSIONATE WITH THEIR RESPONSE, SAYING THAT “GOLONGAN NI DALAM KATEGORI SALAH SENDIRI TAK NAMPAK, KALAU REPORT, DIA PANDAI MANIPULATE BAGI NAMPAK DIA LAH TERPALING TERSAKITI, BANYAK PROB, SLOW LEARNER DAN SEBAGAINYA, BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE, THIS PARTICULAR GOLONGAN PRIORITISE GAME, MOVIE,REST, ONCALL BF/GF AND HANG OUT RATHER THAN BUAT ASSIGNMENTS, JAGA2, THIS GOLONGAN PANDAI MANIPULATE” WHICH BASICALLY SAYS THAT FREE RIDERS ARE PEOPLE WHO DO ARE SELFISH AND MANIPULATE PEOPLE TO NOT CONTRIBUTE OR DO ANY WORK. • ARE FREE RIDERS BAD OR GOOD? FOR THIS SPECIFIC QUESTION, WE HAVE GIVEN THEM A POLE TO CHOOSE WHETHER IT WAS YES OR NO AND ALL OF THE RESPONSES CHOSE BAD. WHICH ALIGNS WITH THE REST OF THEIR RESPONSE TO THE SURVEY. • HOW TO AVOID FREE RIDERS? THE THIRD HIGHEST RESPONSE WAS TO LEAVE THEM WHICH WAS (31.6%) AND THE LAST ONE WAS TO CURSE THEM WHICH WAS (15.8%). • DO YOU THINK MOOCHERS (FREE RIDERS) SHOULD BE GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE OR NOT? WE ALSO INCLUDED A POLE WHICH CONSISTED OF YES OR NO AND THE MAJORITY CHOSE YES (84.2%) WHILE SOME CHOSE NO (15.8%). • WHAT CAUSES SOMEONE TO BECOME A FREE RIDER? THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE WAS THAT IT WAS DUE TO LAZINESS. HOWEVER, SOME INCLUDE OTHER REASONS SUCH AS, “LACK OF DIRECTION, LAZINESS, LACK OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE MEMBERS.” WHICH BASICALLY SUMS UP THE MAJORITY OF THE OTHER RESPONSES. • HOW DO YOU AVOID FREE RIDERS? THE MAJORITY OF THE RESPONSE SAYS TO CHOOSE WISELY WHEN CHOOSING A GROUP MEMBER BUT SOME ALSO INCLUDE ADVICE FOR THE FREE RIDERS AND DIVIDING ALL THE WORK WISELY. AS A HUMAN BEING,IT IS NORMAL FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE A HARD TIME OR A PERSONAL COMMITMENT THAT IT MAY BE HARD FOR THEM TO DO THE TASK GIVEN . THAT IS WHY WE NEED TO ASK THEM AND NOT JUST ASSUMING THEIR PROBLEM LIKE OUR OWN . HENCE,WE CAN BE MORE THOUGHTFUL UPON HEARING THEIR SITUATION AND GIVE MORE LENIENT WORK. SECONDLY , AS A GROUPMATES , IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOU TO REMIND HE/SHE TO DO THEIR WORK. OWING TO THE FACT THAT THEY MAYBE HAVE OVERLOOK ABOUT THEIR WORK THAT NEED TO BE DONE. THAT WAY YOU HAVE HELP THEM TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS AND YOUR GROUP GOALS .THEREFORE , THE TASK WILL BE DONE EARLIER . HOWEVER , IF HE/SHE STILL DOESN’T DO THEIR TASK , YOU SHOULD JUST BE COMPLETELY HONEST AND FACE THEM TO DO THEIR WORK WITHIN THE TIME THAT YOU SET OR ELSE THEIR NAME WILL BE REMOVE . THIS WAY MAYBE WILL GIVE HIM/ HER PRESSURE TO THEIR WORK SO THAT THEY WILL HAVE MARKS IN THAT TASK . LASTLY , IF YOU HAVE DONE ALL OF THE TECHNIQUE AND HE/SHE STILL DOESN’T DO THEIR WORK , YOU COULD SEEK FOR YOUR ADVISOR TO GIVE THEIR OPINION REGARDING THIS MATTER . a free rider is someone who takes advantage of others without doing anything particularly during their routines days.A free rider will only add to the burden simply because there is no advantage to being or having a free rider. That is why everyone should take action towards them in order to demonstrate that being a free rider will not help them become a better or useful person in the future.If you notice yourself being a free rider,you should immediately take action to avoid becoming one of them.Furthermore,it is advisable for us to do something rather than nothing at all.
