We have to build our own power. We have to win every single political office
we can, where we have a majority of black people... The question for black
people is not, when is the white man going to give us our rights, or when is
he going to give us good education for our children, or when is he going to
give us jobs-if the white man gives you anything-just remember when he
gets ready he will take it right back. We have to take for ourselves.
-Fannie Lou Hamer

We’re gonna have to do more than talk. We’re gonna have to do more than listen.
We’re gonna have to do more than learn. We’re gonna have to start practicing and
that’s very hard. We’re gonna have to start getting out there with the people and
that’s difficult. Sometimes we think we’re better than the people so it’s gonna
take a lot of hard work” - Fred Hampton (Black Panther Party) 1948 - 1969

Celebrating Black History Month

Antonio Delgado is running for Congress in New York’s 19th
Congressional District. Antonio grew up in a home with two full-

time working parents who taught him the value of hard work,
public service and giving back to the community. While at Colgate
University, Antonio never took his opportunity for granted. He was

awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and went on to study law at
Harvard. Both Antonio and his wife, Lacey, were raised to believe
that with success comes responsibility. In the Hudson Valley, the
American Dream should be an attainable dream. Now, more than

ever, it is time to stand up and Þght for American values.

The right of all Americans to access affordable, high-quality healthcare
is under constant attack. However, African-Americans face unique
obstacles to sexual and reproductive healthcare, and these challenges
impact the Black community in distinct ways.
African-Americans are 40% more likely to die of breast cancer and
twice as likely to lose their lives to cervical cancer than non-Hispanic
whites. African-Americans account for almost half of the 1.1 million
people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States, and are likelier to be
diagnosed with chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis than non-Hispanic
whites. African-Americans have more unintended and teen
pregnancies, and as a result, have higher rates of abortion.
African-American women are more likely to be uninsured or
underinsured and are often forced to delay care, which – in the case
of cancer – may cause patients to miss crucial opportunities for early
detection. Since Black women tend to be diagnosed later than other
groups, they experience higher death rates.
Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley (PPMHV) works to protect
and advocate for sexual and reproductive rights of African-Americans
and reduce racial disparities in healthcare. Crucial services like cancer
screenings, STD testing and treatment and affordable birth control, as
well as education and outreach, deliberately serve to close these
reproductive healthcare gaps.
PPMHV also organizes powerful diversity initiatives in Kingston,
through a Dyson Foundation grant, as well as in Newburgh and
Poughkeepsie through its Promoter/Promotores outreach, which trains
and deploys residents to provide information, referrals and
appointment assistance to increase service access and awareness.
PPMHV also spearheads the Poughkeepsie and Newburgh Healthy
Black and Latino Coalitions, a network of health/human service
organizations and community members that work to improve the
well-being of their respective communities.
With nearly 20,000 patients across Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and
Sullivan counties, PPMHV is proud to be a local leader in the national
fight to ensure high-quality, affordable healthcare for all.
