A WORD FROM SAA
OUR PRESIDENT & CEO NATIONAL STAFF
Attending our events over the summer is always the highlight of my year. But Janel Jorgensen Maggie Rosenbaum
this summer something special happened: I was able to hear cancer survivor McArdle Program Manager
Kate Winne speak at one of our swims. President & CEO
Meeting Kate made an impact on my life not only because she represents the Blake Chanowski Craig Beardsley
millions of people we aim to help, but also because she is proof that our formula is Vice President Pool Director
working. The funds our swimmers and sponsors raised literally funded her clinical of Operations
trial. She attributes her survival to Swim Across America and hearing her story was
undoubtedly one of the most inspiring moments of the year. She shared with us Kathleen Mannion
all the lessons “the Big C” taught her about living, about being embraced by her Director of Programs
community and having the courage to battle against the disease.
SAA
“At Swim Across America, cancer is alienated from all of the positive energy BOARD OF
that humans can generate when focused on a common enemy. We have DIRECTORS
hope in seemingly hopeless circumstances. We work and participate and
volunteer to help people we do not know and may never know. Against these Kerry Anderson Jack Salerno
collective efforts, cancer doesn’t stand a chance.” Secretary
Kevin Shine
Kate inspired all of us to continue with our incredibly valuable work in the fight Robert Coakley
against cancer. In 2014, we raised more money than ever before and even Treasurer Doug Towne
ventured into international waters for the first time, with two English Relay
Channel teams! Next year, we plan to grow exponentially not only by adding more Hugh Curran Evan Vosburgh
open water swims, but also by attempting to break the Guinness Book of World Chairman
Records by hosting the largest multi-city swim meet in history! Matt Vossler
Bill Hicks Co-Founder
On behalf of the Swim Across America family, thank you. You help this Vice President Burt Zweigenhaft
organization grow and make a difference in the lives of many people. We pledge to
remain united and to continue with our mission of “Making Waves Scot Mackie
to Fight Cancer.”
Pam Ryan
Sincerely,
Janel Jorgensen McArdle
President & CEO

26 OUR STORIES: BENEFICIARY
SEATTLE CANCER CARE ALLIANCE SAA
BENEFICIARY BENEFICIARIES
Since 2009, hundreds of people have gathered on the shores of Lake
Washington for the Swim Across America Seattle Open Water Swim to raise
money for Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). By 2014, SAA Seattle had raised
$1million and SCCA renamed its Cellular Therapy Laboratory the Swim Across
America Cellular Therapy Laboratory to honor the hard work of dedicated event
directors, donors, volunteers, and swimmers who give their time and effort year
after year.
“We’re a fundraiser for cancer research first and foremost,” said event
co-chair, David Day. “We wanted to target our contributions to make a
significant impact and we’re very proud to be with SCCA. The people are incredibly
generous with their time and support, and we work well together. Our
volunteerism and creative fundraising efforts allow us to donate the highest
percent of what we raise.” SAA – Seattle raised $225,000 in 2014 and funds are
supporting SCCA’s mission to find better treatments for cancer, determine
ways to prevent it, diagnose it sooner and more effectively, and ultimately cure
cancer. SCCA’s Swim Across America Cellular Therapy Laboratory is integral to the
bone marrow transplantation process and is making great strides in their research.
“Since the first year of the SAA Seattle swim, their donation has funded
efforts to develop and perfect the process of cell selection in immunotherapy
protocols at SCCA. We have supported specific protocols and trained staff
using Miltenyi CliniMACS machines. Frankly, SAA’s support has been the
vital funding source to help Swim Across America Cellular Therapy Lab
become a center of excellence for cell selection. The expertise in cell selection is
currently helping the immunotherapy industry (companies like Juno Therapeutics) to
accelerate at least one clinical trial they are working on, and hopefully many more as
this industry grows and advances,” said Dr. Ramadan-Jradi, one of SCCA’s esteemed
doctors. SAA Seattle not only supports the Lab, but it also now supports pancreatic
cancer research at the Pancreatic Cancer Specialty Clinic. This support has helped
the multi-disciplinary Pancreas Team at SCCA improve a tissue repository for
researchers, initiate investigator-led pilot studies, and support ongoing clinical trials.
The partnership between Swim Across America and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
proves that together, with a common passion and vision to find a cure, we can and
will Make Waves to Fight Cancer.
