4A this Year...

This year was an epic year for us all! We enjoyed dressing
up for International Day; parading for our parents. Our
educational trip to the Trio Ranch was astounding. We
had an opportunity to ride, groom and feed the horses.
Every Tuesday, we read a story to the Year 2 pupils and
they in turn, read to us. Science Lessons were exciting and
stimulating. The best part was when we experimented
and observed together with Year 4c; how a balloon was
inflated using vinegar and baking soda. Dressing up was
always entertaining. For our Winter Concert, we were
puppets on a string, dressed as Pinocchio.

I loved and enjoyed teaching you, this year. All the best
for next year!

4B this Year...

As the anticipation of summer draws near, I am not yet
ready to end our school year (especially under these cir-
cumstances). As your year 4 teacher, I feel like I am just
beginning to get to know you. It feels only days since we
met in this, possibly the shortest school year of your lives.

In between all of the lessons, projects, tests, and home-
work assignments, I was also learning about you—who
you are and who you have the potential to become. I feel
blessed to be a part of all of your journeys.

longs to those who prepare for it today. “ Malcom X

4C this Year...

This year will be remembered by 4C as their shortest aca-
demic year to date. We have used the time wisely and en-
joyed every minute. From dressing up for Roman Day, to
having an obsession with Narnia, the lion the witch and
the wardrobe. We have expanded our knowledge and
learnt new concepts.

We have developed stronger relationships with our
friends and gained new ones. We have challenged our-
selves in every aspect of school life and have therefore be-
come stronger. Always remember, “things never happen
the same way twice”-C.S. Lewis (Narnia), so always keep
your head up and do your best.

In 5A we had loads of fun this year! We studied the An-
cient Greeks in History, learned about stories from differ-
ent cultures in English and discovered new ways to do
calculations in Maths.

Not only did we learn many more interesting things in ex-
citing and entertaining ways, but we also went on a school
trip to Voila Chocolate, participated in a sports day and
presented an assembly on Roald Dahl and his wonderful
novels for children.

Receiving virtual lessons during Term 2 was a first for us
all and we will also remember how special that made Year
5 for us!

5B this Year...

Wow, what an amazing year, you will never forget being
in Year 5. We started the year getting to know each other
and had some fun along the way.

Our highlights definitely included our amazing Brazil
topic where we got to visit a yummy chocolate factory for
some delicious treats and present a wonderful class as-
sembly to our parents. You have all improved this year at
giving presentations.

You have been amazing adapting to the virtual school en-
vironment and although we all miss our classroom it is
great to see what independent learning you can achieve.

5C this Year...

In term 2 Year 5 looked at ‘What is was like for Children
Living in Victorian Times’ ie between 1987 and 1901. We
learnt that many poor children had to work in jobs such as
chimney sweeps, street sellers, factory workers, farm la-
bourers and even working down the mines. It was a very
dangerous time for children. Class 5C portrayed the life of
rich and poor children through an assembly. It was a won-
derful opportunity for the students to develop stage skills
and confidence. Term 3 saw a dramatic turn of events with
the pandemic that resulted in the school closure and im-
mediate switch to the children of Class 5C learning online.
Mr Garnett and I were amazed at how quickly the chil-
dren adapted, learnt new skills and saw the opportunity
of virtual learning as a positive step towards independent
learning. Mr Garnet and I were extremely proud of Class
5C during this challenging time.

In our Year 6 Science unit, we have been researching how
human activities have negatively impacted different habi-
tats, and what can be done to stop their destruction.

As a result, young leading conservationists of Class 6A
took to the stage and were articulate in presenting their
facts and offering solutions to global problems, during
our KS2 Assembly.

Their message complemented the recent GO2 Green cam-

In Year 6 we have been studying the Shang dynasty so it
only felt appropriate that we celebrate the Chinese New
Year. The students came dressed in Chinese clothing or
the colour red and took part in a variety of activities such
as lantern making and Chinese writing. The children all
shared Chinese food together at the end of the day. Some
children participated in a chopsticks challenge which they
all were very enthusiastic about.

All classes in prep have been meeting weekly with their
reading buddies. The children have been listening to each
other read and sharing books together. year 6 have been
reading to the Nursery children as well as helping them
fix puzzles and practise drawing and writing.

6C this Year...

In year 6C this year, we had a great time exploring around
the world, we visited the Ancient Shang Dynasty of China
in our Assembly, the Congolese Rainforest, Antarctic, The
Great Barrier Reef, The Rub Al Khali, the African Savan-
nah and the Himalayas as we researched different habi-
tats, food chains and environmental problems around the
world, and invited our parents in to see our hard work.

One of the most important things we learned most of all
this year though, is to be kind. We talked lots about how
we should respect and treat others, whoever they may
be. We practiced this by visiting the Nursery each week
to read (and sometimes play) with them. We learned to
believe in ourselves, take risks and try new things, talk,
explain and reason with our thoughts and ideas to help us
become life-long learners.

teaching in Prep school becomes evident in their develop-

learning plays a huge role in what we do in the PE depart-

to pursue knowledge of physical education and prepare
themselves to be active, healthy and happy in their mind
body and soul. One of the major developments within the
swimming this year has seen the introduction of a differ-
entiated curriculum that not only covers the four major
strokes of swimming but; Rookie lifeguard, water polo,
adapted water games and competitive swimming which
has been well received from both students and parents.
Progression at JPGS

Expectation at JPGS has grown and grown due to the
commitment of the staff, students and parents to sport
at the school. Every team had bulging numbers in antici- RSAC U14 Boys Football Team 1
pation of selection to represent JPGS at Red Sea, Saikac
and BSME events. The teams plunged into all their events
brimming with optimism, enthusiasm, team spirit and
confidence. JPGS continued to show their new lease of life
to the rest of the kingdom’s schools with impressive traits:
- hard work, organisation, teamwork, concentration and
tactical awareness on show and in abundance. Again we
showed from the results table year to year that we have
progressed in nearly every area becoming not only a suc-
cessful sports school but one that is now feared and seen
as favourites whenever we arrive at a tournament. It has
been a wonderful year here @JPGS wolves, we have had
some fantastic results in all competitions continuing our
impressive rebuild of JPGS sport. As well as all the local
tournaments next year we are very keen to participate in RSAC U14 Boys Football Team 2
the U11/15 BSME as oppose to the U13 this year we have
chosen to enter the U15 if organization time permits this,
Med cup (Italy) and a return Ski trip (Switzerland) after
our very successful first ski trip.

Red Sea

The Red Sea competition is in some ways a warm up for
the Saikac tournaments and a chance for the teams to both
be ‘match fit’ and get a first-hand look at their competi-
tion in each sport respectively. This competition also al-
lows schools to take more than one team with its aim to
increase participation and allow young sportspersons to
experience competitive play. This worked really well for RSAC U14 Boys Football Team 3
JPGS Wolves this year as we have had more participation
and interest in sport than in any year I can remember.
Mr Lowe and Mr Gilbert had over 50 students compet-
ing for a place in the U14 boy’s football team as-well as
Mrs Warren and Mr Leo having 30 plus students for the
U14 girls basketball team. The wolves recorded some fan-

other schools. The dedication of months of training paid
off with some excellent results in the different disciplines.
As ever our student’s behaviour was exemplary and the
staff were proud of their efforts both on and off the fields,

memories to take forward and experiences we can learn

Coaching demands more cooperation and passion from
the students since it is an optional choice for them. This
means a swimmer chooses to be part of our school swim-

Annual Sports Day 2020
Saudi National Day 2019-20

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was once known as the
kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz. On September 23rd, 1932, by
virtue of a royal decree from king Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud,
the name – change took place. It makes the unification of
the modern-day kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia
National Day only became a public holiday in 2007. In
2005, Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz
announced that from the 75th National Day, the occasion
will become an annual national holiday. The Kingdom
marks National Day with folk dances, songs and tradi-
tional festivals. The roads and buildings are decorated
with Saudi flags.

Every year in JPGS we celebrate this day at the school
with special events and treats for all pupils and teachers.
Pupils wear Saudi National Dress. Boys wear: a thobe and
a ghutrah and girls wear: a traditional jalabiya. Saudi Na-
tional cuisine is served in the cafeteria and the school is
decorated with Saudi flags.

This year we celebrated with a whole school assembly,
beginning by singing the Saudi national anthem, Badr
Baglain, a pupil in Year 10 explained the history of the
Saudi flag, Sarah Alakhal read an Arabic poem and Mrs
Alaa performed a Saudi song. The hall was decorated
with pupil’s work. There was a special performance by
a local folk band, they sang traditional Saudi songs and
performed dances from different regions in the country.

United Nations Day

Jeddah Prep and Grammar school celebrated its rich cul-

year the school included a number of parades and cele-

our community that boasts more than 45 nationalities.

The whole school assembly epitomised the very best of
Jeddah Prep and Grammar school and its multicultural-
ism. Over the years, UN/ International Day has offered
the pupils an opportunity to dress in their national dress
and share food, hear about each other’s culture and learn
about why the United Nations was founded and what
role it plays in today’s world.

The day allowed pupils to express and share their cultural
diversity through flags, music, colourful costumes, and to
spread information about their country, language and cul-
ture. The event also reinforces the school’s philosophy of
offering a stimulating, multi-cultural environment, whilst
promoting tolerance and respect towards one another.

Winter Concert 2019

Our Prep School Winter Concerts took place in December
this year and our students were given the opportunity to
demonstrate their musical talents by performing songs
celebrating the festive season. There were three concerts
in all with each Year Group performing songs on their
own and then coming together to sing in larger groups.

Our Reception students reminded us of the many na-
tionalities represented in the JPGS community with their
rendition of ‘Hello to Children of the World’ before join-
ing with the Nursery students who were able to show off
their familiarity with the drums, claves and woodblocks
as they performed the well-known ‘Mr Macarella’. This
was followed by ‘Jingle Bells’ on sleigh bells.

Years One and Two reminded us of winters somewhat
colder than here in Jeddah as they sang ‘Snowflakes’ and
‘Let it Snow’ before warming up the proceedings with the
‘Christmas Conga’ and ‘Reindeer Dance’.

The Key Stage 2 concert was opened by the Year Sixes,
performing a number from the Nutcracker Suite on a va-
riety of instruments, followed by the ‘Super Mario’ theme
performed by The Keyboard Club. Years Three, Four and
Five then each presented two songs based on the themes
of flying, puppets and books. This concert ended with a
whole School rendition of ‘Morningtown Ride’ and the
now obligatory ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’.

Cancer Awareness

The months of October and November have
been designated as global Cancer aware-
ness months. The School Council organised
a Cancer Awareness Day on Tuesday 5th
November 2019. A special assembly was de-
livered by School Council Representatives to
promote awareness within the school com-
munity. After the assembly pupils in both
Prep and Grammar wrote short messages on
a pink posted note to a person suffering from
cancer. The posted notes were all collected
and made into pink hearts. Pupils and staff
were encouraged to wear pink or blue acces-
sories and donated 10 SR for the pleasure.
The School Council also held a bake sale dur-
ing both Prep and Grammar lunchtimes and
they sold pink and blue ribbons. As a com-
munity we raised over 5,000 SR and this will
be donated to the cancer facility at Al Zahra
Hospital in Jeddah.

Mr Shahzad, the teacher supporting the Can-
cer Awareness Day said, “It was great to see
everyone wearing pink and blue accessories!
I really enjoyed the bake sale and the pupils
and staff were very generous. Congratula-
tions to the School Council for a truly memo
rable day!”

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day and the week leading
up to it was a time of reflection, respect and
deep thought on the past wars and countless
casualties ensuing each conflict. The JPGS
Assembly Commemorating Remembrance
Day on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the
11th month in 1918 was led by Mr Bedford
and consisted of performances, talks, songs
and dances from the whole school.

Prep and Grammar Choirs performed songs
of peace. Grammar had a reading of the fa-
mous ‘In Flanders Fields’, while Year 13 His-
tory students evoked deeper thought when
talking about whether we, as the population
of the world, had learnt from our lessons of
past wars and conflicts.

The school also got to experience a visit from
some special guests, Rifleman Dan Grahan
and Lt Col John Russel. Rifleman Grahan
played, ‘The Last Post’ on the bugle in the
moments leading up to the minute silence
while Lt Col John Russel spoke about his ex-
periences of being called to war along with
the messages left behind from the many
wars this globe has endured.

Annual Sports Day 2020
SAIKAC Music Festival

From Thursday 30th January to Saturday 1st
February, JPGS hosted the SAIKAC Middle
School Music Festival. This involved students
and staff from SAES Dhahran, Abqaiq and
Ras Tanura, The KAUST School, American
International School Jeddah and ISG Jubail
joining pupils from JPGS in a weekend of
music-making. It was the first time JPGS has
hosted the event and it was an incredibly re-
warding experience for the pupils involved.
Participants joined either Band or Choir and
spent a busy weekend rehearsing, culminat-
ing in a Concert on the Saturday afternoon.
The standard of musicianship was extremely
high and rehearsals were intensive, but there
was chance for pupils to unwind on the Fri-
day night with a trip to the Aquarium. The
festival celebrated music, cooperation and
encourages pupils to form new friendships.

JPGS was represented by...
Joud Bahamdaine (7X), Jaannani Sethura-
man (7Y), Aiyla Iqbal (7Y), Yasmine Usher
(7Z), Maha Shehzad (7Z), Alia Zagzoug (7Z),
Selena Elias (8X), Habibah Ishaq (8Y), Haya

Ski Trip to Switzerland

JPGS held its first Ski trip in many years and
was lead by Mr Lowe, Mrs Warren, Mr Hus-
sain and Mrs Trencher. It took place in one of
the most popular resorts in Switzerland, In
the heart of one of the most attractive regions
of the Swiss Alps located at 1500m with lifts
up to the Mont-Fort glacier (3300m).The ski
trip was an extremely valuable experience
for a variety of different reasons. It offered
students a chance to learn and improve their
skiing or snowboarding with expert instruc-
tors. It was also an opportunity to develop
interpersonal and independence skills in a
safe and secure environment with skilled
staff that they trust and know well. The stu-
dents were exemplary and JPGS are invited
back and reserved a place for the forthcom-
ing year. I would just like to say a huge thank
you to all the administration staff, parents
and the 38 students who took part in this trip
it was truly magical.

E-Safety Day

In this age of technology- the internet offers
us many positive opportunities to learn,
create and keep in touch with family and
friends. On the other hand, the internet also
opens up certain risks to its users – especially
the most vulnerable ones, such as children:
privacy concerns, cyberbullying, disinfor-
mation and exposure to potentially harmful
content. Year 1 and 2 pupils learnt through
Smartie the Penguin that they should think-
before they post, “Before you tap and click…
You need to stop and think…And TELL
someone!”. Year 3-6 pupils learnt about pri-
vate and public information. They were re-
minded that they should never give out in-
formation to strangers.

In the Grammar school, an assembly was
conducted where pupils were addressed
about the dangers of cyberbullying followed
by a video. During first and second breaks
pupils in Grammar were encouraged to
make a pledge to keep safe on the internet.
The day ended with a workshop for parents
to discuss concerns on using technology and
alerting them to potentially inappropriate
apps for the young.

International Women’s Day

On the 8th March, JPGS celebrated and sup-
ported International Women’s Day. Pupils
from KS2 upwards were invited to a celebra-
tion assembly to raise awareness of what In-
ternational Women’s Day. The aim of the as-
sembly was to celebrate the social, economic,
cultural and political achievements of wom-
en and promote how to accelerate women’s
equality. We were honoured to have four
female prominent guest speakers from Jed-
dah who shared their journey to success and
discuss the barriers they had to overcome to
get where they are today. These guests in-
cluded Raha Mohrrak (the first Saudi wom-
an and youngest Arab to climb Mount Ever-
est), Mariam Polding (Business entrepreneur
and founder of the first tennis academy in
Saudi for children), Rawan Fayez (Owner of
Sweat Army Gym in Jeddah and parent) and
Rozana AlBawani (entrepreneur who spe-
cialises in Professional Training & Coaching
and public speaking). It was a delight to have
these guests talk to our students and inspire
them to aim high. The underlying message
was to understand “an equal world is an
enabled world” and we all have our part to
play in the journey towards equality. Thank
you to our guests, staff and students who
helped to organise IWD 2019.

Annual Sports Day 2020
Go Green JPGS

The recently concluded, ambitious initiative
at Jeddah Prep and Grammar School known
as the GO2 Green JPGS was a two week long
whole school campaign to make our school
green and eco-friendly.

Hundreds of plants were donated gener-
ously by pupils and staff from both Prep and
Grammar School to help improve our envi-
ronment. As a result, trees are now every-
where on the campus and the air is cleaner
than before. This will not only have a posi-
tive impact on our children’s health and
wellbeing, it will also facilitate teaching and
learning of the Science Curriculum in school.
Tree planting is the cheapest and the most
effective way to tackle the climate crisis.

We would like to thank every member of
our JPGS family who contributed a plant or
plants to make this campaign a huge suc-
cess. Hopefully, the ambient feeling of being
surrounded by plants will make us healthy,
happy and more productive.

94

Model United Nations

Model United Nations conferences occur pe-
riodically around schools in Saudi Arabia.
They provide opportunities for teenage pu-
pils to emerge from the chrysalis of a com-
paratively secluded childhood into some-
thing approximating to the refined and well
ordered rough and tumble of international
politics and diplomacy.

It shows the pupils the wider and indeed
synthetic applicability of what they study
with us here at school. And in our case, this
process came to good fruition. Of the nine
committees, JPGS pupils were nominated
as the best delegates for six and outstanding
delegates for several others! That is from a
cohort of nineteen pupils amongst 250 others
from seven different schools which shows
that the school possesses a sizeable num-
ber who are more than ready to step up, be
aware and be a vital and active part of their
societies. Essentially, they are well on in the
process of becoming educated and wide
thinking men and women.
