Upper Key Stage 2 Coordinator


2021-2022 has been an incredibly exciting year for
the Year five and sixes. We started the year with on-
line learning which tested the resilience and persever-
ance of our pupils. Never-the-less, they continued to
demonstrate the outstanding attitude we came to ex-
pect of them and they continued to progress academi-
cally, even under those trying circumstances.

January saw us rejoicing as the pupils were finally al-
lowed back to school, and what a busy time we have
had since then! The Year 6s were finally allowed to
take up their traditional positions of authority in Prep
and we saw this year’s prefects nominated and chosen.
Both Year 5s and 6’s children were eligible to apply
for a role of Wellbeing Ambassador and they have all
made a huge impact on the happiness and wellbeing of
the Prep School children. They should be lauded for
the efforts they put in.

Academically, they have been equally busy. Due to the
hard work and diligence of the children we fantasti-
cally finished second in the BSME Arabic competition.
The children have also had the opportunity to compete
in the STEM Crest science challenge and international-
ly through the Owlympics.

This year saw a change in teaching methodology to
help us evaluate the abilities of our children after such
a long period of online learning, and then address these
gaps in their knowledge. We started to follow the
creative scheme of Talk for Writing to ensure that
our English lessons were filled with enjoyment
and engagement. The Talk for Writing ap-
proach enables children to read and
write independently for a variety
of audiences and purposes
within different subjects.
We cover a wide range of
genres: from poetry to
playscripts; newpapers
to narrative.

In maths we introduced White Rose Maths which is
designed to follow the National Curriculum of Eng-
land, and encompasses a Concrete, Pictorial and Ab-
stract journey to ensure learners achieve Mastery in
Mathematics. In Upper Key Stage 2, pupils have been
encouraged to consider how mathematics can be used
in a real life context, whereby through the implemen-
tation of a variety of resources and strategies, pupils
were able to apply different mathematical concepts
to solve problems.This year has been fun, challenging
and ultimately rewarding. As always, our children
have risen to whatever challenge has come their way
and addressed themselves wonderfully. They truly are
a credit to JPGS.

The aim of CREST awards (Year 1 to
6) is to make pupils think and behave
like scientists and engineers by design-
ing and developing their own STEM
projects on simple everyday topics that
relate to them. Pupils had to complete
eight challenges to receive a CREST Star certificate and a badge. Most
pupils enthusiastically completed eight and more challenges.

were invited to try a number of outdoor maths activ-

March children decorated themselves mathematical-
ly for World Maths Day, yet another chance to cele-
brate all things mathematical. In March, we celebrated a fan-
tastic Book Week with the
theme, ‘Picture This!’ where we
explored a range of different
picture books and explored the
magic of stories with no words.
This provided great opportu-
nities for discussion together,
developing skills in oracy and
inference, learning to read be-
tween the lines and find hidden
meaning.

Head of Key Stage 3




Persistence. If I were able to describe the character of
the Key Stage 3 pupil body in one word, it would be
this. A key feature linked into the vision and mission
of the school, building upon the life skills ingrained in
our pupils from early stages of their academic lives.

Throughout the previous 3, 2 or single year that they
have been in Key Stage 3, having to adapt to the vari-
ous regulations imposed to help curb infection, having
to wake up in the morning with the support of their
families to log into a virtual classroom, having to then
come into school physically and get to grips with the
orthodox academic day, assessments, social lives out-
side the classroom.

I can sincerely say that I, we, the wider school com-
munity, are proud of the feats accomplished by these
young learners, not only in their tests, projects, reports,
behaviour and manners but also for what we may tend
to overlook having to adapt to these unprecedented
times, persistence.

It has been great to get back to normal with physical
schooling. Both Staff and students have missed each
other. I was delighted that as a school we were grad-
ed outstanding in Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultur-
al (SMSC) in the British Schools Overseas (BSO). This
was an endorsement of the opportunities we give our
pupils to develop as more rounded individuals. Our
wonderful staff have worked tirelessly to provide the
pupils with the best possible experience, which our pu-
pils have taken advantage of. The School Council con-
tinues to be the most effective platform for pupil voice.
Our representatives have worked hard to ensure that
every voice has been heard. The safety and wellbeing
of our pupils has been a key priority of the school. All of
our staff members are trained in Safeguarding. Mental
wellbeing of pupils has been a focus area. We contin-
ued to cover Wellbeing and Mental Health through our
PSHE curriculum. We have appointed Pupil Wellbeing
Ambassadors in both the Prep and Grammar School.
I was also very proud that we were able to complete
our first Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey in
many years.

As KS4 Coordinator I have been proud by the excep-
tional attainment our pupils make in Key Stage 4,
which was also recognised in the BSO Inspection. The
Year 11 pupils are on track of achieving some outstand-
ing results. Our Year 10 pupils have made a great
start to their IGCSEs. The tracking reports
indicate that attainment and engagement is
very high. In PSHE the Year 10 pupils have
studied modules on Personal Finance, En-
terprise, Careers and Mental Health. Our
Year 11 pupils have worked on Exam Tech-
nique, Post 16 Options and Mental Health.
It was a pleasure to invite Zubair Junjunia a
former pupil of JPGS to school to speak to pupils
to speak about exam readiness. Zubair is the found-
er of Z Notes, a learning platform used by millions of
students worldwide. Our Year 11 pupils also attended
workshops on Mindfulness, good mental health and
exam technique just before their study leave for the
Summer Exams.

As I write this statement our Year 10 pupils are prepar-
ing for their Work Experience week. This is an excel-
lent opportunity for the students to explore the world
of work. The pupils are excited and for many they
have found placements in areas they wish to pursue
a career in.

I look forward to the new academic year. Our Year 9
pupils have recently chosen their IGCSE Options. I
thoroughly enjoyed interviewing the pupils. I would
like to finish with wishing the Year 11 pupils the very
best with their IGCSEs and to say goodbye to those
pupils that are leaving us. I wish you every success in
your future endeavours.

As the academic year comes to an end, it’s worth men-
tioning how it’s been an absolute pleasure working
with the Sixth Form pupils this year. They are a credit
to the vision and ethos of the school and encompass
all the attributes of successful lifelong learners. We bid
farewell to the Year 12 leavers and Year 13 graduates
who will be sorely missed.

Having joined Jeddah Prep and Grammar School in
2015, I had the privilege to teach most of the current
Year 13 pupils when they were in Year 7. It feels be-
fitting to be the one responsible for seeing the pupils
through their final year and sending them on their way
to their future endeavours.

I would like to give a special mention to the Head
Team who have been outstanding having organised
a number of socials and events successfully. Some of
these include the charity football event, treasure hunt,
red nose day, the senior sunset, colour run, and the
Ramadan Iftar.

I would also like to thank the Senior Pre-
fects and Subjects Ambassadors and all
the staff involved in making events like
Bounce Team Building, Alumni and Sixth
Form Dinner, Prom, and the Graduation
a success.

In one of the lessons, Mr Matthew proposed to the Year 9
Maths Fast Track class to have an outdoor lesson. The
topic that was being studied was Bearings. Each of the
pupils were paired up and provided with a worksheet.
They spread out across the Jubilee Area with our respec-
tive partners and began working through our tasks. For
this hands on learning activity, we used the map and
scenarios given on the sheet to calculate bearings and
distances using Trigonometry and Pythagoras’ Theo-
rem. It was an engaging and interactive way to learn
how distance, angles and mathematics are involved in
everyday life. The change of environment and out-of-
the-classroom experience helped consolidate our grasp on
the subject matter.

corresponding answer. As the coloured cards join together a shape starts to form and eventu-
ally and magically a large hexagon is created involving all the cards.















Year 13s A2 Mathematics, Pure 3; These brilliant Jpgs budding mathematicians are working with
logarithms of different bases and exponentials of varying powers. The coloured cards are
like dominoes with “start” and “finish”, the students had to join question and answer cards
together forming a “dominoes” effect where all the cards are used and the last card must have
the word ‘finish”.

Computer Science






ICT and Computer Science are popular subjects at
JPGS and as a result, the department has continued to
expand over recent years. We are constantly looking
to update and improve the courses we offer, to keep
up with the rapidly changing digital world around us.
We teach a range of skills at Key Stage 3, including
a mixture of both Computer Science and traditional
ICT-based modules. At Key Stage 4, we offer IGCSE
ICT and Computer Science, which serves as a platform
to Key Stage 5, where our pupils can choose Comput-
er Science at AS and A Level. All of our examinations
follow the Cambridge International curriculum.

Our pupils regularly achieve outstanding results,
which allows them to attend the most prestigious uni-
versities around the world. In recent years, the depart-
ment has flourished and allowed our pupils to attend
some of the best Universities in the world.

Welcome to the English department. The academic
year of 2021 – 2022 will forever be remembered as the
year we returned to face to face classes but also for the
resurrection of the long tradition of the school play.
For three nights our outstanding band of singers and
actors put on a great performance of “Blood Brothers”
to a welcoming and generous audience.

We have continued to build on our drive to develop
reading in the school though literature and with the
return of the library facility, our lower school pupils
are enjoying their dedicated wider reading lessons
that we have built into their timetable.


Book week was a tremendous success with our classroom
door book cover competition where everyone was working
together to transform the school so thank you so much for
all your efforts. I look forward to what comes next and I am
proud of the commitment to excellence all of our students
have shown as we get back to normal.







Drama is a growing feature of our provision, where
performance skills become a stimulus to improve
writing skills and we will continue to increase our
commitment to the performing arts to ensure engage-
ment and progression within our area.





In order to support our pupils in times of stress and anxie-
ty, we practice mindfulness and do breathing exercises which
will encourage them to develop healthy routines for the rest of

Sociology






Sociology has never been more exciting with the pop-
ularity of the subject growing and the number of pu-
pils in the subject brimming. The pupils have taken to
the subject and embraced the significance of the moral
fabrics of society.

Year 10 have learnt about the practical, cultural, and
political aspects of the subject and understood how
sociology contributes to social policy and the impact
these policies have on society.

Year 11 pupils have understood why the nuclear fam-
ily is seen as the ideal family structure, how education
is pivotal in a meritocratic system and why crime and
deviance are prominent in today’s society.

Year 12 pupils have focused heavily on how sociolo-
gists collect data to understand social groups. Pupils
have also investigated how the forefathers of Sociolo-
gy have shaped modern society, social identity, and
the family.

Year 13 have focused on education, global politics,
the effects of the media, and the impact of secularisa-
tion on religious belief. Pupils developed deep critical
thinking skills about challenging topics in the world
today.

Sociology is more relevant today than it has ever been
as pupils are curious about an ever-changing society
and the impact it has on social identities, culture, and
politics.

Economics






Economics is one of the most popular subject at Jed-
dah Prep and Grammar School. This is due to excel-
lent teaching and learning, robust curriculum and the
wider enrichment opportunities offered to our pupils.

This year the Economics Department successfully
launched Careers Lunch to KS4 and KS5 pupils. The
purpose of this new initiative was to invite guest
speakers from different professional backgrounds to
share their experiences with our pupils. This also gave
our pupils and an insight into what it takes to be suc-
cessful in the industry.

Furthermore, over the Christmas holidays, Year 12
Economics pupils were busy preparing for their pres-
entations on how Covid-19 has effected the econo-
my of Saudi Arabia. These presentations were very
well received and standards were very high. Pupils
worked hard to plan, deliver and present to the year
12 and 13 cohort and to their teachers in an assembly.

Moreover, the Economic pupils also participated in
the Mind Underground External Essay Competition
which looked to hone writing skills and engage partic-
ipants in contemporary economics discussions. This
was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to discuss the
challenges of the current global economy in the bid to
win the 1st prize of £1000.

It has been an extremely busy and productive year for
the Business department. The subject is more popular
than ever and pupils have been inspired by the qual-
ity of teaching and passion from all members of the
department. Equally, pupils have been inspired by the
‘real world’ of business from Elon Musk’s acquisition
of Twitter to the unprecedented fall of Bitcoin value.

Whilst Key Stage 4 and Key stage 5 have the oppor-
tunity to explore and build their subject knowledge
through their GCSEs and A levels respectively, it was
the Key Stage 3 pupils who have demonstrated their
entrepreneurial spirit by taking part in ‘The Young
Entrepreneurs Society, which takes place one a week
as an ECA.

Pupils have shown remarkable knowledge and en-
trepreneurial qualities by planning and setting up
their own Business; from selling sweets online to de-
signing bespoke beads for customers. Also they have
demonstrated fantastic knowledge of finance, human
resources, operations and marketing as well as inge-
nuity and creativity. Pupils will now pitch their ideas
to entrepreneurs in Jeddah in pursuit of investment.

Science






It was a momentous occasion when the doors of Jed-
dah Prep opened in September 2022 to welcome our
pupils back after a long absence. Despite Covid hav-
ing left widespread devastation in its wake, it did not
deter the spirit of joyous celebration of being social-
ly united once again. In the laboratories, Science re-
sumed its usual buzz with lessons being highly inter-
active and pupils being more exuberant than before.

KS 5 started off the year with a bang going straight
into dissections in Biology and titrations in Chemis-
try. It was wonderful being able to do practical work
again and we all enjoyed the classroom atmosphere.
For KS 4 it was a new phenomenon being at home
for the start of their IGSCE. Pupils liked the personal
interaction with their peers and their teachers. Pupils
who previously, rarely participated were more vocal
now.

Whilst Year 8 and 9 enjoyed the benefit of face-to-face
lab time, our year 7s waited a long time before they
could do the same. However, when the opportunity
did present itself, they applied themselves with great
enthusiasm. Overall, it has been such a rewarding
year with all our pupils just enjoying the “hands on”,
practical and active learning which is SCIENCE!!

In international schools, learning French has always
been a challenge, which the French department at
JPGS is pleased to take on.

Mr Antoine Dupuy, a Prep and Grammar school teach-
er, and Mrs Naglaa Elawamry, a Grammar school
teacher, are glad to see the results of last year’s hard
work, with the number of pupils choosing French in
year 10 growing year after year.

Miss Nouf, who supports the de-partment, have aided
many new students this academic year. We’ll continue
to work hard to make French enjoyable and fascinat-
ing, as it was, is, and will continue to be a valuable cul-
tural and profes-sional advantage for JPGS students in
the future.

The department is keen to teach French through fun
activities by asking students to learn lyrics of French
songs, reading novels, and preparing French reci-pes.
This year also students have joined the Language Vid-
eo Making Competition.

The department is also very proud of the students
taking the French Delf exam under the supervision
of Mrs. Elawamry. The French division is looking for-
ward to improving their results even more in the com-
ing academic year!

Music






Music in the Prep School remained virtual until
mid-January. Fortnightly Zoom lessons alternated
with Firefly assignments in which students were en-
couraged to practise their practical skills at home and
celebrate their achievements by sending in video re-
cordings, which were than shared during our virtual
lessons.

Videos received featured home-made ‘kitchen drum-
kits’ and stylish imitations of the great conductors.
The ‘Winter Concert’ was simulated virtually with the
help of a number of amazing Karaoke performances.

Since the return of live lessons, pupils have made the
most of the opportunity to make live music together.
Weekly Music lessons have focused a great deal on
the joys of class singing, beginning with ‘Love is All
You Need’ for St Valentine’s Day and culminating in
performances of some of the greatest hit songs from
the last seventy years as part of our Queen Elizabeth
Jubilee celebrations. Xylophone ensembles have also
featured strongly as pupils have rediscovered the en-
joyment that can be shared by all as we make music
together.
