Around the WORLD in Year 4!
Travelling the world and taking in the sites of the Taj
Mahal and mud huts in a remote area of India-(Even
attempting to sell them in a most persuasive way.) Off to
Chembakolli, a village in India learning about their way of
life and daily chores. As children in WW11, we travelled to
the English countryside and wrote letters home. In History
we travelled to Rome, which took us onto the battlefield
armed with our homemade shields and swords.
Next up was travelling to Hogwarts, the School of Magic
and Wizardry, for Book Week, many experiments, solving
of mathematical problems and reading took place here.
Mulan took us to China and children had the opportunity
to showcase their many talents. Finally a class trip to
downtown Balad, where we experienced local cuisine,
visited old buildings and learned about the history of
Jeddah.
What a Great experience we shared together this year!

Year 5 has been a very fun year for all of us in 5A.
On top of learning wonderful new things, we’ve also
had the opportunity to participate in fun Enrichment
activities like the BSME and the production of Mulan!
Other highlights included Book Week, UN Day and our
class trips to the Voila chocolate factory and the Abdul
Raouf Khalil Museum.
Mr Hugo taught us many interesting things and made
our lessons fun with his creative, entertaining stories.
We especially enjoyed it when he read to us!
Our class voted to determine which subject we enjoyed
the most this year and the winning subject was Maths.
We learned a lot during these lessons and have all
made good progress. We can hardly believe that Year
5 is almost over, but we will have many wonderful
memories to cherish forever!

Time has flown by so quickly in 5B, but we had some
fun. Remember back to the start of the year and I
experienced my first wonderful Saudi National Day.
It was a delight to see the lovely costumes and eat the
delicious food. Remember those rainy days, which seem
so long ago. Remember the Greek assembly and the
fantastic winter concert.
Another highlight to the year has been the school trips
to Voila chocolate factory and the Abdul Raouf Khalil
Museum. Our amazing ‘prize-winning’ World Book Day
door.
In our lessons, 5B found maths problems at the start of
the year challenging but are now finding these activities
enjoyable. Science is another subject everyone enjoyed,
particularly designing their own parachutes.

expanded their knowledge and challenged their skills.
Every pupil immersed themselves into the curriculum
and participated with enthusiasm producing some fine

to watch the pupils progress, grow and mature into
independent pupils who have developed in confidence
and become self-disciplined young leaders. It has been a

6C have had a busy, productive year. We’ve learned
about light, how it travels, and what happens when it
refracts. We looked into how plants and animals are
classified, and put this into the context of how our planet
is changing due to human involvement. We explored
electrical circuits, and how these are represented in
diagrams, before then looking at how various systems
in our bodies work. We’ve delved into the history of the
Indus Valley Civilisation, before jetting over to the Shang
Dynasty of Ancient China.
Amongst all of this we had an outstanding book week
and visited the desert in LCS, and Bounce to learn more
about how our bodies worked. We’ve learned about
working together this year, and taking responsibility
for our learning, in preparation for our move to the
Grammar School. Well done 6C!
It’s been a pleasure teaching you. All the best for Year 7.

SAUDI NATIONAL DAY
This year the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrated
its 88th National Day. Upholding the JPGS tradition,
Saudi National Day was celebrated on Thursday
20th September with much zeal and ardour. The day
started with students arriving in colourful and ethnic
Saudi attire. During the day the students enjoyed
traditional food brought by them from home and took
part in various activities.
The highlight of the celebration was the Saudi National
Day assembly that was held in the auditorium in
the afternoon. The proceedings started with students
of grade 6 singing the Saudi National Anthem. The
National Anthem was followed by a Saudi Heritage
video to give the audience an overview of Saudi
tourist sites. The pupils of JPGS prepared some special
celebration dances, posters and speeches to show their
love for the kingdom.
Last but not the least, was the performance of a
professional folk-dance troupe who presented a stick
dance that is a prominent feature of Hijazi culture.
The Saudi National Day assembly is a special feature
of LCS curriculum to promote Saudi culture to the
diverse JPGS community.

UN DAY
On Thursday, 1st November 2018 JPGS celebrated
United Nations Day. Prep School pupils arrived at
school wearing their national dress. The exceptional
effort of the pupils to represent their country was
astounding. The school became alive with colour.
Pupils also brought a plate of food from their country
to share with their peers and let them experience a
small flavour what their country has to offer. There
were some really delicious treats from all around
the world. Unfortunately, heavy rains disrupted the
celebrations and the safety of the children became a
priority and school closed early.
Before pupils went home the Prep School gathered
together in the hall to recognise everybody and their
country by participating in a mini parade along the
stage. It was very clear that the pupils had great
pride in their dress and their country, walking with
purpose and enjoying the attention as they represented
themselves, their families, and their country of origin.
One can only be proud of our institution as our school
community is filled with families from all across the
globe and we are able to successfully learn as one
school family. Our pupils truly are global citizens.

WINTER CONCERT
Jeddah Prep and Grammar School had a productive
2018 by culminating in a delightful Winter Concert
attended and enjoyed by many and showcasing the
talents and potential of the students.
The Prep School sounded like angels during the
Winter Concert . They worked hard and creatively
throughout the term in preperation for the event.
Children in both Grammar and Prep performed
at a number of events this term, including the
Remembrance Service and assembly, Saudi National
Day celebrations and International Day. The Prep
Choir have worked hard to perfect their individual
items and hopefully they will be joined by further
members next year, when future performances will be
planned.

PREP SCHOOL PRODUCTION
Mulan
This year Prep School pupils took their peers, parents
and teachers on an unforgettable journey to Ancient
China!
It is with tons of gratitude, more than the avalanche
that the Huns were buried beneath, that we look
back upon the last four months during which we
have worked so very hard to make this yet another
successful musical for Jeddah Prep. As teachers we
are grateful that we were given the opportunity to
express ourselves creatively while giving our children
the opportunity to showcase their talent and hopefully
discover a love for the performing arts. The four
months long process started with choosing a show,
obtaining the performance licence and scheduling
auditions. After the first stage was completed,
rehearsals with our amazing, newly-selected cast
started and carried on non-stop while our costumes
were designed, made, fitted and altered. At the same
time our Junior Hall was turned into a set fit for a
professional production in a world class theatre!
With their exceptional singing voices and acting skills
our cast have, as we expected, finally done us proud.
The sacrifices that they have made by rehearsing three
afternoons a week for the whole of the second term has
paid off and during our three performances they were
shining like true Broadway stars!

ANNUAL SPORTS DAY
JPGS Sports Day was held early in the calendar year
when the weather is coolest. Students grouped into
their Houses and participated in a variety of individual
and team sports events and games. Parents were
invited to join their children throughout the day
often taking part in most events particularly in the
foundation years. Events chosen were fun, safe and
easy to participate in successfully.
Everyone is a winner at JPGS with children guaranteed
to win at least two of events for their efforts.

ARABIC DEPARTMENT
Welcome to the Arabic department at JPGS.
Arabic is a beautiful and rich language in both its
written and spoken forms. The language is the native
tongue for almost 300 million inhabitants of 22
countries through the Middle East and North Africa.
At JPGS, we teach Arabic to students at a variety of
different levels, from recent arrivals in Saudi Arabia
without any knowledge of the Arabic language,
to those who are confident native speakers who
ultimately perform extremely well in the First
Language Arabic examination. The variety of ability
levels, even within the same class, makes every lesson
interesting and challenging in equal part!
We adopt a highly motivational and individualised
teaching style that makes the language interesting and
relevant to the students, using modern methodologies
with the latest audio and video resources. As far as the
non-Arabic speaking students are concerned, we work
with students on listening skills, using songs, rhymes
and language games. Our development and progress
cannot continue without the enthusiasm of the
students and your invaluable support and cooperation.
Mrs Rehab Mohammad
Head of Arabic Department

LOCAL CULTURAL STUDIES
Pupils of today are visual learners and a field trip allows
them to touch, feel, and listen to what they’re learning,
which helps them build on classroom instruction,
gain a better understanding of topics, build cultural
understanding and tolerance as well as expose them
to the world outside. Our Year 2 and Year 4 pupils
benefitted a lot from the LCS School trip this term.
Year 2 went to a wellness center where they learnt
more about Saudi culture through Arabic calligraphy,
traditional dances and cooking activity. Year 4 explored
historic Jeddah by having a walking tour of Balad that
combined history, heritage and arts for students.

ART DEPARTMENT
Year 4
From evacuation suitcases and propaganda posters
to natural disasters and Roman mosaics, the Year 4
students have explored a range of model making,
drawing, collage and surface paint effects. Many
enjoyed splatting, oozing, snipping and gluing which
have all helped develop their fine motor skills.
Year 5
Investigating “Coastlines” saw students silhouetting
and painting ombres and knowing the difference
between a tint and a tone and where to use them
according to light sources. Their painting skills have
been further developed whilst looking at the key artist
‘Monet’ and using hot and cold colour palettes and
choppy brush strokes to recreate the famous Japanese
bridge and to draw, cut, score and assemble a model
water lily.
Year 6
The ‘Light’ project saw students draw and render sun,
moon and stars symbolically and use Aztec pattern
work. They have since been completing a Native
American Haida art project which imitates a Year 7
art and design brief model. Students were encouraged
to research and compile visual information later used
to draw and paint their own totem animals as well as
making model totem poles which they embellished.
Year 7
Key artists such as Vincent Van Gogh were referred
to when looking at line. Painting to music with
Kandinsky made students work more instinctively
with shape and colour. Texture was the formal element
students perfected in “Imaginary animals” which
culminated in a collagraph print of their Cryptoid
creatures. These featured in homework tasks which
sought to contextualise the animal in book covers and
poems, bringing them alive.
78
Year 8
Students learnt to manifest their 2D perspective
drawings of their Gargoyles into 3D with clay work.
They followed through with dry brushing paint effects
using a base colour, high and low lights which gave an
authentic, burnished effect. Since then, students have
produced reduction prints of sugar skulls with poly
tiles and painted Frida Kahlo pastiches when looking
at Mexican Art and artists.
Year 9
Pop Art has seen students familiarise themselves
with artists who sought to iconise familiar people and
utility products seen in everyday life, such as Warhol
and Claus Oldenburg. The theme of ‘junk food’ saw
students use papier mache to sculpt larger than life fast
food models finished with garish, synthetic colours.
‘Student of the month Art award’ applies to all classes
and projects and is often very hard to decide with such
talent in abundance which often results in multiple
student choices!

M
essage from the houses – Imperial, Newton and Victoria
I would like to start by saying what an interesting
and enriching experience it has been to be the House
Coordinator for Grammar School this year. It has been a
real honour to have worked alongside so many driven,
mature and sociable pupils in planning, setting up and
running a range of different house activities.
A huge thank you to the House Captains, Vice House
Captains, House Representatives and Mr Lowe and his
team. The House team have been crucial in ensuring
that the House Activities have been a success this year.
Especially in regards to providing a range of activities
aimed at meeting the interests of as many pupils in the
student body as possible.
This year has witnessed a return of many whole school
favourites such as inter-house Football, inter-house
Volleyball and inter-house Basketball. In addition, as
means of keeping house activities light hearted, the House
team also provided activities such as inter-house tug of
war and inter-house dodge ball. It was a real joy to see so
many KS3 pupils working alongside KS4 and KS5 pupils
in helping their Houses to gain the much coveted House
points.
Furthermore, this year witnessed a concerted effort in
providing a balance between sporting and academic based
House activities. These included an inter-house spelling
bee, inter-house chess, inter-house kahoot challenge, inter-
house art competition, inter-house Uno and an inter-house
creative writing competition.
The end of the academic year saw the House cup
presentation to the winning house in Grammar School.
Victoria came first, Imperial came second and Newton
came third. Victoria was most deserving of their victory.
This was achieved through a combination of excellent
leadership from the House leadership team, but also
from the commitment of House members to try their and
achieve the best in the various House activities.
