Dear Pupil and Parent,

At Jeddah Prep and Grammar School, we are proud of the
achievements of our Sixth Formers.

In our positive, nurturing and supportive Sixth Form, all our
students have the opportunity to be the best that they can be. We
offer first class teaching in small but dynamic teaching groups
combined with a multitude of options aimed at giving students
the chance to explore their own passions and interests.

Our emphasis is on developing you as individual and our di-
verse programme of activities is designed to draw out your
talents and qualities. Whether you choose to participate in the
International (Duke of Edinburgh) Award, the School Council,
the Eco Club, the MUN Society, the Debating Club or hone your
musical and artistic skills, you will find encouragement from
our committed and approachable teachers.

We are very much a community and our Sixth Formers are a
uniquely placed, important and integral part of the whole school
and your voice is important in shaping our organisation and fu-
ture development.

You will be actively encouraged to participate in daily school
life, interact with and provide a good example to fellow students
up and down the year groups. But we also value being part of
a wider community. Supporting local, national and internation-
al charities as well as taking part in schemes that offer study
and travel opportunities throughout Europe means you’ll have
a wealth of options open to you.

If you have already been part of our school community before
or are joining us from elsewhere, you will find our Sixth Form
at Jeddah Prep and Grammar School one that will prepare you
for life. We will equip you with skills that will be invaluable at
A Level and beyond.

All students throughout the school are valued as individuals

Our Pupils Are Well Supported
JPGS has a strong system of pastoral support and guidance with a separate Head of Sixth Form and form
tutors. Pupils get personalised careers advice, wellbeing coaching and learning support English as an addi-
tional language support.

Great Pupil Staff Ratio
Small group teaching is a hallmark of JPGS. Given that our A Level and BTEC studies stretch our
pupils’ learning boundaries, we believe it is essential to provide a high level of personal support.

A Truly International Experience
With pupils from over 40 different countries, JPGS has a varied international pupil body. In recent
years, Sixth Form pupils successfully started university courses in the UK, USA, Canada, Bulgaria
and Netherlands.

Choice of Sixth Form Courses


• To gain entry into the Sixth Form, pupils will be expected to have achieved a minimum of five (5) grade
B’s in their IGCSE subjects. Mathematics (minimum C) and English First Language (minimum C) must
have been attained.

• In order to study a subject at AS or Advanced A Level, it will be the expectation that a pupil will have
achieved a Grade B, or above at I.G.C.S.E. Pupils wishing to choose Mathematics, one of the Sciences or
Computer Science it is recommended to have attained Grade A at IGCSE.

• It is expected that all entrants will study at least FOUR (4) subjects at AS Level in Year 12.


• It is expected that most pupils will drop ONE (1) subject at the end of Year 12 and therefore proceed to
study three (3) subjects at A2 in Year 13 although it is allowed to continue with four subjects at A2.


• The intention is that the pupils will achieve greater breadth in Year 12 by adding the extra fourth subject.
Much has been written about what in actual fact constitutes such - but undoubtedly universities like to
see this. It is hoped therefore that it will offer the Scientist the opportunity to continue studying an Arts
course for one year, or vice versa. However, most importantly, each individual pupil must make the de-
cision which is best for them - and guidance and support will be on hand in this process.


What will the workload be like?
For most A Level pupils, the jump from IGCSE is huge and unexpected. Pupils should recognise that the
‘free lessons’ are to be understood as ‘study periods’ which are provided to allow them to research and do
private study. It is unrealistic to expect anybody to get through A Levels without putting in a lot of extra
hours. A typical A Level pupil may spend 4 – 6 hours per week on each subject. Non-designated time should
also be used to keep abreast of topical issues and reading journals on their subject specialism. This broader
knowledge is an expectation of universities and will help them in their applications.

Information on University Entrance and Requirements


The most important pre-requisite when selecting an ‘AS’ subject must be whether you enjoy it and wish to
study it. Good grades will get you into a good university - a poor grade in a subject you only took because
you thought you might want to be a doctor/dentist etc, could limit your university choices. However, it must
also be accepted that the ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level courses that you choose to study have obvious implications for
university entry and therefore you should try to not rule out any future study options.

With this in mind the following guidelines may be beneficial (we recommend the website for great additional
information www.informedchoices.ac.uk)

Taking a degree course in a National Curriculum subject (i.e. available in Year 9):
In most cases, it is necessary to study the subject to ‘A’ Level and often that will be the highest grade required
in any offer made by Universities. The other 3 AS levels are usually entirely optional, but some exceptions
include:

Taking a Degree Course In Other Subjects


In some cases, it is not necessary to study the subject at ‘A’ Level and generally no ‘A’ Level subjects are es-
sential e.g. Law. Below are some of the exceptions:

Don’t settle for one source like this! Teachers, Heads of Departments and the Headmaster have all had ex-
perience in these issues and are obvious usual sources of information on choices, but before making a final
decision, always speak to the relevant people who will have specialised knowledge of their subject area. If

Head of Grammar


Entering the Sixth Form should be both an exciting yet
challenging prospect for any student.

The Sixth Form of Jeddah Prep and Grammar School has
been well established since its inception in 2004 with many
students going on to study in a wide number of universi-
ties all around the world. In order to successfully meet the
challenges presented over the two years, each student is
supported by staff in both their academic studies and gen-
eral well-being. Alongside their studies we expect our stu-
dents to develop their wider skill set in the different areas
of preparation for university, fulfillment and leadership.


Jeddah Prep and Grammar School wants Sixth Formers to
have broad horizons and high ambitions. Higher educa-
tion and the huge array of employment sectors seek more
than merely academic results, so transferable and leader-
ship skills will be a necessity for anyone wishing to be ac-
cepted here. We are proud that the education that our stu-
dents receive has allowed them to apply and be successful
in reaching top Universities around the world.

There is a strong expectation that Sixth Form students will
demonstrate a mature responsibility for their own learn-
ing within a structured and supportive environment. They
should actively seek to want to develop into leaders of the
School Community by acting as role models and taking
up positions of responsibility. Whether as prefects, leaders
within subjects or running clubs and enrichment opportu-
nities for younger students.

While there will be a community feel for which the School
is renowned, with social facilities and quiet rooms in
which to work, academic progress and development re-
main at the heart of the Sixth Form.

Course Outline


AS and A2 level
Art and Design is a mode of expression and communication. It is concerned with visual perception and aes-
thetic experience, and forms a language in addition to those used by literary, mathematical, scientific and
factually-based subjects. This Art and Design syllabus is designed to enable pupils to:

• Develop an inquisitive, creative approach to research and problem-solving;
• Develop the ability to record from first-hand observation, personal experience and other sources;
• Effectively communicate their personal response by improving technical skills in a range of processes
and media;
• Develop independent expression by analysing, evaluating and applying concepts and techniques;
• Articulate ideas and responses to their work and the work of others using a relevant vocabulary;
• Develop a clear contextual framework that aids critical reflection of their work;
• Develop a critical understanding of important concepts and formal elements of art and design;
• Develop the skills needed to study art and design at higher education;


Fine Art
The work produced may include still life, portraiture, landscape studies or abstract and figurative composi-
tions. It may be either expressive or interpretative in content, or it may seek to record a response to the visual
world. Candidates should have a broad understanding of the history of painting and other channels of visual
communications and they should use the resources of museums, galleries, local collections or exhibitions to
make a first-hand study of paintings wherever possible.

Assessment

Advanced Subsidiary (AS)
Candidates will be required to submit work for Components 1 and 2 and will need to reach a certain aggre-
gate mark in the subject as a whole, in order to qualify for the Advanced Subsidiary award.

A2 Level
Candidates will be required to submit work for Components 1, 2, and 3 and will need to reach a certain ag-
gregate mark in the subject as a whole, in order to qualify for the Advanced Level award.
Candidates who wish to follow a staged assessment route to A Level should take the AS qualification first
(Components 1 and 2). They are then only required to take Components 3.

Rules of Combination

There are two assessment pathways available to candidates.

A Level candidates may elect to take
• Components 1 and 2 at an earlier session than components 3 or
• Take all components in the same session

A2 Level comprises three components:
Component 1: Coursework (25%) – Externally assessed by CAIE
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (25%) – Externally assessed by CAIE

(A Level candidates take Components 1, 2 and 3 = 100%)

Advanced Subsidiary comprises the following two components:

Recommended

Pupils should take every opportunity outside of school hours to familiarize themselves with relevant artistic
imagery available by visiting Art museums, Exhibitions and Art Galleries. Gathering primary research and
information by taking photographs and sketching, and secondary research using the internet together with
reading of relevant books are highly recommended.

Course Outline


AS and A2 Level
The AS – Level is a one year and the A2 - level is a two year course. Both are a useful introduction to the
world of business for pupils planning to enter professions in banking, accounting, management services,
personnel and so forth. Pupils must achieve at least a grade D at AS level to progress to the A2 course. The
pupil must also demonstrate hard work during the course of the year to progress to the A2 course.

Entry Requirements
Students will have a standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general
education equivalent to four GCSEs at Grade 9 – 4 (A*- C Grades)


Course Outline


BTEC International Level 3 Diploma in Business. This is equivalent of 2 A Levels.


BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
The BTEC International Level 3 in Business enables students to focus on a range of business topics and gain
a developed knowledge of Business across the globe.

Assessment

This qualification provides a broad understanding of the way businesses work. Pupils study a range of units
each focusing on a different aspect of the Business world. The Diploma involves studying 9 units, spread
across two years. There are five mandatory units, three internal units and two set assignment units. Set as-
signment units are set by Pearson under Controlled Conditions. Pupils will be awarded either Pass, Merit,
Distinction for each unit. This can then lead to them achieving a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* at the
end of the course.

Unit 3 – Business Finance

Optional units will be chosen based upon the cohort of students and their individual requirements.


Careers
BTEC International Level 3 Diploma in Business provides a route into the many diverse areas of business.
These could include specialist areas such as marketing, finance, customer service or human resources, in
large organisations or a role in small, local business. It also provides the opportunity to access higher edu-

COMPUTER SCIENCE

Entry Requirements
Recommended Grade B in IGCSE Computer Science – must have a strong programming
foundation.


The aims of a course based on Cambridge International AS and AL Computer Science, whether leading to
an AS or A Level qualification are:

• To develop computational thinking
• To develop an understanding of the main principles of solving problems using computers
• To develop an understanding of computer systems and how they interrelate, including software, data,
hardware, communication and people.
• To develop an understanding of different methods of communication and the functionality of networks
and the internet.
• To acquire the skills necessary to apply this understanding to develop computer-based solutions to
problems.


Computer science is the study of the foundational principles and practices of computation and computa-
tional thinking and their application in the design and development of computer systems.

This syllabus aims to encourage the development of computational thinking, that is thinking about what
can be computed and how by the use of abstraction and decomposition. It includes consideration of the
data required. Learning computational thinking involves learning to program, by writing computer code,
because this is the means by which computational thinking is expressed.

Course Outline


The subject content is divided in to four sections:
• Section 1: Theory Fundamentals
• Section 2: Fundamental Problem-solving and Programming Skills
• Section 3: Advanced Theory
• Section 4: Practical (Programming) - Externally assessed. Candidates will answer all questions on a
computer without internet or email facility.


Sections 1 and 2 are studied at AS Level with Section 3 and 4 being studies at A2.

How does Geography help me for ‘Beyond 18’?


Geography was one of the most popular A Level subjects in 2019 in the UK. Employers and universities
value the broad range of transferable skills that Geography delivers. Geography fits neatly with science,
arts and humanities, and geographers also tend to have very good IT skills. An A Level in Geography is
excellent preparation for a career in planning; resource and countryside management; tourism and recre-
ation; environmental management and development. Many geographers also move into general manage-

P1 – Pure 1, compulsory

entiation and Integration. More than half of the Pure 1 course is Algebra or Algebra related, as a result it is
recommended that pupils are strong and fairly confident with Algebra.

M1 – Mechanics 1
Forces and Equilibrium, Kinematics of Motion in a Straight Line, Newton’s Laws of Motion and Energy,
Work and Power.

S1 – Statistics 1
Representation of Data, Permutations and Combinations, Probability, Discrete Random Variables, Probabil-
ity Distribution, Binomial Distribution and the Normal Distribution.


A2 Level
This is a one year course that covers two modules.


P3 – compulsory
Algebra, Logarithmic and Exponential Functions, Trigonometry, Differentiation, Integration, Numerical
Solution of Equations, Vectors, Differential Equations and Complex Numbers.

M1 or S1 or S2
For S2 it is required to have taken S1.
S2 involves Hypothesis Testing using Binominal and Normal Distributions. In addition, the Poisson distribu-
tion, sampling and Liner Combinations of random variables is included.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECT QUALIFICATION

Why choose the IPQ?



The International Project Qualification (IPQ) is an exciting initiative which allows pupils to extend their stud-
ies beyond their A Level courses and prepares them well for university and their chosen careers. For pupils,
it presents a fantastic opportunity both to pursue their interests and spread their wings.

Best of all the IPQ is worth half an A Level (70 UCAS points) so can be used to support pupils’ applications
to university.


The IPQ allows pupils to embark on a self-directed and self-motivated project. It gives pupils the chance to
gain real independence, resilience and maturity while pursuing any topic of their choosing.

Pupils must choose a topic, then plan, research and develop their idea and decide on a ‘finished’ product. The
finished product can take a variety of forms including:


• A research-based written report
• A research-based artefact – for example a presentation, a book chapter, designing a carbonneutral house,
musical evening, scientific experiment or art piece.

Taught in a university style through seminars and oneto-one tutorials, it allows pupils to carve out their own
pathway and follow their own interest whilst being supervised by their IPQ tutor.

The IPQ will be completed in Year 12 with most pupils submitting their finished products at the end of May.
For pupils following the typical A Level route, IPQ will be an essential part of their programme in the Sixth
Form, in addition to their four subject options.

From the Head of Sixth Form


As pupils enter Sixth Form, they have increasing oppor-
tunities to make a valuable contribution to school life and
the wider community. This helps prepare them for the
decisions and responsibilities they will face in the future.
Pupils leave our Sixth Form as well-rounded young adults
with an excellent perspective of themselves and the 21st
Century world in which they will live and work. Appro-
priate academic challenges are provided through a wide
range of academic courses. Pupils are expected to take
four AS-Level courses in year 12 and then drop one based
on results and progression plans at the end of Year 12. All
pupils may opt to take the International Project Qualifica-
tion, which can result in lower university offers as well as
teaching valuable research skills.

We endeavour to tailor our courses to meet the needs and
wishes of each individual pupil and our options blocks
have been built using the straw poll that was completed in
the autumn term. We have recently decided to widen our
selection of courses further by offering A-Level 3 gener-
al vocational qualification of BTEC Business Studies. This
course is the equivalent of 2 or 3 Advanced levels but is
assessed by coursework. Pupils can mix A-Level and Vo-
cational courses to give them the best programme for ad-
vancement.

Support, guidance and time is given to pupils in the Sixth
Form, particularly regarding their UCAS applications for
university. Pupils are encouraged to set up work experi-
ence (covid allowing!) and job shadowing opportunities
which proves very valuable for curriculum vitae writing
and university applications. We are incredibly proud of
the fantastic destinations which our pupils reach, in recent
years these have included some of the best universities in
the world.


Sixth Form is more than what takes place in the classroom
and we offer a broad programme of supplementary stud-
ies and extracurricular activities, including sports, D of
E, community service, charity work and leadership op-
portunities. Each year pupils form the Sixth Form prefect
team which oversees many of these activities. We believe
strongly in finding opportunities for pupils to develop
leadership skills, this year has seen the pupil led PALS
programme pairing older and younger pupils together to
help mentor and teach them. Together with extra respon-
sibility goes increased freedom in order that Sixth Formers
may have the necessary experience of independence be-
fore they leave School.
