delivery of the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership

The aim of this document
Sports Leaders UK understands and acknowledges that everyone who is involved in the delivery of their awards and qualifications,
regardless of the specific job they do, will have numerous other agendas to meet.
This document is specifically designed to help Tutor/Assessors accredit prior learning and knowledge from the Active Young People Organisers course to the
Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria of the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership.
All of Sports Leaders UK’s qualifications are made up of a number of units. The unit title gives a clear indication to the content and achievement of the unit. The unit
will then consist of one or a number of Learning Outcomes. The Learning Outcomes define what the candidate is expected to know, understand or be able do as a
result of a process of learning. Every Learning Outcome consists of a number of Assessment Criteria, and it is these that you will assess against. The Assessment
Criteria define what the candidate will be expected to achieve in order to demonstrate that the Learning Outcome has been met.
Guidance for Tutor/Assessors on accrediting prior learning and knowledge

• Candidates must be assessed against all Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria of their chosen Sports Leaders UK qualification.
• Candidates must be able to demonstrate competence and/or have evidence to show they can meet the Assessment Criteria for their chosen Sports Leaders

UK qualification.

• The assessment of prior learning and knowledge should follow the same internal and external quality assurance procedures as laid out by Sports Leaders UK.
• This document must be used in conjunction with the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership CD-ROM Tutor Resource, and all Tutor/Assessors

must have an up-to-date copy of the Tutor Resource to work from.

• Every candidate must have a Record of Achievement at the start of their course.

Active Young People Organisers course
Candidates can become an Active Young People Organiser by attending a one-day course which would help them to understand and carry out their role; to organise
safe, fun and purposeful physical activity for all young people; and work generally within the aims and philosophy of the Active Young People programme, and the
specific aims of the programme for which they will deliver.
Active Young People Dragon Sport programme
Dragon Sport is an inclusive activity programme for young people between the ages of seven and 11. Included in the Dragon Sports are: athletics, cricket, football,
hockey, netball, tennis, golf and rugby. Each Dragon Sport is supported by a series of game and activity cards and a bag of equipment suitable for young people
within this age group. The game and activity cards offer progressive activities that support skill development, leading to the Government Body mini-game. Dragon
Sport is run on primary school sites, out of school hours and is led by voluntary organisers.

Active Young People 5x60 programme
5x60 is an inclusive programme designed to encourage more young people of secondary school age to participate in physical activity and sport.
5x60 comprises a choice of traditional sporting activities similar to Dragon Sport; coached activities such as tennis, badminton and squash and informal activities
such as table tennis, dance, cheerleading and some outdoor and adventurous activities such as orienteering. 5x60 seeks to encourage more young people than
ever before to take part in sport and physical activity by removing the barriers that prevent some from taking part. It takes place generally on the secondary school
site, and is led by voluntary coaches, Sports Leaders and parents.
Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership
The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership provides the ideal starting point for people aged 13 years and over who wish to develop their leadership skills. The syllabus
is designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sporting situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the
candidate. The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership is a practical qualification in which candidates must demonstrate their ability to lead others in basic sporting or
recreational activities.
The aim of this qualification is not to create mini PE teachers or sports coaches, but to give candidates an understanding of what it means to be an effective leader
and knowledge of the skills and abilities they will need to order to lead others successfully. The qualification is not based on a candidate’s sporting aptitude and at no
stage will they be assessed on their technical knowledge or sporting ability. Candidates must have sufficient knowledge to lead others at an appropriate level, but it is
their ability as a leader and not as a performer that will be assessed.

Next steps
Delivery of a Sports Leaders UK qualification (Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3) cannot commence until the organisation is a registered
Approved Assessment Centre, and the Tutor/Assessors have been accredited.
A course can commence prior to a member of the organisation attending a Tutor Training day, as long as that person is booked onto one of the Tutor
Training days within a reasonable timescale.
Sports Leaders UK awards can be run without the need to register as an Approved Assessment Centre.
