G’day everyone, well another month into 2017, time is absolutely flying buy I am sure you
will agree, so many events to go to, and a couple of rainy weekends so we can have a
break too, was a great day out this weekend past with Gemma’s Memorial Walk, in which
all money raised went to the Isabella & Marcus Paediatric Tumour Fund, such a worth
while cause, they really lack much government funds, so it was great that we could help
out and raise some much needed $$$ and give the families some cars to look at, they
raised their target of 20k so it was a great result, so a big thank you to you all for coming

along and helping to support this very worthy cause. June is now coming up behind us in the mirror and
about to overtake us, with a couple of large events, I have booked into Wintersun in Murwillambah and I
know a number of others have too, so we’ll all have to get together and find out who is there and park
together as a club. Cooly Rocks On and Beachfest on the Sunshine Coast is on the next weekend, so will
be a busy one, lets hope the weather plays ball and we have a nice sunny warmish weekend, we can only
hope, what ever you get up to please stay safe, don’t forget we have our Trophy Day at the KOA Club

Australia Support. A GREAT DAY OUT.

What a great day, perfect weather, heaps of people and cars, total of around 50, with almost
half these KOA members, so pat yourself on the back if you were one of the owners of 21 KOA

cars present this day, Amanda told me later that day they had raised their target amount of
$20,000, this was such great news for the families that have to deal with this terrible cancer.

The above HK Ute, Red, was judged the Top Car of the Day, this was a
very neat car, very clean and well presented, We finally caught up with the
owner just as he was leaving to give him his trophy.

KOA member Ernie Hill did well with receiving the trophy for Amanda’s
Choice, Amanda being Gemma’s mum, a great choice for a beautiful car,
she said that is was nearly the same as her parents EH.

The trophy for Coolest Car of the day picked by yours truely was believe it
or not a Ford, and an Edsel at that, a very cool 59 Wagon, very cool.

Longest Cruise in the World?

Part Four

We left Parkes on Monday morning the 29th of March, after a day and a half and two nights we got to see and
meet some of the nice people of Parkes, looking forward to returning one day. So we headed off to Mildura
Victoria and on the way we stopped off at Hay for lunch, I must say this part of our cruise may of been the most
boring driving past the fields of long grass, not much to see till we got to Hay for Lunch, we ran into an old timer
cruising around in his 1939 Graham Sedan, Supercharged of course, see more about this car on Page 27

After a nice lunch in Hay we took off again for the rest of the days cruise down to Mildura in my home state of
Victoria, this is where we met up with Robbie Rose and a couple of his mates Rod & Glen, Robbie is from
Geelong in Victoria and he brought along his beautiful 1967 Cadillac Fleetwood.

While I met with the Mayor of Mildura we all were invited to the
Gateway Bistro, one of the finest place to eat in Mildura the
owner is also pictured here with the Mayor of Mildura, we had
a very nice lunch, Levella was feeling a bit under the weather
at this stage and was back at our Tent sleeping off a huge
Migraine, poor Levella, fortunately her sister who lives a few
hours away had come to visit us there, so this made Levella
feel better. I’m glad we had a rest stop in Mildura, it all gave
us a chance to recover a little bit, plus to prepare for our next
part of the cruise and this was to Walkerie in South Australia, a
pretty little place right on the mighty Murray River we stoped
here on the 31st of March for Lunch, the local Lions Club at
Walkerie were great, they knew we were coming so put on a
BBQ for us (continued next page)

Longest Cruise in the World?

Part Four (cont)

in a lovely park right where the Murray River crossing on the barge was, this is where the Mayor of Walkerie
came and introduced himself and had lunch with us before we headed off to Port Pirie which is just below Port
Augusta in South Australia.

We crossed the Murray River on a barge and then headed off towards our next stop over at Port Pirie in SA, over
two nights as we were catching up with another local car club there on the Tuesday afternoon, but in the
meantime we stoped for lunch at a place called Burra (2 hours north of Adelaide) where some of the SA Cadillac
Club members were there to welcome us to South Australia, about half a dozen of them cruised up to meet us
for a yarn and some Caddy chit chat at the local hotel.

From 55 to
the late

70’s lots of
Caddy’s
came to
see us

Right on dark we arrived at Port Pirie, we set up our tent & could not wait to shut our eyes, the next day we
where invited to PADARK (Pirie & Districts Automotive Restorers Club Inc.) for Lunch, the Mayor was invited and
came along, we were warmly greeted by many fellow car lovers there. They sure put on a great meal.

The Mayor with his new Gold Coast Cap, the inside of the club house where we had dinner that night, and the
last pic on the right is the Boxer who was standing at the counter of a shop I walked into. Part 5 next month.

Did You Know?

After the Firebird I and II, which
had extremely large resemblances

to the rockets you build in a
summer school class, the Firebird

III flattened out a bit, giving it a
much lower presence. It still

maintained its Jetsons appeal,
though, with two separate bubble
pods and several enormous rear

plane wings. The name was
resurrected in '67, when GM
introduced the Pontiac Firebird

Ian Macdonald a member of KOA
since around mid 2015 has four classic
cars in his possession and one of these is
a 59 Ford Customline, Ian has loved
Customlines since he was a kid, he
purchased this one from Melbourne in
2012, and then drove it back home to
QLD.

A number of mechanical repairs
were done on its arrival, a new Headlining
was put in, was repainted, new windscreen
rubbers, its got a 312 ‘Y’ block and a 3
speed Fordomatic tranny.

Ian tells me a fella called Alan
Bohen or maybe Bowen, not sure, but
‘Captain Cuso' as many called this fella has
had Ian’s engine in and out on several
occasions, he used to drag Cuso’s at the
local drag strip.

This is certainly a fine example of
many car buffs favourite Ford, the
Customline.

The
1939Pics by Milton
Graham

In 1927, Joseph, Robert and Ray Graham acquired the Paige-Detroit Company. The company still exists today but
they are no longer in the automotive business. They now deal in real estate.

The Graham brothers had developed a successful business in the glass industry. Their business was later sold to
the Owens Glass Company. The brother's next adventure involved modifying Ford Model T vehicles into trucks.
Later, they built their own trucks using various engines before settling with the Dodge Brothers engine. In 1925,
the Graham Brothers Truck Company was purchased by the Dodge Brothers. Three of the brothers remained at the
company, appointed to executive positions.

The Graham-Page cars were powered by six and eight cylinder engines. A short experiment in the trucking
industry lasted for a few years before the company focused solely on automobiles.

Part of the success of the vehicles was attributed to their durability, quality and success at the racing circuit.
During the Great Depression the company suffered. Their Blue Streak vehicle introduced many 'industry firsts' and
creative design and mechanical innovations. In 1935 a camshaft-driven supercharger was introduced and offered
exclusively on the eight cylinder engines. A year later, the eight cylinder was no longer offered and the
superchargers were adapted to the six.

Near the close of 1940, Graham struck a deal with the Hupp Motor Company. The deal specified that Graham
could build cars based on the body dies of the Cord 810/812. Cord had ceased production in 1937 due to
bankruptcy and Hupp had acquired the Cord dies, leaving them without the financial resources to build the car.

In September of 1940 the Graham-Paige Company switched production to military items in support of the World
War II effort. After the war, in 1946, the company resumed the production of automobiles. Their new car, the
Frazer, was named in honor of Joseph Washington Frazer, the president of the Graham-Paige Company.

In 1945 the Henry J. Kaiser and Frazer became the owners of the Graham-Paige assets and became known as the
Kaiser-Frazer. Graham's facilities were sold to the Chrysler Corporation.

Graham-Paige went into the real estate building. In 1962 the company changed its name to the Madison Square
Garden Corporation.

This Graham-Paige Model 97 Supercharged Convertible Coupe is a wonderful example of the 'Spirit of Motion'
and 'Shark-nose Graham' designs. It is powered by a 216 cubic-inch supercharged inline six-cylinder L-head
engine. It sits atop a 120 inch wheelbase and is suspended in place by coil springs with semi-elliptic leaf springs.
Four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes provide the stopping power while a three-speed manual transmission transfers
power to the rear wheels.

Thanks Mike Nilon for your email re this info.

Although it's possible for a classic automobile to come with with fuel injection, chances are, it has a carburetor
instead. Often when a vintage automobile is hard to start, runs poorly, will not idle or has a severe hesitation, we
trace the problem back to a malfunction inside the carburetor. Here we’ll cover the three main reasons your
classic car needs this component overhauled and the symptoms associated with each.

Accelerator Pump Problems

When the driver starts to push down on the gas pedal an extra amount of fuel is needed to transition from the
idle circuit to the part throttle mode of operation. Without this extra shot of gas there would be a noticeable
hesitation as the throttle opened. The carburetor has an accelerator pump that handles this enrichment. It is a
metal stem with a rubber cup at the bottom. It fits down into a column of reserve liquid fuel.

The top of the stem sticks out through the upper half of the carburetor and makes contact with a piece of throttle
linkage. As the driver steps on the accelerator the stem travels downward and pushes the column of fuel from
the reserve into the venturi of the carburetor.

Symptoms of Accelerator Pump Issues

The most common symptom associated with an accelerator pump problem is engine hesitation. The proper
operation of the pump can be verified by moving the throttle and looking through the top part of the carburetor.

When functioning correctly, two powerful jets can be observed shooting down into the carburetor as the throttle
is moved.

The accelerator pump can last a long time because gasoline helps to lubricate it and therefore prolongs its life.
Unfortunately, if the car sits for a long time, the alcohol and water in the fuel can separate from the gas and
deteriorate the delicate rubber cup of the accelerator pump.

Replacement parts are only available in a carburetor overhaul kit, because the unit must be disassembled to
replace it. New gaskets will be required for reassembly. The overhaul kit also includes new springs and check
balls if it is equipped with them.

The Carburetor Needle and Seat

For a carburetor to function properly, it needs a reserve amount of gasoline. This is stored in the fuel bowl. The
device that measures the amount of gas in the bowl is called a float. The float in turn controls a needle valve and
seat connected to the pressurized fuel system. When the float rises to the top of the bowl, it pushes down on the
needle, sealing off any additional fuel from entering the bowl.

The problem with this arrangement, although it works well, is the tip of the needle is made of a rubberized
material to enhance its sealing capabilities. Since gasoline is a petroleum product this rubber needle has a long
life. However, since modern fuels include high amounts of alcohol and detergents these can work against the
rubber needle. Deterioration is inevitable.

Symptoms of a Bad Needle and Seat

When the needle deteriorates, it loses its ability to turn off fuel entering the carburetor. The most common
symptoms associated with this condition would be an engine flooding scenario. This can cause hard starting or
extended cranking periods. It is easy to confuse this type of problem with carburetor choke problems.

After the engine starts it may emit a large amount of black smoke signifying a rich condition. Another symptom
of this kind of internal problem would be the engine runs better at higher RPMs and struggles to idle properly.
Since fuel continues to enter the carburetor higher RPMs burns the excess fuel. When less gas is needed at idle
the engine struggles to stay running and can stall.

Deteriorating Carburetor Gaskets

Although carburetor gaskets were designed to have long life the original engineers probably didn't figure they
would have to last fifty years or more. The gaskets are made from a composite material resembling a thick
strong paper. Unlike accelerator pump problems and issues with the needle and seat, gasket failure often occurs
because the carburetor starts to loosen up.

A carburetor assembly is three separate pieces clamped together with gaskets in between.

As the screws clamping the three pieces together start to loosen, it allows raw gas to access the gasket material.
This can start a chain of deterioration that eats away at the gasket. When sealing is compromised, it can cause
fuel leaks, both internal and external. Internal failure is when it leaks inside the carburetor forcing a rich
condition with symptoms similar to a bad needle and seat.

External fuel leakage is visible in the area around the intake manifold. Gasket deterioration can also cause
vacuum leaks. This is considered a lean condition with common symptoms like an engine misfire or hesitation.
Once again, these carburetor gaskets are sourced through a purchase of an overhaul kit. Accuracy is important
when shopping for carburetor parts. Car owners should cross check the overhaul kit with the factory part number
directly from the carburetor, against the year make and model of the automobile.

Vintage Cars and Ethanol Fuels

People want to know if ethanol is safe for their daily driver and classic cars. Here we'll go one step further and provide solid answers
about using fuel containing ethanol in a wide variety of gas burning engines. More importantly, we'll discuss if ethanol is bad for your
car and how to determine risk by usage. Learn about best practices when it comes to gassing up that classic muscle car for long term
storage. See how long properly treated fuel will last in the garage. Finally, discover the pure gas movement and how you can become a
part of it.

What is Ethanol Fuel Ethanol is an additive used to enhance the quality of gasoline. Technically its ethyl alcohol

made from renewable biological sources. In other words, things that grow, like switch grass, grains and corn. When blended, at a 10
percent ratio, ethanol is said to increase the octane rating of the fuel as much as three points. The other advantage of using this
additive is a natural reduction in tailpipe emissions. It's good at decreasing carbon monoxide, because of its higher oxygen content.
Other beneficial qualities of alcohol are contained within ethanol. For example, alcohol has the ability to absorb water. This is why
it's often the main ingredient in products that remove water from fuel.

Eliminating water reduces the chance of a fuel line freezing up in the dead of winter. It also allows naturally occurring condensation
from the fuel tank to burn in the combustion chamber. They design modern automobiles to run on 10 percent blended ethanol fuel
mixture. There is legislation on the table to increase this to 15 percent.

Push Back Against Ethanol With car makers, the Environmental Protection Agency, and farmers on board the

ethanol train, who would argue about the benefits the fuel provides? Two main groups have come forward to say this kind of gas is
not good for the way we use it. The boating and classic car community uses fuel differently than the everyday motorist. For these
hobbyists long-term stability of the gas they install becomes a primary concern. Car owners that use an automobile for regular
transportation consume fuel at a much faster rate than hobbyists.

Blended ethanol fuels don't pose a problem until they start to separate over time. Therefore, if you want to know if ethanol is bad for
your car, then think about how you use it. If you burn through a full tank in a month or two, it's not a problem. However, the longer it
sits, the more the gas separates. This can cause corrosion of internal fuel system components. In a recent issue of Jay Leno's garage
he detailed a list of his own classic motorized vehicles that suffered damage from using standard California pump gas in a long term
storage situation. Even ethanol producing companies won't argue the fact that E10 gas has a shelf life. They're also quick to point out
that all fuels degrade over time.

Ethanol Free Pure Gas With a long list of pitchfork grabbing people, screaming for their old-fashioned gas, a

business opportunity presented itself. What if gas stations made available pure gas with no ethanol? The answer is boaters and
classic car owners would buy it. In fact, the station could even charge a dollar more per gallon. Another group that benefits from the
new product line is the small engine owner People that own chainsaws, lawnmowers and snow blowers store fuel for long periods of
time to run this equipment. Gas without any ethanol, mixed with fuel stabilizers will last much longer than an ethanol mixture.
Although a fight to close these gas pumps down rages on, the pure gas.org website provides a list of more than 8000 gas stations that
still carry it. Get involved by registering with the website and adding ethanol free stations in your area.

Gas Tank Fill-up Best Practices Whether you own a classic 1967 Cadillac Eldorado Luxury Sport Coupe a

Jaguar XK150 British Sports Car or a 20 foot Bayliner bow rider, you’ll want to follow a few simple rules when gassing up. Since
these motorized vehicles are hobbies they can often get pushed to the back
burner for long periods of time. The last time you fill the tank slips from
months to years.

Therefore, every time you add fuel treat it like a long-term storage situation.
Although filling of the tank with ethanol free fuel can be more expensive it
can pay for itself in the long run. It’s generally recommended to install around
three quarters of a tank. This is because moisture forming from temperature
differentials will collect on the uncovered surfaces.

On classic cars and boats install a fuel stabilizer product even if you think
you'll burn a full tank in short order. Remember to add fuel stabilizer additive
halfway through the fill up procedure. This assures it will mix well and
maximize the length of storage. Some say when they follow this procedure the
fuel can last five years or more without significant degradation.

Jenvey DCOE Heritage Throttle

When Jenvey announced the new DCOE Heritage Throttle Body they were overwhelmed with
interest from classic car owners from all four corners of the globe. Designed to look similar to the
iconic Weber DCOE sidedraft carburettor, the Jenvey unit will look completely at home bolted to the
side of any vintage or classic car engine.

The benefits of fuel injection over carburetion are well-known and often provide the single largest
performance (and fuel economy) gain that one can hope for on antiquated motors – with the
exception of forced induction. The Jenvey DCOE Heritage Throttle Body bolts directly to the same
manifold as the original Weber unit, and each includes twin throttle bodies and twin injectors.

A few modifications are required for fitment, the most significant of which is an ECU, but Jenvey have
designed the units to work with both Emerald and DTA units, and they say it’ll work with pretty much
anything else. You’ll also need a high pressure (3 bar / 42 psi) fuel feed, however most capable
home mechanics can install the high pressure system, ECU, and throttle bodies given enough time,
Googling, and beer.

ALAN FLEMING'S 'EXTRA FX' EFIJY-STYLE CUSTOMS

Street machining legend Alan Fleming has always been about big ideas, and his latest starts where
Holden's EFIJY left off. How would you like your very own EFIJY-style Humpy?

HERE comes a stupid question: Do you remember the Holden EFIJY? Of course you do. The
showstopping, Holden-built tribute to the FJ humpy knocked the ball out of the park both here and
overseas when it hit the show circuit in the middle of last decade, even taking home trophies Stateside.

The design of Alan's prototype Extra FX takes massive inspiration from Holden's award-winning EFIJY
concept car of 2005, but it will be able to be customised to your taste

So, a proper one-off, then? And definitely not something you or I could ever get our hands on? Er, hold the
weddin’ judge. You might soon be able to buy yourself either a turn-key or DIY kit version of more or less
the same thing.

The bloke behind this grand scheme is none other than veteran street machiner Alan Fleming. Yep, the
same Alan Fleming that gave us the Motorvator pano way back in 1990, and the J-Rod as a tribute to his
late son. So when Alan talks, we listen.

Alan’s broad plan is to ramp up manufacture of both fully finished cars and complete kits for you to build
your own take on the EFIJY, with a working title of Extra FX. You’ll be able to choose whether your car is
built in fibreglass or carbonfibre or a combination of the two, whether it uses a stretched FX or FJ grille,
and whether it pulls in the visual cues of a high-tech rod or a classic lead sled.

So far these copies of ‘Kustom News’ can be kept as a part of the history of your car club, in the last 16
years of KOA we only have a few typed pages of the minutes of meetings to reflect on, wouldn't it be
nice to flick through some pages of a magazine to see info about your car club, its members, runs
we’ve been on, stories from members and what they have been up too, pictures in colour of what cars
we have seen and what cars members are working on, detailing the continued history of Kustoms of
Australia, Gold Coast, YOUR CAR CLUB. Maybe a picture of YOUR car on the front cover, maybe a
full story of you and your car in the centre spread! In 2017 you will continue to receive the KOA
Newsletter ‘Kustom News’ that you already get electronically as a Link to a PDF file in an email each
month after the general meeting, I know what its like reading it off a computer screen, not real great, or
maybe your computer emails are not working so well and you miss seeing it.

With my printing background I have turned these Newsletters into a professionally printed FULL
COLOUR glossy Magazine for you to purchase, a subscription every 12 months, or you can purchase a
single copy from a particular month, at this point in time you will be looking at 11 issues per year at
$12.00 per issue, I know it seems a lot, but it costs over $12.00 (depending on the amount of pages
printed) to print, fold and staple at the printers, you would be surprised and shocked at how much time
it takes to put this sort of thing together, we are talking about 20 to 30 hours every month, as a member
you can help me to help you, you or someone you know may have a business they may wish to
advertise in ‘Kustom News’ with an audience of 120 members the right sort of business within the
pages of our magazine will do well, over time will continually improve the ‘Kustom News’ and its
contents, the latest issues are already 48 pages.

If you would like a back dated copy of the magazine I can do this, the price will be $12.00 per copy and
I will bring them along to the next general meeting or for an extra I can post them too you.

I know you can buy a good quality car magazine at the post Newsagent, but they are printed in the
hundreds of thousands, your club magazines are a limited run of a dozen or so, plus you will more than
likely see a members car in the pages or even your own. After you have collected the first 12 months of
the magazine, as a bookbinder I can offer you a discount rate to actually bind the collection together
into yearly volumes if you would like, this would be a professional hard covered book with the title on
the spine and front cover and would look great with all your car stuff at home.

The chassis is a one-off design by Alan himself and, while it’s a ladder construction, it uses the same perimeter
frame concept that made the early-50s Hudson Hornet a NASCAR race-winner back in the day. The design
also gives the step-down, lowered floorpan that makes the finished article feel much more modern to sit in and
drive. The car you see here is very much a prototype (actually, it’s not much more than a buck for flopping
moulds from) so it uses a VE Commodore strut front end. “That’ll be replaced probably by a wishbone set-up
in the real thing,” Alan says. “Probably from a Corvette.” The rear end is a VE IRS unit that will probably
remain, and power in this version comes from a stock LS1.

That sensational-looking body features hot-rodding touches like a flip front, suicide doors, custom glass and
even a detachable hardtop. The colour? “It’s a one-off colour I mixed up about 20 years ago to paint a truck,”
Al says. “But I threw some hardener in it and made sure it was still okay and then blew it on.

”The bumpers are fibreglass units that Alan had coated with a process called vacuum metal-plating, and they
kind of underline the statement he’s making with this car. “My background these days is in composites – you
know, race car bodies and stuff. I still appreciate metal and the skill that goes into getting it right, but I like the
high-tech materials of composites.”

Mal’s Funnies

Liefman’s Joke of the week.

WHO PAYS THE CHECKERS?

There are important questions to be answered about recent LGBTIQQ bathroom legislation and
whether transgender people will be permitted to use a restroom of the gender with which they
"identify" or will they be required to use the restroom of their biological gender?

If the latter, will public restrooms be required to have a Genital Inspection Officer (or, Pecker Checker)
posted at the entrance to all public restrooms?

Who will have to pay these Pecker Checkers, the people using the restroom, or the entity that owns
the restroom?

Under what Award will Pecker Checkers be employed? And, how much money will a Pecker Checker
be paid to check peckers?

Or, is Pecker Checking a contract position? And, if so, do we pay a Pecker Checker by the number of
peckers checked?

Which begs the question, how many peckers can a Pecker Checker check if a Pecker Checker could
check peckers?

What has this country come to when the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations has to create a
new job description of Politically Correct Restroom Service Inspectors? And will this job – like so many
– be so difficult to fill that it will be added to the s457 list?

And what will be their vision statement?

It has been suggested that their motto will be: "If You got’ta pee - We got’ta see!"

Alan’s original factory in Queensland was destroyed by floods a few years ago, leading him to the Philippines
for a while, where he attempted to set up production. “But as a foreigner in business there, you’re a target. In
the end, I got robbed and I reckon I was lucky to get out alive.”

Back in Melbourne, Al started work on the Extra FX concept about six or seven years ago, and admits that it
wouldn’t have got this far without the help of an industry that recognises his runs on the board (the Motorvator
was the first Aussie street machine to have major sponsorship – Dulux, you’ll recall). At the moment, he has
the backing of BOC, Nuplex/Allnex, Petley Automation, PPG, G James Glass, Ecochrome, WalZed Auto
Refinish Suppliers, and Brett Longhurst at Bremar Automation.

The big hump in the road to production now comes from the various rego authorities who are insisting that
each example of the car must be created as an Individually Constructed Vehicle (ICV). “That’s thrown up a
huge set of challenges,” Al told us. “But we’ve come too far to let that stop us now.”

So what about the fact that it’s so close to EFIJY to look at? Well, Alan is quite open about that. But, as he puts
it, why not celebrate something that was so right to start with? “Besides,” he says, “I was thinking about the
same sort of thing as EFIJY before Holden built it. See, my love is FXs and FJs. The problem there is that
they’re such a small car; they don’t lend themselves to this kind
of stretched and dumped look. But EFIJY changed all that. This
car is bigger in every direction than an FX Holden, and that’s
why it works visually.” No arguments from us on that point.

And the big question: What’ll it cost? “Hard to say,” Al says.
“But I’d like to be selling kits for around the 40-grand mark.
But only to people I knew would finish them and finish them
properly.”

You can see a bunch of build-up pics and more info at the Ffx/
ffj Facebook page.
