Vintage Maserati cars denied entry into Australia
over asbestos testing
Six vintage Maserati sportscars meant to take part in an Australian tour will be sent
back overseas because it's unclear if they contain asbestos.
The cars were brought from England for the seven-night Maserati Global
Gathering, which began in Torquay on Tuesday.
But instead of being driven from the Great Ocean Road to Sydney as planned, the
cars have been stuck in a warehouse.
"There was a shipment of eight cars that came from England ... some of them
extremely expensive and some of them absolutely unique," Maserati enthusiast
Mark Guterres said.
Two of the cars were allowed to enter Australia as they were built after it was made
illegal to produce cars containing asbestos.
Border Force initially refused to release the other six Maseratis unless holes were
drilled in them to test for asbestos.
"Six vehicles were identified as potentially containing asbestos and the importer
could not provide appropriate assurances that they did not," a Border Force
spokesperson said in a statement.

Vintage Maserati cars denied entry into Australia
over asbestos testing continued from p7
"The importer declined to have the vehicles tested for asbestos. The importer was given
permission to export the vehicles.
"Testing can be avoided if importers provide sufficient assurance to demonstrate that
imported goods do not contain asbestos or that suspect parts have been removed before
import.
"We don't want to unduly penalise classic car importers, but asbestos can kill and we
have an obligation to protect the community from any asbestos coming into the country."
The stand-off comes a year
after biosecurity destroyed
one-of-a-kind plant
specimens sent by Paris's
Museum of Natural History
to an Australian herbarium.
Mr Guterres, who is the
director of an international
logistics company, said
those importing the cars
were told last year they
would be allowed into the
country.
"We did inquiries, obviously, last year during the planning stages and we knew that there
was an issue with asbestos," he said.
"We were informed that the responsible minister was going to issue a waiver so that we
didn't need to have the asbestos inspection."
He said the cars were of "museum quality" and had participated in similar tours overseas.
"I've been on rallies in Europe ... with all these cars appearing regularly.
"There is, in the best of our knowledge, no asbestos in any of them at all.
"They've all been completely taken apart and rebuilt."

Repair Mistakes & Blunders
I had been a professional aircraft mechanic for about 15 years, but had limited electrical
troubleshooting experience. On aircraft, that is typically handled by avionics or
electrical "specialists." I was more of a hydraulic and engine specialist. If potential
electrical problems were discovered, they would be handed over to the appropriate
personnel for repair. I also worked on my own vehicles since I was old enough to drive
and had done many modifications and a fair bit of wiring installation in the process. I
had also recently added a professional quality multi-meter to my tool collection, but
rarely had an opportunity to use it. Then, the opportunity arrived.
My Isuzu Rodeo had four power windows that stopped working...but the fuses all
looked good. With confidence and enthusiasm and the proper tool for the job, I laid out
my plan of attack. I would start at the power window switch on the driver's door panel. I
removed the switch and checked for power...nothing. No power was at any of the four
window switches. My next step was to remove the door panel and inspect the wiring
inside of the door and through the rubber grommet leading to the main harness under
the interior kick panel. I worked my way through the mystery of hidden door panel
fasteners. I disconnected handle and door lock cables and other connectors for lighting.
The panel was finally removed and all the electrical switches were hanging openly from
the door harness.
It was at this point I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. What was this?
Another switch that I had overlooked? Hmmm...seems to be a power window lockout
switch which I did not recall ever using. And of course it was pressed in to the lockout
position and the cause of the non-operating power windows. An old lesson was brought
to fresh memory. Check all the simple things first!

Ken’s had his 58 Chrysler Royal for 12 years now, it was in original condition when he first
acquired it and Ken had plans of a full restoration, one of which had every nut and bolt
replaced right down to the bare bones of this late 50’s Classic.
The engine is a 313 cubic inch Polly V, which has been completely rebuilt, the tranny a
Powerflight 2 speed auto also had the full rebuild treatment as well.
Ken worked on his 59 alongside Bill Budd to bring this classic back to life, With Ken being a
sheet metal fabricator he was able to completely rebuild the damaged fins at the rear and
also kustom make the sill plate covers in full stainless steel rather than using the original
rubber ones.
Once all the metal work was done, the two tone paint job was done using a Pearl White and
Passion Purple colours, Once it was finished Ken entered it into Wintersun 2006, and has
been a regular entrant ever since.

THE ORIGINS OF KOA IN AMERICA (PART 4)
Story continued from last
Issue of Kustom News.
My research on the origins, activities, and ultimate purpose of “Kustoms of America” requires and
warrants further investigation. There remains precious little information and documentation regarding
this club. Who really ran or administered this organization is open to question. The club envelope
return address is the 11054 Atlantic Ave Los Angeles location. Hershel Conway tells me there was no
office or desk that took care of club business. The letters were perhaps sent over to the first “KOA”
address of 5880 Hollywood Blvd, or the later (as of November 1954) 5864 Hollywood Blvd. And who
was Ben D. Martin, listed as executive director, who disappears by March of 1956? It also appears that
the membership figures were inflated. The number of actual dues paying members is not known.
A few samples of Custom Cars with the KOA decal on the windshield. (Decal on the right is from a Barris
1940 Mercury, photo by Rod Powell, now in the collection of Luke James Horton)
Anne DeValle was a
member of the Kustoms
of America Club, and she
had one of the Kustoms
of America plaques on
her Barris Kustoms
created 1942 Ford.
(Anne’s Ford was
previously owned by
Marcia Campbell.)

THE ORIGINS OF KOA IN AMERICA (PART 4)
There is also the question as to how long the club was in existence. The latest year on a membership
card I have encountered is 1959. The couple of newsletters that I have examined have dates between
1955-58. Former members have told me that the newsletter just stopped arriving in the mail… no
explanation. I must also mention that there have been a couple modern attempts to revive or reclaim
the original “KOA” identity and traditional reputation. They are “Kustom Kemps of America” (KKOA)
estab 1980, and the modern “Kustoms of America” estab early 1980’s. Both of which are fine clubs,
but according to my research have no direct lineage or connection with the original “KOA”. One
curious aspect of the promotional material of the modern “KOA” is the claim of being descended from
the original “KOA” starting in 1949. That date is nebulous, as the original “KOA” was established in
1954. The earlier “Kustoms LA” origins can be traced to 1947.
Editors Note: This is the last part of the story I found on the interweb, in relation to Kustoms
of America, I found it very interesting, as I am sure you did also, if you would like to see it in its
original form please visit the website: https://www.customcarchronicle.com/cc-builders/barris-
kustom-shop/the-original-kustoms-of-america/ The Four part story was used from this
website for your information, it gives a good background into a car club that continues today,
and that we at KOA in Australia can lay claim to part of its origins.

Scarab - - ever seen one?
The Scarab had an 85 HP Ford flathead
V8 engine.....
Was the Scarab an Original Minivan?
Ron Schneider of Milwaukee bought
and restored a 1936 Stout Scarab.
It is believed only a handful were
made.
Many say that the car was ahead of its
Dme and seems to be a minivan
prototype.
‘I restored my Scarab to see if the car
was as good as [William B. Stout]
said it was,’ says Mr. Schneider. ‘And
it is.
The Scarab out on the road.
Ron Schneider of Milwaukee , owner
of Leon ’s Frozen Custard, with his
1936 Stout Scarab. The car is the
brainchild of inventor William B.
Stout, who also dreamed up the first
all-metal airplane and a folding
house.
The Scarab’s front end, designed with
an apparent mustache in mind.
Only nine Scarabs were built,
historians believe.
Mr. Schneider bought this one for
$12,000, plus some more for another
one that he used for parts for his
restoraDon.
With its unique styling and forward-
thinking ideas, the Scarab was very
avant-garde for its day.
The inventor incorporated the
fenders and flushed window glass
into the body to make the machine
streamlined and noiseless as it drove.
It also used lightweight materials for
beder efficiency.
The car was a challenge to the
automobile industry to build
something different,’ says Mr
Schneider.
A look at the driver’s seat. The
inventor William Stout lived in the
Detroit area and had many business
dealings with Henry Ford. Thus some
parts are Ford-derived.
The logo on the Scarab’s steering
wheel. The car is named for the
scarab beetle.

1925 Bugatti Brescia
Type 22 Roadster
Bonhams Sale 18191 - Automobiles d'Exception
á Rétromobile, 23 Jan 2010 Rétromobile Salon,
Porte de Versailles, Paris
One of the most celebrated of all Bugattis, having
lain submerged beneath the waters of Lake Maggiore
in Switzerland for more than 70 years.
The story going around Ascona is that Marco
Schmuklerski left in 1936, leaving behind the
Bugatti, which was stored in the yard of a local
building contractor, Barra. Its owner at this time is
not known, but the local customs officers knew of
the car's existence and insisted on payment of the
import duties owed. At that point these duties may
have amounted to more than the value of the Bugatti,
which was 11 years old and well used. In the case of
non-payment of the duties, the car had to be
destroyed and the simplest way to do so was to tip it
into the nearby lake. To facilitate its recovery the
Bugatti was attached to a heavy chain, but when this
finally corroded away the car fell to the lakebed at a
depth of 53 metres.
