From the editor……….G’day KOA Members only 5 months till the end of the year, where
has this year gone, just when you thought July was a busy month, so many photos to put
this this months magazine, and now we have August this is another big month for us so
here we go again, and our 2nd Annual Swap Meet is on at the end of this month, this is
such an important day, one where we not only help other car enthusiasts to sell their wares
but a time that we help raise some more money for our charity ‘Gemma’s Memorial Walk’
this money collected by Amanda and her team of helpers will be at the exit of the Drive In

and at other walk out exits collecting money in buckets for Gemma's Memorial Walk & Isabella and Marcus
Foundation donated into research for Childhood Brain Cancer, such a very important cause that is not
supported in a huge way by the government, so we must do what we can to change this, so this is one way
we can help. So make sure your alarm is set so you can get to the Yatala Drive In nice and early and help
us to make this event a smashing success not just for KOA’s financial well being but to also show the
community that we support such a worthy cause one that affects many families even within our KOA
membership. If your a member that does not get involved too much in club activities, its about time you got
off your bum and come and help, you think your too busy, rubbish, we all live busy lives, so make the effort.

Kevin Bateup has certainly kicked a goal with this 1977 piece
of magic from Holden, his LX Torana just wants to live the life
of an SLR, and he has certainly done this, since first
purchasing the car in 1984, “it was in good nick back then”
he said, “a one owner”, he pulled the motor out and rebuilt
the 308 and stroked it out to a 355, 600 Holley, L34 Valves,
Roller Rockers, Pacemaker Extractors, full custom exhaust
with dumps under the diff and dummy exit points at the rear,
custom aviation style tank filler.

Its got a shift kitted stage 2 trimatic, with a
3500 stall converter, twin piston 300mm
front brakes, rear disc brakes, LSD, with a
3.55 ratio, Brown Davis 140 litre long
range tank, Custom built Bathurst Spec
sway bars, all four of them, Bilstein
Shocks all round and Bathurst Spec
custom made springs, custom made Hot

Club Run to South Coast Restoration Society.

Once again we were blessed with fabulous weather and company - with 29 members and their partners/
families attending our 4th. run to this event. SCARAB fielded about 12 members, plus a couple from the

Rover & MG Clubs.
Many fine examples of automotive history were on display, with their proud owners only too willing to

chat about their pride and joy.
There's plenty to see and do around the venue at the various displays of skills and machinery from a

bygone era. I noticed a reasonable number of young families wandering around with their children

pointing out various items of interest and not an iPod or mobile phone in sight   The crowd was a little

smaller than I remember from previous visits, however I'm sure the Society would have been happy with
the  result.

Around 2 PM Ron Whelan made an announcement over the PA that we were about to present the
trophies and was ably assisted by The Societies President. Trophies were awarded as follows:

Longest Cruise in the World?

Part Six

We’ll continue on with the story, we left behind in QLD a bloke by the name of Bob Durrington with his grandson
Jarrad in Bob’s newly acquired 59 Cadillac. He was just finishing off an engine rebuild, the 59 Cadillac was
almost ready when we left, and we just got word when we were about to cross the Nullarbor that he has left and
is on his way, to hopefully catch up, they did, a few issues, very daring, very brave.

When we started the cruise across the Nullarbor
above you can see the start of the famous 90 mile
Straight, these above and to the left are photos that
show you this brilliant road, so smooth and very easy
to drive. Its at this time we found out that Bob
Durrington and his Grandson Jarrod had left QLD and
were on there way. Bob had just picked up his 59
Cadillac with his newly rebuilt motor a week after we
had left, would meet as hopefully somewhere across

the Nullarbor, maybe at
Esperance. An that he did,
many long hours of driving,
two blown tires and they
finally met us at Esperance,
to the left you can see them
both at our camp site.

The View was just so
awe inspiring, many
hours apart you could
go right to the edge of
the Great Australian
Bite and stand so very
close to the edge of
Australia, we even said
to each other here that
it would be great to
drive our bus over
here, and we did not
even own one at this
stage.

Here is a list of Monthly cruise locations, this chart was kindly sent to me from
Leon Bray from the Christian Classic Car Club, he has compiled this list for

your viewing pleasure, now you can’t say you don’t have any where to go on a
Friday or Saturday night. If you have SIV registration you should all be able to
attend any of the following events as they have been listed in your official KOA

So far these copies of ‘Kustom News’ can be kept as a part of the history of your car club, in the last 16
years of KOA we only have a few typed pages of the minutes of meetings to reflect on, wouldn't it be
nice to flick through some pages of a magazine to see info about your car club, its members, runs
we’ve been on, stories from members and what they have been up too, pictures in colour of what cars
we have seen and what cars members are working on, detailing the continued history of Kustoms of
Australia, Gold Coast, YOUR CAR CLUB. Maybe a picture of YOUR car on the front cover, maybe a
full story of you and your car in the centre spread! In 2017 you will continue to receive the KOA
Newsletter ‘Kustom News’ that you already get electronically as a Link to a PDF file in an email each
month after the general meeting, I know what its like reading it off a computer screen, not real great, or
maybe your computer emails are not working so well and you miss seeing it.

With my printing background I have turned these Newsletters into a professionally printed FULL
COLOUR glossy Magazine for you to purchase, a subscription every 12 months, or you can purchase a
single copy from a particular month, at this point in time you will be looking at 11 issues per year at
$12.00 per issue, I know it seems a lot, but it costs over $12.00 (depending on the amount of pages
printed) to print, fold and staple at the printers, you would be surprised and shocked at how much time
it takes to put this sort of thing together, we are talking about 20 to 30 hours every month, as a member
you can help me to help you, you or someone you know may have a business they may wish to
advertise in ‘Kustom News’ with an audience of 120 members the right sort of business within the
pages of our magazine will do well, over time will continually improve the ‘Kustom News’ and its
contents, the latest issues are already 48 pages.

If you would like a back dated copy of the magazine I can do this, the price will be $12.00 per copy and
I will bring them along to the next general meeting or for an extra I can post them too you.

I know you can buy a good quality car magazine at the post Newsagent, but they are printed in the
hundreds of thousands, your club magazines are a limited run of a dozen or so, plus you will more than
likely see a members car in the pages or even your own. After you have collected the first 12 months of
the magazine, as a bookbinder I can offer you a discount rate to actually bind the collection together
into yearly volumes if you would like, this would be a professional hard covered book with the title on
the spine and front cover and would look great with all your car stuff at home.

Help me better our Kustom News Magazine, advertise your business or get your
friend to advertise their business on these pages, here is my sample advert below
for my own Business, full page $100.00 per year, half page $50.00 per year, Quarter
Page $25.00 per year. Compare this rate with other advertising and you notice that
this is a more than reasonable price. Happy to put your supplied art-work together
